MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) and the Election Resource Centre (ERC) have partnered for a massive campaign to encourage people to vote as well as to teach them about the new Biometric Voters Registration (BVR).
Last week Saturday, the campaign came to Masvingo where a roadshow was staged in town, attracting a large crowd eager to learn something about the exercise which for many people remains shrouded in misconceptions.
The roadshow was successful in spite of rainy weather partly due to the use of loud music and the presence of Sesi Mamoyo, a local dancing sensation, as well as two Harare-based dance groups; Millenium Queens and Manjenje.
The roadshow was part of ZimRights’ countrywide #10×10 campaign launched in September to encourage each person to mobilise 10 other people to register as voters – with the 10 expected to each mobilise their own 10 so as to create an incremental effect.
ERC was also spreading its #RegisterElectEngage campaign which seeks to encourage people to participate in the entire electoral cycle.
Speaking to TellZim News at the sidelines of the event, ZimRights director Okay Machisa said he was pleased that people in Masvingo had shown the zeal to learn about the new registration system and to assert their electoral rights.
“The first phase of the campaing gave us a number of lessons on how to dynamise the approach of motivating and mobilising citizens. We learnt quite a lot from the first phase and when we approached the second phase, it was totally different from the first one because we now knew where the people are, how they want to be motivated and how we can mobilise them.
“The selection of our roadshow spots is a strategy of going where the people are. We are pleased with the strategic positioning of this particular roadshow as it is being done just a few metres from a registration centre and we can see people are going to register,” said Machisa.
He praised the partnership with ERC, saying a formidable campaign had been put in motion, going into rural areas to spread the message.
“We have been in Mwenezi, Chivi and Bikita. Phase three is targeting areas like Zaka North, Gutu and others. We are in an excellent partnership with ERC; we have been in this game for a long time together. ERC comes with a wealth of training skills, we come with a wealth of mobilisation and motivation capabilities,” said Machisa.local

17-11-2017 – CHIREDZI – Villagers in Dhitoyi area under Chief Tshovani are living in fear after two stray lions killed a three-year-old girl and injured her 12-year-old brother last weekend, TellZim News can reveal.
The area falls under Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC) Ward 17, where human/wildlife conflicts are rife.
Zimparks public relations manager Tinashe Farawo confirmed the grisly incident saying they had received reports of two juveniles who were attacked by two marauding lions last Saturday evening.
“I can confirm that we received a report that two lions killed a three-year-old girl and injured her 12 –year-old brother who is currently admitted at Chiredzi General Hospital.
“The mother was in the kitchen while cooking when she sent her son to collect mealie meal in the next hut. The boy was carrying his sister on the back. The minors were intercepted by the lions as they moved back to the kitchen,” said Farawo.
The boy managed to escape but his sister was mauled to death by the predators that only left the girl’s intestines scattered a few metres away.local

Serious like never before… Army Commander Gen Constantino Chiwenga with President Robert Mugabe

Upenyu Chaota

17-11-2017 – There are growing fears of a coup after Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander General Constantino Chiwenga issued a stern warning to President Robert Mugabe that the military would ‘step in’ if the purges in Zanu PF do not stop forthwith.
The Zanu PF national youth league further raffled the feathers when it responded to Chiwenga’s threats, saying the army boss and axed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa must first account for the missing US$15 billion before they can start issuing any demands.
Last year, President Mugabe stunned the nation when he revealed that the country lost a total of US$15 billion to underhand dealings in the Chiyadzwa diamond fields.
While addressing a press conference on Monday, Gen Chiwenga said the on-going purges in Zanu PF must stop ‘forthwith’ or else the army would ‘step in’.
“The current purging of which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith…the army will not hesitate to step in.  The current counter revolutionary elements which have fomented the current instability in the party must be exposed and fished out,” said Gen Chiwenga.
In the squabbling ruling party, all Mnangagwa’s allies are in the firing line, a situation which has put the military in an uncomfortable position, forcing Chiwenga to call Mugabe to order.
A day after Gen Chiwenga’s press conference, Zanu PF youth league boss Kudzanai Chipanga retorted with a strong-worded statement during a press conference of his own, telling the army boss that he will not be allowed to dictate who should and who should not lead Zanu PF and the country.
“We are however totally against the bulk of the press statement made by General Chiwenga yesterday. We believe that the views he exposed are his personal opinions and not the collective view of the security forces as a whole.
“We are therefore taking a stand against those who are bent on sowing division among our people and also those taking advantage of the privilege of their appointment by our President to extort guarantees and immunity for fugitives, border jumpers from the same appointing authority. These people should be warned that we the youths are watching in our millions and those who wish to ride on the back of the tiger will end up inside,” said Chipanga.
Chipanga accused Gen Chiwenga of selectively reading the Constitution, warning that the youth will fight against any attempts to stage a coup, just like what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s loyalists did when mutineers tried to take over power in July 2016.
Political analysts who spoke to TellZim News dismissed Chiwenga’s threats as mere talk, saying a coup is unconstitutional.
Professor Nhamo Mhiripiri said it is very unlikely that the army would stage a coup.
“I don’t think the military will stage a coup because they know it will be unconstitutional and any government that comes to power through that process will not be recognised by SADC, AU, UN and the international community.
“Yes the military are a political force in the Gramscian sense where they juggle and balance the competing civilian political forces without blatantly taking over. Theirs is a delicate but discretional role in the context of contemporary constitutionalism that is based on civilian participatory democracy,” said Prof Mhiripiri.
“The President like ours is a civilian first and foremost and as a civilian voted for in a popular democracy, he is then put in charge of not only civilian authority but also becomes Commander in Chief of the Defense Forces. The military knows this such as ours with a liberation history knows this very well and their best bet is to support a civilian politician to take over the reins of power,” Prof Mhiripiri said.
Another analyst Dr Davidson Mabweazara Mugodzwa, however, said the country is on the verge of a civil war and the army should have intervened way back when former vice president Joice Mujuru was unjustly fired from both government and Zanu PF.
“The army has the right to intervene before the situation gets out of control. The country is on the brink of a civil war and the military, as a major stakeholder of our politics, have to take control. It will not be a full scale coup but the military will have a major role to play until the country goes for the election.
“The skirmishes in the ruling party have to be arrested and the people behind it are known so the military has to chip in and probably detain such people. Mugabe is no longer in control of his power hungry wife and her faction G40 so someone in the form of the military has to stand up and say enough is enough,” said Dr Mugodzwa.
Controversial politician and Mnangagwa strong man Energy Mutodi in 2015 wrote on his Facebook wall that Zanu PF had attained terminal velocity in its gravity-accelerated freefall and there was no stopping it.
“Those forced out of Zanu PF have every reason to celebrate as they have ejected and parachuted to safety before Zanu PF crashes and explodes. They have God to thank for saving them from having to demean and dehumanise themselves by having to worship Mugabe and his wife and behave like robots without free sense.
“What we have learned from North Africa is that just before the regime falls, we will hear of defections and abandonment of ship by many at the top who will condemn Mugabe to save their own hides and be counted with the people to avoid public payback. They will say we were working from inside to bring change but they will be lying,” wrote Mutodi then.
Before his death, the late Rtd Col Kudzai Mbudzi said President Mugabe had outlived his usefulness and his continued stay in power coupled with his age was bound to bring down Zanu PF.
“Mugabe has outlived his usefulness and is doing a major disservice to himself and the country. He is destroying the legacy he built and unfortunately, some people are praising him for that. Stubborn flies will follow the corpse to the grave,” said the late Mbudzi.top news

Masvingo passes no confidence vote on Mugabe, Grace

President Robert Mugabe and wife Grace

…bans Mugabe regalia

…mobilises 24 buses to participate in solidarity march

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO — The Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) here today (Friday 17 November 2017) has passed a vote of no confidence on the under siege President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace saying the duo has failed in their mandate entrusted to them by the generality of Zimbabweans.
Allies of Generation 40 (G40) faction were also not spared as they were randomly given no confidence vote before the province also resolved that any party regalia with Mugabe and Grace’s faces should be banned forthwith.
The PCC accused President Mugabe of succumbing to a bed room coup and ceding his one centre of power authority to his wife who went on to abuse it provoking the military to step in and call Mugabe to order.
Reading the resolutions, provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira said President Mugabe has lost control of the party under the influence of his wife so he should resign immediately and pave way for a new leader.
“We call for an immediate resignation of President Mugabe. In the event he refuses to resign, we call for his immediate recall from both the party and government.
“We are in solidarity with the action and processes taken by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) led by the Commander General Constantino Chiwenga towards the formation of a new, democratic and constitutional government.
“We denounce the G40 cabal and its leaders among them Grace Mugabe, Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kusukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao, Walter Mzembi, Dr Paul Chimedza and Kudzanai Chipanga among others,” said Chadzamira.
Masvingo has mobilised 24 buses to ferry people to Harare for the solidarity march organised by the war veterans and they have strictly banned the wearing of Zanu PF regalia.
The war veterans will be showing solidarity to the military for their act of valour in safe guarding the ethos of the revolution which they say have been usurped by the G40 cabal.
Zanu PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke also weighed in saying he wished President Mugabe is given more life so he can see how a performing economy works under the new leadership compared to his destructive tenure.
“It’s time to gather our courage and confront Mugabe head on. Many people were afraid to say it but the greatest soldier General Chiwenga could not fold his hands while the country was run to the ground.
“If we had the money we would gladly give it to the soldiers to treat themselves for liberating us for the second time,” said Matuke.
He said the country belongs to everyone not one person or family hence the need to get rid of the Mugabe family from the echelons of power.
“We have respect for our leadership but when they derail we call them to task. We do not want cowards at this stage because some people died for this country,” said Matuke.
Zaka Central legislator Paradzai Chakona made his emotions visible when he made a prayer saying “Mwari tavakunamata. Inzwaiwo minamato yedu. VaMugabe nemukadzi wavo Grace hatichavadi (Lord we pray. Hear our prayers. We no longer want President Mugabe and his wife Grace)”.topnews

General Chiwenga

MASVINGO – The Team Lacoste Masvingo provincial youth and women’s leagues today, Thursday, said they were behind the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF)’s current intervention in national politics.
Speaking at a press conference held at the show grounds, youth league political commissar Brian Munyoro said they were in support of the army’s actions that he said were meant to address challenges in the party and the national economy.
“Noting that the Defence Forces led by General Chiwenga instituted a smooth peaceful transition to ensure constitutionalism and democracy in the ruling party, further noting that criminals and corrupt elements had surrounded His Excellency, the President R. G Mugabe, we give our unwavering support to the revolutionary commander,” said Munyoro.
He emphasised the need to vote for a new youth chairperson saying the current chair Nobert Ndaarombe was a member of the rival G40 faction.
Munyoro had been suspended together with other colleagues that include Ezra Chadzamira who had been suspended as provincial chair and Maina Mandava who faced the chop from the provincial women’s league.
On her part, Mandava indicated that Team Lacoste was now back in charge of the provincial women’s league. She further said the G40 faction had pushed them away from the President Robert Mugabe simply because they had refused including the first lady Grace Mugabe’s name in party slogans.
“The party had its slogan which included the party and the president’s names only. We were now being forced to include the first lady’s and failure to do so was interpreted as going against the President,” said Mandava.topnews

MWENEZI – People travelling along the Buchwa-Rutenga road area are doing so in the shadows of lurking danger owing to the rise in daylight robberies, TellZim News has learnt.
The robbers are reportedly offering travellers lifts in their vehicles but only to turn against them and rob them of their valuables along the way.
Although Masvingo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he needed time to verify the reports, TellZim News understands that during the past weeks, a number of passengers fell into the robber’s traps.
A Hebron High School teacher, identified only as Mrs Mawewe was one of the victims who were recently robbed of her laptop, cash and later on dumped in the forest along the road.
“Mrs Mawewe was destined for Sarahuru business centre and was offered transport by people who were driving a Toyota Noah along the Buchwa-Rutenga road. Halfway to the destination, the driver suddenly turned into the forest and the robbers produced knives before robbing the woman of her laptop, cell phone and US$40,” said a source.
The victim filed a police report at Sarahuru police base.
Recently, Simon Moyo of Bopi village under Chief Mawarire also fell victim to the robbers along the road and under similar circumstances.local

CHIREDZI – Forget Ngwenyeni (18) from Ndali village under chief Tshovani was recently slapped with a 10-year jail term by Chiredzi regional magistrate Judith Zuyu for raping his 16-year-old niece.
Three years of the sentence were, however, conditionally suspended.
The State, led by Moreblessing Rusere, convinced the court that Ngwenyeni raped the girl when he slept over at her place on August 18.
When he committed the offence, he had watched a movie until late hours.
The complainant went to sleep and left Ngwenyeni with her guardian but he too later went to sleep earlier than Ngwenyeni.
The complainant told the court she just woke up and found Ngwenyeni on top of her and she alarmed her aunt who was sleeping in an adjacent house. Accompanied by the aunt, the complainant went to report the matter to the police the same day.
On August 21, the complainant was medically examined and it was observed that penetration had occurred.
Magistrate Zuyu described the offence as the highest level of madness because the offender and the complainant are related.
“The complainant is your niece and you were expected to protect her considering that her maternal parents were not around…there is need for the community to be protected from such abuses,” said Zuyu.local

The story was broadcasted on the television station’s 20:00 hrs main news bulletin on October 15. On October 17, the duo also went live on National FM and continued to utter their deceitful claims.

18 years on the run: murder suspect released as witnesses fail to show up

MWENEZI – A 59-year-old man, who went on the run for 18 years after allegedly murdering his aunt before being arrested in July this year, will breathe a sigh of relief after the High Court ordered his release from remand prison because State witnesses are nowhere to be found.
Mwenezi magistrate Honest Musiiwa granted that Ellimon Masocha, of Nyika village under Chief Maranda, be released following an order from the High Court.
Prosecutor Willard Chasi told the court that the High Court had ordered the release of Masocha from remand prison as State witnesses in the matter are yet to be located.
He said once the witnesses are found, the State will proceed with its case by way of summons. Some of the witnesses in Masocha’s case are said to be in South Africa while others are said to be already dead.
The State case is that on February 4, 1999, Masocha approached his aunt who was working in her fields. He began to accuse her of being a witch who was causing poverty to his family.
Masocha allegedly stuck his aunt on the neck using a hoe handle resulting in her instant death.
After committing the offence, Masocha was reportedly spotted by eye witnesses running away from the scene and he immediately fled to South Africa only to be arrested last July upon his return.local
