Government neglects Chilonga bridge

Chilonga Bridge

Beatific Gumbwanda

03 Feb 2017 – CHIREDZI – For many years, government has turned a blind eye on the pathetic state of Chilonga Bridge despite its potentially vast economic significance as well as its critical importance to people of the area.
The low-lying bridge, which straddles the mighty Runde River at about 100 metres in length, has been left in a state of disrepair since independence and is easily flooded during the rainy season.
The derelict bridge provides a very short link between the town of Chiredzi with villagers in Chilonga, Malipati and Chikombedzi right up to Sango border post.
People living in these areas endure untold suffering every rainy season with relatives being washed away at the flooded bridge or in homemade boats as they try to cross the wide river.
Children who attend Chilonga School are also using the makeshift boats to cross the river
The coast of travelling shoots up when the river is flooded because transport operators will have to use longer winding routes like the Daramakanaka, Mupapa to Triangle road which is at least 80 km long.
During the just ended holidays, more than five people were reportedly swept away in the river and they have not been accounted for.
An Isuzu Truck was also swept away and the driver has not been found.
Chiredzi West Legislator, Callisto Gwanetsa, said he had a problem with the transport ministry which is dilly-dallying on the issue despite its urgency.
“I and Isaac Matsilele (Chiredzi Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer) visited the ministry and talked to one Munodawafa, and they came to tour the area but nothing has been done,” said Gwanetsa.
He also said he had trying to engage Tongaat Hullet and Malilangwe Trust to see if they can help.
If the bridge is upgraded and the 100 km stretch of road between Chiredzi and Sango border post is tarred, it would provide a shorter route to the sea thereby saving the country hundreds of millions of dollars that are spend yearly travelling to the ports Durban, Windhoek and Dar es Salaam that are hundreds of kilometres away.news

Zinara gives Chiredzi paltry US$240k for roads

Beatific Gumbwanda

03 Feb 2017 – CHIREDZI – Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) has allocated a measly US$240 000 to Chiredzi Town Council for road construction and maintenance for the year 2017.
The pittance means the deplorable state of roads in the town will persist, with Lion Road, which was ‘refurbished’ a mere three months ago, already pothole ridden due to poor workmanship.
Engineer Wesley Kauma confirmed that they received an allocation of US$240 000 for this year’s road maintenance and construction.
They were also directed to spend 30 percent of the funds (US$72 000) on maintenance and the rest ($168 000) for construction.
Kauma also indicated that most of the roads are old and they need new ones as patching of roads is temporary.
“Most of our infrastructure is 30 years old and maintaining them should be a temporary measure. We have to build new infrastructure,” he said.
Despite making millions of dollars every year through toll fees and vehicle registration money, Zinara does not remit enough to rural and urban councils, and the national road infrastructure continues to crumble under its watch.
In Chiredzi South, a flooded Runde River continues to be a danger to villagers, with no sign that the ramshackle Chilonga Bridge will be upgraded.news

Cervical cancer patient appeals for help

Moses Ziyambi

03 Feb 2017 – A critically ill Modie Chirunda, who is suffering from cervical cancer, has pleaded with well-wishers to help her meet the treatment costs and other daily costs of living with the condition.
The 51-year-old Chirinda comes from Svuure village, under Chief Bota in Zaka, Masvingo province.
She was diagnosed with cervical cancer at Parirenyatwa Hospital back in 2011 after experiencing the symptoms and seeking help at local clinics.
It was, however, Ndanga Hospital in Zaka which referred her to Harare Hospital from where she was later referred to Parirenyatwa.
She then underwent the colposcopy procedure and her biopsy came back positive, meaning that her cervical cells had become abnormal.
“I have to undergo chemotherapy twice a month and I also have to buy adult diapers all the time as well as betadine bath. I don’t have the means to get all the money that is required and I am often in pain.
“I haven’t settled all my bills at Parirenyatwa. They are now threatening to send me debt collectors,” Chirinda told TellZim News in an interview recently.
She also revealed that it costs US$75 for her to undergo a single chemotherapy session at the hospital.
“I also have to find transport money to travel to and from Harare for the treatment. The diapers cost US$10 for a packet of 10 which is not even enough to last me for a week,” said Chirinda.

Chief Charumbira fingered in by-election threats

Chife Fortune Charumbira

Upenyu Chaota

03 Feb 2017 – NEMANWA – Chief Fortune Charumbira is being accused of threatening villagers that food aid will be withdrawn unless they vote for the Zanu PF candidate in the Masvingo Rural District Council (RDC) Ward 12 by-election set for February 25, 2017.
The seat will be contested by Zanu PF’s William Shangwa and the opposition People First (ZimPF)’s Rosewetta Madzivire.
ZimPF claims that Chief Charumbira has warned villagers to vote ‘wisely’ if they want to continue receiving food aid and agricultural inputs being dished out by the government under the command agriculture programme.
Having recently lost the Bikita West parliamentary by-election, ZimPF hopes to restore lost confidence.
ZimPF Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Jeffryson Chitando said intimidation has also started and accused Chief Charumbira as the chief culprit.
“We failed in Bikita because people were being threatened by traditional leadership and it seems the same thing is now happening in Ward 12. Our team on the ground is working hard to make sure that the people are not deterred from voting for their favourite candidate, Madzivire,” Chitando said.
He said Chief Charumbira has taken it upon himself to ensure a Zanu PF victory but expressed confidence that his party will still win.
“Madzivire is in good books with the people of ward 12 because she used to be their councillor and stands a better chance for a clean sweep victory. Zanu PF has never played fair and is using food aid and agricultural inputs as leverage.
“We get reports that Charumbira has his team of spies which takes note of all those who attend ZimPF meetings so that they will be denied food aid,” said Chitando.
Efforts to get a comment from Chief Charumba were fruitless by the time of going to print.politics

Sex starved woman dumps hubby for neighbour

Cephas Shava in Mwenezi

02 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – A sex starved wife from Mwenezi could not wait longer for her husband to return from South Africa and got involved with a neighbour, who is a member of Marange Apostolic Church, in several sex escapades which resulted in her getting pregnant.
Nyaradzo Nherera dumped her husband Nyasha Chirashiwa, of Mutapwa village under Chief Neshuro, for an elderly Jeffius Tasarira (60) who eventually got her pregnant.
Tasarira has since been asked by members of the Chirashira family members to pay a token of regret to show contrition for having an affair with Nyasha’s wife.
A family court called to deliberate the issue initially ordered that Tasarira pay three cattle but later on reduced the fine to US$100 because Tasarira was found to be unemployed and so poor that he did not have even a single cow at his homestead.
In their testimony at the family meeting, both Nherera and Tasarira are said to have admitted that they had been seeing each other.
Chirashiwa is however said to have strongly rejected the money with family members saying he went back to South Africa without bidding farewell to his wife.
Nherera is said to be now in a big dilemma as she is not sure whether his husband will ever come back home or not.news

…Kasukuwere rejects defeat

Upenyu Chaota

02 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – In former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh’s style, Zanu PF acting chair for Masvingo province, Amasa Nhenjana made a sudden U-turn at a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting last weekend, refusing to step down just moments after agreeing to hand over the chairmanship position to Ezra Chadzamira.
During the PCC meeting, Nhenjana had sheepishly read the resolutions of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) which is said to be dominated by Team Lacoste sympathisers.
He seemed a defeated man and his alleged G40 loyalists appeared dispirited as their Team Lacoste nemesis knocked them off their pedestal.
They, however, quickly regrouped after the PCC meeting and did a volte face, calling for a press conference at Chevron Hotel where they nullified the resolutions of the PEC claiming that Nhenjana had been forced to surrender power by Team Lacoste.
Their claims found succour in Zanu PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere who also rubbished Chadzamira’s appointment during a telephone interview saying he will immediately look into the matter when he comes back from abroad.
“I am out of the country at the moment and have not been fully briefed on the matter. I can however say to you that I am shocked by the way some of our comrades are handling party affairs in Masvingo.
“I will be able to straighten things up when I get back. I am told some members are bend on reshuffling party structures but there is no such thing in Zanu PF,” said Kasukuwere.
Chadzamira is an alleged Team Lacoste fanatic and was last year involved in a bitter wrangle with Nhenjana over the powerful chairmanship position after the dismissal of Paradzai Chakona.
At the hastily convened press conference, Nhenjana’s grouping sought to prove their own political clout and to boost confidence among their ranks by calling somebody whom they said was party heavyweight; secretary for administration Ignatius Chombo, and putting him on loud speaker for everyone to hear that he was in agreement with their about-turn.
Flanked by provincial political commissar Jeppy Jaboon, provincial chairperson Veronica Makonese, Gutu South legislator Dr Paul Chimedza, Chiredzi North legislator Robert Mukwena among other backers, Nhenjana declared that he was still in charge, saying he can only be removed by the politburo which appointed him.
Other sympathisers who were away also made phone calls endorsing the press conference.
“The move to demote me was done unprocedurally and we categorically reject it. I was appointed by the politburo and the same procedure should be used when demoting me. For now, I am still acting chairperson.
“I am surprised they want to demote me now after we have won in Bikita West,” said Nhenjana.
The G40 group claims credit for Zanu PF’s recent parliamentary by-election victory in Bikita West and accuse Lacoste of trying to sabotage the by-election so as to cast aspersions on their popularity.
They threatened to run parallel structures in Masvingo if Team Lacoste does not back down from their attempts to ‘usurp’ power from Nhenjana.
While reading their resolutions to the press, Nhenjana was seething with anger as he attacked Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister, Shuvai Mahofa and her Psychomotor counterpart, Josaya Hungwe for engineering the debacle.
“These are the same elements that wanted to sabotage the party in Bikita West and after failing, they now want to see the party losing in Mwenezi East where our focus is at the moment,” said Nhenjena.
Team Lacoste, meanwhile, was savouring their victory at a caucus meeting they convened at Dhiyo shopping centre.
The new chairman Chadzamira said it was not his decision to be reinstated but a collective decision by the party’s provincial executive.
“I was reinstated by the PEC and Nhenjana was there but did not object. He is the one who read the resolutions so I am surprised that he is now making an about-turn,” said Chadzamira.news

February 2, 2017 – Masvingo – In a movie like style, four armed robbers who were on board an AA motors cross border bus masquerading as passengers, jumped from their seats armed with pistols some 10 km before Ngundu and sprayed unknown substance on passengers and went on to take cell phones, money and other valuables from them.

The incident happened at around 0300hrs today (February 2, 2017).

Reliable sources from the police who spoke to TellZim News said the bus left Beitbridge border post at around midnight with nothing seeming wrong.

“As the bus was about to reach Ngundu, four passengers jumped from their seats armed with pistols and ordered everyone to remain in their seats while the other two robbers sprayed some unknown substance on the passengers.

“All the passengers complied with the directive including the driver who was ordered to keep driving,” said the source.

The robbers are said to have ordered passengers to bring out money, cell phones and other valuables and surrender to them.

After having searched the passengers, the robbers ordered the bus driver to stop the bus and to go and file a police report.

A report was filed at Masvingo Central Police Station on Thursday morning and investigations are said to be underway.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula was not reachable for a comment.news

Bhasikiti ready to reclaim Mwenezi East

0

TellZim Reporter

Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) top official and former Masvingo Minister for Provincial Affairs Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, who was fired from Zanu PF for aligning with the sacked former Vice President Joice Mujuru, has announced that he has an unfinished business in Mwenezi East.
Bhasikiti was recalled from Parliament where he was representing the constituency after being suspended from the party.
He now says the death of his successor, Joshua Moyo, has rekindled the people’s hopes for ‘real’ leadership.
Moyo died at Masvingo General Hospital a few weeks ago after a long illness.
He had won the seat uncontested but only managed to go to Parliament less than four times in several months due to poor health.
Bhasikiti says the people of Mwenezi were robbed of representation as a result of Zanu PF misdemeanours.
“Look these people are not stupid, they know that Zanu PF was playing some tricks with the ultimate goal of denying the people of Mwenezi some fair and real leadership. Throughout this term, the people of Mwenezi were being ridiculed and denied representation.
“When I was recalled from Parliament, I stood aside as I wanted to see what Zanu PF was going to do.…only to observe them mocking the people of Mwenezi. If a by-election is announced, I will be ready to contest,” Bhasikiti said.
Unlike in Bikita West where Zim PF fielded Kudakwashe Gopo, a novice who had hitherto never ran for elected political office, Bhasikiti said Mwenezi will have a different story.
“I was recalled before I could do anything…. I have unfinished business in Mwenezi and this is the time to stand for my people. I will not allow Zanu PF to mock them again …not this time,” added Bhasikiti.news
