Under pressure Chiwa takes dig at ‘greedy’ Tongaat

Darlington Chiwa

Beatific Gumbwanda

13 March 2017, CHIREDZI – A seemingly overwhelmed Chiredzi West legislator, Darlington Chiwa has directed his guns at Tongaat Hullet, accusing the sugar giant of neglecting the educational needs of surrounding communities in order to keep the people illiterate and exploit them as cheap labour.
Speaking at Batanai Primary School in section 23 recently, Triangle, Chiwa lambasted Tongaat for failing to build permanent structures at the school. He said the sugar giant was the enemy which wants to keep an uninformed society for commercial gain.
“Tongaat has no interest in the welfare of the communities. The company has the social responsibility to develop the community but they are not. The company is useless because these children are studying under trees.
“They want these children to stay uneducated so that the company can have cheap labour as cane cutters,” Chiwa charged.
His accusations, however, have been described by some as stupefying, given that the MP was recently at the forefront of defending the sugar company against planned seizure of its land.
Chiwa organised fierce resistance against plans by Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Mahofa to seize vast parts of the company’s land for redistribution.
The legislator’s critics have also dismissed him for being insincere, saying he was only criticising Tongaat for political expediency, having realised that he is likely to lose his parliamentary seat to the former Tongaat executive, Farai Musikavanhu in next year’s elections.
“Chiwa has realised his folly of supping with the devil and is desperately trying to make amends. He defended a greedy Tongaat Hullet when Minister Mahofa wanted to take some of the land to give to landless locals. Now he has realised that he no longer has support. He can’t fool anyone,” said a source.politics

13 March 2017, MWENEZI – A 25-year-old driver accused of killing five people in a horrific traffic accident which happened along the Masvingo – Beitbridge road last year has appeared at the Mwenezi Magistrates Court facing charges of culpable homicide.
Courage Salani pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Magistate Honest Musiwa.
He argued through his lawyer that one wheel of the vehicle he was driving on the fateful day burst due circumstances that were beyond his control.
Giving evidence before the same court, one of the accident survivors, Mercy Maregere, however, said Salani was over-speeding his overloaded vehicle, with the front seat accommodating three passengers at times.
The State’s Willard Chasi said on April 4, 2016 at around 11:00 hrs, Salani was driving a Toyota Granvia, registration number ADS 8545, to Beitbridge.
At the 126 kilometre peg, Salani lost control of the vehicle resulting in it veering off the road and overturning several times before it landed on its wheels.
Four passengers; Fidelis Muzvidziwa, Colonel Chirilele, Rampson Tseliso and Fiona Ndanga died on the spot while Samuel Sibanda died upon admission at Neshuro District Hospital.
Salani was remanded out of custody and the trial will continue on April 12.local

Bhasikiti an empty basket – Mahofa

12 March 2017, MWENEZI – The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Mahofa last week attacked Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) candidate in the upcoming Mwenezi East parliamentary by-election, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, describing him as an irrelevant empty basket with nothing meaningful to offer.
Addressing Zanu PF supporters at a rally at Rutenga Primary School to drum-up support for the Zanu PF candidate, Joosbi Omar, ahead of the April 8 by-election, a fired-up Mahofa mocked Bhasikiti as a confused political failure whose party exists merely in name.
“Kuno ndinonzwa kuti kuna Bhasikiti, iri ndiro bhasikiti risina kana chinhu zvaro….yangova tswanda yofanzirofa. Look at what happened in Masvingo RDC by-election, ZimPF’s Rosiwetta Madzivire was humiliated and she immediately resigned….that is how Zanu PF operates,” Mahofa said.
She also denied that Zanu PF was thriving on partisan distribution of public resources like farming equipment and inputs, saying anybody who deserves should benefit from the programme.
“Kana fetiraiza yauya ipai chero nyoka kuti dzizive kumusha,” she said.
Party provincial secretary for administration, Alois Baloyi took the rally as an opportunity to informally introduce Ezra Chadzamira as the provincial chairman elect.
“Tauya naye wamakasusukidza….though it is not yet official, but 12 000 votes against 4 000 votes….it is obvious that this one (Chadzamira) is the provincial chairman elect,” said Baloyi to which Chadzamira immediately stood, did a Zanu PF slogan and sat down.
Baloyi was referring to the over 12 000 votes that Chadzamira obtained in the inconclusive Zanu PF provincial chairmanship election against his rival Retired Colonel Mutero Masanganise’s paltry 4 888.politics

MSU, GZU get tough with students

12 March 2017, MASVINGO – As the economic crisis continue to bite, many students from the Midlands State University (MSU) and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) have found themselves in a quandary, with the two institutions resolving to bar non-registered students from attending lectures.
A host of students have failed to register for the new semester over non-payment of fees as parents continue to struggle to raise fees for their children.
Several students at GZU who spoke to TellZim News said security guards were manning entry points to restrict access to lectures.
“Guards are manning all entry points leading to lecture rooms asking for identity cards and failure to produce one results in you being denied entry. The identity cards are only given to students who have paid full fees or three quarters of the required money. We are stuck and wish we had not come to school,” said one student.
GZU Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo told TellZim News that the process is not meant to punish students but was aimed at making them come and present their particular cases to the university so that a win-win situation can be found.
“It’s too early to speak of how we will help but honestly, the process will make the students visit the registration office and file their challenges. Having their challenges on record will enable us to help them swiftly,” Zvobgo said.
The Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education; Dr Godfery Gandawa, however, said it was not allowed to block students from accessing lecture rooms.
“I am not aware of that but it is totally not acceptable. I urge students to approach me when they face such challenges than suffer in silence.
“Universities know the procedures given by the Ministry which they should follow with regards to students who fail to pay fees. I will make sure that this situation is addressed as soon as possible,” Gandawa said.education

Buhera brothers sentenced 20 years for roasting father

Lloyd Shunje in Mutare

12 March 2017, MUTARE – Justice Charles Hungwe last week sentenced four brothers from Buhera to 20 years imprisonment each for the brutal murder of their father Sam Chigaya using burning plastics.
The four had accused their father of practising witchcraft.
Sitting on the Mutare circuit of the High Court last week, Justice Hungwe found Blessing (24), John (42), Joel (29) and Mathias Chigaya (26) guilty of murder as defined in Section 47(1)a or (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).
It was the State’s case that on December 11, 2015, the brothers and their father consulted a faith healer after a sequence of mysterious deaths in the family.
The faith healer reportedly pointed to Sam as the source of all the misfortunes which had befallen the family.
Out of anger, the brothers grabbed their father and put him in his bedroom and told him to produce his juju, but the old man failed saying he did not have any stuff of that kind in his possession.
The brothers would, however, have none of that as they were convinced that their father had a lot to hide. They started a fire in a roofless house, burnt plastics containers of opaque beer and continuously dropped molten plastics all over their father’s body with his hands and legs tied.
Sam was then force-marched into a fire while shackled to a harrow.
The helpless victim was later found in his room by his three wives and he told them what had happened but the brothers threatened to punish anyone who dared take the victim to hospital.
A post-mortem carried out at Rusape General Hospital showed the victim died of severe burns.
Malvern Musarurwa appeared for the State.

Zvishavane apologises for water hiccups

Jubilee Mahlamvana

ZVISHAVANE – Zvishavane Town Council secretary, Tinoda Mukutu has apologised for the town’s intermittent water problems, saying a breakdown of two raw-water pumps at Ngezi water works had disturbed efforts to ensure a flawless water supply.
Two of the four raw water pumps at Ngezi water works, Mukutu said, had recently stopped working.
“It is true that we are having a challenge with our water pumping system due to sudden failure of two of our raw water pumps at Ngezi water works,” Mukutu said.
He indicated that the pumping system could have been overwhelmed by excessive mud due to flooding conditions in the river.
Mukutu also said the water that is pumped to the town is sometimes not clear due to red soils on the catchment area.
“We are quite aware of the problem and we are trying to use a variety of chemicals such as Ammonium Sulphate, HTH and Chlorine Gas to clean the water and make it clearer,” Mukutu said.
He also indicated that the town council was working very hard to improve the quality of water supplies, saying large amounts of chemicals are used daily for purification.
The heavy rains pounding most southern parts of the country have flooded rivers, and in many cases have flooded pump stations while clogging suckers at intake points with mud.
This led to recent water shortages in places like Mberengwa, Ngomahuru, Mashava and Chivi growth point.local
