GWERU – The Gweru Catholic community was last week hit by a devastating blow following the death of diocese leader, Bishop Xavier Munyongani.
He died on October 15 at the age of 67.
A Catholic Social Communication communiqué in possession of TellZim News says Bishop Munyongani died at Avenues Clinic in Harare where he had been admitted for a week.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Bishop Xavier Munyongani. He was admitted in Avenues Hospital for the past week,” reads the communiqué.
Born January 1, 1950 at Mutero Mission in Masvingo, Bishop Munyongani was ordained Priest of Gwelo on August 20 1977. He was later ordained Bishop of Gweru on September 14, 2013 after the retirement of Bishop (now Emeritus) Martin Munyanyi.
Catholic social communication director Fr Reki Mashayamombe’s mobile however went unanswered when TellZim News tried to contact him for more details.
TellZim News is however informed that Gweru St Theresa’s Cathedral will host a farewell mass for him on Thursday October 19 before congregants go for an all-night vigil to be held at Driefontein on the same day.
He will be buried at Driefontein Mission on October 20.local
