Zanu PF Youth leader Mandebvu trial finally begins

By Perpetua Murungweni

The trial of Zanu PF Masvingo Youth Chairperson Delight Mandebvu, in which he is being accused of assaulting former Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke in March this year has finally commenced, with Mandebvu recently appearing before Masvingo Magistrate Franklin Mukwananzi.
Mandebvu’s defense lawyer Tatenda Fredy Chimbadzwa however lobbied for postponement of the trial, accusing the court of forcing him to commence with the trial while he was not served with relevant documents regarding the case which he said he had not yet received.
“There are several court papers that are missing which include the witness statement of one Aaron Chidhanguro, the medical reports, the charge sheet, outline of the State’s case and the docket. Communication concerning these documents was made and the state was present on the day of request.
“These documents were not served to the defense counsel and it is only today during court that I am told that these papers were reverted to the police and no reasons have been given as to why the documents were sent back to the police. I am told that the court is proceeding with the trial even though the accused’s papers are yet to be served to me,” said Chimbadzwa.
Chimbadzwa said it was not fair to commence with the trial while he was not given a chance to inspect his client’s papers.
“I was not given a chance to inspect the accused papers and confirm if the papers are still the same. The defense does not know if the papers are still the same and what they contain.
“The defense cannot be dragged to commence the trial in the absence of these documents, while it is clear that it is the state’s fault that these documents have not been served to me,” said Chimbadzwa.
The state led by prosecutor Godknows Mugondo dismissed the defense’s claim and said the papers had been served to the accused person and the accused person signed an affidavit as acknowledgment of receipt.
“The accused person was served with the court papers and signed an affidavit acknowledging receipt on April 30, 2024 and this is evidence that the accused received all these mentioned to be missing documents. The claim that the papers are missing is not true,” said Mugondo.
Mugondo also said the case was long overdue and it was because of the accused lack of cooperation.
“The trial has been long overdue because on May 8, the date that was set for the trial, the accused person and his defense lawyer excused themselves from trial and it was postponed to May 21.
“On May 21 the accused person appeared alone without his defense lawyer and pleaded with the court to postpone trial claiming that he was sick and produced medical documents from a doctor. The trial was postponed again to May 28 when the accused did not show up and from that time the court did not hear nor see the accused person in court.
“The court later found out from the media that the accused person was in South Africa conducting an election campaign, and during this time one Mr Mugabe from Harare sent us a letter saying that he would come to court on behalf of the accused person because the accused person was in South Africa on State duty,” said Mugondo.
Mugondo said the court should proceed with trial because the accused was served with the documents and had full knowledge that the trial was today.
“The accused then came in my absence for a default inquiry with my fellow prosecutor who had no knowledge of the case and the trial was postponed to today, July 2. The accused and his lawyer had full knowledge that the matter was coming for trial today and there is no excuse for the trial not commence today.
“The accused person was served with all the papers as required by the criminal act; the accused person seems to be playing delaying games from the onset,” said Mugondo.
The magistrate dismissed the defense’s plea of postponement and proceeded with the trial which he then deferred to July 8 for sentencing
It is a state’s case that on March 2, 2024 Mandebvu assaulted former Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke and his wife after the latter’s car side-swapped the vehicle the ruling party youth leader was traveling in along the Masvingo-Nyika road.
In May, Mandebvu, went on to file attempted murder charges alleging he was hit by Maboke’s vehicle, not by any other vehicle as had been reported.

Gweru Man boards lift to Chivhu, wakes up in Beitbridge 4 days later

Police in Gweru are investigating a case of robbery in which a man from Gweru boarded a lift to Chivhu got robbed along the way and woke up dumped in Beitbridge on June 23, four days later.
Circumstances are that on June 19 at around 1600 hours, Tamayi Tabaziva boarded an unregistered Nissan Note motor vehicle at Gweru Show-Grounds intending to go to Chivhu.
The vehicle was being driven by a male adult and had two other male occupants on board and Tabaziva sat on the front passenger’s seat.
Upon reaching the 10km peg along Mvuma road, one of the men produced a knife and ordered Tabaziva to remain calm. The other one sprayed him with an unknown substance on the face and he fell unconscious.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.
“We confirm a case of robbery in which a man intending to go to Chivhu was robbed and dumped in Beitbridge losing his two cell phones and cash amounting to US$365 and investigations are ongoing,” said Mahoko.
On June 23, at around 1700 hours, he gained consciousness and realised that he was in Beitbridge with nothing on him and had bruises all over suggesting that he could have been assaulted.
He had been robbed of US$365 and two cellphones, a Huawei and K-Gtel and was assisted with transport by well-wishers to Gweru where he reported the matter on June 25.
In yet another robbery incident, a lady manning a money transfer kiosk at Mkoba 6 Shopping Centre, Gweru was robbed of airtime worth US$60 after a client she was serving broke into the tuck-shop.
All the stolen airtime was recovered after the suspect gave chase and apprehended him before handing him over to the police.
It is alleged that on June 25 at around 1100 hours, Ruth Manhivi was at the kiosk when 24 year old Russell Marongere from Mkoba 3 came and made an Ecocash cash out transaction of US$7.
Manhivi bent down to take money from a cashbox and during the process Marongere allegedly entered the kiosk through the door which was unlocked and sprayed an unknown substance on her face.
Marongere took 8 x USD$5 Netone and 4 x USD$5 Buddie airtime top-up cards all valued at US$60 and ran away. The complainant screamed for help and some alert members of the public pursued the man and apprehended him leading to the recovery of all the stolen airtime.
Marongere has since appeared in court, and was remanded in custody to July 10 for continuation of trial.

Minister Masuka clueless as. . .

Tokwe Mukosi lies idle 7yrs after completion

…5 districts can directly benefit from irrigation

…Only Tongaatt Huletts using the water

By Beverly Bizeki

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government seems clueless about how to fulfill the former President Robert Mugabe’s vision of turning the Lowveld into a greenbelt following the completion of Tugwi-Mukosi dam a decade ago as the biggest inland dam in the country is fast becoming a white elephant, with the responsible minister reluctant to establish irrigation schemes downstream.
Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Anxious Masuka, who has been at the helm of the ministry for over five years now, seems clueless as the dam has seen neither irrigation nor tourism development save for irrigating the Lowveld Sugar Estates despite ravaging impacts of climate change and the El Nino-induced drought.
Mnangagwa has since extended a US$2 billion begging bowl to the world following the El Nino-induced drought yet Tugwi-Mukosi dam can irrigate about 40 000 hectares and provide enough food for people.
Former Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Chivi South, Killer Zivhu blamed the leadership of gross incompetence and misplaced priorities on the delay in utilisation of the vast water bodies in the province.
“Chivi District in Masvingo Province is one of the most drought prone districts in the province despite the availability of water for irrigation in the district. I think we have a leadership problem because if the leaders were putting in the exact effort they are placing kumakomba (pfumvudza/intwasa) in irrigation development the country could be better in terms of food security.
“I don’t know why they cannot replicate what was done at Mushandike Irrigation Scheme in other areas especially here in Chivi District. Masvingo province has about 60 percent of the water in the country yet it is in this province where we have some of the worst drought hit areas,” said Zivhu.
Zivhu further bemoaned the situation at Tugwi Mukosi saying it had yielded no benefits for people affected by construction of the dam and people were starting to lose confidence in the government.
“People from the areas around Tugwi Mukosi were moved to Chingwizi where they are living in abject poverty and were promised numerous benefits from the dam construction but still have nothing to show for it. They left their belongings including their relatives’ graves in the water for nothing.
“People no longer believe in government because there is really nothing for them from these forced relocations in the name of paving way for development. Those at Chisase are enjoying benefits from Manyuchi dam why can’t the same be done here in Chivi.
“We have been in council where continuous planning about utilising the dam was done but nothing came to fruition as it is all about planning about tourism with nothing done, mari inoperera kumaworkshop (the money is spend on workshops) because its workshop after workshop, people could benefit from village tourism, tourists that come here would definitely want to enjoy a rural life experience because there is nothing new they can get from hotel experiences as these are available in abundance where they come from but even if they were to come there are no toilets, they will have to urinate in the water.
“This is a wakeup call for the leadership. They know where to find minerals but they do not talk about investing in the water bodies in the province,’ said Zivhu.

Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri said resource constraints were delaying progress at the dam and said as soon as resources were availed government would work on irrigation development, notwithstanding that government splashed almost US$90 million on Presidential goat scheme. It seems its misplaced priorities because the US$87 million could have gone a long way in establishing irrigation schemes at Tugwi Mukosi dam.
“It is a matter of resources. The dam has the capacity to irrigate 40 000ha at peak. Water conveyancing for that purpose remains a major cost. However with the renewed thrust on irrigation development using our water bodies at the moment, we should see some work start on irrigation establishment at Tugwi Mukosi and surroundings,” said Prof Jiri.
Jiri said government was still working on securing finance for irrigation development at the dam through private sector partnerships.
“The Ministry is having a conference where the President will be the guest of honour to drive the thrust on Zimbabwe irrigation investment. We need the private sector to chip in and finance,” said Prof Jiri.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa, however, said utilisation of the dam for irrigation development was being stalled by launch of the Tugwi Mukosi Master Plan. He tried to defend government saying the dam was not lying idle because it is facilitating fishing cooperatives and irrigating sugarcane plantations.
“The vagaries of weather compromise our farming activities in Masvingo Province. This is exacerbated by the fact that we are predominantly agro-ecological region four and five which is characterised by low rainfall. Indeed Tugwi Mukosi Dam could be the panacea to drought induced challenges. The Government of Zimbabwe should be applauded for the Tugwi Mukosi Dam Project,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa.
He, however, failed to explicitly explain why government should be applauded for having the dam lying idle for close to a decade now yet thousands of people downstream are starving.
Dr Pazvakavambwa instead said everything was now in place and they were waiting for the launch of the Tugwi Mukosi Master Plan, meaning no meaningful development will be seen until they organize a function so that Mnangagwa can cut some ribbon.
“What has been outstanding was the Tugwi Mukosi Master Plan. This has been done and awaits launching and this has potential to unlock investments. I am sure it can be done anytime from now. However, the dam is not lying idle since it is supplying the sugarcane plantations in the Lowveld. There are also over ten fishing cooperatives operating in the dam,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa.
Local experts told TellZim News that setting up an irrigation system ranges from US$6 000 to US$9 000 per hectare that would mean an average of US$120 000 to US$180 000 for a 20 hectare scheme.
This means that Tugwi Mukosi irrigations scheme requires between US$240 – US$360 Million to set up and the amount could easily be raised considering the government is on record spending millions on corruption scandals like the US$87 million presidential goat scheme.
Chivi Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer Tariro Matavire said at local authority level nothing had been planned yet as their plan as a local authority would be guided by the yet to be launched Master Plan.
“So far there is nothing that we have planned as awe are waiting for approval of the Master Plan thereafter we can come up with the local development plan guided by the Master plan,” said Matavire.
Other experts who have spoken to this publication have also revealed that with all conditions set for a good harvest under irrigation an average yield of seven tonnes can be anticipated from one hectare of maize. This translates to 47 000 tonnes of maize crop that can be harvested at one go when the dam is used at its full capacity for irrigation.
As if to mock responsible authorities on irrigation development, the dam has a capacity to irrigate 40 000 ha yet the province has 69 637ha under irrigation while 65 403 are for the sugar estates which means the province only has about 4 234ha under irrigation for other crops; an embarrassing 10 percent of the dam’s capability.
Chivi District which hosts the other share of the dam, only had six functional communal irrigation schemes with a total of 272ha despite its great irrigation potential considering the availability of Muzhwi Dam in the district.
The government of Zimbabwe has been accused of having misplaced priorities with government projecting construction of yet another big dam bigger than Tugwi-Mukosi, Tende Runde which is expected to have a capacity of irrigating more than 35 000ha.
The government is targeting to export water from the dam to South Africa when it’s completed.
Government has been talking about making the province an irrigation hub with the greenbelt expected to major in the production of citrus, sugar and maize.

Bye-bye ED bye-bye; 2030 ED anenge asiko!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mapombi is amazed by how fast things are moving. It reminds me of this movie called Fast and Furious – I know most of you might not have gotten chance to watch it because of the persistent power cuts but haaa movie yakapenga iyoyo. The way things are happening in Zimbabwe ka I can easily relate to this movie- it’s fast and furious!
I will quickly take you through some of the events to where we are now. Mapombi is pretty sure that you have heard about the Chivhayo issue where he claimed that he captured ED kuti dzvii. The claim caused a lot of tension within the rank and file, cdes, with some vachitosheedzera kuti ngaende ngaende naChivhayo wake. After that we witnessed Mpofu and Chimombe being punished, right? Do you think they are behind bars because of corruption? Kkkkkk forget it- the truth is they are there because they exposed kuti Chivhayo akabata chinhu kuti dzvii. How can they expose kuti ari mukati kati mechinhu akachibata kuti dzvii? Clearly that was exposing ED so they have to face the music.
Mapombi also want to tell another reason why vana Chimombe vari pashinyasi kkkkkk lower your ears cdes – im told they were given tender to buy chemicals to spray and kill birds so that wheat raMudhara haridyiwe, and guess what they did? Vakomana vakatenga mushonga mushoma shoma and mixed with of lots water and then sprayed. Kkkkkkk and the birds did not die at all kkkkk hanzi dzakaramba kufa apa dzanga dzava kudya wheat zvekuti and Mudhara vakatsamwa rough kkkkk.
Anyways, did you hear the unfortunate events that happened at deputy minister Kuda Mnangagwa’s Borrowdale House? The house caught fire under mysterious circumstances, and Mapombi heard that Kuda akawana apaDoor repa bedroom pakaiswa some live bullets. Yes, live bullets at the bedroom door. Isn’t that scary cdes, kkkkk but the script seems familiar handiti?
The next event was the Army Commander Sanyatwe bragging that Zanu PF will rule forever. Zanu PF will rule forever and those who want to disturb or stop it will be sidelined. Most people think that Sanyatwe was referring to the opposition but haaa Mapombi can tell you that the message was directed to a faction within Zanu PF and that faction is aligned to ED. Mind you ED is not Zanu PF so the liberation party will rule forever even without ED.
Mapombi suspects a lot of events happened in the past few days which led ED to announce that he is serving his last term when he addressed people in Manicaland. Hanzi naED ndava kuenda this is my last term and I’m stepping down at the next Zanu PF congress to pave way for the next leader kkkkkk munoti zviri zvega imi? The Army had spoken kkkk.
I know you will say Mapombi anotaurisa but uummmm hazvisi zvega izvi. The way the slogan 2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo vachitonga was being chanted so ka ED aripo achitogutsirira musoro and the sudden change of events haaa zvinondirangaridza November 2017 izvi. A lot has happened behind the scenes and probably ED was forced to say what he said in Manicaland kuti I’m stepping down at the next congress to pave way for a new leader.
Now that ED himself announced that he is stepping down at the nest congress toda kunzwa kuti vana Owen Mudha Ncube vachati kudii manje kkkkkk Mapombi akambozvitaura kuti dzungu hakusi kungwara. And Masvingo province dzungu munoriwanzawo too much.
But very soon we are likely to see more than one centre of power as party supporters try to align and dear themselves with the one whom they think will take over from ED. Obviously Chiwenga is the best foot forward, and I’m sure the army is rallying behind him. Kembo Mohadi might want to try his luck as well but haaaa Mr I can’t has some sex scandals plus health wise zvavakurema. There might be new names emerging – Mapombi has heard about Tagwirei, Kasukuwere and of course the silent PV, YES Valerio Sibanda is also in the equation and many others.
Anyways, for now let mapombi not worry about who is likely to replace ED, instead let me celebrate kuti vava kuenda kuKwekwe manje manje kundorima because he failed dismally to solve the economic crisis. In fact corruption increased during his term, many opposition supporters were arrested during his term, inflation and many other vices. There is very little to write home about his term and many would want to quickly forget about his term save for those who surrounded him.
If Morgan Tsvangirai was still alive (MHSRIP), we would wave our open palms in the air tichiti; ‘Bye-bye ED bye-bye; bye-bye Mnangagwa bye-bye, bye-bye ED bye-bye’. I miss Morgan – the finest politician of our time. Yes, he is my hero. He stabilized the economy during the inclusive government. Many people managed to buy cars, built houses and started businesses during the inclusive government period all thanks to Tsvangirai.
Zanu PF had failed in 2008; there was no economy to talk about; no food in shops, no currency, no everything. Nyika yakanga yaparara chaiko but Tsvangirai changed things in no time and everyone remembers the good memories. ED failed and we are looking forward to the next leader – chero vakatonga for life Mapombi handimbokendenga as long as leaders achichinja kuchimbouyawo vamwe probably one day we will find someone who will stabilize the economy.
It’s lunch time guys let me go ndindokanga zvangu Maputi angu for lunch. These days the weather is chilling so bananas haawore zvekumhanya saka ndotongoita zvemaputi iwaya. But I never thought a learned woman like me would live as a destitute like this. My parents sent me to school but the Zanu PF corruption and maladministration ndiyo yakandisvitsa pandiri apa. I never thought I will survive on rotten bananas and maputi like this – better aende hake timboedza Chiwenga iyeye kana zvaramba toiedzazve Valerio Sibanda tichingodaro ko handiti Sanyatwe wakati ichatonga for life. After PV iye Sanyatwe will be in line kkkk.
I think Sanyatwe needs to know that tinotodawo kutongwa neZanu isu vana Mapombi, takafa kare because we gave up on life Mugabe achiri mupenyu. We have seen vana Nyikayaramba vachingotaura same language seiyoyi but vakangofa vakatisiya tichingotongwa neZanu yacho so we don’t care much about that. Ndimi mungatourayana muchirwira zvigaro and as for me as long as I get maputi and some rotten bananas manake. I don’t have and I can’t afford to but even a pant but I don’t care. I died for this country long ago.
Before I go, let me chant the slogan one more time – ‘Bye-bye ED bye-bye, bye-bye Mnangagwa bye-bye kkkkk zvakanotonakidza kaSlogan kacho. Anyways those aligned to ED chidyai kekupedzesera tigouyawo isu vaGenerari Kedha kkkkkkk. Anenge aonawo WC muti hanzi chibai kekupedzisira baba vachipo kkkk. Ko Mphoko ke, where is he? Mboko Imboko!!!

Are Trade Unions doing good or harm the efficient running of business in Zimbabwe?

0

By Shadreck Zangairai

Moreover, trade unions have been too exaggerating in terms of the salary to workers in general. This does not depict that they serve for the employees’ interests wholeheartedly. It is widely understood that unions raise the cost of labour by raising members’ wages above market rates. Union leaders are the main beneficiaries since they strive for political advancement. Of particular reference is the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) which later formed the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). The formation of the MDC in 1999, marked a new era in industrial relations, with the government accusing the ZCTU of negating its constituency, the workers, in pursuit of political gain. The ZCTU-MDC intimacy was seen as a replica of Zambia’s Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), which through the leadership of former trade unionist dislodged the country’s founding president from power. In response, the government took a proactive role in the formation of a rival union, the Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions (ZFTU) which had the backing of the War Veterans Association. However, instead of bringing remedy and solution to the ailing economy, the war veterans invaded factories on the pretext of trying to assist workers who were being retrenched willy-nilly and underpaid. This brought turmoil, lawlessness and confusion in the workplace.
In the early post independent years, Zimbabwean trade unions, were an important driving force of the anti-colonial liberation struggle. This was short-lived as they transformed into transmission belts of the ruling party, as was the trend in most African countries. As a reward for giving up fundamental freedoms they were offered a secured status, secure jobs for their members and privileges for their leaders. However, with the passage of time, and as a result of debt crisis and the ensuing economic liberalization, there was massive job losses in the formal economy and a strong decline in union membership. This was worsened by the fact that the government started to reform labour laws to the disadvantage of workers.
The early 1990s to mid-1990s saw the introduction of ESAP after the discarding of socialism. Among others principles, the policy of ESAP called for public enterprise reforms, budget deficit reduction, trade liberalisation, devaluation of the local currency, fiscal and monetary policy reforms, deregulation of investment, labour and price controls, cost recovery measures in social services and ending of subsidies and the retrenchments in both the public and private sectors. This affected the economy and it resulted in many workers losing their jobs since most industries were affected, such as the textiles, clothing, engineering, transport and retailing sectors. To show case their dominance, the ZCTU began to clash with the government and began to adopt a confrontational approach which caused lots of business and industrial disruptions in operations through boycotts, stay-aways and strikes. One of the most devastating labour unrest was experienced in 1997 when there was almost a total shutdown of the economy due to a massive and highly supported stay away called by the ZCTU. Government’s relations with the ZCTU dwindled and the resultant move was formation of a political party in 1999 by ZCTU together with the support of some civic society organizations. This signalled the end of ZCTU as a government backed labour party and many other stakeholders especially workers who saw the political dimension of ZCTU as negatively affecting industrial relations in pursuit of a political agenda. Since then, the functions of most trade unions which have been affiliated to either of the two politically motivated labour bodies, ZCTU and ZFTU, have since become questionable albeit at the expense of workers.
Despite the fact that their power to influence wages and working conditions and to defend workers has suffered enormously and tends to be quite weak nowadays, it won’t be fair to write-off Zimbabwean trade unions. After a long period which saw virtually no new investment in formal activities taking place in the country, there are encouraging signs that foreign investment is picking up again, creating new opportunities for trade union organisation. Above all, just like in many countries, Zimbabwean trade unions remain a political force to be reckoned with, as they continue to be one of the very few societal organisations in the country with a sizeable constituency, country-wide structures and the potential for mobilizing members on social or political matters. Trade Unions are important political and economic institutions. Unions may use their political power to gain economic objectives as well as to support other legislation which they favour. To obtain their goals, unions may follow a course of action that imposes costs on others quite, irrespective of whether or not the goal is obtained. Furthermore, unions may alter the allocation of a country’s resources among competing users through their efforts on the level and structure of wage rates. Whether trade unions are able to address these challenges and stay relevant for all workers will depend on their ability to revitalize, to develop an organisational socio-economic vision and strategic response to address the changes in the field of work.

Ancient but best – Collin Saunders Hospital exceeds reputation

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe (THZ) run Collin Saunders Hospital is now one of the most ancient hospitals in the Lowveld, having been established in 1964, but is still providing best services to its employees and the surrounding communities.
Speaking to editors and journalists during a THZ-facilitated media tour, Senior Doctor Sheckie Percy Mashange who is the Public Health Medicine Specialist at Collin Saunders Hospital said though the facility is ancient, it remains one of the best medical facilities in the country.
Dr Mashange said the hospital is well equipped with an advanced theatre, radiographic department as well as a well-equipped pharmacy.
“It is quite an old institution, like what the General Manager has highlighted. It was established in 1964 but it remains one of the best hospitals in the country. We have 150 beds, a very advanced radiographic department and an advanced theatre. We also have a well-equipped and stocked pharmacy and it is one of our best running units in the country,” said Dr Mashange.
“Our reputation is good and we serve a population of about 50 000 employees and their dependents as well as the community around us. In total, we serve about 200 000 patients per year and that is quite sizeable compared to other hospitals you have seen. When Dr David Parirenyatwa was still the Minister of Health and Child Care, he used to come here with government pharmacists, showing them how a pharmacy should look like and they ended up taking one of our staff members to be a board member at Natpham,” he added.
The company runs two hospitals, Collin Saunders Hospital in Triangle and Hippo Valley Medical Center in Hippo Valley as well as five clinics that feeds into these hospitals, catering for their employees and their dependents as well as the community around.
THZ Managing Director, Tendai Masawi said, apart from growing and milling sugar the company was running two state of the art hospitals as well as five clinics in its sections servicing their employees and their dependents.
“The company runs two hospitals with 10 doctors and five clinics which take care of employees, dependents and the community around us,” said Masawi.
Collin Saunders Hospital was established in 1964, ten years after the establishment of Triangle Limited while Hippo Valley estates was established in 1956. It has 70 nursing staff.
The company also runs 22 schools under its umbrella and five of those are High Schools with a combined total enrolment of 16 000 learners.

Masvingo province expecting 17 500 tonnes of wheat

By Decide Nhendo

Masvingo province is expecting 17 500 tonnes of winter wheat after it increased the heactres to 3 500 this year from 2 800 hectares last year.
Speaking to TellZim News, Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development (ARDAS) Provincial Director Courage Mahoya said the province was anticipating an increase in yields this year and said the increase was essential to food security especially now when the country is grappling with an El Nino-induced drought.
“Last year we had 2 800ha under winter wheat but this year we increased the hectares to 3 500, and we are expecting to harvest 17 500 tonnes. This is going to ensure food security in the province as you are aware that the province and the country at large is grappling with El Nino-induced drought,” said Mahoya.
He added that all registered irrigation schemes and individual farmers with irrigation facilities in the province had already planted their wheat.
“We have 56 irrigation schemes and 275 gardens as well as 14 farmers, with each having at least 5ha and above. These registered wheat farmers have already planted their winter wheat and its doing well,” said Mahoya.
“Apart from winter wheat, the province has 399 hectares with maize crop. This will ease food shortage in the province,” he added.
During the 18th Post-cabinet briefing, the cabinet said it will be tracking on weekly basis the inputs and resources needed for wheat production in order to ensure maximum yields are realized. Inputs such as the seed, fertilizer, fuel, electricity, farmers’ outstanding payments, finance, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, migratory pests, mechanization, chemicals, insurance, land issues, infrastructure, security/theft, and policy and the regulatory environment will be tracked on a weekly basis in order to ensure that productivity is maximized.

Chiredzi car thief nabbed, vehicle recovered

By Tatiana Mhararira

Luck ran out for a 32 year old Chiredzi man after he was recently arrested by the police for stealing a vehicle.
Fidelis Mapungwana was last week arrested for a number of cases including car theft and housing breaking and unlawful entries.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed Mapungwana’s arrest and said the police is appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects, Edmore Zibowa and Tavonga Nyakunatswa.
“I can confirm the arrest of Mapungwana for unlawful entry and theft in which he together with the other two suspects stole a car at Makondo Extension in Chiredzi.
“We are appealing to the public for information that could aid in the arrest of the remaining suspects. The Police also want to commend the public for sharing crime tip offs, which have been instrumental in detecting crimes, arresting perpetrators, and recovering stolen property,” said Inspector Dhewa.
Allegations are that on May 30, 2024 at Makondo extension, Mapungwana unlocked a Nissan Vannette lorry using an unknown object and pushed it about 10 meters from the open garage and then drove it to an unknown destination.
Police received information to the effect that Mapungwana, Zibowa and Nyakunatswa had stolen the vehicle and thrown the registration plates into the bush.
When arrested, Mapungwana lied to the police that his name was Feleciano Simango in an effort to evade arrest. However, the police managed to reveal his true identity and are now hunting for the two other accomplices Zibowa and Nyakunatswa.
Indications done by the police led to recovery of the stolen vehicle in the Mabeye Area in Chipinge, where he had attempted to smuggle it into Mozambique.
The value of the stolen vehicle was US$4 000, and it was fully recovered.

Score Against Poverty’s LINCZ bear fruits in remote Mwenezi

By Cephas Shava

Mwenezi- As part of efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and enhance community resilience in the remote Mwenezi District, Score Against Poverty, a locally based community organisation is spearheading a successful Indigenous Nature- Based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation in Zimbabwe (LINCZ) covering six wards of the district.
The initiative, which is a consortium partnership also fronted by the Mennonite Central Committee is funded by the Global Affairs Canada and has seen Score Against Poverty taking partners on a tour of the projects sites where the focus was on farmers who engage in fodder production and bee keeping.
Speaking to TellZim News after the tour where farmers shared their success stories, Score Against Poverty Programme Director Caroline Pugeni said the project which started in November last year had a total of 9000 farmers who are on fodder production.
“Our Project started on November 24 last year and so far we have got a total of 9 000 beneficiaries of which 5 400 are female while 3 600 are male. The project is being implemented in six wards of Mwenezi district which are ward 1, 3,4,6,10 and ward 14,” Said Pugeni.
One beneficiary Cosiness Dube who hails from ward 1 said as one of the team leaders she was impressed by the knowledge she acquired from the fodder production project saying supplementing their livestock’s with own made feeds was going a long way in saving the poverty stricken villagers who lives from hand- to-mouth.
“Given that most of the villagers cannot afford to buy their livestock’s supplementary feeds, the fodder production project has brought relief to locals who are now fully equipped with the knowledge on fodder productions.
“Using some fertilizer and various crop remains in 28 days’ time our supplementary feeds will be ready for consumption for our livestocks. Given that drought has become a regular phenomenon in our district, fodder production knowledge which is being imparted by Score Against Poverty is going to go a long way in alleviating poverty,” Said Dube.
Score Against Poverty field Officer, Cynthia Mutsindikwa added that in addition to promoting gender equality, the organisation had a total of 100 bee farmers of which 53 of them were women and 47 men.
She said among several other projects Score Against Poverty also spearhead projects like sustainable harvesting of mopane worms, land rehabilitation through cash for work, clean energy, conservation agriculture, value chains and business development.
