Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)’s Professor Munyaradzi Mawere will be among the six Africans selected to visit the African Studies Association (ASA) 2017 presidential fellowship in the American city of Chicago from November 11-24, 2017.
ASA was founded in 1957 in North America to promote Africa in all academic disciplines.
Prof Mawere teaches at the Simon Muzenda School of Arts, Culture and Heritage Studies at Great Zimbabwe University in Zimbabwe.
“I have been chosen to present my work at the ASA 2017 presidential fellowship in America. It is a good thing to have your work get recognised across the world and be rewarded for it. I have a passion in writing and researching and I always keep myself busy.
“I am going to have the privilege of visiting renowned universities like Harvard, Chicago, Yale, Trinity, Boston, Princeton, Kansas and Connecticut among others,” said Prof Mawere.
He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa; three Masters Degrees namely: Master of Arts Degree in Social Anthropology (Passed with Distinction); Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy; Master of Arts Degree in Development Studies; a BA (Hons) Degree in Philosophy, and a number of certificates across disciplines.
Before joining GZU, Prof Mawere was a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and at Universidade Pedagogica in Mozambique, where he has also worked in different capacities as a senior lecturer, assistant research director, postgraduate coordinator, and professor.
He is an author of more than 50 books and over 200 book chapters and peer-reviewed academic journals with a focus on Africa straddling towards areas of poverty and development, African philosophy, society and culture, democracy, human rights, politics of food production, humanitarianism and civil society organisations, indigenous knowledge systems, urban anthropology, existential anthropology, cultural philosophy, environmental anthropology, society and politics, decoloniality and African studies.
Prof Mawere’s research acumen has earned him prestigious international honours such as the Wenner-Gren Research Fellowship (2011-2014) and recently (2017), the much coveted Association of African Studies (ASA) Presidential Fellowship Award.
He is a Senior Editorial Board Member and peer-reviewer for a number of publishing houses and journals, and has been involved in several research projects across disciplines.education,topnews
