GWERU – People at the magistrates’ court in Gweru were stunned when a man who was found guilty of domestic violence begged the court to give him community service instead of setting him free.
Tongai Zireni (43) of Mkoba 2 was found guilty of domestic violence as defined in Section 3[1] as read with section 4[1] of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.
Zireni, who did not have legal representation, stunned the court when he begged magistrate Judith Taruvinga for community service when his 5 months prison sentence was conditionally suspended in full.
The magistrate however rejected the request and explained to him the implication of community service in light of the fact that he had a family to take care of.
The court heard that on January 2 this year Zireni communicated to her wife via a text message to the phone of his wife’s niece stating that he wanted to commit suicide because he was suspecting his wife of cheating.
His wife’s niece went to talk to him and the two returned home in Mkoba 2 were a misunderstanding between Zireni and his wife Kupurai Vhengere over the cheating allegations arose.
The court heard that Zireni then assaulted his wife with open hands and feasts on the head and stomach.
A report to the police was made leading to the arrest of Zireni.

BIKITA – Terrified of going to jail, a convicted stock thief recently broke down before magistrate Florence Nago who had sentenced him and his co-accused to nine years in jail for stealing two donkeys and an ox.
Along with his accomplice Courage Kamutsi (20), Rhino Taengerwei (35) had pleaded guilty to two counts of stock theft but only to cry and plead for retrial after the long jail sentence was pronounced.
Magistrate Nago had found them guilty of stealing an ox belonging to Vongai Munesani of Village 21A, Chief Ziki and two female donkeys belonging to Rueben Nhakaniso of Ziki village in the same area.
It was the State’s case that in the evening of January 06, 2018 Munesani penned her cattle but during the night, Kamutse and Taengerwei, accompanied by a 13-year-old minor, sneaked in and stole an ox valued at US$950.
On count two, the State convinced the court that Kamutse and Taengerwei drove away Nhekaniso’s two donkeys to Village 1 Mkwazi, Chiredzi, where they sold the animals to one Chrispen Magochera. The value of the stolen donkeys was put at US$300.
On passing judgement, Nago said the court had no option as matters of stock theft called for a mandatory minimum sentence of nine years.
She said the accused had both failed to give convincing circumstances in mitigation.
The minor who was implicated in the case pleaded not guilty and Nago ruled that the case will proceed separately.

Mutare – The Mutare City Council has proposed to amend its by-laws saying the existing ones have become archaic and can no longer save their purpose in the quickly changing world.
The move has been necessitated by the continuous vandalism of council infrastructure and the local authority seeks to set stiff penalties to all would-be offenders.
Speaking to TellZim News, Mutare City Council spokesperson Spren Mutiwi said the current by-laws were outdated and were no longer saving according to the current times.
“As the City of Mutare we have started the process of reviewing all our city by-laws to ensure that they become relevant with the changing development trends as the existing ones were bit outdated failing to save,” said Mutiwi.
The process which is expected to be complete by the second quarter of the year will see the council reviewing its major city by-laws which include the water, fire, town planning, shop license, traffic and vendors and also formulating new by laws.
Mutiwi said the council was worried with the careless vandalism of council infrastructure across the town mainly by illegal car washes.
“As the local authority, we have been faced with the problem of vandalism of council property and infrastructure.
“We are coming up with a by-law that will be focusing on tempering with council property and I believe this will go a long way in safeguarding our infrastructure that has been subjected to vandalism especially by illegal car washes in town,” said Mutiwi.local

The Division 1 side Bikita Minerals FC has begun its pre-season trials in preparation for the 2018 soccer season with high hopes of making it into the league of the big boys, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Bikita Minerals FC, who debuted in the Division 1 last season, held a two days trials session at their Lithium stadium last week where over 30 potential players went through a rigorous training exercise to be considered to join the club.
Head coach John Phiri said they successfully held trials and was overwhelmed with the response and confirmed that they had a number of players they were targeting to sign for the upcoming season.
Phiri could not disclose the names of the players who were shortlisted for the 2018 season saying the board had the final say.
“We had a successful trial session last week but at the moment I can’t disclose the names of the shortlisted players because we are waiting for the board’s approval,” said Phiri.
Having been promoted to the Division 1 last season, Bikita Minerals FC failed to live up to the expectations as they managed to win only three of their 30 games and drawing 14.
The Lithium miners, as Bikita FC is affectionately known, were low lying last season finishing two places above bottom placed United Lions FC.
The club is expected to retain most of its players with the likes of Hardlife Chitambo, Courage Bere and former Masvingo united defender Pardon Chinungwa expected to lead the youthful side.sport

A graduate receives a certificate from DCG Chihobvu while ZPCS officer commanding Masvingo province, Snr Ass Com Social Ndanga and another officer look on

Clever Taperamoyo

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) recently held a graduation ceremony for 22 Correctional Officers Grade Three (CO3s) who completed their Supervisory Course Number 1 of 2017 at Mutimurefu Prison.
The graduands were drawn from various ZPCS stations around  the province to undertake the three-month course specialising in prison administration, security management and civic education, prosecution, records management, management concepts, human rights as well as drill and weapon training.
Addressing the graduands, ZPCS deputy commissioner general (DCG) correctional services, Moses Chihobvu said the course was significant in moulding officers to be competent supervisors.
“We expect graduands to exhibit fundamental operational knowledge, skills and attributes required to enable them to execute supervisory roles within our prisons and correctional institutions,” Chihobvu said.
He explained that the course was a deliberate effort to produce correctional officers capable of delivering effective first level supervisory ethics and standards focusing on achieving goals of the organisation.
The training programme was affected by financial problems due to the prevailing economic crunch which continues to affect all institutions across the country.
“We would like to applaud the trainees and the supporting staff for soldiering on in spite of the difficulties and challenges that could have stalled progress during the training programme.
“We are all aware that funding remains a challenge given the country’s prevailing economic snags. The service is also not spared of the financial constraints but these graduands remained resolute and focused on achieving the goal,” Chihobvu said.local

Dunira’s Victoria Ranch headache

Godard Dunira

. . . says Chimusana Bridge is his next move

TellZim Reporter

MASVINGO –  If Godard Dunira ever complains of having severe headaches then know it is all because of the housing scheme projects at the remainder of Victoria Ranch which he said should be incorporated by Masvingo City Council.
Dunira who is the chairman of Vashandi Housing Scheme said there are more than 10 000 houses that have been built by low income earners at Victoria Ranch therefore, the suburb should be incorporated into Masvingo city to allow connection of sewer.
He also appealed to government to intervene and build schools and clinics at Victoria Ranch saying residents there walk long distances to seek medical and educational facilities.
“I have been having headaches because of Victoria Ranch. There are no clinics and schools in Victoria Ranch; residents travel long distances to other locations to get these services therefore, I appeal to government to intervene. We also want the suburb to have tarred roads, sewer and clean water and all this can be possible if Victoria Ranch is incorporated into Masvingo city,” said Dunira.
Dunira, who is also reported to be eyeing Masvingo Urban constituency under Zanu PF ticket, hinted that Chimusana bridge will be his immediate task. The bridge connects Mucheke high density suburbs with the Central Business District (CBD) and it needs to be widened.
“I know Chimusana bridge is council’s responsibility but I think the municipality also needs support from residents. We have Community Development Fund (CDF) which is given to legislators; that money must be channeled towards assisting council on Chimusana bridge,” Dunira said.
“The dumpsite should also be moved from where it is as a matter of urgency. Residents in Runyararo West and Victoria Ranch are at risk because of the dumpsite. We also need a pay toilet in the CBD and shopping malls for vendors,” he added.top news

Masvingo MPs not cabinet material – Rugeje

National Political Commissar Rtd Lt Gen Engelbert Rugeje

. . . Don’t blame ED, go to school
. . . being minister is not as easy as drinking opaque beer

Brilliant Mukaro

BIKITA – ZANU PF National Political Commissar Rtd Lt Gen Engelbert Rugeje recently took a dig on Masvingo Members of Parliament (MPs) saying most of them are uneducated opportunists who make it difficult for the appointing authority to choose ministers from the province.
Addressing party supporters during the celebrations for his appointment a fortnight ago at Nyika growth point, Rugeje said the people of Masvingo are quick to apportion the blame on others when they fail to get ministerial positions.
He said the problem is that the people who get into power do not possess the necessary qualifications to hold ministerial posts.
“We have cried for a long time asking why people from Masvingo are not given ministerial posts. We should know that being a minister is not a walk in the park and it is different from sharing opaque beer.
“It is a task that requires mental capabilities and strong academic backgrounds,” said Rtd Lt Gen Rugeje.
He also took the moment to attack axed Bikita South MP Jeppy Jaboon and former provincial youth league chairperson Nobert Ndaarombe.
He said the two thought were invincible and at one time Jaboon told Rugeje to move out of the barracks and remove his uniform if he wanted to join politics.
“We will ensure that the youth know the ideology of the party. Can you imagine that Jaboon told me to remove my uniform and join politics and now I have removed the uniform and where is he?” asked Rtd Lt Gen Rugeje rhetorically.
He also took the chance to educate the people on the position of the party regarding party regalia as he warned people not to wear T shirts bearing Mugabe’s image when coming to Zanu PF meetings.top news

Women weep uncontrollably as first lady bids farewell

Women weep at rally

Itai Muzondo
Midlands Bureau

MVUMA – Many women who attended President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mini rally at Mvuma Stadium today (Saturday) cried when it was announced that first lady Auxillia Mnangagwa will not be contesting to retain the Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe seat in the upcoming elections.

President Mnangagwa told the crowd that his wife had relinquished the post of MP to concentrate on her new role as first lady.
A group of women wept uncontrollably after the announcement and it took security personnel and ushers to calm and return them to their seats.

Some women, however, started crying long before President Mnangagwa had announced the ‘sad news’, causing many people to suspect that it was all a stage-managed show of emotions.

More to it, known Zanu PF youths from Masvingo were also among the weepers.

“You have been working with Amai Mnangagwa as your MP.
“When I returned from exile, she advised me that since I was now President and she was first lady, she wanted to step down as MP for Chirumanzu-Zibagwe and concentrate on her duty as mother of the nation.
“We have therefore agreed that she steps down and seizes to be MP forthwith.
“This does not mean she will abandon you but she will continue to support you and continue with projects she has been doing,” Mnangagwa said.

He said the Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituency had to choose a replacement.
Mnangagwa had earlier chronicled how the first lady worked in the constituency from the time he was MP for the area in 2008.
He said the first lady continued with the projects when she became MP for the area after his elevation to the Vice Presidency in 2014.
Projects done by the first lady include a women’s bank, community gardens and women’s clubs. She is also leading the construction of a new Zanu PF  district office in Mvuma.
The President spoke glowingly about his wife, pointing out that legislators who had remained in touch with their constituencies like she did deserved to be re-elected.
Currently, the first lady is the Ministry of Health’s ambassador in the  fight against cervical cancer.
She has been to Bulawayo and Gweru advocating for early treatment of cancer.top news

Tellzim bags more awards

Numero Uno…TellZim News reporters Memory Rasa and Tinomutenda Chatikobo pose for a photo soon after scooping the prestigious national Road Traffic Safety Awards held in Harare last Friday.

TellZim Reporter

Tellzim News, the most sought after regional newspaper in the country, has won yet another national award for its outstanding coverage on road traffic accidents.
Two of its interns, Tinomutenda Chatikobo and Memory Rasa scooped the Best Student Reporter of the Year and Second Runner-up respectively at the just ended fifth edition of the Road Safety Journalistic Awards (RSJA) held in Harare last Friday.
The media house was also nominated for the Best Media House of the Year Award which was eventually won by the Sunday News.
Chatikobo and Rasa beat many other interns from national and community newspapers to win the prestigious awards.
Chatikobo received $700 cash and a shield for the grand prize while Rasa went back home $200 richer.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Dr Jorum Gumbo hailed all the winners for a sterling job saying the media play a critical role in fight against road carnage in the country.
“The media have a role to play in as far as the terming of the traffic jungle in Zimbabwe is concerned. The jungle behavior of some road users, unlicensed drivers and those bribed to obtain driving licenses must be exposed. We depend on our media and I am very happy for events such as these as they encourage other journalist to work and expose such corruption,” said Gumbo.
He also took a dig at the VID officials whom he accused of corruptly issuing drivers’ licenses.
“There are a lot of corruption stories at the VID. I have received several reports about how they connive with driving schools to fraudulently issue licenses. That must come to an end,” said Gumbo.
“This is surely unacceptable. Prompt action especially against corrupt officers must be taken. This year, we will deal with everyone and we will visit everywhere to assess how drivers’ licenses are being issued,” he added.
Chatikobo and Rasa are media students at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) and are currently attached at TellZim.
Andrew Kunhambura of the Financial Gazette scooped the Best Reporter of the Year (print) while Tawanda Gudhlanga and Andrew Neshamba were best for radio and television respectively, with each walking away with $700 and a shield.top news
