…team adds four points out of possible six

ZVISHAVANE – As Shabanie Mine FC performance on the field continues to fluctuate, football punters are left unsure as to whether the team will be able to keep its spot in the Premier Soccer league (PSL).
Bvaru Bvaru recently managed to partially heal the broken hearts of its fans by defeating Ngezi Platinum 1-0 at Maglas Stadium before drawing 1-1 with Chapungu at Ascot Stadium in Gweru.
The team has been a pale shadow of itself, having last won a league match during the first round of matches. This was then followed by a string of poor results which shattered the hopes of the Bvaru Bvaru faithful.
After the win against Ngezi Platinum, the town of Zvishavane was painted maroon as jubilant Bvaru fans went around celebrating wildly.
“We are proud that we managed to stop a strong team at Maglas. We never thought that we were going to win because we have not been playing well lately,” said a jubilant Luckson Ncube.
Bvaru Bvaru coach Takesure Chiragwi seems to be relishing the moment with some caution though, given the huge task that still lies ahead in the fight to remain in the PSL.
“Fans are our 12th man; they are our strength and I am very happy with their support. We are one family so we fight for one cause and we don’t have to fight each other or to point fingers when things don’t go our way,” said Chiragwi.sport

MUTARE – The seemingly unstoppable Mutare City Rovers stretched their unbeaten run to five games last week after humbling Mtoko FC by a 5-2 at Sakubva Stadium.
The Gusha Boys, as they are affectionately known, boosted their confidence during the match through early goals from Stephen Sibanda and Evans Chikwaikwai.
Chikwaikwai then scored the second and fourth goals while Mutoko FC had its first goal from Kudzai Savanhu during the first half. Reason Tizora then capitalised from a rebound and scored the second goal for the visitors.
Speaking after the game, Mutoko FC gaffer Abraham Makwarimba said his side had made costly blunders.
“We made some mistakes that our opponents utilised but I am not happy with the second goal. That was a clear offside and as a result it affected my boys,” said Makwarimba.
Mutare City coach Kennedy Kachara was happy with the win but urged his side not to be carried away with the win as there was still a job to be done.
“This was a good game for us. We deserved to win but we don’t have to be carried away. Next week, we will be away in Gutu so we need our maximum concentration on the game,” said Kachara.
By the time of writing, 11 games remained, with log leaders Mutare City leading by 45 points, while second placed Tenax had 41 points. Buffaloes were trailing behind with 39 points and Mucheke Pirates were on fourth position with 37 points.sport

MWENEZI – Catholics from as far as the Midlands province and other areas last Saturday converged at Sacred Heart High School to witness the ordaining of Dereck Makena and Keith Zivanai who recently completed their brotherhood courses.
The colourful ceremony was attended by dignitaries like the dean of Southern Deanery’s Father Samson Mutsvanga, many priests and church representatives from different corners of the country.
It was also graced by Roman Catholic Masvingo Dioceses bishop Sekuru Michael Bhasera.
Part of the vow made by brothers Makena and Zivanai to show their commitment to lead brotherhood lives as per God’s will reads:
“I…consecrate myself to God…. I commit myself to live as a brother of Christ, deeply united with him in unceasing prayer, as a brother to everyone…. I make to God the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience according to the Rule of life of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart for life—.”
Speaking at the occasion and on behalf of Bishop Sekuru Bhasera, Fr Mutsvanga expressed gratitude over the sterling work being done by Brothers of Sacred Heart across Masvingo province and beyond.

All citizens have a right to petition parliament, says SAPST

MASVINGO – The Institute of Community Development in Zimbabwe (ICODZim) and the Southern Africa Parliamentary Support Trust (SAPST) last week held a training workshop in Masvingo to improve public knowledge on the role of parliament and parliamentary engagement.
The training was part of a country-wide programme touching on such critical issues as petition writing and other topical areas around the Biometric Voter Registration System (BVR).
Among other things, discussions evolved around such areas as how to write petitions but there were also discussions on the roles of Members of Parliament (MPs).
SAPST programmes manager Henry Ndlovu told participants that it was the constitutional right of all citizens to petition parliament and raise motions on issues affecting their constituencies.
“Every citizen has a right to petition parliament to consider any matter within its authority including the enactment or repeal of legislation. You don’t need anybody’s authority to submit a petition to parliament.
SAPST chairperson, Vivian Mashavave addressed the roles of MPs, saying there was a general misconception about that matter.
“Members of Parliament represent interests of the electorate in Parliament. They raise motions on issues affecting their constituencies during question and answer sessions and report back to their constituencies,” said Mashavave.
On BVR, it was heard that the new system, if properly implemented, would prevent duplicate registrations.
“BVR systems have gained favour because of a number of merits. They prevent duplicate registrations and are easy to use when registering and identifying voters. They are also easily used to search and analyse data,” said Mashavave.local

Mugabe ready to punish Masvingo

President Robert Mugabe

Upenyu Chaota

President Robert Mugabe has publicly expressed his bitterness over allegations that ice cream from his Gushungo Dairy company was used to poison Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa at a rally in Gwanda last month, and has demanded that those who peddled the false accusations be brought to book.
The rumours are said to have originated at the funeral wake of former Minister of State Shuvai Mahofa when Walter Mzembi and other legislators were chased away for allegedly bringing poison from Gushungo Dairy.
Zanu PF provincial chairman Ezra Chadzamira, Paul Mangagwa and Gutu Central legislator Lovemore Matuke, who is also the national chief whip, were accused of creating the rumours as they allegedly were the most vocal at the funeral.
Mugabe has however came out fighting, insisting that those who falsely accused the first family and its Gushungo Dairy of ‘witchcraft’ should be brought to book and explain their hidden motive, leaving the trio of Chadzamira, Matuke and Mangwana in a fix.
The three, who are believed to be Team Lacoste – a faction which supports Mnangagwa to take over from Mugabe, are most likely to be kicked out of Zanu PF before year end, according to reliable sources in the ruling party.
“Chadzamira might lose the chairmanship for good now; mind you he was once suspended few years ago and only re-elected not so long ago. But he will not go alone this time around but with Mangwana and Matuke. They were too vocal at Mahofa’s funeral saying she was poisoned by (Generation 40) G40 faction,” said a top Zanu PF official.
The witchcraft accusations reached a boiling point at the funeral of Mahofa, Mnangagwa’s strong ally, where youths burst into songs accusing the first family and G40 for the sudden death of Mahofa.
However, this did not go well with Mugabe and his wife Grace, who insisted that those who were spread such malicious accusations be punished.
“The President and the first lady have their share of insults, several ministers and others had also these accusations, completely false, completely malicious and emanating from the same sources.
“Tinoda kuti vazvisvipe vange vachiita izvi, maprovince mazviri kubuda ndiwo atiri kukumbirisa kuti vanatsoona kuti ndivanani, zviri kubva papi uye zvichiitirwei? Zviregedzwe. Pachivanhu tinoti svipirai pasi. Hatichazviita,” said Mugabe.
Mugabe also subtly accused the late national hero Eddison Zvobgo of tribalism, a problem which he indicated was still prevalent among people from Masvingo and the Midlands provinces.
Some people in Masvingo however described the claims by Mugabe that Zvobgo was tribalist as nonsensical and said it was mere hatred.
When contacted for comment, Chadzamira said they held a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) as well as Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to deliberate on the issue last week but no one said anything about the whole witchcraft accusations.
“We had a PCC and PEC to discuss that matter and everyone was given the platform to name people who are said to have accused the President of witchcraft. All the senior members of the party attended that meeting and no one said anything except for Paul Chimedza and Denford Masiya who said they were harassed at Mahofa’s funeral.
“We gave everyone the opportunity to point the people responsible for making the witchcraft accusations to the President and First Family but no one said anything and now there are others who run to the media to try and appear holier than thou.
“I know the person saying that is Daniel Shumba but he did not say anything in the PCC. We will not be deterred by such people and we stand by our President,” fumed Chadzamira.
“The President called for unity in the party and we will not glorify this cheap talk. No one in my executive ever accused the President of witchcraft and we had a PCC where that issue was on the agenda but Shumba kept quiet.
“Masvingo will always remain loyal to the President and the first family. We disassociate ourselves from such rumours,” said Chadzamira.
Shumba, however, came out guns blazing saying if Chadzamira was as innocent as he claimed to be, then he had nothing to fear.
“Chadzamira anovhundukei. Let the facts speak for themselves. He wants to show loyalty to the President today yet he wants to remove him with his Lacoste faction.
“Chadzamira is a reactionary man. He lost primaries in 2008 when he was still with the MDC-T party and he bribed his way to the top of the province in Zanu PF. I am not on the same level with him as a man, legislatively and academically,” said Shumba.
Meanwhile, Gutu West legislator Tongai Muzenda is said to be the top contender to take over the position of Minister of State for Provincial Affairs following the death of Mahofa.
Muzenda, who is son to the late Vice President Simon Muzenda, was once a deputy minister before he was relieved off the duty following allegations of him being linked to the former Vice President Joice Mujuru who was later fired from both party and government.
Muzenda was later cleared of any wrong doing and Mugabe might appoint him to the powerful position in the province.
“Muzenda is the front at the moment; he has the highest chances of landing that position. What is certain is that position will never be given to anyone from Team Lacoste faction,” another top Zanu PF official said.top news

TSCZ engages journalists in fight against road carnage

…drivers urged to take full responsibility

Clever Taperamoyo

HARARE – The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) last week organised a road safety workshop for journalists from diverse media houses as part of efforts to promote safer driving habits.
The workshop was held at Rainbow Towers where it was agreed that media are critical stakeholders in raising awareness on road carnage as well as in advocacy work against the problem.
In his speech, TSCZ information and communication manager Tatenda Chinoda said it was sad that people were quick to blame everything and everyone else except human error when an accident occurs.
“When a road traffic crash occurs or is reported in the news, people tend to point fingers at the police, the roads, Zinara, municipal traffic police, tyres, stray animals, evils spirits – black spot mentality, the other driver, pedestrians or anything else in between. It is time for drivers to take full responsibility for their actions on the road if we are to stop the road carnage,” said Chinoda
He also said some of the main causes of road carnages included drinking and driving, speeding, tyre bursts, and errors made on overtaking.
“What is missing in the majority of our road users is road safety culture which ensures that we are always conscious about risks inherent in using the road,” he said.
Chinoda also challenged the media to report factually and objectively about road crashes so that the public can have a better understanding of how to better make use to the country’s roads.
According to the ZRP Traffic National Branch statistics, 96 percent of the 2016 festive season road traffic crashes were attributed to human error while the remaining four percent was caused by vehicle defects.
It is also said in the 692 fatal crashes that were recorded in between January and July this year, 930 people were killed while 4222 were injured.local

Tongaat Hullet exports 18 000 tons of sugar to America

Tongaat Hullet executives Chinhuru and Mhere (in company T-shirt) hand over a prize to Mr Gwatirera(holding an envelope) who was named the best farmer in Chipiwa
…targets 600 000 tons by 2019

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Tongaat Hullet Zimbabwe (THZ) has encouraged sugarcane farmers to improve yields, saying the export market was expanding as the company was now set to export 18 00 tons of processed sugar to the United States.
Many small scale sugarcane farmers in the Lowveld are contracted to the sugar giant which is the sole miller and buyer of all cane.
Addressing farmers at a field day organised by the Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station (ZSAES) in Chipiwa plot 276 K Block in Mkwasine, THZ executive responsible for operations, Aiden Mhere said the sugar industry accounted for 5 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He said the company expected to produce a record 600 000 tons of sugar in the 2018-2019 season from the current 350-400 000 so that American demand can be consistently met.
“Our international markets are increasing. We supply half of the sugar consumed in Botswana and Namibia. We received a quota to supply America with 18 000 tons of sugar as from this year. We also export our sugar to Europe,” said Mhere.
He said production in Chipiwa had dropped from 114 tons per hectare in 1994 to current average yields of 37 tons per hectare.
“You should convert farming into a business regardless of land size. An efficiently organised farmer with only 10 hectares can produce more than the one with 20 hectares but disorganised.
“In China, someone with a one hectare plot is a rich farmer. Others have one acre plots and 0.5 hectare plots but they use their land intensively for better output,” said Mhere.
Chipiwa was first developed by THZ and government soon after Independence and was housing 191 sugarcane farmers who were using overhead irrigation.
About 1 910 hectares of land was developed with each farmer getting 10 hectares and they were performing better than those with bigger portions of land.
Recently, Canelands Trust injected about US$12 million to rehabilitate Chipiwa as irrigation pipes were being stolen.
Farmers there are currently using flood irrigation and their output, which had gone down to a measly 37 tons per hectare in 2010, rose to 76 tons per hectare in 2014.local

Homeless children qualify for national Starbrite

Homeless children playing mbira

MASVINGO – Mentored from the streets of Masvingo by passionate music lecturers Phenias Magwati and Danmore Jamanda, some homeless children living on the streets of Masvingo are aiming higher than what their lives can ordinarily offer.
A few months ago, the children decided to take up music lessons offered by the African Musical Art Charitable Centre (AMACC) as a life skill and they recently exceeded even their own expectations by qualifying for the Starbrite national competitions.
Magwati told TellZim News the homeless children had made enormous progress in their new-found career, a clear demonstration that no tragic social background can forever keep people down if they have some determination.
“The guys sailed through at the Starbrite provincial auditions and that is proof that they have immense potential. This also shows that with hard work, people can do great things for the rehabilitation of such less fortunate members of our society as homeless children,” said Magwati.
He said he was looking forward to members of the public coming on board to support the children in any way so that their stay at the competitions will be comfortable.
“We haven’t secured the resources needed to transport the children and house them at the competitions but we are very confident that well-wishers will come and help just as they donated the musical instruments we are using,” said Magwati.entertainment

Roads levy yields results for Masvingo

Machako cuts the ribbon while Mayor Fidze and other people look on during the commissioning of the road equipment

Clever Taperamoyo

MASVINGO – Director in the office of the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Kudakwashe Machako on Monday commissioned earthmoving equipment procured by City of Masvingo using funds raised through the roads levy.
The levy was introduced in 2015 amid strong criticism and objections from residents who felt hard pressed by the city council. The levy ran for six months at a cost of US$3 per household.
Addressing city of Masvingo councillors, management, employees and residents who gathered at the Civic Centre to witness the event, Machako praised residents for their cooperation which made it possible for the equipment to be bought.
“Infrastructure development and maintenance is critical for development and we support the close working relationship between council and residents as it made it possible for these vehicles to be bought,” Machako said.
He said it was out of that realisation that council was trying to improve the condition of roads which are taking a battering as a result of poor funding from the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (Zinara) and poor council revenue inflows.
City of Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze also thanked residents for paying towards the levy despite the difficult economic conditions they face.
“We understand the difficulties that our residents face. As council, we would like to thank them for their support which allowed council to buy this equipment,” Fidze said.
Council says more than US$489 000 was raised through the levy and the equipment bought are a motorised grader, front end loader, tipper and a refuse compactor at a total value of US$425 123.
A recent study of the city’s roads under National Road Condition Survey revealed that the city had a road network of 257 km, only four kilometres of which is in good condition,.
A total of 153 km of the road network is considered to be in fair condition while the rest is in poor condition.local

Zanu PF youths warn war veterans against de-campaigning Mugabe

…we will come down hard on Mutsvangwa

Moses Ziyambi

MASVINGO – A group of Zanu PF youths today, September 15, held a press conference at Chevron Hotel where they denounced Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairperson Chris Mutsvangwa, warning that they would soon deal with him decisively should he continue undermining the first family.
Some of the youths present at the press conference were Talent Chivange of the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC), Zanu PF youth league member Persie Mukwata, National Youth Service Graduates Association (NYSGA) deputy provincial commander Willie Mwarakuza, Chamber of SMEs secretary general Biggie Kwangwa and student leader Mike Taderera.
The group, believed to be strongly linked to the G40 faction in Zanu PF’s vicious succession wars, said Mutsvangwa, ZNLWA secretary general Victor Matemadanda, spokesperson Douglas Mahiya and political commissar Francis Nhando were masquerading to make it appear like they had broad support from war veterans when, in actual fact, they had no support at all.
The youths read out a prepared statement which, among many other things, accused Mutsvangwa of harbouring ‘imperialist tendencies.’
“We as the revolutionary youth of Zimbabwe, condemn in the strongest possible terms utterances by one Mr Mutsvangwa to the effect that he and his so-called A Team will be out to de-campaign our iconic president and revolutionary President Mugabe and Zanu PF in the forthcoming watershed election. Before we go any further, we would like to categorically state that Mutsvangwa’s imperialist tendencies will be resisted heavily by the young people,” Chivange said.
Mutsvangwa was earlier this week quoted as saying the war veterans, whom he termed the ‘A Team’, would campaign for anyone else other than Zanu PF if Mugabe did not immediately call an extra-ordinary congress to elect his successor.
This, Mutsvangwa said, would deal a blow to the G40 faction which he claimed had hijacked the party and wanted to smuggle in Defence Minister Sidney Sekeramayi through the back door to succeed Mugabe at the expense of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“We know that Mutsvangwa is part of an organised syndicate which is bent on destabilising the peace that our mothers and fathers fought for and our peace as a country. As young progressive youths, we will not sit back and watch. I think we are 67 percent of the total population and it is such a disgrace for Mutsvangwa and company to think that young people of this country are that feeble to leave him and his four colleagues to continue saying their rubbish,” said Chivange.
Responding to questions from the floor on how exactly they were going to ‘deal’ with Mutsvangwa, the youths said they will not engage violence but may ask that he and his group be arrested.
“We thank the President and amai vedu venyika Dr Grace Mugabe and all her efforts to empower the women of this beautiful nation. May it be known that it is our duty as young people to safeguard President Mugabe and the first family’s legacy and we cannot afford to let condescending wafflers like Mutsvangwa and company to destroy such a towering legacy.”news
