23 Feb 2017 – Mwenezi – There is concern at Neshuro District Hospital that nurses at the institution are abusing a directive by Provincial Medical Director, Dr Amadeus Shamu, to reduce admissions in response to severe water shortages at the hospital.
Repeated efforts to get a comment from Dr Shamu were fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered.
However, well-placed sources at the hospital told this publication that some lazy nurses are taking advantage of the order to fast-track the discharge of critically ill patients.
“There are some drugs like stat dose that are administered upon seeing a patient and other remedies like Intravenous drugs (IV) that need to be carefully administered with the patient being closely monitored by a nurse. In many cases, however, patients are now being told to go and finish such courses at their nearest clinics,” said the source.
A concerned nurse also said demoralised nurses were now brazenly taking advantage of the crisis measures to reduce their own work load.
“Last Thursday the female ward was left with only one patient who had a theatre case. The rest were discharged but their conditions were still in need of attention,” said the nurse.
Another source also told TellZim News that some prematurely discharged patients are aborting their treatment regime owing to the long distances that have to be walked to the nearest clinics.
The situation at the hospital is still awful and the paediatric ward was still shut when this reporter paid a visit last week.
Children were still admitted in the female patients ward with very few new admissions being made as the water woes continue.health
