CHIREDZI – Chiredzi’s council-run clinic, Tshovani Polyclinic, the only clinic which is run by Chiredzi Town Council, has gone for 12 months without running water from the tapes and, as a result, the maternity ward has since been closed, TellZim News can reveal.
Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Amadeus Shamu, Zimbabwe Diabetes Association President Dr John Chamunorwa Mangwiro, Chiredzi District Medical Officer, Dr David Tarumbwa, Chief Tshovani and other stakeholders toured the intitution last Monday and witnessed the rot.
A staffer at the clinic narrated how the clinic has been operating for the past one year without even a drop of water coming from the taps.
“The situation here is pathetic, we have been operating for many months without water and the clinic has suspended maternity services,” said the official.
The official also lamented the fact that apart from having inadequate water supply, the clinic has also been operating for many years without enough staff.
“It’s not water alone that we do not have but we are also understaffed. We are only ten and the clinic needs at least 24 staff members for two shifts but we only have one shift because of inadequate staff,” said the official.
Dr Mangwiro expressed regret of the situation and recommended that the government together with the council should look at the issue and improve services at the clinic.
“I think the situation here needs the government to work closely with the council and provide for the necessities so that the clinic here can be fully utilised. There are very good machines here for maternity, there is space but it’s being underutilised because of a simple matter,” said Mangwiro.
Chiredzi Districtict Medical Officer, Doctor David Tarumbwa echoed the same sentiments stating that there was need to revive the maternity ward at the clinic since expecting mothers do not have another option except Chiredzi General Hospital which is now functioning under severe strain.news

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi district has for the first time hosted the 2016 Wold Diabetes Day commemorations, a move which is set to raise diabetes awareness in the district.
More than 800 people in the district were screened for eye diabetes and blood pressure for free during the occasion, thanks to the efforts of the Zimbabwe Diabetes Association (ZDA).
The celebrations were graced by various medical experts, Chiredzi district Members of Parliament (MPs), Tongaat Hullet staff and other stakeholders.
Minister of Health and Childcare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, in a speech read on his behalf by Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu, said the 2016 world diabetes celebrations came at a time when the discovery of insulin was made.
Two Canadian physicians; Dr Frederick G. Banting and Professor John MacLeod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923 “for the discovery of insulin” after they had successfully tested their new ‘discovery’ on a severely diabetic 14-year-old boy in January 1922.
“This year’s commemorations come at a time when medical experts discovered insulin which was given to diabetes patients to prolong their lives,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.
He urged people to take care of their health by eating green vegetables and traditional foods.
“I urge people to eat lots of vegetables and traditional foods such as madora and harurwa and monitor their eating habits while exercising every day in order to reduce chances of becoming diabetic,” said Parirenytwa.
Members of the public who attended the event urged government to make provisions for free diabetes and BP testing at all health centres in the country.
“I am also grateful that we received a training here on what diabetes is and from now onwards, I can monitor my health,” said Monica Chaguma.
ZDA president, Dr John Chamunorwa Mangwiro encouraged people to monitor their health since diabetes is spreading in Zimbabwe at an alarming rate.
Medical experts estimate that millions more people would be diabetic at younger ages within the next few years due to the rapid spread of the chronic condition worldwide.news

Family appeals for US$50 000 for daughter’s liver transplant in India

MASVINGO – For the Botsa family of Rujeko in Masvingo, March 13, 2016 was a day of jubilation as they had received their bundle of joy, Thayel Makatendeka, who became their first daughter among four siblings.
Eight months from her birth, the family has already gone through a lot as the infant suffers from a rare liver condition called biliary atresia.
The girl needs an urgent operation to correct the defect through a liver transplant which, at the moment, can most conveniently be done in India.
Though the girl’s father; Kumbirai Richard Botsa (36) has offered a piece of his liver for his daughter’s survival, a total of US50 000 is still needed for the surgery; a figure too high for the family to afford.
Speaking to TellZim News, Thayel’s mother, Adelaide Botsa (33) said Thayel was born a healthy baby but her eyes started to turn yellow a few weeks after her birth.
“We went to the Masvingo General Hospital and we were told that it was jaundice and she was given medication for the condition,” said Adelaide.
“We administered the medication but there was no change, so the doctor took a scan and told us Thayel’s liver was 3,5cm bigger than normal. At five months, due to the persistence of the jaundice, we were then referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare,” Botsa said.
At Parirenyatwa, a doctor prescribed valgan cyclovir and Botsa said the very first day they started giving her the medication, she got worse as she started groaning, she no longer slept well and her tummy began to bulge.
“We then decided to go see a local doctor here in Masvingo who suggested that we go see a specialist in Harare since all the symptoms indicated that the baby had biliary atresia,” the mother said.
“We went back to Parirenyatwa Hospital and the baby was diagnosed with biliary atresia and we were told she needed an urgent liver transplant either in India or South Africa,” she said.
“When the doctor delivered the news to us, my husband and I cried because we knew we could not afford the money. My husband works as a loss controller at ZESA Masvingo and is the sole breadwinner,” Botsa said.
Botsa said her baby’s life now lies in well-wishers’ hands, and she appealed to the public to help them raise the $50 000 required for the surgery, travelling, admissions and other eventualities.
Well-wishers can donate the money on: Bank: CABS, Branch: CHIPINGE, Account No: 9040419140 or Ecocash on: 0774 100 122.news

Diaspora ready to fight for right to vote

People living outside the country say they have been emboldened by the government’s hardline stance against their right to vote and have now decided to fight for that right through litigation and political processes.
Government is often criticised for conveniently respecting the diaspora in as far as their remittances are concerned only to treat them with disdain when they ask for their political rights.
Many pressure groups, faith-based organisations and external wings of opposition parties gathered in Parktown, Johannesburg on November 12, 2016 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to commence a spirited fight to win the diaspora vote.
The gathering fell under the Diaspora Vote Coalition (DVC) and was facilitated by Bishop Paul Verryn, the renowned philanthropic clergyman of the Methodist Church.
In a press statement, the DVC, agreed “to fight with one voice and in one corner” so as to attain the right to vote for all people of Zimbabwe living outside the country.
The DVC include such groups as the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF), #This Flag, Tajamhuka, Global Zimbabwe, and external wings of Zapu, MDC-T, MDC-N and the Liberal Democrats of Zimbabwe (LDZ).
“The signing ceremony marks a clear statement of intent by Zimbabweans resident in the diaspora that they are ready to fight for this inalienable right, until it is realized,” reads the statement.
As part of its roadmap, the DVC resolved to pursue a number of campaigns, including approaching the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe for an order declaring provisions of the Electoral Act, that restrict  the right to cast postal votes to government employees and their spouses only , as unconstitutional.
The coalition will concurrently seek to interdict the State-aligned Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) from commencing any voter registrations activities, until the matter of the diaspora vote has been heard.
This will be accompanied by vigorous lobbying of the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), African Union (AU), Sadc and other relevant structures to support the cause.
ZEF chairperson and human rights campaigner, Advocate Gabriel Shumba said the diaspora vote is a non-negotiable right.
“The Constitution is unequivocally clear on the rights of all citizens to vote…. Arguments advanced so far to deny us this fundamental right are unconvincing. The alignment of the electoral laws to the new Constitution can be done in a jiffy,” said Adv Shumba.
Recently, ZEC head, Rita Makarau cited resource constraints as the reason why the diaspora cannot register to vote and cast their ballots in their countries of residence.
She said those who wanted to vote in 2018 should come back home and register to vote then come back again to vote in their wards, an expense that most diasporans cannot afford.news

Spar manager found dead

Police seaching for Mwale’s missing car at Chimusana Bridge
TellZim Reporter

MASVINGO – Residents of Masvingo were horrified when the lifeless body of Masvingo Spar manager, Emmanuel Mwale was pulled out of the polluted waters of Mucheke River where he spend two days trapped in his car after being swept away while trying to drive across a flooded Chimusana Bridge on Sunday.
Mwale had dropped his friend Lovemore Mupambamwa with whom he was reportedly shared some drinks at Manhede beer hall in Mucheke.
Some cars are reported to have turned back when they saw that the bridge was flooded and they actually warned Mwale to turn back.
Mwale is said to have attempted to drive his Nissan X-Trail across the low-lying bridge but got swept away.
There are also reports that Mwale could have been drunk and fell into the river after missing the bridge.
A motorist driving behind Mwale, who witnessed the car disappearing into the water, then went to the police to make a report.
The eye-witness is said to have been drunk himself and he failed to give a consistent account of what he had seen.
Balmain Spar staff however made a police report of their missing manager the following day. The police launched a search and rescue that Monday morning but found nothing since the car had been swept further downstream and was buried in a deep pool.
A suspicious object which later turned out to be the missing car was noticed appearing in the pool on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 leading to the resumption of the search.
Three brave citizens jumped into the water and retrieved Mwale’s body which was still trapped in the car wreck.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula took time to advise drivers to exercise caution when driving at night and in the rain.
“It is unfortunate that the case we were dealing with ended up in tragedy which claimed the life of Emmanuel Mwale.
“Drivers should be careful when driving during the rainy season so as to prevent any mishap that may come along the way. It is also important to avoid drinking and driving,” she said.News

Residents sell donated mosquito nets

Davison Marenga

ZVISHAVANE – Some cash hungry people in Zvishavane are engaging in brisk business trading mosquito nets that are being donated by the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (Unicef).
A number of vendors in flea market stalls provide a ready market for traders of the nets.
The vendors resell the nets at exorbitant prices of up to US$10, much to the dismay of other people who are yet to benefit from the Unicef programme.
Residents who spoke to this publication criticised the trade in donated mosquito nets as an insensitive act of greed.
They said most beneficiaries lie about their family sizes so as to get more mosquito nets than they actually need, with the remainder going the market.
“Ndonzwa kurwadziwa ndichiona umwe munhu achitengesa manets isu tisina. Vamwe vakutoita business nawo,” (It’s painful that some people are selling the nets when there are people who are in dire need of them) said Tawanda Murehwa.
“They are selling the nets to the already struggling people. This area is heavily infested by mosquitoes so these greedy people are profiting from a bad situation,” Fungai Sibanda.
Other residents said aid organisations must carefully vet their targeted beneficiaries before distributing mosquito nets in order to ensure that their generosity does not get abused.
Unicef has donated mosquito nets to many mosquito infested areas in Zvishavane.news

Open letter to my patron Mr President

0

Dear Bob

I hope this finds you well Mr President; the patron of the Zombabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), Commander In-Chief of the Defense Forces, the Chancellor of all State universities who is also First Secretary of Zanu PF. I am addressing you in my capacity as an esteemed liberation war fighter and I will try to be both blunt and frank with you – zviye zvatinoita pachicomrade.
In case you doubt my war credentials as many people think Mapombi anopenga. To put the record straight, I am not crazy inhamo yamakatiunzira iyi Mr President. Taitombopfekawo masuit iwaya amunopfeka zvaitonwisawo mvura mufunge but now ndava kupfeka mamvemve nekuti nyika iyi makavondonga mega iyi. Anyway, for my war credentials please do not hesistate to consult our highly esteemed chairperson Chris Mutsvangwa, Douglas Mahiya, Francis Nhando and Headman Moyo, just to mention a few. I am very sure they will tell you that we were together in the trenches and it’s just that I was operating in Chirimudombo area imimi muri kujeri kuGonakudzingwa uko.
I also worked closely with the later Cde Rex Nhongo ‘aka’ Solomon Mujuru who died in a mysterious inferno a few years ago. Asi mukati waiva moto uri wega here uya wakauraya Mujuru nhai Mr President? I am not suggesting anything here kungobvunzawo hangu just like a Cde who was saddened by the seemingly controversial death of a fellow war vet.
Anyway, I will be precise Mr President. Mapombi is very sure that the recent announcement by my fellow Cdes that we have disappointed you from the position of being our patron came as a surprise to you especially considering that you had handed over 13 Ford Ranger vehicles to the war vets. Mr President, 13 vehicles is just a drop in the ocean – it’s nothing considering the number of war vets in our association. To be frank with you, it’s a mockery – a misguided and misplaced priority to be more precise. Hatidyi mota isu Cde!
We want money to pay school fees for our children and to buy food. Period! This is one reason we decided to relieve you from the role of patron because you have failed to take seriously the welfare of war vets.
Secondly, we have noted with concern that you have formed your own faction, Gushungo 40 (G40) which is run and supported by war deserters. E-eh ndokwakazara vanhu vakatiza hondo kuG40 the likes of self-proclaimed Robin Hood, Professor Jonathan Moyo. You have sided with these Mafikizolos at the expense of War vets to an extent that you decided to kick-out our leader Chris Mutsvangwa both from parliament and Zanu PF, while Mahiya, Moyo, Nhando and Matemadanda have been dragged to the courts. And makambotidira mvura ine unye nema tear gas gore rino when we tried to have an amicable meeting with you. Kkkkkkkk is this what we really fought for Cde Mr President? For ministers to loot over $400 000 from Zimdef and stole land earmarked for the youth? No, no, no!
As if that is not enough, your wife Marujata, as Dzikamai Mavhaire affectionately calls her, belittled us at Chiweshe rally early this year together with Mboko saying there was nothing special about being a war vet. Marujata denigrated us calling us all sorts of names. There is nothing special about being a war vet – really? Hanzi makatumwa here kuenda kuhondo kwacho. Anyway, I hope you clearly heard what Cde Jabulani Sibanda said – hanzi power will never be sexually transmitted. Kkkkkkk please tell Dr Amai that. Anyway, this is nothing but just a gentle reminder Mr President.
In addition, the country is now on its knees due to corruption and poor sound economic policies. War vets are failing to access their little $200 from the banks due to cash crisis because your G40 faction front runners have looted all the hard cash. Our Cdes are sleeping in corridors so that they can join bank queues early in the morning. Civil servants are no exception and this has seriously affected production in the country since people are now spending much of their time in bank queues. Surprisingly, we haven’t seen any one of your ministers in these long winding queues. Kkkkk even ana Dzikamai Mavhaire still walks through the banking hall straight to the manager’s office and given his money at our CBZ Masvingo branch, while the poor civil servants and war vets are in queue.  Then imagine kana vana Mavhaire vava kuZimPF vachiri kushandisa power rekuZanu PF kudaro kuzoti vachiriko? Anyway, Mapombi thank God that she is not a bank account holder at any bank. This is the extent to which you have destroyed our beloved country Mr President.
Of late, students have been embarrassing you at graduation ceremonies as they demonstrated demanding jobs. Kkkkkk kusvika your security team yava kutorera vanhu anything they would suspect kuti chingashandiswa kunyoresa an anti-Mugabe message at graduation ceremony. But hats off to the NUST student akaita zvekudeedzera after they have taken away pens kkkkkkk ndofunga next graduation vanhu vachanwiswa musombodhiya so that mavoices avo become horse and they won’t be able to shout loud.
Anyway, it is against this background that we, the liberation war fighters, have decided to disappoint you from being our patron with immediate effect. We might consider re-appointing you in future if you stop forthwith sidelining with G40 and becomes a fair leader. We will not miss you because there is virtually nothing to write home about you for the entire period you was the patron of war vets except that you increased our poverty.
It’s almost lunch time ndibvumirei ndiende hangu kundokanga maputi angu for lunch while I wait for fellow war vets to come and buy me some rotten bananas here at Dr Grace Trading Centre. But Mphoko be warned; I am going to confront you at the conference.
Yours Faithfully
War Vet Mapombi, mboko imboko!
