10 March 2017, MUTARE – For the second time in a row, Mutare Central were crowned overall champions after a sterling performance in the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Officer Commanding Manicaland Province games which saw them scooping seven gold medals in the two day tournament held at Mutare Boys High School.
The annually-held tournament, which comprises various sporting disciplines, saw Mutare Central dominating women’s table tennis, men’s chess, athletics, women soccer, men’s volleyball, powerlifting and body building.
Provincial Headquarters (PHQ) finished on second position with two gold medals, three silver medals. Rusape managed number three after a hard fight which saw them also getting two gold medals.
The Criminal Investigative Department (CID) soccer team walked away with the soccer trophy after beating Rusape by two goals to nil.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the tournament’s guest speaker; Officer Commanding Manicaland Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Isaac Tayengwa commented the good sportsmanship among members of the police force.
He urged the winners to start preparing for the ZRP Commissioner General Sports Gala slated for April this year in Harare.
“A tremendous spirit of friendship has clearly been demonstrated throughout the games. The exemplary way by which rivals competed against each other has helped to promote the spirit of solidarity.
“There are some who have been selected to get into camp in preparation of the forth coming Commissioner General Sports Gala, I urge you all to get into the serious business of training very hard,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner Tayengwa.sport
