Masvingo – The provincial team to the youth games has declared its determination to win the on-going 14th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games after spending a week in camp in preparation for the games which are being held in Chinhoyi.
Team Masvingo trooped into camp at Victoria High School last week on Monday and spent the whole week preparing for the games which will end on Sunday.
Masvingo, which has fielded over 168 participants, hopes to surpass last year’s performance in Mutare where they finished at fourth position in after managing to go with an a relatively small18 member team to represent the province.
Masvingo’s Technical Manager, Titus Madzingo said this year’s team will bring good results given the availability of resources which enabled a proper selection of the best team.
“This time we are much prepared for these games, we had enough resources to select the best team from our province.
“In athletics, we have participants who took part in the just ended Confederation of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) games,” said Madzingo.
The province’s girls handball and boys boxing teams will go in as defending champions in their respective disciplines after winning gold medals last year in Mutare.
Speaking during the official opening of the games in Mashonaland West, the Minister of Sports and Reaction Makhosini Hlongwane hailed the youth games for producing great products like boxing champion Charles Manyuchi.
“Youth games have contributed to the development of stars in the country. Our boxing champion Charles Manyuchi was identified through this programme and today has risen to be a star,” said Hlongwane.news
