THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) in Masvingo got a sigh of relief after receiving a new fleet of vehicles that include four new trucks, a lorry and a bus on January 11 from government to aid their operations.
ZPCS Masvingo Public Relations Officer, Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Stanslous Sanike confirmed having received the batch of four pick-up trucks, a lorry and a bus, that they distributed to other correctional services centres in the province.
“Masvingo province so far has received four pick-up trucks, one bus and a lorry. The bus will be used by Masvingo provincial headquarters to ferry members of the ZPCS to and from work whereas the truck was allocated to the health department, while Chiredzi prison, Bikita and Mwenezi satellite prisons received one truck each,” said Sanike.
He thanked government for the development saying they are looking forward for more vehicles so that transport challenges will be eased.
“We are looking forward to receiving more vehicles as management seeks to ease transport woes and improve conditions of service for members. As a province we are grateful to ZPCS and the government of Zimbabwe,” said Sanike.
ZPCS Masvingo province had just one security truck that was down with mechanical faults for months leaving authorities at Mutimurefu Prisons with no other choice but to resort to public transport or the use of vehicles owned by ZPCS officers.
ZPCS has 46 facilities spread across the country and only 11 vehicles were servicing them all, with one vehicle per province while Harare had only two vehicles servicing six prisons.
Nationaly, the total number of vehicles given to ZPCS was 25 Ford Ranger single-cab trucks, 14 Toyota GD6 4X4 pickups, 13 five-tonne trucks, seven NP300 pick-up trucks and two 64-seater buses.
