SHURUGWI – A 64-year-old woman is luck to be alive after was set ablaze by his former co-tenant who doused her with petrol before lighting her with matches after denying him beer on credit and asking for her money the patron owed her.
Midland Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and urged the public to desist from resorting to violence to solve disputes
“We are appealing to members of the public not to resort to violence when in dispute. We also urge members of the public to have proper business structures and to regularize their businesses.” Said Mahoko.
Circumstances are that the frightening incident occurred on June 15 2023 around 1400 hours at Montdor North, Bonsor, Shurugwi.
The suspect Evans Chirawo Matagu, a man, aged 38 went to the victim’s residence where she operates a shebeen. He asked for beer on credit and the complainant refused saying he already owed her some money.
The suspect got furious and set her on fire. Other shebeen patrons managed to put out the fire, saving her life.
The victim was rushed to Shurugwi hospital after sustaining serious burns.
Police has since arrested the suspect who later appeared in court and was remanded in custody at the Shurugwi Magistrate Courts for continuation of trial.
