BULAWAYO – With big dreams and confidence, Thandinkosi Sibanda, a stunning local model who is deaf, recently defied the odds and contested alongside other fully able-bodied beauties in the Miss Cultural Zimbabwe pageant held at Horizon Pub.
The 21-year-old beauty turned many heads through a flawless performance and finished as a finalist ahead of a bevy of other beauties.
The tittle, held on May 26, saw Zandile Ncube becoming Miss Cultural, with Amanda Nyoni  and Anita Kubi as the First and second Princesses respectively.
 “It felt really great contesting for the first time against models who are not living with my condition. I performed the same way as other contestants, with the only difference being that the others could hear while I could not,” said Sibanda.
Iconic Model founder and Miss Cultural Zimbabwe organiser, Nilton Makazhu praised Sibanda as a remarkable model with vast talent.
“For the first time, Miss Cultural has had a model living with a disability and she turned out to be impressively good. She has a bright future in front of her,” said Makazhu.
The immaculate Sibanda began her modelling career only this year when she contested at the Miss Deaf Zimbabwe Pageant in March where she was crowned Miss Personality.
Inspired by the television show Project Runway on Fashion TV, she has now set her sights on the fashion industry and is working to begin her studies in that area.
Her family and friends, especially sibling Bonginkosi and friend Leona Nyarota have been supportive of her dreams and passion.
She hopes to support the modelling industry for people living with disabilities and help other deaf models live their dreams.
“I would like to see more beauty pageants for the deaf taking place in the country and see their modelling industry grow,” Sibanda said.local

MASVINGO – People living with disabilities must stand up tall and take all the opportunities that are available with the knowledge that traditional leaders and the constitution are by their side, chiefs from Masvingo province have said.
They were speaking at an engagement meeting recently organised by Masvingo Young Voices, an organisation which seeks to advance the welfare and rights of people living with disabilities.
Topics that were discussed included disability vis-à-vis such issues as land, education, marriage rights, accessibility of public places, and employment.
An aide to Chief Charumbira, James Mazvidza said people living with disabilities needed not wallow in self-pity but should stand up and claim the same rights as everybody else because they were no lesser citizens.
“People living with any form of disability must know that they too are created in the image of God and must therefore stand up with confidence. Musapfeka zviso zvekuhwisa tsitsi. Zvasiyana nekare kwainzi kana mai vakazvara chirema vainzi durai zvamakaita. 
“As traditional leaders, we are fully aware of the challenges faced by people living with disabilities and they have our support. Every village head is obliged to keep record of people with disabilities in his village so that their needs are properly handled should there be any social-uplifting programme from the government,” said Mazvidza.
Chief Murinye, on the other hand, spoke on the issue of people living with disabilities being denied access to land saying the Lands ministry was responsible for land allocations but traditional leaders should always be ready to assist.
“If you feel a village head has violated your right to agricultural land, you have to take action and approach higher authorities. Nobody should be deprived of the right to earn a living simply because they are living with a disability. The chiefs are there to help protect your rights,” said Chief Murinye.
Simbarashe Makazhe, a Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) student who relies on the services of a wheelchair to move about, said though progress had been made, much more still needs to be done to defeat discrimination.
“It begins at a personal level; the attitudes that we have and the language we choose to use every day. Why not shun such retrogressive terms as chirema icho, bofu iro, mbeveve iyo?
“We also want an inclusive social arrangement whereby no institutions or facilities are built exclusively for us, we want inclusive schools so as to fight stereotypes,” said Makazhe.local

President Robert Mugabe has once again made clear his unreserved support for Masvingo South legislator and Minister of Tourism Walter Mzembi by publicly ordering the political leadership in the province to respect the youthful minister whom he said deserved yet another term as a Member of Parliament (MP).
Addressing thousands of Zanu PF supporters at a youth interface rally in Masvingo last week, Mugabe said he was disappointed to learn that there were some people who did not like Mzembi in the province despite the fact that the Tourism minister was among his best ministers in the current cabinet.
The President openly told the crowd that Mzembi was not going anywhere.
The veteran politician said he learnt about the problems affecting Masvingo province through Mzembi who later on facilitated a dialogue between the MPs in the province and the two ministers Shuvai Mahofa and her Pyshchomotor counterpart Josaya Dunira Hungwe.
Hungwe and Mahofa are known for fighting Mzembi in the province and are advocating for the takeover of sugarcane farms that belong to Tongaat Hullet while Mzembi and other MPs in Chiredzi are vehemently opposed to the idea.
“It was Mzembi who came to me and told me that he was no longer in good books with ministers Hungwe and Mahofa over the issue of Tongaat Hullet sugarcane farms. Mzembi told me that he wanted to facilitate a meeting between MPs from Masvingo and those who were advocating for the takeover of sugarcane farms … we held two meetings – one at State House while the other one was held at Triangle.
“Up to now we are still failing to have a common ground…. however, I want to tell you that no one shall be allowed to grab a sugarcane farm from Tongaat Hullet,” said Mugabe.
However, Mugabe’s remarks did not go down well with Team Lacoste sympathisers who are already plotting to defy the President through demonstrating against Mzembi.
Leaked WhatsApp group messages seen by this publication show that Lacoste sympathisers are planning to humiliate Mugabe by slapping Mzembi and Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Mandiitawepi Chimene as well as Manicaland provincial chairman Samuel Undenge with votes of no confidences.
According to the leaks, the demonstrations against the trio are supposed to be kick-started anytime soon.
In the WhatsApp messages, Brain Munyoro – a well-known Lacoste sympathiser and Zanu PF provincial youth executive member for Masvingo province, and his fellow group members, engage in a no-holds barred discussion against Mzembi, labelling him a sell-out due to his alleged close links to Mugabe.
Asked to comment about how he felt after Mugabe’s remarks in Masvingo concerning his role in the issues affecting the province, Mzembi said there was need for Masvingo leadership to respect each other.
He also bemoaned how some of the party bigwigs were now abusing Mugabe’s name in order to deceive the public into believing that whatever the ministers or politburo members were saying had the President’s blessing.
“Nhamo yedu mumumusangano ruvengo nedzvene, ndihwo uroyi hwemasikati, makuhwa evarume anopfuura emadzimai. Chimwe chifo manyepo, kurevera vakuru nhema ‘President vati’, ndanga ndina President’, ‘Ndatumwa na President’, kusaita matyira nezita ra President … ko isu tinogara navo mumatare makambonzwa tichisevenzesa zita ravo pese pese here? Dai tamira izvozvo tisevenzere vanhu takanyarara,” said Mzembi.
TellZim News is reliably informed that Mzembi is being sacrificed by Masvingo’s top Zanu PF leadership for opposing the takeover of Save Valley conservancy as well as Tongaat Hullet sugarcane farms.
In the cabinet meeting on Tuesday last week, Mzembi reportedly urged Mugabe to take advantage of the Masvingo interface rally to talk about policy issues mainly concerning Tokwe-Mukosi dam as well as the Tongaat Hullet sugarcane farm invasion saga.
With nine years at the helm of Tourism Ministry, Mzembi automatically qualifies as the most senior cabinet minister from Masvingo province.local,topnews

MWENEZI – Several farmers last week converged at Chizumba for a livestock field day where knowledge on how to best care for cattle in a drought-prone region was shared.
Chizumba feedlot was constructed by labour from the community after receiving materials from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (Fao) for the purpose of temporarily sheltering beasts destined for slaughter.
Feed for the livestock is loaned to the farmers by the Success Microfinace Bank.  
Provincial livestock production development officer Aaron Muchazivepi, who was the guest speaker, advised farmers in the district to prioritise cattle rearing as it the most lucrative farming options available.
 “Besides Masvingo being one of the provinces with the highest numbers of cattle which are more than one million, Mwenezi district is at the top of all other district in terms of the number of cattle. There is need to adopt strategies that ensure cattle survive even in the face of severe droughts,” said Muchazivepi.
Success Microfinance Bank managing director, Innocent Sithole said his institution issued loans even to those who previously had been regarded as ineligible due to issues of collateral.
He said the loans are given in the form of feeds not money as cash was prone to being diverted.
The field day was attended by various dignitaries and stakeholders among them provincial veterinary officer Dr Ernest Dzimwasha, Success Microfinance Bank provincial business development officer Pascal Makwarimba, abattoirs representatives, farmers and ordinary people.local

ZVISHAVANE – Former Dynamos striker Takesure Chinyama has joined ambitious Zvishavane side FC Platinum from Polish Division 3 side LZKS.
When contacted for a comment, FC Platinum spokesperson Chido Chizondo confirmed the new development at the club.
“Yes so far we have signed Takesure Chinyama who has been based in Poland,” said Chizondo.
Chinyama, who scored 26 goals for his Polish team in the just ended season, was unveiled at Mandava Stadium on May 26.
The striker once formed a deadly combination with the self-proclaimed prince, Rodreck Mutuma under former Warriors coach Calisto Pasuwa.
Speaking to the media after an encounter with Tsholotsho FC which they won by a goal to nil last weekend, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza hinted had that he needed at list two new strikers.
“Definitely something needs to be done upfront. Defensively we are ok, but I think we need two more strikers. We have won this match but we did not play well especially during the second half. However a win is a win even though I was expecting a bigger margin,” said Mapeza.
The Pure Platinum play gaffer also took that opportunity to express his ‘deepest condolences’ for the untimely death of former Warriors winger Edzai Kasinauyo.sport

MWENEZI – In an effort to please other congregants, a 22-year-old self proclaimed pastor from Zion Christian Church stole a goat and exchanged it with a musical drum, the Mwenezi Court heard last week.
Steven Moyo of Rutavo village under Chief Negari was convicted of stock theft on his own plea of guilty.
Magistrate Honest Musiiwa sentenced him to twelve months imprisonment of which two months were conditionally suspended.
The remaining ten months were set aside on condition that Moyo performs 350 hours of community service at Matande Primary School.
Asked by the Magistrate why he stole the goat, Moyo confidently stated that he wanted to buy the drum.
“Mbudzi ndakaiba nokuda kokuti ndaida kundotenga ngoma yeZion,” Moyo told the court.
The State alleged that sometime in February this year, Moyo went to the grazing lands and stole Tawanda Machava’s goat which he later exchanged for a drum from Otias Musara.
A police report was made leading to the arrest of Moyo and the stolen goat was recovered.
In another case, Simbarashe Chikango of Rushaya village under Chief Nyamande in Gutu who was convicted for stealing a bicycle and was sentenced to 15 days behind bars or to alternatively pay a US$30 fine.
Appearing for the State, Willard Chasi said on June 12, 2017 at around 01:00 hrs, at Rutenga market, Chikango approached William Kotore who was asleep at the market and requested for a place to sleep.
When Kotera woke up the following morning, he discovered that both his bicycle and Chikango had disappeared.
He filed a police report and with the help of the police, the bicycle, with a net value of US$150, was recovered at Chikango’s house.local

MUTARE – A Chipinge man was whipped to death after being accused of stealing his friend’s beasts.
Manicaland Acting Police Spokes person Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the death of Watson Chikumbu (40) of Chief Musikavanhu Village in Chipinge.
Assistant Inspector Chananda said Chikumbu sustained serious injuries after he was whipped by his friend Thomas Mabure.
“We are looking for a Chipinge man named Thomas Mabure who allegedly whipped his friend to death using a sjambock.
“Mabure visited the now deceased Chikumbu at his homestead and accused him of stealing his two beasts. The suspect then grabbed and dragged him for a short distance before assaulting him all over the body by the sjambock.
“The now deceased returned home and told his cousin brother Fungai Simango that he was beaten all over. The cousin brother then alerted fellow villagers who then took him to Zamuchiya clinic. He died before admission.
“We are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the culprit who is still at large to report to any nearby police station,” said Assistant Inspector Chananda.local

MWENEZI – A homeless mentally-challenged man who had been squatting at Neshuro growth point for many years died last week after his clothes caught fire, causing him severe injuries that killed him two days after being admitted at hospital
Paradzanai Shonhai is understood to have been suffering from mental health problems for decades and had had no decent abode since the 1990s.
He was laid to rest at his rural home in Mukachana village under Chief Chitanga.
Ward 5 councillor, Master Makope confirmed Shonhai’s death saying the injuries that he sustained had caused his death.
“People found his burnt body in the morning and he was rushed to Neshuro Hospital but he died two days after admission and his death was necessitated by injuries caused by the fire,” said Makope.
He said Shonhai was given a decent burial after the community around the growth point mobilised resources.
It is suspected Shonhai’s clothes could have caught fire after crawling too close to a fire he had started to keep warm in the night.
His burial was attended by council representatives, Neshuro District Hospital Staff, representatives from various political parties, various church denominations and ordinary people among others.local

CHIPINGE – Zanu PF councillor for Chipinge ward 26, Misheck Busangabanye has denied reports by some villagers that he makes money from a Family Aids Caring Trust (FACT) relief programme in his ward.
Speaking to TellZim News, Busangabanye blamed infighting in his political party for the reports, saying those who wanted to take over his position were responsible for spreading falsehoods against him.
“I know who did it, it’s the people who are interested in my position seeking to put my name into disrepute. They only want to tarnish my image now that 2018 elections are around the corner. It’s just a game of politics.
“I am not a beneficiary of FACT so how can I involve myself in things that do not concern me. I want to know who is behind all this and I will order my security to investigate more on the issue. I am interested to know the culprit who sought to tarnish my image,” said Busangabanye.
FACT has been running a relief programme in Chipinge by which it provides US$50 to needy villagers as part of fighting hunger but there are complaints that the programme was being abused especially in ward 26.
Some villagers, however, alleged that Busangabanye was ordering potential beneficiaries to pay him US$10 each for them to be included and a monthly US$1 to stay on the scheme.
Meanwhile efforts to get a comment from FACT were fruitless by the time of going to print.local

MASVINGO – Zanu PF has roped in popular gospel musician Reverend Togarepi Chivaviro of the Ebenezer fame to perform at the Masvingo youth interface rally at Mucheke stadium tomorrow.
Rev Chivaviro, who is currently in South Africa, will fly into the country today ahead of tomorrow’s youth rally which is part of President Mugabe meet the youth rallies across the country.
Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Mahofa confirmed the coming of Rev Chivaviro saying she will host him until he performs at the rally.
“The song Ebenezer is played frequently on Zanu PF events and this time I have talked to Rev Chivaviro to come perform at the youth interface rally and he assured me he is coming.
“He is in South Africa but said he would be pleased to be part of the entertainment and I will take care of him during his visit,” said Mahofa.
Rev Chivaviro becomes a second well recognised artiste to perform at the rallies after Soul Jah Love performed at the second leg of the rallies at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare.local
