Masvingo ready for National Youth Games

Masvingo – The provincial team to the youth games has declared its determination to win the on-going 14th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games after spending a week in camp in preparation for the games which are being held in Chinhoyi.
Team Masvingo trooped into camp at Victoria High School last week on Monday and spent the whole week preparing for the games which will end on Sunday.
Masvingo, which has fielded over 168 participants, hopes to surpass last year’s performance in Mutare where they finished at fourth position in after managing to go with an a relatively small18 member team to represent the province.
Masvingo’s Technical Manager, Titus Madzingo said this year’s team will bring good results given the availability of resources which enabled a proper selection of the best team.
“This time we are much prepared for these games, we had enough resources to select the best team from our province.
“In athletics, we have participants who took part in the just ended Confederation of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) games,” said Madzingo.
The province’s girls handball and boys boxing teams will go in as defending champions in their respective disciplines after winning gold medals last year in Mutare.
Speaking during the official opening of the games in Mashonaland West, the Minister of Sports and Reaction Makhosini Hlongwane hailed the youth games for producing great products like boxing champion Charles Manyuchi.
“Youth games have contributed to the development of stars in the country. Our boxing champion Charles Manyuchi was identified through this programme and today has risen to be a star,” said Hlongwane.news

Village head in sex for food storm

0

Memory Rasa

GUTU – Residents of Mukadziwasha village near Mpandawana town are asking for the immediate removal of Mukadziwasha village head, Willy Mukadziwasha, alleging that his aides  demands sexual favours in exchange for drought relief aid and imposing unreasonable fines on offenders.
Masvingo Provincial Coordinator in the social welfare ministry, Ngoni Jakaza promised to look into the case and said that the ministry encounters such acts daily and urged people to report such cases.
“We are receiving several reports of these village heads doing the Vharazipi stye and we are encouraging every citizen to report such acts, we do not tolerate such behavior because there is drought. Everyone should work with the ministry.
“People should report these acts to the DA, councilors or district Social Welfare offices. People should speak out against abuse and victimisation,” said Jakaza.
A group of disgruntled villagers from the area have already written to the Gutu District Administrator (DA) Roy Hove’s office and Chief Gutu’s court to seek for the village head’s removal.
The group accuses Mukadziwasha of corruption in the allocation of land, threatening banishment to those who disagree with him among a host of other abuses.
Tendai Makuvaza (Mai Mukadziwasha), wife to the village head’s cousin brother, is part of the group that is aggrieved with Willy’s actions.
Her husband used to be the village head until last year when Headman Gadzingo removed him from his position and replaced him with Willy.
She alleges that Willy was unprocedurally declared village head due to his corrupt relationship with Chief Gadzingo.
“Hwiri then nominated his nephew, Knowledge Mharadze, as his representative. Now it is like Sodom and Gommorah,” said Makuvaza.
Zorodzai Dzingirai, who won a reprieve from Chief Gutu’s court in January after she had was fined US$200 by Willy on accusations of improperly disposing of her piece of land, says the Chief’s aides have ordered her to leave the area threatening to burn down her home.
“When food comes, be it from Christian Care, government relief aid through social welfare and even food for work, Mharadze demands sexual favours from younger women or else they get excluded from the list of beneficiaries.
“For older women, he demands a portion of the grain and a dollar on top,” said Dzingirai.
When asked for comment, Chief Gutu’s representative, Kennias Masanganise said he received the complaints last year.
He said they had reversed the irregular appointment of Willy but the DA and Headman Gadzingo went on to reappoint him.
“We do not know if it is nepotism or just confusion because a village is supposed to stay within the area but Willy is staying in Mpandawana village instead of Mukadziwasha. We have summoned him with letter of arrest for fraud after he sold pieces of land to different people but he just does not show up. Now the villagers have written a petition to the DA’s office and we hope something will be done,” said Masanganise.
Attempts to get a comment from Willy proved fruitless by the time of going to press.news

Good morning Mboko, Mphoko whatever!

Someone told me that the second Vice President will be here, I mean in this ancient city tomorrow (Friday). The Second VP… kkk aa nemiwo morega ndichiti second, I had just forgotten he rejected that demotion.
He refused to be called second VP when sekuru Hungwe tried to call him VP number two sometime ago apo pa GZU. Ivo veMasvingo vanenharo, shuwa shuwa mungati rume rose riya with his gigantic body Second?
Ko is it true that he is very tall that he cannot fit in a normal house? Hanzi Mboko aah sorry, wanted to say Mphoko lives in a hotel because he can’t fit in any house in Zimbabwe…even if you build a multi-million dollar house, Mboko would still say handidi , haiite imba iyoyo and he goes to a hotel. Inga vamwe zvenyu makagarika, kunonzi kudya nyika rutivi, when your government fails to pay its workers, you have the guts to abuse public funds like that.
We welcome you here in Masvingo Mboko but you must know that no one is happy about your behaviour. Your arrogance exposes you as a selfish person who is not a leader, a person who does not have people at heart.
Ini Mapombi ndokuudza chokwadi chausingadi kunzwa… you are just serving as VP because the one who appointed you views you as a place holder…hapana, just ceremonial uchingodya mari yenyika living in hotels.
Nemiwo ve city council, why would you invite this arrogant man to officiate at this ceremony…apa ndopandinoti chero mbuya Mahofa vaive nani. Kkkk zvatinomboitirwawo ne Zanu PF so, I can imagine mbuya vachidonha zvavo muma trenches. But ndovadii zvavo mbuya, I heard her boss vakongodonha wani gore riya… dzava hari dzofanzirofa! But on a more serious note, why did you invite Mboko zvayo, haa ini handidi zvangu, residents must unite and give him a message – if the council was getting grants from government vanhu vangadai vasingashaye mvura and other basic services. Now you invite someone who is anti –people to come and try to tell us that he cares when he believes that he is the only one who should enjoy in this country.
Shame on you Mboko! Ko vana Zvorwadza vaya vatinongohwa nembiri varipiko, this was going to be a good time to confront this man and tell him kuti people were fed up by his behaviour. Hatidi vanhu vakadai as leaders.
But God must help my nation Zimbabwe! In fact, Dofora or Dokora or whoever crafted that pledge was supposed to come up with a national prayer. Ini zvangu kuno kwaDoctor Grace I do my prayer every morning – God rescue Zimbabwe from this kind of leadership, talk of Mboko, Chimene, Mahofa and company. I shall not talk about their leader and other useless and very old place holders in government.

Kunzi garai mbuya …with her CIO body guard in that scotch cart – and Mugabe is smiling kuti zvirikufaya paMasvingo? Next time when we invite you kwedu kwaChirimudombo toda kukuisai mubhara mbuya…lol.
I am sure this country is cursed, when we survive on rotten Bananas hoping that tomorrow would bring better leaders only to be given this crop of zvihuta leaders who know nothing besides corruption, nepotism and self –enrichment.
They only become energetic when you talk of factions. Haa ukangoti Lacoste or G40 hanzi vose vanomuka kumhanya, they are just like that…never expect them to work for development.
Talking about factions, some people were saying Kasukuwere is coming to Chiredzi…bva G40 haisi kurara nhai , when are you dishing out residential stands to youth aligned to your faction.… iko mukasadaro na Hungwe hamupabudi he is a very good schemer. Mahofa defies Kasukuwere on Chimedza

0

Kudzai Matava

Gutu – Under fire Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Mahofa has taken a dig at Gutu South MP and suspended Zanu PF member Dr Paul Chimedza, labeling him a traitor despite a call by Zanu PF Political Commissar Savior Kasukuwere for unity in the party and the province.
Lately, Kasukuwere has been fervently working to secure unity ahead of the party’s annual conference to be held in Masvingo in December but it seems Mahofa is determined to see Dr Chimedza going down the political drain.
Kasukuwere’s efforts culminated in a provincial meeting held last weekend at Victoria Junior school at which party members grudgingly agreed to work together.
The attack on Dr Chimedza was made during Heroes’ Day celebrations at Maungwa business centre and it becomes the latest salvo in a long running feud and political grudge that spans at least eight years.
Mahofa reportedly instigated Dr Chimedza’s suspension in 2014 on untested allegations of belonging to the ‘Mujuru cabal’.
“Chimedza is a traitor! We all know that he is attending Zimbabwe People First’s rallies behind our backs,” said Mahofa addressing her people.
She went on to declare that people must not follow Chimedza.
“Stop listening to Chimedza’s lies that he was forgiven by the President. He must produce a letter which shows he is no longer suspended and this letter must be from the Masvingo executive. Our structures do not include Chimedza because we set them when he was suspended.”
Mahofa also told the people he will reveal his chosen person whom the people must vote for in the party primaries in preparation for the 2018 elections, confirming rumours that she was plotting to remove Chimedza at all costs.
The attack is also likely to complicate Zanu PF recent manoeuvres to secure a truce in a province ripped apart by factional battles in which the two are said to be on different sides.
A sworn enemy of Dr Chimedza, Mahofa has found the youthful MP a thorn in her flesh since 2008 when he tried to contest against her in the party primaries for the Gutu South constituency candidature in the general elections held that year.
Mahofa subsequently prevailed against Dr Chimedza after she was allegedly imposed on an electorate that had become fed-up with her unimpressive tenure as the area’s long-time MP.
Mahofa, however, went on to lose the seat to MDC’s Eliphas Mukonoweshuro, her first defeat in an area she had represented since 1985.
The defeat, Zanu PF’s first loss in the constituency since 1980, reportedly stung Mahofa so much that she blamed it on Dr Chimedza’s treachery.
After the defeat she also reportedly swore to Gutu South villagers that she would make sure that nothing developmental gets done in their area.
It seems she has managed to live up to her word though, with Dr Chimedza blaming her for scuttling a number of projects that he initiated; an electrification programme of all schools in ward 28 and a state-of-the-art solar-powered clinic in the same ward.news

Masvingo remembers Chimbetu in style

0

Itai Muzondo

Masvingo – The city of Masvingo was this year honored as the place to kick-start the annually-held Simon Chimbetu commemoration gigs with the first show being held last Saturday at Liquids Bar International.
Sulumani ‘Sulu’ Chimbetu, who is the late music guru’s oldest son, graced the commemorations in style asking revellers to write their favourite ‘Dendera Songs’ (as Chimbetu’s music brand is affectionately known), on pieces of papers which he would instantly play on live band.
Revellers said it was a great honour that the commemorations for this year began in Masvingo, breaking with the tradition of kick-starting the commemorations in Harare.
“I am glad that Sulu remembered that his father had equally important fans across the nation and honoured Masvingo by choosing it as the launching ground. He should do the same for other cities in the coming years. Above all, this has served us travelling costs which we would have incurred going to Harare to celebrate Simon’s life,” said a fan who attended the gig.
August 14, 2016 marked 12 years since Chimbetu passed on.
Fans were thrilled when Sulu sampled some of his interesting songs on his forthcoming album among them ‘Tinoda Runyaro’.
The song makes a plea with authorities to ‘think first’ and shun ‘jumping into violent actions’ when facing law and order maintenance challenges.
There were strong indications though that the album will be a critique of the current state of affairs in Zimbabwe.
The ‘Batai Munhu’ hit maker, however, shied away from disclosing the release date of the album.
“We are not far from releasing our next album. To our fans, just stay abreast for more entertaining Dendera music. We are coming on with a very album,” Sulu said.
Meanwhile, popular hits by the late Sungura veteran which include ‘Haina Window’, ‘Dzandipedza Mafuta’, ‘One Way’ and ‘Ndarangira Gamba’ kept the audience afoot throughout the chilly night.entertainment

PSMI employees yet to receive March salaries

0

Itai Muzondo

MASVINGO – Premier Service Medical Investment (PSMI) employees are lamenting a six month salary dry spell, saying they last received salaries in February 2016.
The medical insurer’s employees who opened up to the TellZim News this week said they were finding it hard to put food on the table but are staying put because, they do not have any immediate alternatives should they leave their jobs.
Despite what they see as very little light at the end of the dark tunnel, the workers have remained hopeful that management would soon find a lasting solution to the problem which is linked to the broader economic climate in the whole country.
“We have not received anything from our company since February this year. We are struggling to make ends meet since the beginning of the year and no formal communication has been made to us on when we can expect our back-dated salaries,” one employee said.
“We are just holding on to our offices because we have no option but we are surely running out of morale. If there could be an option to sign up with a new company which gives me the little I deserve, I would leave PSMI immediately but as for now, we just pin our hopes on management,” another employee said.
PSMI Salaries Manager England Pelhams refused to comment on the issue.
“Who gave you my number and who told you about such issues? Did that person say I am answerable to that? I do not know you and I cannot help you in getting in touch with responsible authorities, try other channels to get the comment,” said Pelhams.
PSMI Business Development and Customer Relations Manager, Nhamo Marandu, was not available for comment by time of going to print.news

Intended for 9 000 residents, Chiredzi’s sewer pipes now cater for 55 000

0

Increase Gumbo

Chiredzi – Stagnation and total neglect of Chiredzi basic infrastructure over the decades has seen the town’s miniscule sewer infrastructure getting overloaded to breaking point, with a continuously growing population not being balanced with equal infrastructural upgrades, TellZim News can reveal.
The previous census indicates Chiredzi has 35 000 people but recent estimates put the population at 55 000 yet the town’s sewerage capacity was meant for a population of only 9 000.
Speaking during an engagement meeting which was facilitated by the Zimbabwe Liberators Platform (ZLP) and attended by residents and council personnel, residents of Tshovani said most of the sewer bursts have resulted in pools of stagnant sewer water.
These, the residents say, are an excellent breeding ground for mosquitoes in the town.
Chiredzi Town Council (CTC) secretary, Charles Muchatukwa confirmed the gravity of the situation and said council was working on rectifying the problem.
“It’s unfortunate that those pipes are old since they were commissioned in 1964 and they were meant for a population of only 9 000 people which was the population of the town by then.
Now the population has shot to almost 55 000, something which has led to continuous bursts of the sewerage pipes. We are working on that,” Muchatukwa said.
The town’s surging population is attributable to steady migration as people seek to make a living in the sugar industry; the country’s only industry which is still operating at 100 percent capacity and more.
The population growth has, however, come with dire consequences for the small town which now has to deal with countless sewer bursts and other infrastructural deficiencies on a very weak revenue base.
The sewer line from West road to Mugandani in Tshovani has for a long time been an eyesore to residents and a headache to council due to frequent bursts.
Town Council engineer, Wesley Kauma said council is mobilising funds to the tune of US$1 million which will be channelled towards the upgrading of the sewer pipe.
The country’s sewer and water infrastructure was put up by successive colonial governments and virtually nothing has been done to rehabilitate the systems for the past 36 years.news

Stop politicising development: Chakona

0

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Paradzai Chakona, the Zaka Central legislator, has urged the people of Jerera not to look at development through political lenses, saying differences in political affiliation must not be allowed to stifle progress in communities.
Chakona was addressing a poorly attended meeting held in Jerera last week to clear the air on a contentious electrification programme for Garikai suburb in Jerera.
Some residents stayed away from the meeting, thinking it would be used by the MP to score cheap political points.
Many residents of the suburb do not have electricity in their homes and some had been speculating that their MP was abusing the electrification programme and was blocking progress for political gain.
There was also confusion on whether they were supposed to pay for the hired contractor to get connected or wait for Rural Electrification Agency (REA) programme spearheaded by Chakona.
The MP encouraged residents to use their resources to get electricity connection if they can afford but also made commitments to help those who cannot afford the connection fees.
Chakona denied speculations that he was blocking development saying he was committed to uplifting his constituency by complementing developmental programmes initiated by the people.
“Though some people hijacked the programme I had started, I do not want to block those who formed groups and hired the contractor but I want to develop this area so I will go ahead with it and help those who can’t pay,” said Chakona.
The legislator implored people not to associate developmental programmes with politics but just embrace development regardless of its origins saying people had boycotted the meeting thinking it was a Zanu PF affair.
“Leave politics to politicians and focus on developing your area. If I come here and say I want to sponsor Zaka FC, I will not bring it as a Zanu PF programme,” he said.
He rebuked the leadership of his own political party for doing slogans during meeting on developmental programmes saying the habit was offensive to people of other political convictions, a situation that negatively affects development.
“Neither Zanu PF nor MDC will come and build a house or cook sadza for you at your home. When doing developmental projects, lets come together despite our political differences,” said Chakona
Zaka assistant District Administrator Victor Zinanga who was also present urged people to unite and develop their area.news

Government looks aside as ‘nation goes mad’

0

Moses Ziyambi

MASVINGO – Authorities in Masvingo, and indeed the rest of the country, are turning a blind eye on the spike of mentally challenged people on the streets although the situation has reached crisis level that requires urgent intervention.
In Masvingo, there has been a shocking increase in the number of people with mental health challenges, making it difficult to cross any street at any given time of the day without meeting a person or two with mental disabilities.
Despite the glaring gravity of the situation, authorities seem indifferent although homeless mentally-challenged people are among the most vulnerable people with females being even less safe as they are exposed to perverted sexual abuse.
In their daily forage for food in the dust bins, these people leave a trail of litter as they remove the rubbish from the bins thereby undoing the city’s efforts to maintain cleaner streets.
With the worsening economy, the problem is getting out of hand as street children and vagrants continue to settle on the pavements.
Earlier this year, government released data showing that there are 91 390 mentally ill patients in Zimbabwe.
Health minister Dr David Parirenyatwa attributed the problem to economic distress and lack of counselling services to most people who need them.
Traditional belief systems are still intact though, and many people are convinced that mental abnormalities are a result of witchcraft; usually bad spells cast upon somebody by jealousy relatives.
When asked what was being done to rehabilitate the mentally ill people on the streets, City of Masvingo, through the housing department, said they were aware of the problem but could not do anything due to bureaucracy.
The city cited the Health Act which purportedly authorises only the police to round up the people and a magistrate to authorise their rehabilitation.
“We are not allowed to just pick them from the streets. Our duty is simply to make government aware that such people exist and leave it there. It is the government’s duty to see what to do with those persons,” council said in a statement.
Masvingo District Administrator (DA) Makepeace Muzenda said the situation was worrying and promised to take up the matter with her superiors.
“There are some religious organisations that are showing a commitment to help those people but we need more intervention. I am going to take up the matter with higher office so that we can find out how we can solve the problem,” said Muzenda.
There are only two institutions that take care of people with mental health challenges; the government-run Ngomahuru and Zimcare Trust’s Ratidzo School.
Ngomahuru, situated around 50km to the south of the city, has lately been described as a forgotten human dumpsite owing to the deplorable conditions there.
While conditions at Ratidzo School are more humane, the institution caters only for children, and is by no means, in a position to absorb all people with mental disorders.
In a society where government services and capacity have virtually collapsed at all levels, public expectation and hope has naturally shifted towards civic society and Christian organisations for leadership.
Despite the proliferation of private voluntary organisations and churches and their active leadership in other areas of deficit such as welfare for orphaned school children, they seem to be shying away from embracing the challenge of dealing with the mentally-handicapped, probably for the obvious emotional and economic costs involved.
Outrageous government bureaucracy, inherent in all facets of official conduct, can also frustrate and cripple even the most well-meant of intentions.
“The blame lies squarely on government’s doorstep. They created the economic problems that are traumatising people to insanity and are ignoring the victims. As Christians, we are depressed by the situation of these vulnerable people and we are praying for them but we are also affected by the same economic rot,” said a local cleric, Rev Tapfumaneyi Zenda.news

Cost of new Gutu flea market questioned

0

Kennedy Murwira

GUTU – Residents of Mpandawana and stall holders of the new flea market which was opened at the beginning of this year have questioned the costs of putting up the market as has been made public by the town, saying they suspect the costs are being inflated.
The stall holders are arguing that the costs that are being paraded are not commensurate with the quality of material that was used to construct the market.
Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, traders said they are strongly convinced that the town board was deliberately inflating the costs to cover up their corruption tracks.
“We were surprised to hear that the construction costs of this market stood at $80 000 yet only diamond mesh wire, treated poles and zinc roofing sheets were used during construction.
“Even if we are to add the cost of cement and the paint that was splashed on the roofing sheets, the cost would never get to $80 000,” one trader said.
The traders also complained that the rentals were too high as business was low and most of them were finding it difficult to make the monthly payments.
“We are expected to fork out $30 every month yet we can hardly afford it as business volumes are low in view of the current economic hardships in the country.
Gutu United Residents and Ratepayers Association (Gurra) chairman, Lloyd Mufudze, said councillors who were elected to represent the people were not doing their work as they were misrepresenting facts about the costs.
“Even a layman who is not a quantity surveyor can see that the people are being taken for a ride here. By simply looking at the flea market you can deduce that the construction costs have been highly inflated.
“It is time that council stopped taking the people for granted and give them information that is accurate,” Mufudze said.
Gutu Rural Diistrict Council Chief Executive Officer, Alexander Mtembwa, was not available for comment while new Mpandawana Town Board chairman, Gabriel Mapepa, said he was not privy to how the costs were estimated.
Corruption in most town council has seen local government minister, Savior Kasukuwere taking a heavy stand, with some senior council officials in Chiredzi, Zvishavane and Gweru being in the firing line.news
