A teen cyclist died along Mutare Masvingo Road after a head on collision with a car on February 2, 2025.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and encouraged motorists to avoid speeding and to be attentive when driving.
“I confirm the death of Godknows Chiteza (17) of Sosera Village, Bikita who died after having a head on collision with a GWM car which was driven by Phineas Sibanda. We encourage motorists to avoid speeding and to be attentive while driving,” said Dhewa.
Circumstances are that on February 2 at around 2320hours, Sibanda was driving a GWM car due West with two passengers on board and Chiteza was cycling a motor cycle going the opposite direction alone.
Upon reaching the 232km peg, both failed to negotiate a curve leading to a head on collision. Sibanda’s car went off-road dragging Chiteza on his motor cycle for about 10 meters and he died on the spot.
Both the car and the motor cycle sustained extensive damages and were taken to Vehicle Inspection Department (VID). Chiteza’s body was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for postmortem.
