Chiredzi forex dealer faints after losing $750 to conman

CHIREDZI – A female foreign currency dealer reportedly fell into a coma for around 45 minutes after noticing that a conman had defrauded her of US$900 in bond notes which he took away from her in exchange for fake US$750 bank notes.
People who attended to the distressed woman had to carry her into her car where they poured several litres of water on her in desperate attempts to help bring her back to consciousness.
The deceptive transaction happened outside an Edgars outlet where the trader, Perpetual Chotavengwa usually plies her trade.
“Yes it’s true that I was robbed in daylight. There is this guy, I can’t even remember his face but was formally dressed who came to sell his US$750 at 20 percent interest. I gave him my $900 bond and I later noticed that I was tricked when he was long gone,” said Chotovengwa.
She said the fraudster misrepresented himself to make it appear like he had just got the money from a Mukuru branch close by.
An eye witness said the fraudster walked out of an Electrosales shop counting his fake dollars, flaunting them wisely to entice unsuspecting traders.
The witness said the deeply shocked Chotovengwa fainted after finding out that she had been sold a dummy.
“It’s very sad. The woman was robbed $900 in bond notes after she unknowingly traded them for fake US dollar bills. She only realised her mistake while doing a recount of the notes. The money left a colour on her fingers but the conman was already gone by then,” said the eye witness.local

Sikhala disrupts Gutu High elective AGM over SDC chairmanship

Job Sikhala

TellZim Reporter

GUTU – Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) secretary for mobilisation, Job Sikhala allegedly disrupted a Gutu High School Development Committee (SDC) elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) elections when it became apparent he was not going to win a position he wanted, TellZim News has learnt.
Many influential individuals with political connections including businessman Titus Madzingo and Sikhala were contesting for the post of SDC chair and they had reportedly brought hired supporters to vote for them.
A source at Gutu High who spoke to TellZim News on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident saying the school was now making consultations to reschedule the elections.
“There were many influential people contesting for the position. Some brought people who even do not have children at the school to vote for them and it was those people who booed one of the candidates. So those who felt they had not yet mobilised enough support to win called for the elections to be postponed and disrupted the proceedings in the process,” said the source.
In a phone interview with TellZim News, Sikhala said the reason for the postponement was failure to produce audited statements for the year 2017/2018 by the current SDC.
“I am sure whoever is saying that is from the current SDC because the decision to postpone was unanimous. The current SDC failed to show parents audited statements for the year 2017-18,” Sikhala said.
Another source at the school, however, dismissed the audited statements version of the story saying parents had already been told about the issue prior to the meeting.
“Parents were told before the meeting that external auditors had not yet submitted the reports and all parents agreed to continue with the elections in the expectation that the statements would be available at the next meeting.
“The AGM was being held earlier than usual so the issue of audited reports was not the problem and was not the reason for the disruption,” the source said.local

GWERU – People’s Rainbow Coalition (PRC) President Joyce Mujuru last week said Robert Mugabe might have been toppled from power but the new administration remains his sparkling mirror image.
Mujuru made the comments while addressing People’s Rainbow Coalition (PRC) aspiring candidates at Midlands Hotel last week.
She warned the people of Zimbabwe not to be fooled by messages of a ‘new dispensation’ saying it was all empty talk as the systems created by former president Mugabe were still intact.
“I stand before you in an era where Mugabe is no longer President. There are however still issues on the means by which the new President came about.
“The removal of Mugabe did not result in the elimination of his regime’s systems that we have been fighting all along as the opposition. We still have a dishonorable system of governance which the PRC is here to remove,” Mujuru said.
She encouraged the gathered aspiring candidates to remain focused in order to lead the coalition to victory.
“If we are to win this election as PRC, we should remain focused and determined to hold the nation together when we become the ruling party. Whatever you do as an individual, be a nation builder. Let’s therefore commit ourselves to serving the people of Zimbabwe,” Mujuru said.
She praised the recent meeting held by different opposition political actors in Cape Town, South Africa, to try and achieve unity ahead of the elections, saying she learnt a lot at the gathering.
“We are different groupings aiming to travel one road. Having different policies, backgrounds and many other differences is the reason we had to seek advice from our friends on how to create a bond through the election and, more so, when we get into government,” Mujuru said.politics

GWERU – The government has put in place stringent surveillance mechanisms to make sure hospitals comply with the directive to offer free medical services to senior citizens, pregnant women and minors under five years of age.
This was said by the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Owen Ncube, as he welcomed First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa at Gweru Provincial Hospital a fortnight ago.
“It is disappointing to report that some of health institutions in the province were not complying with the government’s free user fee for children aged five and below, senior citizens and pregnant women.
“In light of this, we have put in place a monitoring and evaluation system through the Joint Operations Command (JOC) to closely monitor this non-adherence to policy,” Ncube said.
Ncube also urged the government to lift a ban on the recruitment of health officers saying some institutions were incapacitated.
He pointed out that new medical equipment procured by the new government for public health institutions should see hospitals offering better services.local

ZSMIWU rejoices in the departure of Madungwe

Freedom Madungwe

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers Union (ZSMIWU) is celebrating the departure of its president, Freedom Madungwe, after the High Court ruled that he was procedurally removed from his position.
There had been bad blood between Madungwe and much of the union membership which accused him of selling out their interests to the employer, Tongaat Hulett.
Madungwe was then dismissed from ZSMIWU in October 2016 by the executive committee but he filed a labour court application challenging the decision, arguing that those who had fired him were no longer members of the union as they had lost their jobs with Tongaat Hulett.
ZSMIWU, however, filed its own application with the High Court to bar him from accessing the organisation’s bank accounts. The court advised the union to form an interim executive pending a final ruling on the matter.
On January 26 this year, the High Court delivered its ruling on the matter, endorsing the expulsion of Madungwe from the union.
The judgement on Case Number HC10757/16 which cites Madungwe was the 1st respondent, was delivered by Justice Tawanda Chitapi.
“It is hereby declared that first respondent was duly expelled as a member of the Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers Union (ZSMIWU) on the 8th of October 2016,” reads part of the judgement.
The court also ordered Madungwe to pay the costs of the application on high scale which is estimated to about over US$20 000.
“First respondent be and is hereby ordered to pay the costs of this application on the high scale as between client and attorney.
“It is hereby declared that the leadership of the Union presently consists of five National Executive Committee members namely Lucia Chirhele, Brawl Chikandiwa, Nokuthula Dube, Tavonga Vandirayi and Godfrey Katerere,” it reads.
The interim committee which had been running ZSMIWU was subsequently dissolved on February 15 to pave way for the set National Executive Committee.local

GWERU – Giant abrasives manufacturer Caridorn Abrasives (Pvt) Ltd is set to resume operations and create many jobs, TellZim News has learnt.
Speaking at the familiarisation tour of the company last week, the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Owen Ncube said many investors had shown interest in resuscitating the abrasive and refractory supplier.
“Our expectation is that you reopen as soon as possible since we have many investors who want to come and do business in our wonderful and peaceful province of Midlands,” said Ncube.
He further said his office had submitted recommendations to the Minister of Industry and Commerce to seek the revival of the company.
“My office’s submission to the minister of industry and commerce recommending the revival of this company should very soon bring investors once they have been identified.
“It is also government’s expectation that when you resume operations, you employ more than you retrenched,” Ncube said.
Caridorn Abrasives is the only company that manufactured abrasives like sandpaper before it shut down due to liquidity problems.
Its products were critical for the country’s mining industry.business

A filthy market in the light industrial areas

Anesushe Mamhute

CHIREDZI – The Environmental Management Agency (Ema) has slapped Chiredzi Town Council with a US$10 000 ticket over its failure to manage large mounds of garbage that are now common at all market places especially in the light industrial area popularly known as ‘Kumagarage’.
Various stakeholders visited the vegetable market this week to assess the garbage situation which is getting no better despite many complaints being made.
Council housing department officials failed to show up at the meeting, with town secretary Charles Muchatukwa saying he did not turn up because he expected the issue to be handled by the District Administrator (DA) Lovemore Chisema.
“It was being handled by the District Administrator so I thought everything was under control,” said Muchatukwa.
Ema district officer, Peter Mugodhi slammed council for making no effort to improve environmental hygiene in the area.
“The place needs bins and is very smelly. Toilets are very close to the market and with no toilet dip, there is a health hazard for many people,” said Mugodhi
Councillor Obert Ngwenya of Ward 2 also attacked council for failing to improve service delivery.
“There is so much incompetence in council so I urge residents to stand up and demand accountability,” said Ngwenya.
Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (CHRRA) chairperson Jonathan Mupamombe threatened to organise peaceful demonstrations against deteriorating service delivery.
“I am applying for a right for residents to hold peaceful demonstrations against council. It is yet again the ratepayer who will be made to settle that ticket and we are not at all pleased,” said Mupamombe.local

GUTU – Football in Chatsworth will finally benefit in a big way following the formation of Zero One One Football Club (FC), a Chatsworth-based outfit being sponsored by Sammy Washington Washaya.
Zero One One will be playing in the Zifa Eastern Region Division One League this 2018 season.
In an interview with TellZim News, Zero One One spokesperson Lovemore Mujere said the sponsor had decided to fund a fully-fledged Chatsworth-based football outfit as a way of ploughing back into the community.
The club conducted trials in Chatsworth and has already played a friendly match with Masvingo Pirates FC.
“Washaya decided to sponsor a fully-fledged football outfit as a way of ploughing back to the community.
“We have engaged Morris Mukwiti to assist us with the technical aspects of the game. This is one of the many ways that the sponsor has been exploring in trying to give back to the community where his roots lie,” said Mujere.
Speaking to TellZim News, Mukwiti said the club has conducted trials with some local players and those from outside Chatsworth.
“We are still conducting trials for those coming outside the Chatsworth community. We need players who have played in division one and the Premier Soccer League because our main objective is to be promoted into topflight football in two years to come. We are appealing to the entire community to support the team,” Mukwiti said.sport

BIKITA – Monalisa Mapfunde, of Mondo village under Chief Mazungunye, who was doing grade two at Chivaka Primary, last week drowned in Chivaka River reportedly after sneaking out of school bounds.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident and urged parents to warn their children against crossing flooded rivers.
“Parents should warn their children not to cross rivers alone and teachers should make sure pupils do not sneak out of school,” said Mazula.
It is said Monalisa sneaked out of school around 10: 00 hrs to go home alone. She tried to cross Chivaka River and was swept away.
Around 17: 00 hrs, Monalisa’s mother Sylvia Tizwi (34) started to look for her child who had unusually failed to come back home on time.
With the help of fellow villagers, Tizwi found the body of her child along the river the next morning.local
