A 50-year-old Gutu man has been sentenced to six years in prison by Masvingo magistrate Bishard Chineka after being found guilty of attempted murder.
He assaulted his late brother’s wife after she allegedly rejected his marriage proposal to inherit her, following tradition (Kugara nhaka).
According to the state case presented by prosecutor Innocent Mudzingwa, on January 25, 2021, Edson Manyuchi, who had allegedly earlier proposed love to Edinah Tinago, his late brother’s widow, approached Bevi Chimene, the mother of Ednah Tinago, informing her that Tinago was having extramarital affairs at his late brother’s homestead.
Chimene then informed her daughter about Edson’s complaints regarding her extramarital affairs and urged her to refrain from such behaviour.
On the same day around 9:30 a.m., Tinago confronted Edson in his dining room, asking him to stop gossiping and tarnishing her name with rumours of extramarital affairs. Edson, appearing from behind Tinago, grabbed her by the neck with both hands, dragging her and striking her several times with a knobkerrie on her head.
Tinago screamed, attracting the attention of Edith Manyuchi and Marshal Mashava, who arrived at the scene to find Edson standing near the unconscious Tinago. Edson was armed with a knobkerrie and an axe, shouting and threatening to kill Tinago.
Mashava, who is the son-in-law of Manyuchi, managed to disarm his father-in-law by forcibly taking the axe and knobkerrie from him.
Unconscious, Tinago was transported to Cheshuro Clinic and later referred to Masvingo General Hospital, where a medical report was compiled.
Giving testimony in court, Tinago alleged that Edison had once proposed to inherit her as per tradition, which she turned down, the reason was why he attacked her so viciously after failed attempts to soil her name accusing her of extramarital affairs.

ZAKA – Two Zanu PF councilors from ward 9 in Zaka District recently clashed over a funeral speech in which the sitting councilor Livison Paradza felt threatened by fellow councilor Beauty Musunda who got in council through women’s quota after she gave a speech as councilor at a funeral.
Zanu PF provincial chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa who is also Zaka senator confirmed the development and said he had received the matter and it was being handled.
“I am aware of the incident and we are handling the matter. We just encourage our members to work in harmony,” said Mavenyengwa.
He said when faced with a similar situation, the proportional representative is not the owner of the ward so she should engage the ward councilor first before addressing people on his or her behalf. He also said in cases where she has to represent the councilors, she has to acknowledge to the people that she is representing the councilor.
“If the proportional representative wants to address people in any ward she has to notify the ward councilor who will mobilize people for her.
“If there is an event and the sitting councilor is not there, she then has to notify the ward councilor and in her address she has to tell the people that she is representing the ward councilor,” said Mavhenyengwa
In a 11 minute audio leaked to TellZim News, an irate Paradza is heard threatening Masunda with demotion saying she had no right to stand in for him as councilor without his permission and said he would escalate the ,matter to the top leadership so that she gets recalled.
“I want to call Brian (Brian Munyoro the Zanu PF provincial commissar), you were there at the meeting, you were told, and we used our resources for you to be councilors so if you continue doing what you are doing I won’t tolerate that.
“You cannot go and address a gathering without my knowledge, why didn’t you call me? You are women’s quota, so you address women,” said Paradza
She tried to explain saying she spoke based on what was said by the MP Davies Marapira but Paradza interjected saying Marapira was nothing and had no power to tell them what to do.
“Marapira has no power, who is he, we campaigned using our own resources and if you dare I can apply to the party and tell them you are now growing big. I am the councilor, I have a stamp and who are you, you are just a quota. If you go to any gathering and want to talk you have to tell the people that you are representing me.
“In fact, tomorrow, I want to apply and from today you are my enemy. You can’t have power like me. For you to be a councilor it’s my resources, the party didn’t give me any resources. You were given ward 9, 13, 14, and 15, so does that mean you now have power over all those wards?
“You are not a councilor, I didn’t reply to Marapira because he was saying nothing, go and tell him that I have said that,” fumed Paradza
Paradza is a teacher at a local school and is one of those whose salaries were ceased after they contested on Zanu PF ticket.
Paradza went on to say Masunda only became councilor because she had 5 O levels but has never campaigned for Zanu PF and only got in out of pity because she was not voted for.
“I am not a fool. I’m more clever than you think. You came to the party with your 5 O‘Levels and we understood you. No one even voted for you, your name was not even on the ballot. I made you who you are now. Have you ever campaigned for Zanu PF all your life? Respect those who respect you. I will humiliate you in front of everyone,” said Paradza.
He said Masunda should record the audio and give it to Marapira. He went on to say that Masunda was now his enemy and that she should not greet him if they met.
“Go ahead and record what I am saying. Make sure you give it to Marapira. From today onwards we are now enemies. If we meet don’t greet me,” he said.
Efforts to explain herself as Paradza took none of it and declared her his worst enemy until she told him to do whatever she felt was right.
“I never thought you would be angry, I was just doing what we were told to do by Marapira, however, you are free to do whatever you want,” said Masunda.

MASVINGO – While the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is seized with preparations for a series of by-elections across the country, its capacity to fund the elections is going to be put to test since the European Union (EU) withdrew funding to the elections management body (EMB) over its failure to hold credible elections, coupled with the existing bill yet to be settled with August 2023 election workers.
In September EU said it had withdrawn its three-year financial support to ZEC worth US$5 million, over concerns regarding the running and management of the August 23 harmonized elections in the country, putting more pressure on the EMB which still owes thousands of US$ to drivers and polling officers for the August harmonized elections.
ZEC is reportedly struggling to pay election workers who rendered different services during the August 23 harmonized elections with more than 360 transporters from Masvingo province only, said to have not been paid their dues
Though the actual amount of cash the EMB owes to the transporters is not yet ascertained, sources said there are more than 360 transporters from Masvingo alone who rendered services for different number of days and the amount could be close to half a million United States Dollars.
Contacted for comment, ZEC Chief Elections Officer Utoile Silaigwana asked the reporter to send queries to Zec director via email.
“Can you please send you queries to the director via email?” said Silaigwana
ZEC Provincial Elections Officer Zex Pudurai initially said all transporters were paid but later on acknowledged that there were some outstanding payments but said they were being processed and by end of week they would have been cleared.
“I have been told by our directors that there are some outstanding payments but they are being processed as we speak and by end of this week I am sure they would have cleared,” said Pudurai.
Transporters who spoke to TellZim News said they were promised to be paid within two weeks after the election but up to now nothing has materialized.
“We were told that we will get our dues after two weeks but up to now we haven’t been paid and our fear is that they are going to pay us at the prevailing rate of that time which has since changed because they promised to pay us in local currency,” said one transporter.
Another said they had spent more than their dues in fuel to and from ZEC offices to the Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) every day.
“I have already spend more than what I am owed in fuel; you drive to ZEC they tell you to go to CMED, you drive there, they tell you that they haven’t received anything and at times the way they talk to us shows that there is no any hope of getting anything soon,” said another transporter.
Another said they were shocked to learn that ZEC was engaging other transporters for the same duties for by-elections when they haven’t paid those who rendered services in August.
“We were shocked to learn that they are now engaging transporters for the by-elections when they haven’t paid us, it means they are biting more than they can chew,” said the source.
Transporters claim they were promised USD$200 per day payable in RTGS and some transporters have up to 20 days.
ZEC engaged private transporters to transport election material, from tents, personnel, ballot boxes and food among other things.

In a case that has left the Chipinge community tongue-tied, a man from that community reportedly set a house ablaze, leading to the burning to death of his daughter and ex-wife whom he had been allegedly hounding for sex, a court heard.
The man has already appeared at Chipinge Magistrate’s Court, accused of one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He allegedly set fire to a house where his ex-wife, her daughter, and his brother were sleeping. The incident occurred after she purportedly refused to engage in sexual activity with him.
The magistrate, Catherine Dzivanyika, deferred the matter to a later date for the continuation of the trial, pending forensic investigations scheduled to be completed on November 27, 2023.
As outlined by the state prosecutor, Pamela Mufudza, on November 15, the accused, Bright Majecha, visited the residence of the now deceased Paidamoyo Madondo at 4748 Gaza E Chipinge around 0200 hours. He demanded sex, but his request was denied.
On November 17, he returned and insisted on seeing his daughter, Tawananyasha Majecha. However, Madondo refused to open the door, citing the late hour. Approximately two hours later, Madondo noticed a flame of fire under the table while she was sleeping on a reed mat. She detected the smell of petrol, suspecting that the accused used it to ignite the fire. In an attempt to escape, Madondo, her daughter Tawananyasha, and her brother Blessing Madondo, who was also sleeping in the same house, failed.
Paidamoyo later managed to open the door, but due to the slippery floor, she fell. She and her daughter were burned on their entire bodies, while her brother Blessing escaped through the asbestos roof. Paidamoyo screamed for help, and a neighbor came to her aid. Unfortunately, her daughter had already died. Paidamoyo was rushed to the hospital, where she later succumbed to the burns.
The police linked the accused to the crime, as witnesses had seen him approaching the complainant’s home around 2100 hours. Additionally, he had visited the accused person’s residence, demanding sex, which was refused. On the 16th, he again went to see his daughter, being told to return during the day. On the fateful day, he threatened the victims, and a few hours later, the house was set ablaze.
Bail was opposed, as the state argued that he might interfere with state witnesses, who are his friends and neighbors, and posed a flight risk due to the nature of his crime.

Gokwe- Villagers of Kufazvinei Village under Chief Chireya in Gokwe North were left in shock and disbelief after a 69-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his 23-year-old biological son following an altercation over witchcraft accusations. The incident occurred on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at approximately 7:00 AM.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and appealed to the public for information on the suspect’s whereabouts.
“We urge members of the public with any information that could aid the investigation to come forward. We also reiterate our call for the public to seek assistance from their traditional leaders in resolving family disputes,” Mahoko stated.
On the day of the incident, the two individuals were at their homestead when the suspect, Tinevimbo Nyika (23), confronted his father, Aison Nyika (69), the now deceased, accusing him of being a wizard and causing misfortunes in the family.
Aison, enraged by the accusation, picked up a metal rod from the yard and struck Tinevimbo once on the left leg. A scuffle ensued, and Tinevimbo managed to disarm his father. He then used the rod to repeatedly assault his father until Aison succumbed to his injuries.
In a gruesome act, Tinevimbo ripped open his father’s stomach, pulled out some intestines, and hung them on a tree near the scene. He then fled the scene.
The assault occurred in the presence of the suspect’s younger brother, aged 13. Their sister, Tendai Nyika, aged 23, who was working in a nearby field, was informed of the incident, and filed a report with the police.

Over 100 participants are expected at the Masvingo pool tournament organised by Masvingo Pool Association (MAPA) at Manhede Bar this coming Saturday.
Speaking to TellZim News, MAPA Marketing Officer Tawanda Chemutsanga said the association had members drawn from four districts, namely Masvingo District Pool Association (MADPA), Lowveld, Nyika and Zaka.
“The provincial tournament will have at least 50 participants from MADPA then Lowveld, Zaka and Nyika Pool Association clubs will have at least 10 participants each,” said Chemutsanga.
Registration prices for the tournament are pegged at US$10 for men and US$5 for ladies, a development meant to promote women’s participation.
“Pool is an upcoming sport which has always been associated with men hence we have reduced the registration price for women so that we get more women to participate in the sport,” he said.
Registration will start at 0900 hours and the tournament will kick off at 1000 hours and participants will be expected to dress formally.
On prizes the first position will walk away with a prize of US$250, the second will get US$150, third will get US$100, and fourth will get US$50 while those on fifth position to eighth position will get US$20.
The association was launched in 2010 but stopped operating due to financial challenges and it is being revived.
This year’s tournament will be held under the theme ‘say no to drug abuse’.

Popular Zim dancehall artist Enzo Ishall real name Kudzanai Mamhare is expected to light Masvingo today at Masvingo First Capital Bank where the bank is giving services to Masvingo Mainly opening of accounts both USD and RTGS.

The bank said bringing Enzo of the ‘Baby Rako Raroorwa’ fame was a way to thank Masvingo for doing business with First Capital and said they wanted to bring fun to banking.

Consumer Banking Director for Finance Angela Kamhiriri confirmed the development and said there will be lots of fun at their bank location opposite Masvingo High Court.

“Enzo is going to perform soon, we have brought him on this blitz to bring fun to Masvingo as a way of thanking our stakeholders for doing business with us,” she said.

She said people were welcome to open accounts with the bank saying it has a number of advantages like 24/7 access to cash at ATMs across the country among other things.

“We have a variety and unique bouquets of accounts, people can transact online and access cash anytime at our banks and ATMs dotted around Zimbabwe,” said Kamhiriri.

She called Masvingo residents to come in numbers and open accounts whilst enjoying music and said even after today they were free to come.

She also said the event was a yearly event where the bank goes around the country meeting stakeholders.

Two people lost their lives and a third sustained injuries in a head-on collision that occurred at the 195-kilometer peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 6:30 AM.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
“We continue to urge drivers of motor vehicles to exercise maximum caution and familiarize themselves with the road conditions they will be traveling on,” Mahoko said.
The vehicles involved were a silver Scania truck and a white Toyota Allex private car.
Godfrey Bwende (44) of Mashawasha, Mbare, who was driving the Allex, died upon admission at Mvuma District Hospital, while a passenger, Tinashe Kabaya of Hopely, Zone 6, Harare, died on the spot.
The third person involved in the accident, Lavender Chiona, a 34-year-old female also from Mbare, escaped with minor injuries and was treated and discharged from the same hospital. The truck driver escaped unharmed.
Initial investigations revealed that the heavy truck was traveling towards Masvingo with no passengers, while the private vehicle was going in the opposite direction, carrying two passengers.
When the vehicles approached the 195-kilometer mark, near the Gweru turn-off, there was a misreading of the road pattern after a junction, resulting in the collision.
The police attended the scene, and the deceased bodies were transported to Mvuma District Hospital.

Gweru – Youth political party leaders from Zanu PF, Movement Democratic for Change (T), and Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) yesterday engaged in a unified clean-up campaign to remove campaigning posters and pictures, a move which was meant to preach peace and tolerance among political parties
The campaign, which was spearheaded by Community Solutions Zimbabwe, was conducted along the Gweru-Shurugwi road via Chaplin High School to Gweru Central Business District (CBD) saw political parties expressing their commitment to uphold peace for the development of the nation.
Speaking to TellZim News in an interview, ZANU PF Youth Secretary for Security, Tererai Chimombe said, the combined clean up and collaboration was meant to show how Gweru is united as a people.
“This shows that as a people we are one, we stand together as Zimbabweans despite our political differences. Politics is just a sense of belonging and differences in mindsets.
“I pray peace continues to prevail among us as Gweru people and as youths from Gweru despite our different political belonging,” said Chimombe.
CCC Cluster Leader, Clifford Mlilo said agreeing to disagree in politics was not a weapon of hatred and said people should work together for development.
“Agreeing to disagree is never a weapon of starting a war. We are peace champions and we stand for peace” Mlilo said.
Gweru Mayor and CCC Ward 4 councilor, Martin Chivhoko however said despite coming from different political parties, violence was never a solution.
“We co -exist as a people, when we look at political parties let me say, they are like football teams, it’s all about supporting the ideas you believe in but not killing each other as we are all citizens of this country.
“We live together, we eat together, thank you Community Solution for pushing the peace agenda which even moves in line with the government’s vision.
“If you kill each other, it is your father or mother’s household which loses a member. Why reduce the number of people in your family? Stay intact, self-control is a vital component,” said Chivhoko.
Guest speaker at the event, Gweru District Development Coordinator (DDC), Tarisai Mudadigwa said organizations such as Community Solutions were working for good cause to complement government efforts.
“We thank you youths and our civic organizations for complementing government in peacebuilding. We are one and it shows we are going somewhere. We have matured because gone are the days when it was deemed taboo to be seen meeting or congregating with other political sides while wearing different regalia.
“You see life is good when you walk freely and eat freely like what we are doing. As political party leaders let’s always bury our hatchet and build the country together.
“Conflict is everywhere, even in normal day-to-day lives but it takes self-control and maturity to understand that we are a family. Tolerance remains a priority among us as people. What you have done today is a clear demonstration that anything can happen, peace is possible and nothing can stop peacebuilding in Gweru,” he said.
