ZVISHAVANE – Rising defending midfielder Gerald Takwara looks set to leave the country for the ABSA Premiership after impressing in the trials at Ajax Cape Town, and negotiations are said to be going on well.
Takwara has been on the radar of many South African clubs and he missed the last two league matches as he was undergoing assessment at the Urban Warriors.
The 23-year old player emerged as one of the rising stars in the country while he was playing for Tsholotsho FC before moving to FC Platinum in July 2015. He was the nucleus of Zimbabwe’s midfield during the Warriors’ successful Cosafa campaign held in South Africa in July.
FC Platinum spokesperson Chido Chizondo confirmed that they were willing to let go of one of their best players provided a lucrative deal is placed on the table by Ajax Cape Town who are said to have been impressed by the player’s elegant displays.
“We have opened negotiations with Ajax after they assessed him and they are convinced they want his services. We value him very much so he might go or he might not go,” said Chizondo.
Pure Platinum have already lost two of their top players to South African teams with Talent Chawapiwa, who joined Baroka FC last month on a three-year deal, being the latest.
Chawapiwa caught the eyes of the South Africans with his good performance at Cosafa while Walter Musona joined Polokwane City earlier on during the January transfer window.
Takwara missed what could possibly have been his last match for the platinum miners when they won 1-0 against Triangle FC at Gibbo Stadium last weekend.sport

MASVINGO – The Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (TUZ) last week completed an Information Communication Technology (ICT) training programme at Rukovo High School in Masvingo North, part of a series of nation-wide workshops the union is been doing.
In June, TUZ trained trained 88 teachers in Chiredzi in computer skills so as to capacitate teachers to discharge their duties more efficiently now that the new curricula is being implemented.
At Rukovo, 65 teachers from Masvingo North constituency received their certificates at the end of the course.
Acting chairperson for TUZ in Masvingo province Livison Maunganidze urged teachers in the to take advantage of the training programme to improve their computer knowledge.
“We encourage every teacher in the province to take advantage of these courses and come in their numbers for training because the world is changing fast. Teachers should have computer knowledge as that would be to their benefit,” Maunganidze said.
Provincial manager Barbara Muza also urged teachers to avail themselves for training as the knowledge gained was critical for their work.
“As TUZ, we came up with this idea of training teachers regardless of their affiliations to other organisations because our aim is the end product; the child. There is no Zimta child, PTUZ child or TUZ child in the classroom but only an innocent child,” said Muza.local

Masvingo – A Reformed Church University (RCU) driver, Pardon Muzondo, who in February this year escaped death by a whisker after a Toyota Hilux he was driving veered off the road and rammed into a tree has released a gospel album dedicated to his miraculous survival.

“I was trying to avoid a head on collision with a pirating Toyota FunCargo. I still cannot believe that God protected me from that accident so I decided to praise him through music”, narrated Muzondo.
Muzondo who never dreamt of becoming a musician released an eight track album called Mwari Muchengeti.
“I got help from Nemanwa guitarist, Austine Magara, Eddy Ngomanyuni, Camera Mugodhi and my elder brother Tawanda Muzondo who is also my manager”, said Muzondo.

Students call for banning of alcohol at colleges

Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO – Students who attended a Christian response to substance abuse workshop at Masvingo Teachers’ College recently called upon authorities to ban alcohol and take stern measures to ensure that illegal drugs do not find their way onto campuses.
The workshop was organised by a group called Focus as a platform for students to interact and share ideas on how to tackle substance abuse at institutions of higher learning.
Participants blamed drug and alcohol abuse on peer pressure and outside influence.
“Many students take drugs because their friends do, so if colleges and universities are cleared of such harmful substances, most of students will be spared,” said one student.
Local lawyer, Chakabuda Foroma urged students to engage their authorities at school to explore the feasibility of their proposals at local level since alcohol consumption was legally permissible for adults.
“Find the cause of drug abuse and address that instead of facing the consequences because drug abuse is a criminal offence,” Foroma also advised.
Motivational speaker, Dr Fredrick Kasese said before succumbing to peer pressure, students must use the power of their minds to make meaningful decisions.
“There are about 400 chemicals in mbanje so when you smoke that, you are taking all of those chemicals into your body. Can you imagine the harm that you are causing to your body?” said Dr Kasese.
Focus national co-odinator Tivakudze Zhou said his organisation wished to go around the country holding similar workshops.
So far, workshops of that nature have been held in Mutare and Harare with one more scheduled to be held at Masvingo Polytechnic in September.education

Midlands school girls get free sanitary wear

GWERU – Love Trust Zimbabwe is implementing a project aimed at assisting poor rural school girls to remain in class during their periods by availing free sanitary wear to them.
Over the last school term, the Gweru community-based humanitarian organisation assisted 600 female pupils to get sanitary pads and plans are being made to expand the project next term.
The organisation has also distributed bicycles to a number of pupils at Chiwundura Secondary School who have to travel several kilometres to school every day and has also assisted others with stationary.
Love Trust Zimbabwe director Ian Mathole said the organisation was concerned with the general welfare of pupils in poor communities, and wanted to give them not only emergency aid but life skills too.
“We want to lessen the problems that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds encounter daily in their desire to get an education. We are particularly worried that basic items like sanitary wear are not affordable for most rural girls and they are missing school because of that,” said Mathole.
He also revealed that the organisation had run a successful project called ‘Back to School’ which focused on following young school dropouts and giving them the necessary support so that they could go back to school.
“We are also forming active support groups to provide the backing that is needed by beneficiaries. We thank the Ministry of Education, Nac (National Aids Council) and other individuals for supporting us,” said Mathole.local
