MWENEZI – A group of about 40 men broke into the bedroom of a 64-year-old man whom they manhandled, severely bashed and forced to join their circumcision camp, the Mwenezi Magistrates Court heard last week.
It was also heard that the gang destroyed property worth US$1 872 in the process.
The State, however, found reasonable grounds to charge only Chenjerai Chivarange (38), of Chiwarure village two under Chief Maranda, for malicious damage to property but he pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before magistrate Honest Musiiwa.
Giving his side of the story in court, the complainant, Lysias Hlaisi of the same village said Chivarange stormed his place in the company of about 40 men.
“Vakauya pamba pangu varikuma 40. Gumi vandinonyatsokuziva ndivo vaindirova uye ndivo vandaka reporter kumapurisa…ndakarobweswa apa vaiva vakandibatirana vamwe vachindidhonza-dhonza zvombo zvangu. Mushure mokundirova uye mokuputsa property yangu vakaenda neni kumurundu (circumcision school).
“Ndakanochekwa ikoko haaa manje mubedroom hazvichaendeki futi. Ndakatozoita zvokutiza ndisati ndapedza course ndokupona kwandakaita. Chakazondirwadza futi ndochokuti ndiri ku murundu iko, sezvo Chivarange aive umwe wamacommander aipota achidzoka kumba kwangu achitorana futi nemukadzi wangu. Mhosva akamboitenda pakutanga akandiripa mombe mbiri asi gare gare akadzoka otora futi mombe dziya,” Hlaisi said.
Appearing for the State, Willard Chasi told the court that one day in September 2010 at around 17:00 hrs, Chivarange arrived at Hlaisi’s homestead with about 20 men, not 40 as was claimed by the complainant.
They wanted to take Hlaisi to a male circumcision camp at Tundunyi Mountain but Hlaisi locked himself into his bedroom hut and refused to open when the group arrived.
Chivarange allegedly took an axe that was on the yard and broke Hlaisi’s bedroom door into three pieces.
He entered the bedroom and went on rampage destroying property worth US$1 872. Some of the property that was destroyed include solar panels, a bed, set of cups and radios.
A police report was made leading to Chivarange’s arrest. The trial was due to continue by the time of going to print.local

Honey producers set to commercialise

MWENEZI – Following the unveiling of loans from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development, more than 1000 bee farmers are eager to improve honey production.
In their tour of the districts, officials in the ministry are urging other existing small businesses to register so as to access OFID loans.
The Mwenezi leg of the workshops was held recently and it saw participants calling for the use of modern beehives to replace the primitive equipment currently being used by many.
“In Mwenezi district we are about 200 farmers who are engaging in bee keeping. The current beehives, referred to as the Kenyan top bar type, cannot uplift us as they can only hold four to five kgs of honey for a period of six months. As a result, the honey being produced by many is for family consumption alone.
“It would be good if the ministry to equipped bee farmers with imported beehives that can accommodate 40 to 50 kgs of honey for a period of six months. That way, honey farmers can produce for commercial purposes,” said one participant in his contribution.
Speaking on behalf of Permanent Secretary Dr Evelyn Ndlovu, the ministry’s provincial head, Munyaradzi Rubaya said plans are afoot for the purchase of a honey processing machine.
Rubaya said as long as bee farmers put in place their business proposals, the importation of beehives for commercial production will be facilitated by the ministry.
The OFID loans which are set to benefit individuals and cooperatives with registered businesses have no collateral constraints as long as it can be verified that the businesses does exist.
It is hoped the loans are going to boost many business including district ranchers who have been struggling due to perennial droughts.business

…as Chicken Slice opens branch in town

Chicken Slice has been involved with many local authorities over the past few years of its existence but never before has it dealt with a more efficiently-run council than City of Masvingo, company chairperson Tawanda Mutyebere has said.
The business mogul was speaking at the official opening of Chicken Slice’s newest branch in Masvingo, being its first shop in the province and its 12th branch countrywide.
Mutyebere, who was accompanied by his family and friends as well as by company management and staff to mark the grand entry of his popular fast food chain into his hometown, praised council for providing all the necessary support to expedite work on the shop.
“We took our time working on this shop but we knew we were going to open. I have a special word for the people of Masvingo because you received us here with open arms; from the mayor, town clerk to all council departments. Of all the city councils we have worked with, Masvingo is the best.
“There were no challenges at all from the time we were doing the construction work up to this very day. Things moved efficiently and we got all the cooperation we expected from different council departments. I must say that you have the best mayor in the country. We are business people, we don’t do politics but we do give credit where it is due,” said Mutyebere, referring to City of Masvingo mayor Hubert Fidze who was also in attendance.
He said there was need for other councils in the country to learn from how things were being done in Masvingo so as to attract investment and create jobs.
Mutyebere pleaded with authorities at all levels of government to remove unnecessary red tape that impedes growth of the national economy.
“We are appealing to the government for ease of doing business in our country because right now there are a lot of hindrances to overcome when you try to do something. We need to promote our own business people in Zimbabwe and we also need to quicken up the licensing services. In most cases, you spend several months waiting to get just a licence for you to be able to begin operating,” said Mutyebere.
In his speech, Fidze, who later did the ribbon cutting, welcomed the Chicken Slice brand and thanked its management for having faith in the local market.
“We are pleased with this form of investment and the recognition that Chicken Slice has given our city by opening this branch. We will continue to work hard to improve service delivery so that conditions can become even friendlier to business,” said Fidze.
The new shop, located opposite N. Richards Cash & Carry at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Ave and Robert Mugabe Rd, was described as the best of all Chicken Slice shops, boasting glittering exterior and interior designs that are complemented by top quality furnishings. business

Sanctions Mutendi, Mutendi High Head

…Mutendi High School aims another 100 percent pass rate

TellZim Reporter

Tucked deep in the lush greens surrounding Mbungo Estate,  on the red soils of the spacious savanna terrain off the Masvingo – Mutare highway, Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi’s Mutendi High School has yet again proved why it is one of the most sought after mission boarding schools in the country.
The school is famed not only for its outstanding performance on the academic front, but for its strict adherence to Christian discipline too, as guided by the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) doctrine and as taught by the late Reverend Samuel Mutendi, who is the founder of the church.
That firm observance of decency has led to remarkable academic achievements for the school, and has molded a pupil of intellectual excellence and of strong moral grounding.
In June 2017, a total of 20 students sat for their ‘A’ level exams in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, accounting and business studies – and all of them passed with flying colours with some 6 As and 10 Bs being recorded.
A total of 10 students, four of them being female, sat for maths, physics and chemistry; the difficult STEM subjects that are dreaded by many.
Most remarkable is the story of Mitchel Garise, a partially visually-impaired pupil who sat for accounts, geography and business studies and obtained 13 points (2 As and a C).
In other areas, Mutendi High School is making enormous progress to develop its facilities, with a well-designed two-storey new girls hostel nearing completion.
A massive paving project of the school which started a few years ago has also transformed the surroundings to a more refreshing look.
In extra curricula activities, the school continues to register momentum in such sporting disciplines as football, netball and baseball. The school’s under 16 baseball boys and under 20/under16 girls softball teams qualified for the national competitions that are being held on October 4 – 7 in Harare and Kadoma.
The famous Mutendi brass band also captivated crowds at the National Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival (NASSAF) games held at the National Sports Stadium last week.education

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, government officials, parents and school heads from neighbouring schools.
The event lived to its billing with exquisite and energetic displays from the school drama and dance group.
Speaking at the event, School Development Committee (SDC) chairperson Maxwell Makurumure thanked parents for the support which enabled the school to build a good administration block and a new ablution block for ECD pupils.
He thanked CBZ, CABS, Jobcel and the Chivhu business community for donations that made the ceremony possible.
Chikomba District Schools Inspector (DSI) Emmanuel Kwenda, in a speech read on his behalf, praised the efforts made by the school for development.

CHIVHU – A 17-year-old girl from Chinembiri village under Chief Mutekedza who has been in the courts facing indecent assault charges for sexually abusing her 11-year-old sister has been slapped with a five year jail term wholly suspended because of the age factor.
The girl pleaded guilty to the charges and she was convicted by magistrate Fadzi Mtombeni.
“Ndaive ndakugara ndichinzwa kuda kurara nemurume saka taizoisana zvigunwe kuti tipedze chikara chaindibata nekuti tese taive tajaira kugara tichirarwa nevakomana vedu (I would always feel like sleeping with men so to make it up, we would use our fingers to satisfy each other,” she told the court.
The State, led by Nicholas Mabvongodze found out that sometime in June 2017, the accused would have sexual intercourse with her boyfriend in the presence of her younger sister.
She later on became so bold that she would allow her boyfriend to have sex with her young sister in her presence.
It was also discovered that the boyfriend then started to bring along his own friend so that he too could have sex with the complainant in their presence.
When they were alone, the sisters would caress each other and they would insert fingers into each other’s private parts for sexual pleasure until an unidentified person who knew of what was happening synonymously called the police and revealed what was happening.local

MASVINGO – Chiramwiwa Katiyo, a teacher at Mazambara Secondary School on Monday afternoon attempted to commit suicide by swallowing an overdose of 20 unidentified tablets reportedly to protest against her husband’s alleged infidelity.
A source privy to the incident said Katiyo was rushed to Zimuto Clinic but was later transferred to Masvingo General Hospital after the school senior teacher found her struggling to breathe while frothing on the mouth.
“She called the senior teacher and told her that she was worried about the welfare of her kids and from the way she was saying it, the senior teacher sensed danger and went to investigate,” said the source.
Circumstances leading to the attempted suicide were not clear by the time of going to print but it is alleged that she had talked to her husband over the phone and it is suspected that their conversation was caustic.
It is alleged that she was having marital problems with his husband, a police officer in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Masvingo.
It is further alleged that Katiyo’s husband was having an affair with his female workmate and had taken away all bank cards, leaving Katiyo broke and distressed.
“Her husband lied to him that he was working in Beitbridge for some days yet in actual fact he was at his girlfriend’s place right here in Masvingo. She soon found out that her husband had been lying to her and could not take it anymore,” said another source.local

MP Chakona donates used underwear to Zaka villagers

Paradzai Chakona

… slams critics of the donation

Upenyu Chaota

ZAKA – Zaka Central legislator Paradzai Chakona recently donated bales of clothes that included used socks and underwear to people of his constituency.
Importation of second hand clothes is illegal but some ordinary people who have been surviving on selling such wares for a long time have resorted to smuggling.
Some of the bales are confiscated by the police and forfeited to the State, but many of them find their way into the hands of leaders who dish them out for political expediency.
In Zaka Central, Chakona donated the second hand clothes that he reportedly sourced from higher officials in Harare.
When contacted for comment, Chakona downplayed criticism of the donations saying his role as legislator was to source aid for his people.
“It is my job to look after people in my constituency. I look for donations from well-wishers and come to help my people. Could that be an offence?
“I cannot tell you the source of my donations because that is my secret. I sourced second hand clothes from donors and they gave me quite a number of items which I donated to wards that are most affected by poverty. No one was forced to accept the items. Only those who were willing accepted the clothes,” said Chakona.
One ward chairperson whose area received the second hand underwear and socks said he was shocked by the contents of the bales.
“How can a whole honourable donate second hand underwear to his people? Giving second hand underwear is degrading enough and this will not work well for Chakona in the coming election. He has to apologise,” said the chairperson.
Using second hand clothes, especially underwear, is widely considered to be unhygienic.top news

Two cars burnt at Riverton Academy

The two vehicles are seen being consumed by fire at Riverton Academy

TellZim Reporter

MASVINGO – A joyous moment between parents and their children at Riverton Academy boarding school last week turned ugly when two parents who had visited for a speech and prize giving day left the place poorer after their cars were gutted by fire.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Charity  Mazula confirmed the incident but could not give further details saying investigations were still in progress.
One parent, according to sources, wanted to treat her child to some grilled steak so she lit a gas cylinder to heat a braai stand.
In an unprecedented turn of events, some flames flew onto nearby dry grass and the fire spread rapidly spread to the nearby parking lot, sparking a fierce conflagration which burnt two luxurious cars to shells.
The vehicles belonged to other parents who were sharing some quality family moments with their children, and there was pandemonium as people tried in vain to douse the raging flames.
Sources said the accident was caused by one Nyarai Nyadenga from Harare and she managed to get her own car off harm’s way before the fire consumed the other two unfortunate vehicles.top news
