MWENEZI – The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) is helping to spread the gospel of societal harmony by organising football and netball games for communities in Mwenezi.
Matches which were held at Rutenga growth point last Tuesday saw winners walking away with prizes.
In the men’s soccer category, four teams participated and the first round saw the defeat of Chigaravata team by Rutenga Red Buzzers at penalty shootouts.
The following round saw the walloping of Hot Chillies by Rutenga United again on penalty shootouts that followed a goalless full time. The finals saw the thrashing of Rutenga United by the Rutenga Red Buzzers by one goal to nil.
The Rutenga Red Buzzers coach Eliphas Phiriri expressed gratitude to the event organisers for supporting the interests of the community.
“I thank the Catholic Commission for organising this event which enables people of diverse age groups to mingle and cheer together. Such occasions are necessary especially to the youth because they prevent anti-social behaviour like drug abuse,” said Phiriri.
In women soccer, two teams participated while in netball four teams took part. The Rutenga Netball team took position one followed by Sacred Heart High School girls while Kangaruru and Garavatata took position three and four respectively.
Recently, the Rutenga Red Buzzers team performed impressively at a sports gala organised by the National Aids Council (Nac) as a way of spreading awareness on HIV and Aids.sport

The 29th edition of the COPA Coca-Cola soccer tournament roared into life last Friday, two days after the tournament was successfully launched at Rujeko High School in Mashonaland Central, with various schools competing at cluster level.
During the tournament launch, National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) president Johnson Madhuku indicated that the age groups had changed from Boys U16 and Girls U17 to U15.
“Nash is very excited by the introduction of U15 age groups; these are clearly Form One and Form Two pupils who have been given a much deserved chance to develop their skills. I want to appeal to my fellow colleagues that let us not rob these youngsters the opportunity to showcase their talent by playing over-aged players,” said Madhuku.
“I want to thank our sponsor Coca-Cola for the unwavering support they have been giving to develop soccer at grassroots. Nash will come up with a tracking system for these young stars that would have excelled in COPA Coca-Cola games,” he added.
Delta sparkling beverages general manager Moses Gambiza said Coca-Cola will continue to sponsor the schools tournament and announced that participants will also have a chance to compete in the regional championship later this year.
“We continue to be proud sponsors of this initiative which is an important, long term investment for our youth. The Nash-organised soccer tournament has made a mark on the lives of thousands of secondary school pupils, their families and communities throughout Zimbabwe over the years.
“We do hope and believe this tournament will continue to pay tribute to junior soccer players who have worked very hard over many years to attain the standards required to represent their schools and even their nation. Participants now have a chance to play in the regional tournament, penciled in for later this year,” said Gambiza.
The tournament is expected to proceed to zonal level next Friday and the national finals will be held between July 21 and 22 at Chipindura High School in Mashonaland Central.sport

Shabanie Mine, FC Platinum display good sportsmanship

Lizwe Svesve (FC Platinum assistant coach) and Takesure Chiragwi (Shabani Mine coach)

ZVISHAVANE – ‘Whose yard is it?’ was the question which found no answer as the mining town’s premier league soccer giants Shabanie Mine FC and FC Platinum ended their much fancied bout in a draw at Maglas over the weekend.
Last weekend, Zvishavane was divided into maroon and white, and green and white according to fans’ allegiance to their respective teams but united as one family for the love of the game. They sang along supporting their teams in a fully packed Maglas stadium during the incident-free match.
No one expected Shabanie Mine FC to put up a spirited fight against their arch rivals FC Platinum the way they did as their camp often faces challenges of training session boycotts by players due to cash constraints.
It was however the smooth competition between the rivals that got many soccer fans talking as it contrasts sharply with the violence that often plague encounters between other big rivals like Dynamos and Highlanders.
The home team found themselves one nil behind in just three minutes of play when Talent Chawapiwa cutely slotted in a goal after Shabanie Mine made a defence error.
They however made a quick comeback with an accurate pass from Delany Chivandire to Wellington Taderera who slotted the ball past the exposed FC Platinum goalie Petros Mhari.
FC Platinum are the latest giants in Zimbabwean football who have failed to get a clear victory against the newly-promoted Shabanie Mine FC, joining the likes of Caps United, Dynamos and Highlanders.
FC Platinum assistant coach Lizwe Svesve was happy with the results at Maglas as his side managed a point away from home.
“It was a good game and I think a draw was a fair result for both teams,” Svesve said.
Takesure Chiragwi, the Shabanie Mine gaffer was delighted with the game which became his first experience of the Zvishavane derby.
“A draw is a fair result, I am happy that the boys managed to come back after conceding an early goal,” Chiragwi said.sport

CHIVHU – A 55-year-old neighbourhood watch officer, Clopas Sigudu of Gwerevende village under Chief Nyoka, was last week sentenced to 10 years in jail for raping his 16-year-old neighbour.
Sigudu was given the lengthy prison sentence by the Chivhu Magistrates Court led by Fadzai Mutombeni.
The State, led by prosecutor Nicholas Mabvongodze, charged that on a period between December 1 and 31, 2016, the juvenile was asleep when Sigudu burgled through the locked door of her bedroom.
After gaining entry, he ordered the girl to keep quiet, massaged her before raping her once.
Sigundu went on to threaten the girl not to disclose anything to anyone, threatening that the price of divulging the matter would be death and also gave her a dollar as payment for abusing the girl.
However, on the May 31 this year, things turned nasty for the rapist after the girl divulged the sexual abuse to her grandmother.
This was after the girl had experienced stomach pains which she suspected to be as a result of the abuse. A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of Sigudu.
The court also heard that Sigudu had for long pampered the girl with goodies and money to spend at school as his way of getting closer to her.
He had also became jealousy and protective of the girl and would harass the girl’s male school mates that he found in the girl’s company.local

Twelve years in prison for Gweru toy gun robber

Shumirai Zhou

GWERU – Andrew Goboza (35) of House Number 2587 Ascot, Gweru, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by Gweru Magistrate Morgan Nemadire after he was convicted of using a fake pistol to rob a lodge receptionist of two cellphones.
The court heard that on May 24, 2017 the accused went to Mint Leaf Lodge, Gweru, and approached the complainant, Innocent Moyo (38), posing as a guest who wanted to book a room for the night.
The accused then suddenly produced a metal-like toy gun from his jacket and pointed it at the complainant threatening to shoot him.
Shaken by what he thought was a real gun, Moyo gave in and the robber took away a Samsung Galaxy and a Nokia cellphone that were at the front desk.
As the robber attempted to flee, he was apprehended by a passersby and this led to his arrest and both the stolen cellphones, valued to US$100, were recovered.
Goboza, who was convicted on his own guilt plea, said he wanted to make some money to pay for his rentals when the court asked him why he had committed the crime.
“My landlord was threatening to evict me from the room and my family had no food. That is why I committed the crime; I wanted money. I picked a butt of a gun at a scrap yard where I used to pick metal objects for sale.
I later picked other metal objects and found wood and decided to produce a toy gun which I kept in the bushes,” Goboza said.

Woman suffers miscarriage, assaults mother-in-law for it

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – A 23-year-old daughter-in-law who suffered a miscarriage for the umpteenth time went on the rampage bashing her mother-in-law whom she accused of being a witch, the Mwenezi Civil Court heard last week.
Constance Zhou, who is currently residing with her mother in-law in Chivasa village one under Chief Neshuro, denied the charges of bashing Vonayi Mugwadi when she appeared before Magistrate Honest Musiiwa.
However, Mugwadi told the court that Zhou assaulted her with open hands while accusing her of being a witch who caused her miscarriage.
“My son and my daughter-in-law always accuse me of being a witch….The night Zhou miscarried, she visited some prophets and that is the very day she came and beat me alleging that I was a witch who was behind her miscarriages.
“I want both of them to vacate my homestead and pack their belongings with immediate effect,” Mugwadi demanded.
On her part, Zhou confirmed the existence of bad blood between her and Mugwadi but tried to turn the tables claiming it was Mugwadi herself who always accuses her of witchcraft.
“Mugwadi is the one who accuses me of conniving in witchcraft with some villagers. She has the habit of scolding me especially when I fall pregnant. She used to call me a goblin….manje ini ndavakuvasiya pamusha pavo vasare zvakanaka ne mwana wavo vari vaviri,” Zhou told the court.
Magistrate Musiiwa granted Mugwadi a protection order and ordered both Zhou and her husband to desist from accusing Mugwadi of being a witch.
He ordered them to shift from Mugwadi’s homestead and look for their own place of residence.local

Pupil dies during ‘bury alive’ game

Shumirai Zhou

GWERU – Polite Tekwane (22) of Marere village under Chief Mukoka, Gokwe appeared before Gweru High Court Judge Justice Martin Makonese facing charges of culpable homicide following the death of Zanele Ngwenya in a bury alive game.
Tekwane, whom the State had chosen to charge with culpable homicide instead of murder, pleaded guilty and said he did not intend to kill the girl since they were playing.  He was sentenced to four months in prison which were wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit any crime involving violence for the next five years.
Prosecutor Tafadzwa Mpariwa told the court that Tekwane and the deceased were pupils at Muyambi Primary School. On September 12, 2010 the two were among other pupils sent home from school for non-payment of fees.
On their way home, they passed through Mandisarara River to play the sand burying game; taking turns to bury and exhume each other.
Tekwane dug a shallow pit in the sand and got hold of the deceased who was only eight-years-old and buried her. He laid the deceased on her stomach, sat on her back and started covering her body, including the head, with sand.
The young girl tried to free herself but failed as Tekwane would press her head down until she was too weak to keep trying.
Another pupil noticed that Tekwane had buried the girl’s head and decided to rescue her but was threatened by the accused who later left the scene leading to the victim’s death due to suffocation.
The deceased’s body was discovered by other school pupils who then made a report to the police leading to Tekwane’s arrest.
On November, 15 2010, Dr E. T. Manyarara examined Ngwenya’s body and concluded that the cause of death was suffocation.local

Man begs businessman to kill daughter for $12 000

Elliot Jinjika

CHIVHU – In a stranger than fiction case, a 27 year-old man shocked many when he was arrested for allegedly attempting to sell his eight-year-old daughter for US12 000.
The man fell for a trap and disposed of his daughter to police detectives whom he thought were genuine body parts traffickers engaging in some juju-driven business practices.
It was heard in the Chivhu Magistrates Court that on March 27 this year, Tapiwa Vhutani contacted Obert Juru, a Chivhu businessman, through phone messages asking him if he would want to buy children for use in rituals to grow his business.
Vhutani was not asked to plead but was placed on remand pending trial at the High Court where he will face charges of conspiracy to commit murder after full investigations by the police
Led by prosecutor Nicholas Mabvongodze, the State alleged that Vhutani kept on pestering Juru about the matter saying he was in dire need of cash.
The businessman decided to alert the police and a trap was set against Vhutani. It was heard that Vhutani was then told that prospective buyers from South Africa will be in Chivhu in two days’ time and he was misled into believing that he could finally sell his daughter.
Vhutani allegedly travelled from Kadoma to Chivhu in order to meet the said prospective buyers.
Upon his arrival in Chivhu, intelligence details from the police were introduced to Vhutani as the prospective buyers and they agreed on the $12000 buying price.
In no time, Vhutani departed to Yuli farm, his rural home in Wedza, where he took his daughter and brought her to Chivhu.
Vhutani allegedly surrendered the child to the ‘buyers’, telling her that one of them was an uncle who was going to stay with her for some time.
He was then handed a brown envelope with US$50 inside but was marked $12 000 and, as he left the scene, was subsequently arrested by other detectives who were hiding close by.
It was disclosed that Vhutani had seen Juru’s South African-registered vehicle and thought he could make a deal with him out of conviction that body parts business was good in the neighbouring country.local
