HARARE – The Midlands State University (MSU) and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) girls’ soccer teams put up a spirited show at the just-ended Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa) cluster one games held at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).

It was, however, MSU that proved to be the big sisters of the game after they were crowned champions following a 8-0 rout against UZ in the grand finale.

GZU won bronze after finishing at number three, beating a host of other strong competitors from across the whole country.

Over ten private and state universities competed in such disciplines as athletics, football, handball and basketball.

Despite coming into the tournament as underdogs the GZU girls’ soccer team shocked some of the tournament's favourites with a stellar performance. MSU, on the other hand, had come in as strong favourites, being the defending champions.

GZU, MSU, Women's University in Africa (WUA) Africa University (AU) and Chinhoyi University of Technology (Cut) were grouped together.

In their first encounter, GZU thrashed WUA 8-0 before losing 5-0 to MSU. They also settled for a goalless draw against Cut but won 2-0 when they played their last match against AU.

GZU proceeded to the semis as best runners up in Group A but fell 4-0 against the hosts.

They then played the third and fourth playoffs versus other semifinal losers, National University of Science and Technology (Nust), beating them 1-0 to claim the bronze medal.

"We competed well though most of the players were new on this big stage. I am proud of their endurance and they have helped to raise the GZU flag higher," said GZU head coach Ishmael Mahachi.

GZU striker Tarshia Mlambo scored eight goals and was among the tournament's golden boot contenders.sports

…sugar producer agrees to pay backdate over $7 million in backdated wages

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Tongaat Hullet Zimbabwe (THZ) has finally agreed on wage increment for Band A and B employees going as far back as April 1, 2017 and has set out a three-month period to pay the US$7.5 million owed to employees, TellZim News has learnt.

Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers Union (ZSMIWU) last weekend announced to its members from Triangle and Hippo Valley estates that Tongaat Hulett had agreed to increase wages as per an arbitration ruling made in workers’ favour of October 18, 2017.

The ruling was made by Justice George Smith and later upheld by Justice Owen Tagu of the High Court of Zimbabwe.

ZSMIWU secretary general, Rtd Major Faster Gono said the sugar company had agreed on a new wage structure of 15 percent increment for Band A employees and 7.5 percent for Band B employees as awarded by Justice Smith.

“Our war is over now! They have agreed on a wage increase as awarded by Justice George Smith last year. The backdated wages will be payable over a period of three months,” said Gono.

The National Employment Council (NEC) for the Sugar Milling Industry notified that the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Services had since published the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“It is hereby notified that the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Services has, in terms of section 80 of the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01], published the Collective Bargaining Agreement set out in the Schedule, which has been registered in terms of section 79 of the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01].”

… those not registered to vote targeted

MUTARE – The Zanu PF cell restructuring exercise reached Mutare on Sunday, with party members who have not yet registered to vote being targeted.

Addressing the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) yesterday before proceeding to a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson, Mike Madiro said the party will compile its own database of members who have registered to vote.

“We received short notice communication from the national commissar that today, there will be a cell-restructuring day. As such, we want you to go back and compile the data of all registered voters. We also need information of our members who have not registered and it must be stated on that list as to why they have failed to register.

“We need to mobilise many people, in 2013 we had 700 000 voters in our province and we won as a result, so we have a lot of work to do,” said Madiro.

He encouraged party members to scale up the recording of voter registration slip serial numbers, saying fears that it was illegal were misplaced.

“Do not be afraid of collecting BVR serial numbers from party members. No one will arrest you for that because we will not be committing a crime against anyone,” Madiro said.

The PEC meeting was briefly halted after Madiro realised the presence of journalists from different media houses.

He then instructed the secretary for security to take out private media journalists out of the venue, but spared those from the State-controlled media.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has always insisted that forcing somebody to reveal his/her BVR slip for the recording of the serial number is illegal.politics

Fear of ‘mabhinya’ deters potential female voter registration, says EJWP

CHIVI – People in Ngundu are living in intense fear following several reports of violent criminals roaming the environs, leading to prospective female voters choosing not to go to registration centres, TellZim news has learnt.

Recently, police captured self-confessed criminal Charles Matanga Magombedze who had gone on a spate of violent rapes and murders against countless women.

Although he was sentenced to a total of 72 years in prison before being referred to the High Court to face multiple counts of murder, there is still palpable fear in many communities in Chivi district as people believe was not acting alone.

The Economic Justice for Women Project (EJWP) has identified the many reports of marauding robbers, rapists and murderers commonly referred to as ‘mabhinya’ as a setback against efforts to encourage more people, especially women, to go and register to vote.

The organisation is targeting to work with organised groups of sex workers in the area as project ambassadors.

It aims to take a leading role in mobilising community leaders and members in enhancing active participation in electoral processes.

EJWP director, Margaret Mutsamvi told TellZim News that the organisation was facing serious challenges in mobilising people in Chivi particularly women and people with disabilities.

"People in Ngundu are living in fear for ‘mabhinya’ and the rising speculation has kept them afraid. In this regard, the mobilisation process tends to be harder as people cannot freely walk to registration centres.

"Some people now have to accompany their young children to and from school so walking to Chivi Rural District Council offices to register to vote is no longer a priority," Mutsamvi said.

A woman from Chivi South said it was true that freedom in the area had been dealt a blow by the fear of bandits, such that woman would go out only when there is a burning need to do so.

“I am fortunate because I registered to vote long back when all this had not started. Now it’s something else, the environment is different and women are the most affected,” said the woman who requested anonymity.

Zimbabwe Election Commission (Zec) has not yet been able to establish an on-site voter registration kit at Ngundu despite representations by the organisation and other stakeholders in Chivi.

On that issue, Mutsamvi said such a kit would help much in efforts to improve voter registration figures in a constituency that has emerged as being among those with the least number of registered voters so far in Masvingo province.

She said it was high time women, rural women more so, realised their importance and used their numerical advantage over men to register to vote in their thousands so that their concerns can stand a better chance of being heard.

“There is need to continue developing the capacity of rural as well as other groups of marginalised women to take part in the informed selection of political leaders,” she said.

She said the group was running another mobilisation project in Beitbridge targeting people with disabilities while seeking to enhance their active participation in electoral processes.

ZYMCCC urges govt to implement favorable SMEs policies

The tsotso stove initiative

Zvishavane – Zimbabwe Youths Movement Combating Climate Change (ZYMCCC) has called on government to implement favourable Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) policies to support new developmental initiatives in the business sector.

ZYMCCC executive director, Saddam Mapundu said government must come up with non-returnable capital injections to help facilitate the growth of new business initiatives.

ZYMCCC foundation has come up with the tsotso stove project and other sustainable waste management initiatives.

The group looks forward to enabling women to join the initiative and promoting the business around communities as part of efforts to help curb deforestation and air pollution.

“We appreciate the youth loans that are being offered by the government to help young entrepreneurs grow but for startups, I call upon government to implement favorable policies to help in the growth of such SMEs. We wish to access non-returnable capital policies, financial packages and free co-working space.

“I am happy the tsotso stove project has been accepted by the community especially in wards around Zvishavane. Most people particularly women have been impressed by the stove’s effectiveness so we have partnered a United States-based organisation called SUN 24 which intends to train women from these communities to join in production process,” said Mapundu.

The organisation’s vision of empowering youth to solve various challenges in communities through voluntary work seems to be making a difference.

“I urge more youths to take part in solving problems and developing their communities as these projects go a long way in making a difference and eradicating unemployment among youths.

ZYMCCC member Sharif Kasimu said the organisation could do more with better funding and better equipment.

“The major problem we still have is lack of funding. So the best way local established businesses and government could support youth initiatives is by giving them their free co-working space where they can work with minimal worries over rentals. We want to do exhibitions in order to help young entrepreneurs integrate with different stakeholders,” said Kasimu.

Dream Zimbabwe urges youths to participate in elections

Wilson Chivhanga

Tiyani Hahlani

MASVINGO – Dream Zimbabwe (DZ) executive director Wilson Chivhanga has challenged the youths in Zimbabwe to participate in the upcoming harmonised elections as they cannot really expect to be leaders of a tomorrow they did not map.

DZ is a youth-led organisation founded in 2017 to enhance youth participation in democratic processes through promoting democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation.

Chivhanga said young people should participate by voting as well as by standing as candidates in the general elections if they are to claim their rightful stake in the affairs of the country.

“Youths cannot be the leaders of a tomorrow which they did not help shape. They can lead today by making sure that they participate in events which will shape the future,” said Chivhanga.

He also said youths tend to overlook the importance of voting and do not know that their voice is important.

He said democracy could not work without the active participation of the majority of citizens, with history having shown that a collective youth vote could actually sway an election.

Chivhanga also said he would like to partner TellZim News to have interviews and guest columns and offer public debates on youth participation in elections.

He also highlighted reasons why youths do not participate in elections, saying young people have largely been neglected in decision-making processes hence they do not see the need to participate.

He said there was a cultural phenomenon that elders should lead, adding up to discriminatory primary election entry requirements by parties and financial constraints as some of the reasons why young people are not dominant in political offices.

“Because of the financial constraints, the youth do not have a fair chance in politics as they will be doing something else to survive. Young people, as a result, find themselves playing second fiddle to dominant political players who are often older, more resourced persons,” said Chivhanga.

In Masvingo, the trend shows that many Members of Parliament (MPs) are older men, mostly in their late 40s going upwards but their campaign managers are mostly much younger men who, if better resourced, would be MPs themselves.

Mwenezi Zanu PF Cllr begs for MDC Alliance ticket

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Incumbent Zanu PF Ward 2 councillor, Munyaradzi Sigogo whom TellZim News reported early last year to be under fire from party members over his then alleged association with Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, is said to be pleading with MDC Alliance to allow him to contest the ward again under Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) ticket.

Contacted for a comment, Sigogo rubbished the reports about his alleged association with opposition politics.

“I am not begging for the MDC Alliance’s support but the truth of the matter is that what you are hearing are just rumours. So far I am yet to decide on anything. In the event that I have made a choice, I will advise you,” said Sigogo.

Sources, however, said Sigogo had already forwarded his Curriculum Virtue (CV) to the MDC Alliance provincial team for consideration so that he contests the ward under the ZimPF ticket with the backing of the alliance.

Zanu PF district coordinator who is also the provincial secretary for transport and welfare, Rennias Muchoko also confirmed that they had not received Sigogo’s CV because he was no longer a member of the party.

He said the ostracised councillor ceased to be a member of the ruling party long back because he shifted his political allegiance from Zanu PF to ZimPF.

ZimPF is a led by Agrippa Mutambara and is part of the seven-member MDC Alliance which is expected lock horns with Zanu PF as a united front come the general election later this year.

Though Zanu PF has several aspiring candidates the ward, the MDC-T is said to have reserved the council seat for its district youth secretary, Lovemore Mapuranga whom it wants to contest under the MDC Alliance banner.

ACCZ gives Mnangagwa right to kill, forgive

Tobias Zunguzira speaks during the meeting

Itai Muzondo Midlands Bureau

GWERU – The Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) recently made a bizarre claim to the effect that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had the right to kill and to forgive anyone who poses a threat to Zanu PF’s political interests.

Speaking during a national executive induction meeting held at Midlands Hotel recently, ACCZ vice president Tobias Zunguzira said the President Mnangagwa must be allowed free reign just as the Biblical King David.

“As churches, we should know that David had the power to kill and power to forgive. As churches, we mustn’t then take that privilege from our leaders saying it jeopardises free and fair elections. Let the President do all it takes to safeguard his legacy,” Zunguzira said.

Also in attendance was Johannes Ndanga who said churches must champion unity behind political leaders of the day in line with Biblical traditions.

“We took an opportunity to make our committee aware that we will be supporting Mnangagwa in the forthcoming election. We think all the journeying he is doing to market Zimbabwe is a good job and should be supported and applauded.

“Romans Chapter 13 says be under your leadership as they were put there by God. It goes on to say ‘those who are on the throne’ and that tells us no one else can come. Some say we do hero-worshiping but it’s not that as we simply do what is directly quoted from the Bible. In Shona, the closure reads, ‘varipo ivavo’ and not ‘vasipo ivavo’,” Ndaga said.

Known for his fawning attitude towards Zanu PF leaders, Ndanga late last year declared that former president Robert Mugabe would never be removed from power and would rule till death.

Mutomani publicly declares interests in Chiredzi North

…Bhila attacked for ‘lying’ to the people

Anesushe Mamhute

CHIREDZI – Aspiring Zanu PF Chiredzi North Member of Parliament (MP) Roy Bhila was last week criticised for allegedly basing his campaign on falsehoods, with people disputing his claim that he initiated a fish farming project in Chehondo Dam which he helped to repair.

Speaking at a Food and Nutrition Committee (FNC) meeting in Ward 20, Zanu PF district chairperson, Susan Mhandu said Bhila could not be trusted with power.

“He was chased away from Ward 29 where he deceived people that residents in Ward 20 were already fishing from Chehondo Dam which he claimed was his idea but in actual fact, the dam is dry.

“We want people like John Mutomani who, when he was asked for cement to repair Cheshanga Dam, provided but did not promise what he could not give,” Mhandu.

John Mutomana, who has publicly declared his interest in the constituency, is expected to square it off against other competitors like Bhila, Ronald Ndava and current MP, Robert Mukwena.

One villager told TellZim News he was optimistic Mutomani will make a better MP than Mukwena whom he said had nothing to show for his time in the national assembly.

Mutomani’s continued support in Chiredzi communities in the course of his Lowveld Environmental Awareness Programme (LEAP) has brought him close to people especially in Chiredzi North where he has revived many dams to improve the lives of those in rural areas.
