GWERU –   City of Gweru has revealed that plans are being made to purchase new water pumps and refuse collection trucks as a way of reducing years of service delivery backlogs.
Speaking at a service level benchmarking (SLB) preview meeting at council offices, Town Clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza said work was underway to secure new pumps and refuse equipment in order to increase water supply and improve waste management in the city.
“Currently we are working on acquiring a new pump to improve our water supply in the city as we are currently not pumping water to some suburbs. We draw most of our water from Gwenoro Dam but due to pumping challenges, we are not producing what is enough.
“So work is underway to acquire pumps to increase our water supply. The pumps cost a lot; we need a big budget because one pump goes for approximately $850 000. We urge residents to effectively contribute by paying their monthly bills so that our services can become better,” said Gwatipedza.
She also touched on the problems being faced with waste disposal, saying the city’s 15 hectare dumpsite was no longer capable of sufficiently handling the growing needs.
“As for the dumpsite, there is need for maintenance because of the amount of waste disposed there. For us to get a new dumpsite, we need $1.5 million. We purchased a bulldozer to help in maintenance work and we have since got involved in recycling work. We have up to seven companies such as Delta that are helping us to recycle plastics and bottles. This has helped to reduce the load at the dumpsite,” she said.
The SLB review team toured the water treatment facility at Gwenoro, the dumpsite as well as the Cambrishire sewer plant, with recommendations that areas that needed urgent attention include road signage, drainage and the high costs of waste management.local
                                                                                                                                              
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Mazarire brings 15 free doctors to city clinics

Zanu PF Masvingo Urban parliamentary candidate, Taguma Mazarire has hired the services of a medical team of over 15 doctors drawn from different parts of the country to offer free services the city’s three clinics.
The medical team will be offering their services at Rujeko, Mazorodze and Runyararo clinics from June 9 and 10.
The doctors will be led by Dr Masimba Mhangami and will be offering free consultation, free treatment and free cancer screening.
There will also be free antenatal check-ups and ultrasound scan.
Dr Mhangami told TellZim News that his team will be comprised of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and radiographers.
“The community of Masvingo is blessed to have this. People should take advantage of this opportunity to consult doctors free of charge.
“We will be offering our services for two days at the city clinics and we hope we will reach out to as many people as possible during the two days,” said Dr Mhangami.
City of Masvingo mayor, Hubert Fidze said the initiative was most welcome as the country’s health services sector was deplorable.
“Accessing a doctor has now become a privilege for a few people. This initiative will go a long way in making sure that the people of Masvingo gain access to medical care.
“The government should make sure such initiatives are done regularly. We thank Mazarire for his big heart and we hope more people like him come forward,” said Fidze.
Mazarire, whose campaign is hinged on the #MasvingoUrbanWeWant mantra, said he will make sure that everyone will be accorded a chance to access medical care.
“I have always said it is part of our collective responsibility to build the Masvingo urban we want. No man from planet Mars will come and do it for us. We have to pull our resources together to take care of our people.
“Masvingo urban and the province at large need representatives who will go and push for policies that will improve the livelihoods of our people in all spheres of life. I have called for this team of doctors to come and offer free services to our people because I know it is the right for our people to gain access to proper medical care,” said Mazarire.health

After long bruising battles coupled with heartaches, protest vote threats and apathy in both Zanu PF and MDC-T primary elections Taguma Benjaman Mazarire and Jacob Nyokanhete have finally emerged as the two parties’ respective parliamentary candidates for Masvingo Urban.
Mazarire romped to victory after beating Edison Zvobgo Jnr, Godhati Dunira Hungwe and little-known Gordon Gomba.
MDC-T’s Takanayi Mureyi had been given the candidacy on a silver platter after going uncontested but made a sudden volte face, saying he had been reassigned to a national post.
This created a chance for the likes of City of Masvingo mayor Hubert Fidze, Boniface Mazarire, lawyer Derick Charamba, MDC-T Masvingo district chairperson Muranganwa Chanyau, Admire Wakurawarebwa and David Charirwe to contest.
It was, however, little-known chattered accountant Nyokanhete who came out victorious in primaries held on June 03.
Nyokanhete has, however, been facing resistance from his party structures that regard him as a novice.
Some have even gone on to endorse Mazarire, who is the son to the Zanu PF candidate, as the winner despite the fact that he lost to Nyokanhete by five votes.
The argument being peddled by the pro MDC-T’s Mazarire supporters is that the election has been rigged chiefly in Ward 8 where 47 people voted.
Masvingo provincial chairperson, James Gumbi has, however, declared Nyokanhete as the winner and called all genuine party cadres to rally behind he winning candidate and move forward.
“Nyokanhete is our candidate for Masvingo urban and I plead with party cadres to stop fermenting divisions and support the winner,” said Gumbi.
There has been a verbal warfare in the MDC-T’s WhatsApp groups with supporters and losing candidates refusing to endorse Nyokanhete.
Fidze conceded defeat as did Chanyau but Mazarire refused, claiming he was the actual winner.
Chanyau, who stands accused of running away with ballot boxes in Ward 8, however, said the election was rigged, claiming the figures did not tally.
“Genuine results are Nyokanhete polled 333 votes in nine wards excluding Ward 8. Now they are saying Ward 8 voted 147 people when in actual fact 47 people voted. If you add 333 form nine wards plus the alleged 147 you do not get 399 which is the figure being announced.
“Personally I respect this institution MDC-T but if this remain like this some leaders are going to lose our respect. There is no reason to keep on usurping the will of the people,” said Chanyau in a leaked WhatsApp group chat.
MDC-T’s Mazarire also posted that he was the true winner, claiming he was in possession of the ‘real’ results.
“I thank God. Masvingo Urban has spoken. We have the real results and I thank you for choosing me as your candidate. The Ward 8 ballot box had only 47 votes and if you give all of those votes to Nyokanhete he will not even come close to my votes,” said Mazarire.politics

CHIREDZI – Vice President Kembo Mohadi, who is also the Minister of National Peace and Reconciliation, last weekend said the Gukurahundi atrocities that killed mainly Ndebele people in the 1980s, should not be an issue since other ethnic groups also suffered at the hands of the Ndebele in the past.
Addressing hundreds of Zanu PF supporters during a rally at Tshovani Stadium, Mohadi said Shona people, for example, were still pained by Ndebele raids of the pre-colonial period.
“We came a long back. Shona people are complaining that the Ndebele’s took our beautiful women and fat cattle. Huh? The Ndebeles are also crying that the Shonas swept us during the Gukurahundi massacres, isn’t it? That’s what we all say but we have to forgive each other and unite as a nation,” said Mohadi.
He said it was not only the Ndebele who were victims of past atrocities as the Shona too suffered at the hands of the Ndebele at some point in history.
“We need national reconciliation and healing as Zimbabweans. I know there were a lot of atrocities which happened even before Ian Smith’s era. Taitorerana minda, tichitorerana mombe (We would seize each other’s land, cattle) and other things,” said Mohadi.
He called for unconditional forgiveness, saying the country could not afford to be held back by misdeeds of the past.
“There are no tribes here, we are all Zimbabweans. Everyone was affected by war and when we fought, we were all the same and called each other as comrades,” said Mohadi.

ZVISHAVANE – The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Owen Ncube last week officially opened a new council-owned flea market built reportedly to the tune of US$200 000.
Zvishavane Town Council has set for itself targets to ensure all informal traders are moved from the streets to the new market which can house up to 400 informal traders.   
Speaking at the occasion, Ncube said local authorities should provide vendors with appropriate facilities in order to put an end to lawless trading on the streets.
“I wish to call upon all local authorities in the province facing the challenge of vending to take practical measures to respond to the situation in a positive manner as demonstrated by Zvishavane Town Council.
“Instead of embarking on fruitless attempts to chase away vendors from the streets and other places, councils must avail appropriate facilities at suitable sites,” said Ncube.
Zvishavane town secretary, Tinoda Mukutu said the new flea market was built in response to President Emmerson Mnangagwa`s programme to improve economic conditions in the first100 days of his assuming office.
“Our vision is to become a municipality by 2019. In order for us to achieve this vision, we have embarked on a number of projects using our resources. We also have partnerships with companies like Mimosa for the refurbishment of Mandava Stadium into a state-of-the-art stadium.
“Other projects that are ongoing include the refurbishment of the town’s swimming pool, installation and repairing of street lights, treatment of water and sewer upgrading, surfacing of roads and many more,” said Mukutu.local

The Junior Council has been revived after a 10-year hiatus; with Jubilant Zulu, Ropafadzo Rutsvara and Anne Mukaka being elected as mayor, deputy mayor and town clerk respectively.
The institution, which dates back to the 1950s, was brought back to life on May 11 at the Civic Centre, with a total of 14 pupils being sworn into different positions.
Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Josaya Hungwe said the new junior council should function as a voluntary and political body representing all children under its jurisdiction.
“We expect these young leaders to work with or to partner various clubs and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that seek to promote children`s rights,” Hungwe said.
He said the province was experiencing many cases of violation of children’s rights, adding that such vices as child sexual and physical abuse, early marriages, exploitation of orphans and other vulnerable children needed to be fought.
Hungwe challenged the incoming board to take the responsibility of reaching out to all vulnerable and abused children.
“Once you get into office, it becomes your responsibility to look out for these children and help them; be the defenders of children’s rights. I also urge you to take part in decision-making processes especially with regards to such issues,” Hungwe said.
In her address, Zulu said she aimed to come up with an action plan for 2018-19 which would include creating child-friendly spaces in schools and communities, distributing stationery to less privileged learners and raising awareness on drugs and alcohol abuse.education

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC) has adopted a Public Private Community Partnerships (PPCPs) in its quest to attain sustainable goals of reducing poverty, hunger and improving water and sanitation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The motto was ‘No one should be left behind’ as the partnership with Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe celebrated the commissioning of the Gudo Community Clinic last week.
The project is one of a number of initiatives that has brought together communities, the local authority and the private sector.
Tongaat Hulett handed over the Gudo Community Clinic to the council after the company took over construction when it had reached window level.
The sugar producer took over at a time when the local authority expected donor funding which had, however, failed to materialise since 2004.
Chiredzi RDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Isaac Matsilele who was represented by Mikia Majatame said the plans for the project were done over 10 years ago.
“Indeed, the construction of Gudo Clinic has come far. The plan was made back in 2004, with promise of donor funding.
“This did not materialise until Tongaat Hulett came and took over construction. Chiredzi RDC constructed staff houses, with help from the Community Share Ownership Trust,” he said.
The sugar company contributed US$43 250.88, Chiredzi RDC contributed US$29 786 while some US$564 came from the Community Share Ownership Trust.
Tongaat Hulett managing director, Sydney Mutsambiwa said the company was committed to the development of the southern region of the country.
“Tongaat Hulett’s operations; Triangle and Hippo Valley Estates, have been on a drive to facilitate the development of the south eastern region. Our key areas of focus for socio-economic development are health (water and sanitation), education and infrastructure,” said Mutsambiwa.
“The contribution to the Gudo community through the completion of the clinic comes at the back of a donation made to capacitate Chiredzi Hospital in 2013. Some 158 beds were donated by the company, some wards were painted and a donation of 10 thousand litre water tanks valued at US$60 000 was made,” he added.health

BEITBRIDGE – The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has been praised for its apolitical commitment to the welfare of citizens as demonstrated by the presence of its personnel and equipment at the MDC Alliance rally in Beitbridge last week.
In a country where State resources are deployed only at government and Zanu PF functions, it was refreshing that the civil society was stepping forward to fill the gap, MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa said.
He was reacting to the presence of the Red Cross at the stadium before and during the rally which was attended by thousands of cheering supporters.
“Many have described this as political maturity within ourselves as Zimbabweans. Let not politics divide us, it is only our perception and thinking that may differ but we are one.
“We are moving towards change, where medical practitioners value their duties regardless of the nature of event; be it Zanu PF or MDC programmes. Medical practitioners should be everywhere even at tollgates” Chamisa said.
Speaking at the same occasion MDC-T woman chairperson Lynnette Karenyi said if all organisations in Zimbabwe could learn from Red Cross, the country would be a better place.
One Beitbridge resident who spoke to TellZim News said emergency health and ambulance services were critical at big public events.
“All these people you see have different medical needs; some have high blood pressure and some are diabetic and may need urgent attention at any time. Such services as first aid are of paramount importance at events like this,” said the resident.

CHIREDZI – The Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC) has completed five projects that it recently undertook to rapidly implement as a quick-fix solution to some of the nagging challenges faced by the people.
The council tarred the 4.1 km Chiredzi – Hippo Valley Road, implemented the Rupangwana and Chibwedziva piped water schemes, Gweseche Clinic, which is not yet complete, and the Gudo Clinic which was commissioned last week.
Chiredzi RDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Isaac Matsilele told the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Josaya Hungwe in a briefing at council offices that the projects were an important part of the local authority’s developmental plans.
“From January this year, under the patronage of the new dispensation, we identified five projects that were supposed to be completed in 100 days. Some of the projects were completed and others will be completed in the next 100 days.
“We constructed two clinics, Gudo, which is complete and Gwaseche, which are still under construction. We also completed construction of a 4.1 kilometre tarred road from Chiredzi to Hippo Valley. Some 3.3 km were constructed last year to make it 7.4 kilometres.
“We are also re-gravelling a 28 km stretch of the Makambe – Madzingira Road which is now at 60 percent complete. We recently finished construction of two piped water schemes in Rupangwana and Chibwedziva,” said Matsilele.
Hungwe said he was humbled by the council’s efforts to improve conditions in the areas under its jurisdiction.
 “This is the longest wide road I have so far commissioned in Masvingo province and I think the longest across the country as well,” said Hungwe.local

CHIREDZI – Zanu PF Chiredzi West parliamentary candidate, Farai Musikavanhu, has taken the fight to sugarcane giant Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe (THZ) management over what he describes as ill treatment and abuse of workers saying the company is making huge profits while workers live in squalor.
Musikavanhu, who is former THZ agriculture manager, said there is just nor room for ill treatment of workers in the new dispensation and will fight until the lives have been uplifted.
THZ is listed in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and, according to Musikavanhu, is recording large sums of profits for its operations in Zimbabwe.
In a media tour organized by Musikavanhu, he said the company is failing to upgrade the welfare of its employees who are living in houses without electricity while the company generates 39 megawatts of electricity from its Hippo Valley power station which is supplied into the national grid.
“I have no personal vendetta with my former company but I am just trying to make it right for the employees.
“This company is listed on the JSE and declares profits in Zimbabwe and their production level is at 75% installed capacity. We can’t say THZ suffers economic setbacks like what other companies did.
“This is called corporate corruption. The company generates electricity to the national grid but workers are living in dilapidated houses with no electricity. Electricity is only supplied to a bottle store and is a bottle store more important than the houses of employees?” said Musikavanhu.
Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe recorded 17.4 million profit in 2016 and 25 million in 2017.
Zimbabwe Sugarcane Milling Workers Union (ZSMIWU) Secretary General Faster Gono also expressed the same sentiments saying it is high time THZ looks into the welfare of its workers.
