FC Wangu Mazodze has rehired George Magariro as their head coach, replacing John Nyikadzino who had taken over the reins after Magariro’s left the club.

Magariro will be at the helm of the club during the 2025 Eastern Region Soccer League Division One season.

He served FC Wangu Mazodze in the 2023 Division One season and was hired again to coach for Mazodze which failed to qualify for the Premier Soccer League in 2024 with hopes that he will take the team to greater heights.

FC Wangu Mazodze spokesperson, Blessing Kwesha confirmed the development to TellZim News and said the team reappointed Magariro after Nyikadzino failed to renew his contract.

“We have reappointed Magariro as the new head coach replacing Nyikadzino who did not sign to be part of the team this season so we parted ways in an amicable way.

“It was easy to take Magariro back since he left the team in good fortune which is a lesson to all other coaches out there that football goes round and round so it’s good to keep those relations when moving to other teams,” said Kwesha.

Kwesha said Magariro was a suitable coach expressing confidence in him to take the team to the next level.

“Our target is nothing short of Premier Soccer League (PSL). Magariro is someone who knows what we want as a club, that is a PSL promotion and trials are underway so that he chooses the best players that he wants to work with that will give best results,” said Kwesha.

Kwesha added that fans, sponsors and stakeholders welcomed Magariro with new hope though some still had doubts.

“Our fans were happy to have Magariro back, we had an event at Mucheke hall where we unveiled the coach with the belief that he still has unfinished business in the club to deliver best football though some of our supporters still have doubts. I want to assure them that the club is in safe hands.

“Our sponsors are not sure if we made a right decision but I want to give them assurance that we are in the right direction since we started three seasons ago. At first we finished the season at number seven followed by number three and last season at number two, which means this time is our time,” said Kwesha.

Magariro, who previously played for the Zimbabwe national team, Dynamos and Masvingo United FC (Una Una) coached FC Wangu Mazodze and went to Una Una, which led to some of the players from Mazodze joining him at Masvingo United FC.

FC Wangu Mazodze has already begun the next season’s preparations as trials were run from January 13-19, 2025 with hopes to create a strong team and also get new players who will assist the team in getting the PSL promotion which they have a history of losing chances during the final matches.

Mazodze lost the promotion into PSL after drawing with Renco Mine FC on the final match and last season (2023) they lost the promotion on goal difference to Triangle FC.
