The clinic being built by the SDA in Sogwala

GWERU – The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church is constructing two state-of-the-art clinics in Midlands and Masvingo provinces as part of efforts to help spread health services to disadvantaged communities.
The clinics, which are located in rural communities of Lower Gwelo and Chiredzi, are expected to open doors next month.
In an interview with TellZim News, SDA Central Zimbabwe Conference president Jothamu Manyakara said the projects were a response to the needs of the communities.
“The SDA church noticed the need for a health facility in Gatawa in Lower Gwelo, which is under Chief Sogwala and Masivamile in Chiredzi, and we decided to respond. We are constructing the clinics because it is our duty as the church to meet the people’s needs.
“We expect the clinics to be finished and become fully furnished by the end of October and to start operating in November. These clinics will emphasise prayer because we believe healing comes from God,” he said.
Manyakara said both clinics were constructed under a programme called ‘Zunde’ which combines preaching and community service.
“Through our Zunde programme, we received contributions from all our churches. Church members with building and carpentry knowledge donated their skills. The local communities were also very much involved in the projects as they assisted in various ways such as brick moulding,” said Manyakara.
Sogwala Clinic project chairperson, Mandlenkosi Moyo said locals were touched by the church’s efforts to improve their lives as they will no longer be travelling 11 km for basic medical services.
“We are happy to finally have a clinic nearby. People in our community walk about 11 km to the nearest clinic which also serves a very large number of people. We look forward to its quick completion,” he said.
Recently, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa commissioned a ward at built by the SDA and donated to Masvingo General Hospital.health

GWERU – The Prison Ministries International (PMI) Zimbabwe academy 17th graduation ceremony was held recently at Gweru Trinity Presbyterian Church with the idea of advancing the goal of rehabilitation of ex-prisoners and prevent recidivism.
Graduates were drawn from four provinces namely Masvingo, Midlands, Mashonaland West and Manicaland.
The occasion was graced by dignitaries including Councillor Farai Mudza who represented City of Gweru Mayor Charles Chikozho, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Midlands’ Superintendent Godfrey Gohodzi, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Midlands Assistant Inspector Trymore Mushope, former presiding Bishop Rev Sithole and the executive assistant to PMI president, Edwin Gumbura, who is also the director of training for the academy.
PMI national coordinator Martin Mugandani said the organisation, which started in 2011 with its first class at Pan African Christian College in Harare, has 900 trained personnel and 180 ordained civilian chaplains from the four ordinations held so far.
He said PMI had a memorandum of understanding with ZRP, ZPCS and ZNA which mandated it to complement government’s efforts to reduce crime and recidivism.
“Upon release, some prisoners face discrimination and that is when PMI intervenes to provide exit support and bridge the gap by conducting peace circles between offenders and family members affected by the crime,” said Mugandani.
Speaking on behalf of ZPCS Commissioner General Rtd Maj Gen Paradzai Zimondi, Supt Gohodzi said PMI was doing a good rehabilitative job.
“We now have somewhere to refer inmates unlike in the past when there were no bridges to cross over to the family. I would like to thank Prison Ministries International for being a short in the arm,” said Supt Gohodzi.
Six students gave testimony on how the training had made a difference on them, among them Ruben Chigumira who served a 22 years 10 months and 13 days sentence at Chikurubi.
He said he never allowed prison life to get into him because he had received Jesus Christ, adding that to him, the encounter with PMI was an answered prayer.
“I had fasted and prayed for five days asking God to get pastors to prison to continue with the work I had started of converting inmates,” said Chigumira.
Gweru, Bulawayo and Kwekwe stations were awarded chapter status to exercise a certain level of autonomy.
Certified correctional care churches were AFM Amazing Grace Zvishavane, PAOZ Zvishavane, Holy Spirit Apostolic Church Zvishavane, Family Fellowship Mission Zvishavane, Church of Christ Marodera, Balm of Gilead Bulawayo, Higher Grace International Ministries Bulawayo, Trinity Presbyterian Church Gweru, AFM Chitungwiza East, Harvest House International Gweru, Nations For Christ Kadoma and Word Alive Restoration Ministries Redcliff, Anglican Church Kadoma, Life and Liberty Churches International, Victory Fellowship Bulawayo and Great Commission Marondera.local

ZVISHAVANE – A 23-year-old appeared in the Zvishavane Magistrates Court charged with contravening Section 168 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 after he allegedly stole a bank card and went on a reckless spending spree.
Knowledge Kapitapita of Lot 2, Makwasha, appeared before magistrate Archie Wochiunga for allegedly stealing Uian Hlekiso’s bank card and pin number.
The court heard that the two met at Batanani Beer Hall on the September 25 and Kapitapita asked Hlekiso to buy him a beer, and she gave him her bank card and pin number.
Kapitapita bought the beer and then pretended to be answering a call before vanishing without informing the 46-year-old Hlekiso of where he was going.
Hlekiso then realised that Kapitapi was using her card through transaction text messages that were being sent to her phone.
Kapitapita made transactions at Chicken Inn, Amazon, Pizza Inn, Ok Supermarket and other supermarkets and it all reflected on Hlekiso’s phone, forcing her to engage her bank to block the card.
The total spending by Kapitapita amounted to US$3 411 but only US$40 was recovered at the time of his arrest.
Kapitapita pleaded not guilty and is expected to be back in court on the October 11 for continuation of trial.

…appeal over turned

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Lovemore Chuma, a village head who was early this year convicted by Chief Chitanga’s court for engaging in an adulterous affair with the wife of his younger cousin brother, had his sentence appeal rejected by Mwenezi magistrate Honest Musiiwa who ruled in the complaint’s favour.
Earlier this year, Chuma, who is Mushayavanhu village head, was ordered by the traditional court to pay four beasts as compensation for having an affair with the wife of his namesake cousin, Lovemore Chuma MB.
Through his defence lawyer Joseph Maweni, Chuma admitted the offence but argued that the chief’s judgement was too harsh.
On his part, Chuma confessed that they indeed engaged in an illicit affair with Chuma MB’s wife.
“We had sexual intercourse once and it is Chuma MB’s wife who approached me because she was the first to send provocative messages to my cell phone,” said Chuma.
Giving her side of the story in court, Chuma MB’s wife said the whole affair was exposed when the child who was born from the illicit affair had gone for several weeks with the umbilical cord still wet.
The court further heard that, after realising that the family was about to go on a witch-hunt to find out the cause of the child’s problem, Chuma MB’s wife spilt the beans and revealed that the child belonged to Chuma.
On his part, Chuma MB said despite the fact that his brother was guilty he did not show any remorse.
“Mukoma hunhu hwenyu hunonyadzisa munototaura kuti mukadzi wangu agara achizikanwa nenyaya yekuhura muraini. Makamitisa mukadzi wangu dzoke zve monditsvagira lawyer futi…kana ndatokunzwirai tsitsi ndingatoti mubhadhare mombe nhatu,” said Chuma MB.
Musiiwa sternly reprimanded Chuma and ordered him to pay the complainant three beasts as per his request.local

GWERU – A 15-year-old Lower Gweru boy recently appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire facing three counts of sodomy.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal and ethical reasons, pleaded not guilty to the charges claiming that he was playing ‘chikudo’  with the nine-year-old victim.
He claimed there was no penetration and he was remanded out of custody under the care of his grandfather to October 23 for trial.
The court heard that on January 12, 2017, the accused visited the minor at his homestead in Madhuveko Village in Lower Gweru and asked if he could accompany him to a neighbour’s homestead.
While in the bush along the way, they started to engage in playful wrestling (chikudo) and the accused allegedly took advantage of that to sodomise the complainant before threatening him with unspecified action if he reported the matter to anyone.
On the following day, the accused met the complainant in the veld and sodomised him again and on the third incident, they were caught by a passerby who took the alleged offender to the police.
However, the accused said that they were just playing and turning each other up and down so when the passersby found him on top of the younger boy, he assumed that he was molesting him.

GWERU – Tafadzwa Mugarisanwa (26) of House number 1398/17 Mbizo, Kwekwe was recently slapped with a 23-year-jail term over 43 counts of armed robbery of which nine counts were withdrawn after witnesses failed to provide satisfactory testimonies, and the robber was acquitted on six others.
Mugarisanwa pleaded not guilty to all charges but the court found him guilty and Gweru magistrate Solomon Jenya sentenced him to 23 years in jail.
Appearing for the State, Robert Ndlala told the court that the accused was linked to a group of armed robbers that are still at large.
The gang terrorised business people, stealing electrical gadgets in Zhombe, Kwekwe and Silobela between the months of February and March 2015.
Ndlala said the modus operandi of the gang involved producing a pistol to force shopkeepers to hand over their electrical gadget such as radios, laptops and DVD players as well as groceries.
It was heard that the accused was caught after stealing submersible pumps at a local school where he was performing a community service for another case not counted on the 43 counts.
The police then tracked him and arrested him, leading to the revelation of the 43 counts.

SHURUGWI – The old Shona adage that ‘chisi hachieri musi wacharimwa’ proved to be accurate last week when a Shurugwi man appeared in court in connection with a murder case he allegedly committed in 2011.
Twenty-nine-year-old Brighton Mugwisi, from Mugwisi village appeared before High Court judge Francis Bere facing murder charges.
The court heard that Mugwisi and Lawrence Chaitezvi were drinking at Shumba business centre in Shurugwi, in November 2011.
The two started quarrelling and Chaitezvi spilled Mugwisi’s beer in the process.
Mugwisi then struck Chaitezvi with a beer bottle and the victim later died due to bleeding.
Justice Bere, who was sitting with assessors Wellington Matemba and Chipo Baye, convicted Mugwisi with a charge of culpable homicide and sentenced him to seven years in prison.
Two years of the sentence were set aside on condition that he does not commit a similar crime within the next five years.
Mugwisi, who was appearing in his third and final circuit, was represented by Antony Chihiya of Makonese, Chambati and Mataka Attorneys.

MWENEZI – The Shona truism that goes ‘mhosva hairovi’ proved to be up to the point in the Mwenezi Magistrates Court last week when two men were arraigned before the court for the rape they allegedly committed between 2006 to 2008.
Appearing before magistrate Honest Musiiwa, the two accused, Zogi Matsonga (57) and Edmore Mufandaedza (35) who are both from Zvinonyanya village under Chief Neshuro, were not formally charged with rape as defined in section 65 (1) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Chapter 9:23 but were remanded in custody.
Matsonga and Mufandaedza are facing charges of having separately and on different occasions raped a 42-year-old woman who resides from the same village with them.
The court heard that sometime between 2006 and 2008, while the complaint was coming from the garden, Matsonga ambushed the victim and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
Mufandaedza also ambushed the complaint, who was coming from the borehole, and raped her.
Despite the fact that the offences were allegedly committed on different occasions sometime between 2006 and 2008, it came to light this year.
According to State papers the complaint reported the matter in Bulawayo this year. Willard Chasi appeared for the State.local

Mnangagwa why not be like Bismarck?

0

Passmore Kuzipa

I am a born free, born well after 1980, but I have managed to read a few history books so far and I am still reading.
From what I read so far, I appreciate the role played by Emmerson Dambudzo (ED) Mnangagwa our Vice President (VP) during the liberation war and after Independence of April 18, 1980.
Stories like the bombing of a Rhodesian train is one thing I would forever respect about Mnangagwa especially considering that he was indeed too aggressive. I wonder though where this kind of aggressiveness in Mnangagwa has vanished to, lately.
But there are things I do not envy about Mnangagwa like his alleged involvement in Gukurahundi where over 20 000 civilians were said to have been killed in Matebeleland and Midlands provinces. I will not concentrate much on the vices because Mnangagwa is also human and prone to mistakes.
Recent events happening in Zanu PF make me wonder if Mnangagwa still commands any respect in the ruling party. A whole VP being publicly embarrassed, with the First Lady Grace Mugabe saying the Midlands godfather and indeed the potential successor to Mugabe is nothing.
The developments in Zanu PF have now reached boiling point and it seems like Mnangagwa is hanging by a thread considering how his rivals, Generation 40 (G40) are rabidly pushing for his ouster on allegations that he wants to topple President Robert Mugabe.
Mnangagwa has been accused of plotting to topple Mugabe from office since 2015, just a few months after being appointed vice president following the ouster of Joice Mujuru. Interestingly, Mujuru was kicked out on the same allegations that are now being levelled against the Midlands godfather and Mnangagwa also played a part in that fiasco. In fact, his hands are not clean when it comes to issues to do with Mujuru’s unjust ouster from Zanu PF.
Mujuru has since formed her political party, National People’s Party (NPP).
But since Mnangagwa started being accused of wanting to remove Mugabe from office, he has remained quiet, a strategy which irks many of his supporters from Team Lacoste faction.
Member of Parliament Sarah Mahoka once likened Mnangagwa to a duck and Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Mandiitawepi Chimene publicly called the VP to order.
While some of Mangagwa’s supporters defend his quietness, I now strongly feel that they now feel they are getting an overdose of it. They feel he should at least say something now that many people have been shown the red card for publicly supporting his ambitions to take over from Mugabe.
Former minister and war veterans leader Christopher Mutsvangwa and his peers Douglas Mahiya, Victor Matemadanda, Godfrey Tsenengamu and just recently Energy Mutodi are some of the victims of the purges.
When Mnangagwa was believed to have said something in support of his people of Masvingo at a memorial service of the late national heroine Shuvai Mahofa a fortnight ago, there was a glimmer of hope, with supporters saying the VP had gathered courage at long last.
The celebrations were, however, short lived as Mnangagwa later claimed that he was misquoted by the media though G40 would have none of that as they had found more ammunition with which to attack him
From ‘command ugly culture’ insults to accusations of nepotism and cruelty, Mnangagwa has experienced it all but has chosen to remain mum.
His supporters seem to mistake this quietness as a strategy when in actual fact it is nowhere near being strategic. Though I hardly agree with Professor Jonathan Moyo, the vocal Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education on many things, I tend to believe he was on point when he alleged that Mnangagwa was selfish; he is too shy to be vocal in defence of those who support him. Here are the reasons why I believe Mnangagwa is selfish; going back to the 2004 Tsholotsho Declaration where a number of Zanu provincial chairpersons were booted out and suspended for supporting him to be the VP of this country.
People like Prof Moyo and Masvingo Urban legislator Daniel Shumba were part of Tsholotsho and were not spared too, probably that is the reason the duo is said to be viciously opposed to Mnangagwa’s ascendancy.
Fast forward to 2013, provincial chairpersons like Lovemore Matuke (Masvingo) and Mike Madiro (Manicaland) who were alleged to be Mnangagwa loyalists were suspended for re-admitting former Mnangagwa allies like Shumba back into the party.
In  2016, Mutsvanga and other war vets were kicked out of Zanu PF and, just recently, Mutodi of the famous ‘I am the boss’ mug was kicked out for supporting Mnangagwa. People were expecting Mnangagwa to defend his supporters but he turned a blind eye to them and, at one point, distanced himself from the war vets who were calling for him to replace Mugabe.
Earlier this week, Mugabe further punished Mnangagwa’s backers when he reshuffled the cabinet and axed them or gave them less influential portfolios. Former Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa is the joke of the year after Mugabe created a consolation ministry (cyber security, detention and mitigation) for him, while Tshinga Dube, Prisca Mupfumira and Faber Chidaririkire (all Team Lacoste faction members) were relieved of their duties.
Again Mnangagwa did nothing despite that he too lost the Justice ministry to CIO director –general Happyton Bonyongwe.
We have seen Grace Mugabe publicly supporting G40 while boldly claiming that there was nothing like G40 but only Team Lacoste. Even President Mugabe has shown a lot of affection for G40 – Saviour Kasukuwere was given a vote of no confidence by nine provinces but he was protected.
When Mnangagwa allegedly said Masvingo should not be threatened by those who claim that it causes disunity in the party, we thought the VP eventually got the courage to support his people yet he quickly backtracked and organised a press conference after G40 had cranked up the heat against him.
But as things look right now, I don’t think Mnangagwa’s presser was useful in any way because G40 will continue to accuse him and base their arguments on previous media reports. In addition, Mnangagwa’s decision to bar private media was a big mistake. In fact, it was a sign that even if he is to become President, he could ban all the private media in the country. Mind you the man is said to be shrewd and ruthless.
I think it is high time Mnangagwa should go back and read a few history books. Maybe I can give him one written by Herbert Peacock as well so that he can read a bit about the policies of the former German Chancellor Ottovon Bismarck. I have no doubt that this is the best time to implement one or two policies from this great Statesman.
Bismarck was one person who wholly believed in diplomacy as the best way to solve issues. We have witnessed Mnangagwa on several times trying to implement these. He tried to be diplomatic and kept quiet even when he was expected to say something in his defence. Mnangagwa must have mastered this diplomacy well from Bismarck but it seems he has taken it too far.
Bismarck however said, “When diplomacy fails then confrontation will certainly be the way to go”. We have read about Bismarck winning wars between 1864 and 1879 each time he decide to go confrontational. Mnangagwa lacks the wisdom and courage to confront when diplomacy fails.
G40 has been attacking him for so long while he remains quiet. Quiet diplomacy seems not to work anymore especially with the latest developments in Zanu PF. We have witnessed President Mugabe refusing to shake his hand when he returned from South Africa last week and from the video footage the nonagenarian seemed furious.
Earlier, Acting President Phelekezela Mphoko issued a press statement attacking Mnangagwa of pushing a factional agenda.
Well, Cde Ngwena as many supporters affectionately call you, it is no more time for quiet diplomacy but confrontation would work best now. The speech at Mahofa’s memorial was on point. It raised hope and confidence of your supporters and people are expecting more of such a speech in future.
There was no need to tone down from the speed you made at Mahofa’s memorial. Mnangagwa’s supporters now expect him to fight back by publicly defending those who support him just like what Grace does to G40.
Masvingo and Midlands have been criticised and attacked by Grace for supporting Mnangagwa to take over from her husband. Mnangagwa should stand up and defend Masvingo, Midlands and indeed anyone who supports him from any part of the country.
From the look of things quiet diplomacy is not taking him anywhere but confrontational might make his opponents think twice. When I say confrontational I am not referring to violent conduct but publicly defending those who support you just like what Grace is doing.
Mnangagwa should stamp authority and be blunt especially in politburo. Mujuru tried quiet diplomacy until she got fired therefore it’s crystal clear that the approach will not work for Mnangagwa as well. In fact Mnangagwa is on the edge now and if he remains quiet surely he will go the same way as Mujuru. Mark my words!!!politics
