ZVISHAVANE – Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer commanding Zvishavane-Mberengwa policing district, Chief Superintendent Edward Ncube has challenged police officers to be good at their work, saying society looked up to them for safety and security.
Speaking during the launch of a new Foot Patrol Unit at Mandava Bus Terminus recently, Ncube said police officers should do their duties in a way that inspires confidence in the people they serve.
“Ladies and gentleman, patrolling and doing beats is part of everyday police work. We should not be ashamed of our work. All over the world, police officers do beats and they patrol communities to ensure better observation and greater interaction with the people.
“When taking the oath on appointment, one swears to be faithful and to bear true allegiance to Zimbabwe and observe the laws of Zimbabwe. Therefore, a member who leaves his or her point of duty without permission or reasonable excuse is wayward. He or she is neither faithful, loyal, dependable nor trustworthy,” said Ncube.
Members of the police were warned against selecting duties since the very nature of police work demands a lot of discipline, making it impossible for one to be selective.
Ncube said some members of the police despise patrols, considering them to be menial work for the less educated and unsophisticated.
“I get worried when police officers desert their responsibilities when they are supposed to be out protecting the people and fighting crime in communities,” said Ncube, urging members of the public to cooperate with the police for a safer society.
He also encouraged the media to promote accountability by exposing police officers who spend their time doing what is not expected of them.local

Another victim of 2008 political violence dies in Mberengwa

The late Trynos Shava MDC T secretary for defence

Tinaani Nyabereka

MBERENGWA – The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), Midlands South secretary for defence, Trynos Shava, who died on May 04, has been described as a gallant fighter for freedom.
The 44-year-old Shava passed on after a long battle with an undisclosed illness which many people, however, have said was not unrelated to the injuries he suffered in the run-up to the violent 2008 presidential election runoff as well as in the early 2000s.
Shava rose through the ranks from the youth wing of the opposition party up to the position of Midlands South secretary for defence, a position he held for two consecutive terms until the time of his death.
MDC-T Midlands South spokesperson, Munyaradzi Mutandavari said the party and the wider society had lost a gallant fighter who suffered heavily for the sake of democracy and freedom.
“We have been robbed of one of our gallant fighters, Trynos Shava, from Mberengwa South. He was one of our dedicated sons of the struggle who fought well for the rights of the people and for the achievement of a democratic nation.
“He stood against many of Big Chitoro’s atrocities in Mberengwa and suffered heavily for it. He was instrumental in building our structures in parts of Zvishavane and Mberengwa districts,” said Mutandavari.
Wilson Kufa ‘Biggie’ Chitoro, who died in 20014 and was declared a liberation war hero and buried at Midlands Provincial Heroes Acre, masterminded a reign of terror in Mberengwa in the early 2000s, torturing many opposition supporters resulting in the death of the likes of Fainos Kufazvinei Zhou.
In 2008, Chitoro denounced Robert Mugabe for using him to commit acts of terror against opposition members, and regretted having committed many atrocities.
Shava’s long-time workmate and colleague, Lewlyn Sibanda described the fallen opposition member as a dedicated and courageous cadre who stood for the principles of freedom.
“Shava was a freedom fighter who was courageous, principled and was a no-retreat-no-surrender type of person and he will always be remembered for that,” said Sibanda.
Shava was laid to rest on the May 07 at his family homestead in Mberengwa.
Present at his burial was many people including MDC-T Zvishavane senator Lilian Timveos, national council member Denias Mudzingwa, Midlands provincial secretary general Zenzo Hove, Midlands South spokesperson Munyaradzi Mutandavari, traditional leaders and several community members.politics

‘Sango Border Post misnamed’

Herbert Hasani Pikhela

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – People living in the Sengwe communal lands have welcomed plans for a possible rebranding of the Sango Border Post, saying the current name was inappropriate and was doing a disservice to efforts to market the place.
Sango is a Shona name for ‘bush’ or ‘forest’, a name which surrounding communities feel is not only negative but does not represent the area’s Tsonga/Shangani heritage.
Some of the local names that have been suggested include Justin Chauke (a late local Zanla commander), Xilotlela and Xikwalakwala.
Gaza Trust director, Herbert Hasani Pikhela said rebranding should be comprehensive, taking into consideration the Tsonga heritage as well as the divisions of their community by colonialism.
"The government of Zimbabwe' rebranding programme is a noble initiative. Surely we have a tainted past as a republic and wearing a new face is justified. In the name of rebranding Zimbabwe, I suggest that the name Sango for our dear south-east border with Mozambique be rebranded.
"Surely, how can we say our border is a bush? Why did we choose to go against the local Tsonga names? With all our contributions to the liberation of our dear Zimbabwe, the idle ruins of Gonakujingwa restriction camp bearing good evidence to that, can we be rewarded with such a name?
"I heard Tokwe-Mukosi Dam is being given its proper name. As we celebrate 38 years of independence let's relieve our dear border of this curse. Surely we can't attract any meaningful investment in the shadows of such a name," said Phikela.
Government has renamed Tokwe-Mukosi to Tugwi Mukosi to better resemble the correct pronunciation of the two rivers that feed into the dam.
Phikela said locals should be given space to define their places by naming them. He also said locals were better placed to explain why certain places should be given particular names.
“Locals should be given space to define their places. When people visit us as the locals, they ask us the meaning of Sango and it's so embarrassing to tell them it's a bush according to our knowledge,” Phikela said.local

Mwenezi girl frames ex in boyfriend murder

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Mercy Chuma (18) of Muchacha village under Chief Maranda falsely implicated her ex-boyfriend Leoroyd Matomi in the murder of her boyfriend, leading to the arrest and incarceration of Mutomi for several months, the Mwenezi Magistrates’ Court recently heard.
Chuma pleaded guilty to a charge of contravening Section 180 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 23, ‘deliberately supplying false information to public authority’.
Magistrate Honest Musiiwa strongly warned Chuma and sentenced her to 10 days behind bars or alternatively to pay a fine of US$30.
Asked by the magistrate why she committed the offence, Chuma claimed the relatives of her deceased boyfriend Accept Gumbo forced her to implicate Matomi, although she herself was aware that he was not the culprit.
Represented by prosecutor Angelinah Makonya, the State’s case was that on October 21, 2017 police detectives went to Maranda business centre to investigate the murder of Gumbo.
They proceeded to the scene where they approached Chuma who was the key eyewitness.
Chuma, in a recorded statement, informed detectives that Matomi was the one who committed the offence, leading to his arrest as the suspect.
The court further heard that after further police investigations, it was discovered that one Leon Tauyanago Sibanda was the real culprit who had committed the crime and fled.
This led to the arrest of Chuma but Matomi had already stayed in remand prison for many months in connection with the crime he had nothing to do with.crime

Prof Zvobgo lambasts students’ demonstrations

Professor Rungano Zvobgo

…accepts blame for poor services at GZU

Elliot Jinjika / Mavis Nyamayaro

MASHAVA – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo on Monday addressed students at Chemberi Stadium where he criticised the demonstrations that rocked Mashava campus on April 12.
Zvobgo described the protests as an absurd way of bringing out grievances, saying students should have used ‘appropriate’ methods of engagement.
“We say no to demonstrations and damage of school property. Why should we demonstrate instead of sitting down and discussing issues at stake in a peaceful manner? We accepted that we were wrong, wrong and wrong that is why we did not take stern measures on students who vandalised public property…but we say no to demonstrations; that is not acceptable,” said Zvobgo.
He however acknowledged that services at the campus were bad, blaming poor management for the problems.
“We fail just because we are humans, even some of you supplement (degree modules) when you fail so failure is not your privilege alone. We are also humans. We have failed so we are supplementing; we do not need to destroy the institution that should certificate us. We must be united as one,” Zvobgo said.
He said the university was, however, attending to all the problems raised highlighted by students and was working towards additional soccer grounds, improving the menu in the dining hall, regular cutting of grass on all campus grounds and the installation of Wi-Fi boosters at every section.
Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (Zicosu) GZU Chapter chairperson, Kelvin Kasiwulaya also said his organisation believed in dialogue and not violence.
The demonstrations took the university by surprise, with students running riot over many grievances including a sudden increase in tuition fees, poor management, poor Wi-Fi connectivity, bad food in the dining hall and a poorly-resourced library.
The demonstrations started peacefully but turned violent after riot police threw tear gas canisters in a bid to disperse the students, leading to damage of property and looting.
Seven students suspected to be the ring leaders were later arrested, and their case was still in the courts of law by the time of writing.local

Bitter Chiredzi Town chair dumps Zanu PF

Francis Moyo

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Disillusioned by his loss in the chaotic Zanu PF primary election for Chiredzi West, Francis Moyo has declared he will contest in the general elections as an independent candidate.
Alongside other candidates, the Chiredzi Town Council chairperson was defeated by Farai Musikavanhu but he feels the process was not credible.
His pronouncements to go it alone have set him on a collision course with the ruling party which has made it clear that those who contest as an independents would have automatically expelled themselves from the party.
Moyo, however, said he will be representing the true Zanu PF members who were denied the right to vote for their favourite candidate.
“I am going to stand as an independent in the general elections as I am answering various Zanu PF members’ calls to represent them in parliament. Real Zanu PF members were denied their right to vote while many MDC members found their way into our porous cells. That has encouraged me to stand as an independent candidate ahead of the general election,” said Moyo.
Together with incumbent MP Darlington Chiwa, Norman Sharara and 10 other aspiring Zanu PF councillors, Moyo wrote to the Zanu PF commissariat complaining about gross irregularities in the primaries but nothing materialised.
Chiwa too attacked the commissariat, which is led by Rtd Lt Gen Engelbert Rugeje, for what he implied to be total its failure to successfully execute party programmes.
“We have a problem with our commissariat department. We never ran a successful programme with our new commissariat department ranging from cell creation, verification and even elections,” said Chiwa, who himself failed to cast his own ballot as his name had disappeared from the Ward 18 cell register.
Musikavanhu obtained 3 427 votes, Chiwa came second with 1160 while Moyo came third with 56.politics

Mwenezi man sells home, moves in with in-laws

Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – A somewhat foolish man sold his own only homestead and has since took his family to his in-laws where they have been accommodated.
Zvidzai Tambikai of Chirimigwa village under Chief Neshuro and his family are now staying with his in-laws after selling his home to one Macheza.
Although repeated efforts to get a comment from Tambikai were fruitless as his mobile was not reachable, village head Chirimigwa confirmed the incident.
“Tambikai sold his homestead yet he didn’t have alternative accommodation. After some deliberations, his mother in-law who also resides in Chirimigwa village decided to accommodate him. Right now Tambikai and his family are residing at his mother in-law’s place,” said village head Chirimigwa.
Sources told TellZim News that after Tambikai sold the homestead for about US$900 without the knowledge of his wife, but later tried to reverse the deal.
Macheza then engaged the local leadership which included the village head to assist him to evict Tambikai.
After the intervention of the local leadership, with Tambikai having indicated that he could not afford to reimburse Macheza, he was ordered to pave way for the new owner.local

BIKITA – The Kufandada Irrigation Scheme, located near Nyika growth point, were recently officially opened together with the Bindangombe Irrigation Scheme in Chivi by the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri.
Kufandada Irrigation Scheme was built courtesy of the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF) and has got the capacity to irrigate 28 hectares of land sustaining approximately 120 households.
In the case of Bindangombe, the project is benefitting over 1000 people and irrigating 34 hectares with room for expansion depending on water availability.
The two projects will see the beneficiaries shifting from rain-fed agriculture to all-year-round irrigation, allowing for the production of cash crops and horticulture.
Addressing delegates in Bikita, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Jefta Sakupwanya, who stood on behalf of Muchinguri-Kashiri, applauded CRIDF saying the two projects were vital in efforts to reduce food shortages among villagers.
“I have no doubt that the two projects will go a very long way in demonstrating to policy makers how we can mitigate poverty by creating employment and improving food security for the communities.  They will also serve to show the importance of boosting our agro-based economies. Projects like these have a credible potential to transform, for the better, thousands of lives if government mainstreams projects planning and development programmes,” said Dr Sakupwanya.
The Kufandada Irrigation Scheme comes with a fish farming project; the fish having been stocked in Rozva Dam which is the source of water for the irrigation.
The fish project came through the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) which trained 16 farmers including 5 Agritex extension officers to ensure the sustainability of the project.
Present at the occasion was DFID and UK representative; Alex Harvey, Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) director of infrastructure; Mapolao Mokoena and Masvingo Provincial Administrator (PA), Fungai Mbetsa.local

Businessman Chifamba’s kidnap charges dismissed

Precila Takabvirakare
MPANDAWANA – The Gutu Magistrates’ Court this week acquitted businessman Liberty Chifamba on charges of kidnapping, improper use of fire arms, theft and unauthorised use of property belonging to Lovemore Denhere.
The court found that the State failed to prove a prima facie case on all the allegations that were made against Chifamba.
Chifamba was acquitted on basis that the gun pointing allegations that he faced were unbelievable as no other witness, besides Denhere, was called to corroborate his version of the story.
The court also found that Denhere’s testimony was also full of inconsistencies to warrant a conviction of Chifamba.
Denhere alleged that he was kidnapped but the court found that his allegations were unreasonable as no evidence was presented to show that he made extra efforts to escape.
He also failed to disclose the matter to Amos Mapfumo whom they met in Zvishavane so that he could escape the kidnap.
The court also found that Chifamba took the money in Denhere’s house and the car after his wife Glenda Pambayi had admitted and made a cautioned statement that she stole US$5 000 from his shop as part of paying back the stolen money.
The State, led by Millicent Azangwe, had alleged that on March 7 this year, Chifamba had a misunderstanding with Pambayi, whom she accused of syphoning money from his shop where she used to work.
Panganayi allegedly used the money to buy a car from Amos Mapfumo who stays in Zvishavane.
In a fit of rage, Chifamba went to Denhere’s house and took $974 from the wardrobe before demanding the keys to the car claiming it to be his.
The following day, Chifamba forcibly ordered Denhere to get into his car and drove to Masvingo.
On their way Chifamba produced a gun and threatened to kill Denhere if he does not return the money which he said had been from his business by Denhere’s wife.
From Masvingo they proceeded to Zvishavane where they met Mapfumo, a car dealer, and processed the sale of Denhere’s car.
They later returned to Denhere’s house and Chifamba ordered Pambayi to write an affidavit indicating that she had stolen money from his shop.
After the incident, Denhere reported the matter to the police leading to Chifamba’s arrest.crime
