I didn’t vote for Zanu PF deputy mayor

…Maridza talks of betrayal by colleagues
. . .as MDC cllrs boycott first full council meeting

Moses Ziyambi

MASVINGO
– The intriguing power struggles drama at the city council continues to unfold with three MDC Alliance councillors boycotting the first full council meeting held on Monday, a development which was seen as a protest against Collen Maboke’s defiance of a party directive to step down from the position of mayor.
The councillors who did not attend the full council meeting are Godfrey Kurauone of ward four, Daniel Mberikunashe of ward five and the only female councillor Selina Maridza of ward one.
Although the three councillors who boycotted the meeting chose to be diplomatic, hiding behind the finger, it was open that they did not want to be chaired by Maboke.
Councillor Maridza chose to narrate her story from the day she lost the post of the deputy major, saying she was still bitter with colleagues who betrayed her. Maridza said the truth will soon be out and rogue MDC Alliance councillors who are working in cahoots with Zanu PF will soon be exposed.
“Before I even talk about the Monday boycott, I want to set the record straight about how I lost the post of deputy mayor. I was betrayed by the people whom I trusted a lot and I am still bitter with them. Of course they came to apologise to me but it was too late, they had already donated their precious vote to Zanu PF. I feel that I was the most suitable candidate for the post of the deputy mayor considering that I am the only female councillor there,” said Maridza.
Maridza said she respected the party’s position ahead of anything else and felt that anyone who went against party policy must be severely punished.
“I am a loyal party die-hard and I am MDC to the core. I have so much respect for my president that even if I am told to step down, I would do so without second thoughts. I have never challenged the party’s position on anything and I respect only those who follow Chamisa’s instructions. I actually feel sorry for Cllr Kurauone who is being blamed for nothing when we know the real wolfs in sheep clothes. However, I find solace in the fact that the truth will set us free,” she said.
Quizzed further on why she stayed away from the first full council meeting, Maridza chose to be diplomatic, insisting that she will represent the party despite the fact that she was being fought by fellow MDC councillors.
“Look even after the meeting in Harare with president Chamisa, when we came back to elect deputy  chairpersons for committees, Cllr Babylon Beta went on to nominate Cllr Against Chiteme of Zanu PF ahead of me. I ended up nominating myself and went on to win that election. I feel that as a woman, I am being unfairly treated,” said Maridza.
TellZim News contacted Cllr Mberikunashe to find out his reasons for not coming to the full council meeting, and he did not deny that it was a form of protest.
“I am not in a position to comment about that at the moment but for sure I will come to you with full details of what is going on,” said Mberikunashe.
Cllr Kurauone who was initially preferred to be the mayor refused to comment saying he was being accused of leaking sensitive information to the press.
“I am afraid to speak to you because I am victimised everyday with people who think that I leak sensitive information to the press,” Kurauone said.
When contacted for comment on the absence of some councillors in the full council meeting, Maboke said he could not confirm that they had boycotted since they communicated that they would not be able to attend due to other reasons.
“It is important that we were able to hold the meeting because we constituted a quorum. They communicated that they were tied up with other things so I cannot say they boycotted,” said Maboke.
Close sources within MDC Alliance said initially the three councillors had plotted to walk out on the mayor but they were later advised to be more diplomatic and find excuses to stay away.
Maboke became the mayor after getting seven votes against Kuraone’s three votes.

Yemurai Ngwarai (23) of House Number 2009/15 Vakai Cresent, Pangolin, Masvingo, on Wednesday appeared before Masvingo magistrate Rufaro Mangwiro accused of committing an act of domestic violence against her blind father, Richard Ngwarai.
She was charged with violating Section 3(1) (a) as read with Section 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 05.16, ‘physical abuse’.
She was acquitted after pleading self-defence, saying her father had bashed her head against the wall and she had therefore acted to defend herself.
It was the State’s case that on October 07 at around 19:00 hrs, Richard was in his bedroom when he heard her daughter shouting at her step-mother, Fadzai Muzenda, who was cooking in the kitchen.
Upon arriving in the kitchen, Richard tried to refrain her daughter from further insulting Muzenda but she did not stop.
Richard then decided to get hold of his daughter, whom he told to get out of the kitchen but Yemurai responded by taking boiling water which was on the stove and pouring it on his father’s chest.
Muzenda was also burnt on her left hand as she tried to defend her husband from being burnt.
A medical report was presented and it showed that Richard sustained plus or minus three percent burns from the boiling water.
Janeth Mavavi appeared for the State.

Maboke a product of Zanu PF, says Chamisa

…continued defiance mean
expulsion

Moses Ziyambi
MDC Alliance Nelson Chamisa has
fired another salvo at Masvingo mayor Collen Maboke, saying the beleaguered
city father was a product of some Zanu PF arrangement and not the party’s
choice for the coveted position.
Chamisa told TellZim News over
the phone on Tuesday that Maboke was digging for himself a hole in which he
would suffocate should he continue on his chosen path of defiance of the
opposition alliance’s call to step down immediately.
Chamisa said the party had made
itself clear on the kind of arrangement it wanted to see in Masvingo City
Council, and would therefore not accept to continue being held to ransom by one
man.
“This is a very straightforward one.
The party through internal democratic processes, arrived at the candidate who
should be mayor, and Maboke is not that candidate. Maboke is a product of some arrangement
with Zanu, and we said look, we will not have arrangements that are made
without the knowledge of the party. So he has to step aside, if he doesn’t, he
faces the risk of being fired if he does not act to the dictates of the party.
“It is a simple one, he has to
step aside and give way for a proper arrangement as required by the party. He
will be expelled for sure. We can’t allow indiscipline that undermines the
strength of the party. He has to step down right away or be expelled,” Chamisa
said.
He drew comparisons with what
happened in Chegutu and Victoria Falls where mayors were made to step down
after landing the positions by contradicting the party’s preferred
arrangements.
“It would be good if people are
to pull together in one direction rather than remain stubborn while getting
lost. We have serious work to do and we can’t be seen to be talking about the
same issues every day. This has to come to an end sooner than later,” he said.
Maboke controversially landed the
position of mayor at the expense of the party’s then preferred candidate
Godfrey Kurauone after striking a secret trade off deal for the position of
deputy mayor with Zanu PF councillors in exchange for their votes for the
mayoral position.
With three councillors out of 10,
Zanu PF stood no chance of taking the deputy mayoral position had it not been
for the bargain.
In Chegutu, Hillary Muchatibaya
was fired last week for defying party orders to step down, with six councillors
suspended for voting for him against official orders to vote for Maphios
Shumba.
In Victoria Falls, Somvelo Dhlamini
was also forced to step down and pave way for Margaret Varley, the party’s
chosen candidate.

Zaka teacher nearly killed at school for sleeping with married woman

Tsiga Secondary School

ZAKA – Dzingai Muvhu, an
agriculture teacher at Tsiga Secondary School under Chief Nhema, was recently
stabbed by the husband of a village woman he was allegedly dating, TellZim News
has learnt.
It is alleged
that Muvhu was attacked in full view of school children and other teachers in
the school yard on October 22 by a villager identified as Shonga Musimhi who is
husband to Muvhu’s lover. Musimhi was said to have been accompanied by his
uncle Stern Gozho when he accosted Muvhu, accusing him of sleeping with his
wife (name not immediately established).
Sources said it
took the courage of the school head and another villager identified as Alex
Madzivire to restrain Musimhi from using the knife to further hurt a hapless Muvhu.
After the
incident, Gozho fled into the bush but where his wife Dilas Matongo would bring him food.

The food reportedly did not come on time one day and an angry Gozho went home and attacked his wife with a hoe and she was rushed to an
unidentified hospital where she got admitted together with the couple’s
four-weeks-old baby who was also badly injured in the attack.
It is said after
being attacked, Muvhu fled from the school and sought medical treatment at
Ndanga Hospital without reporting the matter to the police as he feared further embarrassment.
The incident was
however later reported to the police, the village head and the chief.
Zaka District
Schools Inspector Samson Chidzurira confirmed the incident but refused to give
detailed information saying he was yet to get to the bottom of the matter.
“I am yet to get
a more detailed report of the incident but I can confirm that I was informed
that one teacher at Tsiga was stabbed and the incident involved a married
village woman,” said Chidzurira
Chief Nhema,
Rangarirai Bwawanda confirmed receiving the report and said he was yet to sit
and hear the matter at his court.
“I received a
report of a teacher at Tsiga School who snatched someone’s wife. We have
already summoned him for hearing,” said Nhema.
Musimhi was said
to be still on the run by the time of writing, but his uncle Gozho was
reportedly caught last Saturday.

Professional
boxer and former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion, Charles
Manyuchi has sweet news for the district of Chipinge and surrounding areas.
Manyuchi,
who runs a sports academy in Chivhu where he was allocated 3.5 hectares of land
by Chikomba Rural District Council (RDC), told TellZim News that he was
scouting for talent in Chipinge.
The
boxer, who is rated the 35th best boxer in the world, was in
Chipinge on a look and learn tour of Magistics Gangara Farm owned by Prosper
Chibaya at Clearwater about 17km north-east of Chipinge town.
“The Charles
Manyuchi Sports Academy in Chivhu is well-fenced and has administrative offices
that are fully operational. We are now looking at how we can now expand to
Chipinge and help children here discover their boxing abilities,” said
Manyuchi.
The
academy, which was officially opened by former Minister of State for Industry
and Commerce Mike Bimha, has been praised for giving disadvantaged boxers a
chance to shine while unveiling raw talent where it exists.
“Our
place in Chivhu is open to any talented sport person of any age and it caters
for soccer, volleyball, netball and boxing disciplines. The academy focuses
much on the under-privileged and people from marginalised societies. Chipinge
is my first choice out of Chivhu since my business partner has a farm here,”
said Manyuchi.
The
academy has hosted three boxing tournaments and the latest was held in August
this year against some selected boxers from Zambia.
According
to the boxing ace, no one from the Charles Manyuchi Sports Academy has ever
lost.
“All
the boxers that we fielded have won their fights. We have 3 female boxers who
are doing well. We put value on our sports persons by giving them a good image
in form of branded kits. We also give them decent pay-outs,” Manyuchi said.
Sports
persons under Charles Manyuchi Sports Academy go in camp for a month before
matches.
“Our
sport person board meets in Borrowdale whenever we are to hold matches. We do
this in order to give them enough attention so they enter competition fit and
ready for the matches,” he said.
Manyuchi
was born in Bulawayo and grew up in Mutoko where he attended school at Chifamba
High in Mudzi.
During
his amateur boxing career, Manyuchi joined boxing stables between 2006 and 2010
in sugar estate Triangle and later moved to Masvingo.
He was
signed for professional boxing by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotion of Zambia in
2012 when he went to the neighbouring for a boxing tournament.
Manyuchi
breeds dogs for sale as part of his income-generating projects at his 100
hectare farm in Chivhu that he was allocated by the government of Zimbabwe.

Cephas Shava
MWENEZI- In
an incident that will put the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec)
into disrepute, a Marirangwe Primary School deputy head Lyson Sithole lost the
English Paper 1 examination scheduled to be written last Monday after it fell
off his motor bike when he had gone to collect them from Sacred Heart High
School centre.
Close
to the 12 km peg, Sithole who was tying the papers on the back of his motorcycle,
checked the papers only to realise that they were missing.
He
said he made an immediate U-turn, checking the papers along the road but in
vain and he immediately made a police report at Rutenga Police Station.
The
papers were picked up by a 16 year old passer-by identified as Lackson Gumbo who
resides at Guramatunhu along the Rutenga-Boli road who then informed the
authorities.
The
District Schools Inspector (DSI) Lackson Zanamwe, Schools Inspector Philip Gumbo,
Sithole, the police and TellZim News reporter immediately rushed to the scene.
The
papers were recovered and were still sealed and the passer-by who picked them
up said he took the papers for safe keeping while he alerted the authorities.
Zanamwe
regretted the incident but expressed gratification that the papers were found
intact without any sign of tempering on them.
“This
is the worst unfortunate incident we do not tolerate but we are a bit happy as
you can see for yourself that the paper is intact and nothing was tempered
with,” said Zanamwe.
Owing
to the delays in recovering the papers, the examination which was scheduled to
start at 9:00 am was delayed by about an hour.

ZSAES criticises sugarcane farmers over low production

Beatific Gumbwanda
CHIREDZI – The Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station (ZSAES) has lamented the decrease in news farmers’ yields, saying the drop from 600 000 tonnes per year to about 300 000 tonnes witnessed recently could not be justified.
These sentiments were expressed during a Zimbabwe sugar industry seminar held at Triangle Country Club last week.
The seminar ran under the theme, ‘Improving Sugarcane Production in Zimbabwe’ which is the 24th of its kind.
ZSAES director, Dr Muntubani Nzima castigated the farmers for adopting what he termed a donor syndrome similar to that among subsistence rural farmers who largely rely on free inputs facilities like the Presidential Inputs Scheme.
“Unfortunately, a number of us sugarcane farmers are behaving like the rest who just want free things. I heard some of you talking about command sugarcane. You are asking Dr Nzima and the rest of Zimbabwe to fund your commercial production which is continuously declining,” he said.
Dr Nzima said a lot of capital was used to purchase fertilizers and herbicides that he said were later resold by beneficiaries at giveaway prices.
Nzima said farmers should take farming as a business in order for them and the economy to prosper.
“When I talk about this, it’s because we have the ability to turn things right. We saw three million spent on fertilizers and half a million on herbicides and we can put even billions but some of the fertilizers will never saw a day in the cane field.
“We need to win ourselves not just asking for help from Tongaat Hulett. Unless we as farmers change our attitude from today and view farming as a business, we will not prosper,” he said.
Most farmers in the Lowveld are under-performing and most of their land is being under-utilised.business
