MASVINGO – Jichidza High School from Zaka and Hwiru Primary School from Gutu scooped the first prize in the secondary and primary school categories respectively at the National Aids Council (N.A.C) provincial quiz competitions held at Victoria High School last Friday.
The competitions which had seven schools each from Masvingo’s seven districts and four pupils per school was running under the theme “Closing the tap of new HIV infections”
In the secondary category, Jichidza High School came in first with 58 percent and walked away with a cash prize of $300, Chirumba High School from Bikita district came second with 54 percent and walked away with $250 while Maranda High from Mwenezi district came in third with 42,15percent and got a $200 cash prize.
Hwiru Primary School who were defending the tittle won with 82 percent and walked away with a cash prize of $300, while Vushe from Zaka recorded 68,5 percent worth $200 cash prize and Margaret Hugo had 64,5 percent worth $100.
All participants at the competitions were given each a satchel, rulers, pens and a t-shirt.
Speaking TellZim News after the competitions, Provincial Education Director (PED), Zedius Chitiga said he was happy by the effort shown by Margaret Hugo and scooping a bronze medal.
“I was delighted with what the school of the blind (Margaret Hugo) did, how they managed to do well in the spellings, abbreviations and general knowledge, they surely deserved a medal,” said Chitiga
He also said that these quiz competitions helped pupils by enhancing them in life skills, sex and sexuality.education
