                                                                Johannes Mupisa

Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – Budding
novelist and poet, Johannes Mike Mupisa has had his poems featured in the
recently published 485-page fourth volume of the continent-wide anthology which
incorporates works of 154 African poets from over 30 African countries.
The
Best ‘New’ African Poets 2018 Anthology, which was published by Mwanaka Media
and Publishing Pvt Ltd, has poems in various indigenous languages from such
countries as Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon.
It
also features translated versions of the same native poems into mainly English and
French and other foreign languages.
The
32-year-old Mupisa last year made headlines after writing a thrilling local
movie, Gehena Harina Moto.
“I
man happy my works have made it into the anthology. Three of my poems in there
are in Shona but I also translated them into English,” said Mupisa.
He
said he was a passionate literary artist with several unpublished works that
would be published once he gets a financial breakthrough.
“My
three poems which feature in the Best ‘New’ African Poets 2018 Anthology are
Shungu dzangu (Cry of the girl child), Afrika Chidadiso and Zimbe mujombo, they
are subject to diverse interpretations depending on the reader’s own
understandings.
“In
Shungu dzangu, the focus is on the predicament of a girl child in face of such
challenges as forced marriage and deprivation. Afrika Chidadiso celebrates the
beauty of Africa while lamenting the corrosive effects corruption. In Zimbe mujombo
explores the capitalist mode of economic areangements and its effects on
society,” said Mupisa.
Other
Zimbabwean writers whose works found their space in the anthology include
award-winning writer and poet Alex Kaposa, Oscar Gwiriri and Chenjerai
Mhondera.
A
product of Midlands State University (MSU), Mupisa has written several Shona
and English poems. He has also co-authored such books as A Practical Approach
to Heritage Studies Book 4, A Practical Approach to History Studies Book 2 and
a Shona novel called Shukukuviri.
