Dr Tizora cuts the ribbon to mark the official opening of the laboratories

Precila Takabvirakare

GUTU – Senior principal director for academic affairs in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Dr Dzapasi Innocent Tizora was at Dewure High School last week to officially open newly-refurbished sciences and computer laboratories.
The project, which began last year, saw the school renovating two of its existing blocks to create state-of-the-art laboratories in less than three months.
The science labs can accommodate 28 Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture students while the computer lab has enough space for 40 students.
In his speech, Dr Tizora praised Dewure High for making enormous strides towards the full implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) initiative.
“Despite the challenges that schools face in promoting the learning of science subjects, Dewure High School has demonstrated remarkable innovation. We are impressed with the quality of lab facilities that we have seen here.
“The school continues to build upon its success stories over the years and uses that as a ladder to step ahead into the future,” Dr Tizora said.
The school received 40 desktop computers from Solomon Matsa, dust coats from the contractor WW2 and an anti-theft alarm system from Dr Tizora who also promised to install an air conditioning system for the labs.
Gutu District Schools Inspector (DSI) James Mahofa said the developments at Dewure High dovetailed with the Education ministry’s drive for infrastructural development in schools.
“We have a new curriculum which requires infrastructural development. I am pleased to see that as Dewure High School, you are fulling the requirements of that curriculum so the ministry will continue to support you,” said Mahofa.
He advised pupils to take good care of the labs, warning them against abusing the internet.
Speaking to TellZim News, Dewure High School head, Samuel Mahwehwe thanked all people who made the project a success.
“This is a great milestone in our quest to improve education standards at our school. Our gratitude goes to all parents, those who made donations and all other stakeholders who made a contribution. Their efforts have indeed made an impact on our thrust to elevate the study of sciences at our school,” said Mahwehwe.
Emanuel Chikombe, an ‘A’ level sciences pupil said he was confident academic performance will improve as the laboratories are now better equipped.education

‘Professor in incompetence, ignorance’

Professor Paul Mavhima

. . . Mavima defends high pupil/teacher ratio
. . . says he will not resign, come what may
. . . ECD at public schools now a joke

Moses Ziyambi

There is an outrage against the alleged policy blunders being made by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Paul Mavima who stands accused of making unpopular decisions that are detrimental to the education sector.
Recently, Mavima nullified the 2017 Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) ‘O’ Level English Paper 2 results and controversially ordered a re-sit, a deeply unpopular decision which was later invalidated by the High Court of Zimbabwe last week.
As if that is not enough, Prof Mavima told TellZim News in an interview this week that it was normal to have a class of 50 to 60 ECD pupils being taught by one teacher.
He was responding to questions on his decision to freeze the recruitment of new Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers, a move that has created an unmanageable situation in public schools where one teacher has to deal with a class of up to 60 little children.
“It’s normal. That is the case everywhere even in Harare. There are resource constraints but when things loosen up, we will start recruiting again,” said Mavima.
Asked if – by his use of the word ‘normal’ – he meant that the situation in primary schools was ideal even by government’s own standards, Mavima changed track, saying things should be better.
“At ECD level we should have 25 pupils in each class, at junior primary (grades 3-7) it should be 35 while in secondary school, the proper number is 40,” Mavima said.
There are growing calls from parents and other key stakeholders for Mavima to resign but the Professor, who is rumoured to be related to the President, said he will not call it quits, come what may.
Masvingo Provincial Education Director (PED) Zedius Chitiga acknowledged the problem of pupil per teacher ratio but warned schools against using that as an excuse for poor quality teaching.
“We indeed have inadequate teaching capacity at ECD level and our hope is that things will improve. We however do not accept dereliction of duty while using the problems at hand as an excuse. Schools need to be innovative and they must know the right places to go and present their respective problems so that we help each other wherever possible,” said Chitiga.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a teacher at one school in Masvingo Urban said almost 400 ECD pupils were sharing a three-classroom block and three teachers.
“The situation cannot be sustained. We are cheating ourselves and robbing the children of their future because they are receiving no education at all. Imagine having to manage all those small children on your own; some of them crying, making noise or paying no attention at all. There is nothing much a teacher can do, we just let them be and wait for knock off time,” said the teacher.
Another teacher said ECD learning in public schools will soon mean nothing if government does not reverse its decision to stop recruiting more ECD teachers.
“It’s an irrational decision. Children are going to school as a pastime with only the brightest minds standing a chance of learning anything from the overcrowded classrooms. For those who can afford it, it is wise to send their children to private crèches,” said the teacher.
One school head in Gutu said the government had to scrap the ECD programme altogether if it was not fully committed to fund its requirements.
“I do not understand why we are being forced to continue with a programme which does not have full government commitment. At my school, ECD children are sitting on the floor and they don’t have teachers,” said the school head.
He also attacked Mavima for what he said were outrageous policy blunders barely three months after assuming office.
“He must resign and preserve whatever little credibility that’s left of him. There is the English paper two re-write debacle, and now the jokes that are happening in ECD,” he said.education

Danda School teachers robbed, raped

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Five female teachers at Danda Primary School were severely assaulted, robbed and one of them was raped when two assailants burgled into four houses during the night of February 16.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the robbery and rape.
“We received a report in which five female teachers at Danda School in Zaka were robbed and one of them was raped.
“We urge schools to work with police constabularies in their communities so that they can receive improved protection. They also need to have WhatsApp groups where they can warn each other in case of are emergencies,” said Insp Mazula.
Sources who spoke to TellZim News said the assailants pounced at the school at around 02:00 hrs armed with an iron bar and a hoe handle that they used to force open the doors to the rooms of their victims.
The ruffians savagely assaulted their victims all over their bodies before robbing them of their valuables including cash, a laptop and cellphones.
TellZim News managed to speak some of the victims who said the woman who got raped was very traumatised and was admitted at Ndanga Hospital.
Other sources said one of the victims hid herself in a deep freezer when she noticed that her neighbours were under attack.
“After ransacking the house, they moved on to the following one where they found the frightened woman cowering in the freezer but did not rape her because she was in severe pain from a recent Caesarian operation. She however lost two phones to the robbers.
“Another victim was spared a rape ordeal because she managed to convince the thugs that she had an STI. We suspect it was a gang made up of more than two members,” said a source.
After robbing at the school, the same robbers proceeded to Danda business centre where they robbed a female shopkeeper and walked away with groceries and some cash.
Zaka North Member of Parliament (MP) Robson Mavenyengwa who rushed to the school after the attack, called upon rural schools to employ better security measures to protect female teachers.
“Schools should bear the expense of their security but we also call upon the police to find ways of improving the safety of rural schools. My heart is with the victims and we will work to make sure they are given the necessary counselling and any other support they need,” said Mavenyengwa.local

Kasiyamhuru greets party members and supporters at the rally

Clever Taperamoyo

ZIMUTO – Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity (ZIPP) president Blessing Kasiyamhuru has challenged young people to take charge of matters of the national economy by involving themselves in politics.
Addressing Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity Youth Forum (ZIPPFY) members from Masvingo province at a rally held at Zimuto business centre over the weekend, Kasiyamhuru urged the youth to appreciate the fight started by their elders and carry the work forward.
“As ZIPP, we want solution-oriented youths who appreciate the political freedoms brought by our forefathers and take responsibility of the future through participation in the affairs of the country. The youth have a duty to participate in efforts to revive the economy of the country,” said Kasiyamhuru.
He said the youth must not wallow in their misery and resort to blame games without taking action to determine the destiny of the country.
“Our problems are political and economic. We want youths that participate in politics by registering to vote and going to vote on election day. They must also be actively involved in finding solutions to revive the economy and reduce poverty,” Kasiyamhuru said.
He said ZIPP was fully capable of transforming the economy of the country and will involve the youth in every step of the way.
To empower young people, he said, a ZIPP government will introduce courses in leadership, public administration and governance once elected into power.
ZIPPFY Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Ngonidzashe Paradza said the youth in the party will field candidates to contest for position of councillors and Members of Parliament (MPs) in the upcoming general election.local

We will never return to our haunted home, says Bikita family

0

Brilliant Mukaro

BIKITA – The terrified Musirinofa family, which was recently forced to abandon its home in Murahwa village under Chief Mkanganwi, has said the issue is no laughing matter, vowing to never to move back.
The family, made up of the Koniwayi Musirinofa, his wife and maid, became the talk of the community when their place began to be attacked by mysterious stones.
TellZim News reported a few weeks ago that the stones targeted the elderly Koniwayi who later went on to confess before Headman Murahwa that it was all a result of his responsibility in the death of his daughter back in 2004.
The family has since moved out and taken refuge at Claudius Musirinofa’s place in the neighbouring Mukomondero village. Claudius is Koniwayi’s son.
The family claims it had suffered the most grim and paranormal torture imaginable for several weeks before deciding to abandon the homestead.
Godfrey Murahwa, who is village head Murahwa, said the stones targeted Koniwayi whenever he moved out of the house or attempted to work in his fields. He said things got out of hand when his maid found a snake in a cupboard which the family believed was connected to the uncanny goings on.
Claudius told TellZim News the stones had now followed his father to his place of refuge although the situation had not yet become as serious as it was at his own home.
“We are only speaking to the media because we are in desperate need of help. This is no laughing matter. We wouldn’t be speaking to you right now, we do not like publicity of any kind,” Claudius said.
Zimbabwe Traditional Healers Association (Zinatha) Masvingo regional director, Prosper Dohwai said the matter, as he understood it, was the manifestation of a vengeful human spirit (ngozi) fighting a war against the people who wronged the person when he/she was still alive.
“It is wrong for the family to flee its home. Rather, they should seek help immediately. Mushonga wengozi kuripa. We can only help the family if they approach us. We cannot simply go there uninvited because that would amount to witch hunting,” said Dohwa.local

RIP Morgan Tsvangirai

Mapombi can confidently tell you that the Dead BC has mutated into First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa Reality TV. Whenever you tune in, it’s either you watch Auxillia during news hour or on current affairs. If one wants to know more about the first lady, then he or she has to tune in to the Dead BC.
Mapombi has no doubt that very soon some of the people in management there will be shown the exit door because they really don’t know how a public broadcaster must operate. Imagine a former Prime Minister died last week and to them it was not newsworthy at all and they decided kutitaridza zvaAuxillia again and again.
If it’s not her on the Dead BC, then it’s her husband; President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mapombi is very sure the comrades at Dead BC need to be schooled; too much of anything becomes boring and no one would want to watch that trash. Muri kuuraya company mega muchifunga kuti murikugonera Zanu PF nepropaganda isina njere iyo. Ko kutozodadawo kani nezvima findings zve ZAMPS, hanzi ZBC leads the pack. Which pack if I am to ask? There is no pack in the TV broadcasting industry neither is there any meaningful competition in radio broadcasting. It’s a one-horse-race. Munyare.
Anyway, let me not waste my precious time talking about something which is dead already, which has very little viewership kutokundwawo neni Mapombi ndoverengwa neMasvingo yose.  Mapombi was saddened by Tsvangirai’s death – may his Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.
But I didn’t know that Morgan Tsvangirai could command such a huge crowd especially in death. Bob must be ashamed kuti akanyima murume uya power but vanhu vaimuda vakawanda kudarika iye. But Zanu PF never seizes to amaze; hanzi naMuchinguri and Madiro we want to go and capitalise on Tsvangirai’s funeral to campaign for Zanu PF. Shameless politicians!!
How can you say that; such undiplomatic utterances are uncalled for and not expected from seasoned politicians like Oppa and Mike – hamunyare makaita seiko. Sometimes we must forget about getting political mileage tomboitawo hunhu chaihwo – where is the spirit of Ubuntu/Unhu nhai? I was baffled!
And Mapombi was surprised that our government honoured Tsvangirai that much but ari mupenyu vaimutsvinyira vachimuti Tea Boy. Chiwenga even vowed that the army will not salute Tsvangirai chero zvodii but now they have totally changed wena wotoshaya kuti inyasha dzeyi tsvimborume kubvisa mwana wemvana madzihwa.
Mutasa told us that Mugabe lost 2008 elections and he wanted to hand over power to Tsvangirai but Mnangagwa and Chiwenga vakatsika madziro but now they are trying to cleanse themselves by sponsoring Tsvangirai’s funeral expenses.
As a former prime minister, Tsvangirai deserved all those benefits therefore, Mnangagwa and Chiwenga should not appear like they have done him a big favour. They have simply given him what was rightfully his. Zanu PF should not claim to have assisted Tsvangirai; even if it was Bob achiri panyanga he was going to do the same because Tsvangirai is entitled to all the benefits as former PM.
Mapombi, however, is worried about the fissures in MDC-T; the power struggles are just too much. We all know Chamisa commands a huge following compared to Mudzuri and Khupe but they should find each other for the sake of unity. Unity is key, even the Bible says come let us reason together!
Anyway, Mapombi is not an MDC-T supporter so she will not lose sleep over the current fights. Kkkkkk I heard the little known Gutu watsamwa akati ndava kubuda muparty Kkkkkkk mwana wamai usaita kutsamwa kwegurwe kana hwiza inoti ikatsamwa yozvitushura dumbu kana kuzvigura makumbo. You will not survive outside MDC-T – it’s cold out there ask Biti and Ncube they will tell you.
In fact, it is very cold out there and that is the reason you Biti and Ncube on the forefront endorsing Chamisa as Alliance acting president; they want relevance because vanga vapera kuti pepepeeee-eeh. Anyway, Mapombi would like to warn Biti and Ncube that they should not cause confusion in MDC-T simply because they are fighting for relevance.
It’s all most lunch time guys, let me go ndindokanga zvangu maputi angu for lunch. I heard Mphoko akabura imwe new one again recently – I heard he stormed a certain hospital in Bulawayo and threated the management after the salaries of his daughter, who was a medical doctor at that hospital, was seized after she failed to report to duty during the period yeOperation Restore Legacy. The Legacy which never was saw Mphoko’s daughter fleeing the hospital for her dear life kusvika management yati mubvisei paPay roll, and now she is back but salary hakusisina.
KKKKKK Cde Mphoko, you are no longer as powerful as you were five months ago. Things have changed and now Lacoste ndoyava nepower and they are showing it by arresting all Gay 40 (G40) members. The best Mphoko can do is to shut up and praise the Lord that he is out of jail. But Mr Mphoko, may you continue with the good work of donating chicks and incubators that you were doing during Dr Gire’s leadership? Kkkkkkk by the way, Mapombi heard Levi Nyagura zvakazomuwana this time – he was arrested over Dr Grace’s fake doctorate. Dai zvikafira mujeri mhani. Mboko imboko!mapombi

Marapira: Minister of selfishness

The contentious dam wall built by Marapira
…    blocks Mucheke river to irrigate his small farm
…    thousands of residents face water rationing
…     Minister Hungwe fumes

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO – The deputy minister of Agriculture who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Masvingo North, Davies Marapira has erected his own wall across a section of Mucheke River close to his farm in order to block water flowing downstream, TellZim News has learnt.
Outraged residents have called for the demolition of the wall, they say poses a danger to the environment and people living close by as it was allegedly not built to professional specifications.
People are also complaining that Marapira is selfishly monopolising a natural resource that should benefit the whole community.
TellZim News saw an approximately four-metre high farm brick wall, close to the former Riverside Lodge and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Medical School which is under construction.
The brick and mortar wall, which was built in May last year, has seen the downstream of Mucheke River, which feeds into Lake Mutirikwi – City of Masvingo’s only source of water – drying up despite the rains.
City of Masvingo mayor, Hubert Fidze said there was nothing the local authority could do in light of the fact that Marapira is expected to know better.
“We do not know by what authority he erected the wall to create his own dam. Mucheke River is not flowing because all the water is held up there. We are also afraid that there would be a dangerous flood if the wall collapses,” said Fidze.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister, Josaya Hungwe said he was unaware of the development but promised to quickly investigate and deal with it.
“Why would Marapira erect a wall to block the flow of water? If he wants to irrigate his crops, he should create his own dam without endangering people’s lives,” said Hungwe.
When contacted for comment, Marapira lashed out at ‘retrogressive people from Masvingo’ whom he attacked for being quick to criticise.
“It is government policy and we are actually going to put more weirs upstream. The weir was there and we just upgraded it. The problem with the people of Masvingo is that they are negative thinkers and are quick to attack instead of supporting developmental initiatives.
“Mucheke does not flow all the time so I do not see what the fuss is all about. The government has embarked on water harvesting and we cannot be deterred by negative minds.
“We need to boost our agriculture; we want people who are productive not those who simply attack others,” said Marapira.top news

Obert Chari

Bothwell Chabarika

Obert Chari, a Zion Christian Church (ZCC) member who sings in the choir, has released an album titled Mariyambutsa which carries a gospel love song which is rocking the airwaves and the social media space.
The song ‘Mable’ is an exchange between a poor but love-struck man deploring his unfortunate circumstances and background, to which his crush responds that love knows no bounds.
Mable is found on Chari’s 3rd album which carries other songs like Mariyambutsa, Mebo, Batai manzwi, Guta rinoera, Gombo, Ngoma yemugidhi, Dherira and Church yedu yoenda.
Chari’s earlier works are Ngoma yababa and Vaporofita venhema that he recorded under the rules of ZCC.
In Mable, he sings…Pane chinhu chinondinetsa mumoyo mangu…Imba kudzudzurwa nendove ungaigara? …mai kudokerwa kumaricho ndidye ndipfeke .…baba kuswera kuhovhoni ndiyende kuchikoro…Mable Mable washinga here Mable (There is something eating me up…. I come from a poor background, are you willing to put up with that?).
Towards the end of the song, the singer is heard praying to God to bless his parents who worked hard to raise him. He also asks God to give him a job and bless what he does for a living.
A married father of one, Chari grew up in Bikita with the late Sungura musician Chamunorwa Nebeta who became his favourite artist. He later realised he had a talent after the death of Nebeta.
The budding musician said he has the ZCC community to thank for supporting him from the time he made open his plans to record an album.
“I also thank the church for allowing me to have my music played on national radios,” said Chari.entertainment

Pamushana defends RCZ schools’ athletics title

Claris Kwaramba

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Pamushana High School are US$300 richer after they defended the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) school athletics title by scoping 35 gold medals at the 2018 edition of the competitions held at Jichidza High School last weekend.
Of the 35 gold medals, 20 were won by the girls’ team while the remainder went to the boys. Chibi High came second with 14 while Gutu High took the third place with 11. Alheit High had 10 while the hosts took the fifth position with nine gold medals.
Second-placed Chibi got US$250 while Gutu got $200, with the gold medalists being given US$5 for every event won.
The most outstanding athletes at the event was Pamushana’s girls captain Claris Kwaramba who scooped seven gold medals in 100m, 200m, triple and long jump and in relays. Blossom Mhlanga had six gold medals in 100 and 200m and all relays.
Pamushana athletics coach Simbarashe Mlambo said the win was a result of commitment and the culture of sportsmanship that exists at the school.
“The team does daily morning runs at 4:30 am; even during weekends and that is commendable. We are also indebted to Kundai Maguranyanga who secured a full scholarship at Drake University in USA through athletics. So many pupils want to follow suit,” said Mlambo.
He said Mhlanga and his teammate Brandon Namarika were likely to get American scholarships too.
The competitions were sponsored by Mabhuku Bookshop, Camp Water among others.sport
