Mugabe to blame for Harare killings, war vets say

Former President Robert Mugabe

…old man has no place at Heroes’ Acre

Shingirai Vambe

HARARE – Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) national spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya has heaped the blame for the shooting of six demonstrators by soldiers in Harare on August 01 on former president Robert Mugabe.
Mahiya told journalists at a press conference at the Harare international Conference Centre a day after the deadly shootings that the involvement of Mugabe in today’s politics was the cause of the violence.
“Mugabe doesn’t deserve to be laid on the Heroes’ Acre because of his previous and current activities in today’s politics. He has done enough and we as war vets will not allow this madness; he has married himself to Nelson Chamisa and has lost track of cadreship,” Mahiya said.
He said the youth were being used by political parties at the expense of the people’s lives, adding that young people must refused to be used to stoke the flames of a civil war.
Tandiwe Ngulube, who was one of the panellists, echoed Mahiya’s words, saying the continued involvement of Mugabe in politics was saddening and would mark the end of Chamisa’s political career.
“War veterans see the hand of Mugabe hovering in today’s politics and his cunning behaviour in the opposition party is still visible,” she said.
Mugabe organised a press conference on the day before the harmonised elections, where he poured out his bitterness at Zanu PF for removing him from power and ‘expelling me from a party I founded.’
He also made it clear that he was not going to vote for Zanu PF, a party that ‘tormented me’, saying the only choice that remained for him was Chamisa since the other notable opposition leaders like Joice Mujuru and Thokozani Khupe did not offer much.
Chamisa later held his own press conference saying he welcomed every vote, arguing it was not for candidates to choose voters, but for voters to choose candidates.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF party, however, went to town about the developments, saying Chamisa had entered into an unholy alliance with Mugabe and discredited himself in the process.politics

…robbers get away with Guardian Security van

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – A gang of armed robbers on Monday escaped with a Guardian Security van and an estimated US$11 000 cash from Simrac wholesale after assaulting security guards and employees at gun point.
By the time of writing, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was investigating a case of armed robbery which took place at the Simrac shop in Msasa Road.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Ins Charity Mazula confirmed the incident and urged businesses to bank their money in time.
"We have since launched a manhunt for the suspects and we plead with members of the public who may have any information to come forward and assist the police," said Mazula.
Eye witnesses said the incident happened in the evening, with the gang first visiting an eatery at the back of the shop where they bought some food in the afternoon.
Simrac manager, Evans Mucherahondo said a group of four armed robbers stormed into the shop at around 18:30 hrs and assaulted employees who were cleaning up the floors.
He said the robbers demanded the safe and everybody was ordered to lie face down.
“One of the gunman came into my office and ordered me to hand over the cash box. A security guard who was at the backyard was tied up and we noticed that the whole shop was surrounded. I could not count them but they were many.
“In the confusion, Guardian Security guards arrived and they were quickly met with fire. They were disarmed and tied while lying face down. They went away with the van and I am not at liberty to disclose the amount of money stolen,” said Mucherahondo.local

My seat belongs to MDC Alliance, says independent Cllr

Siyai Neshanje

Brighton Chiseva

RENCO Mine – Masvingo South Ward 35 councillor, Siyai Neshanje, who retained his council seat in the just-ended harmonised elections as an independent, has said he will push the MDC Alliance agenda in council.
Neshanje has been the area’s MDC-T councillor since 2008 but he chose to stand as an independent after being disgruntled by the party’s chaotic primaries that apparently produced a weak candidate, Benson Shuro.
He told TellZim News it was the electorate than persuaded him to stand as an independent as he apparently was the only candidate capable of stopping Zanu PF from snatching the ward.
“I was born and bred in the MDC so I will return the seat home. I contested as independent to defend it from Zanu PF because people felt the candidate that the party had put forward was not capable of retaining the seat for the party. I think the people were justified in their concerns, just as the results of the elections have shown,” said Neshanje.
He called upon the people to work together for the good of the ward, saying his role will be to champion their interests in council.
“I urge all residents of the ward to unite and forget our political differences so that we can all help each other develop our area,” said Neshanje.
Neshanje polled 787 votes ahead of Shuro’s 546 votes and 382 for Zanu PF’s Allen Mushangi.local

‘Zanu PF fielded bogus polling agents’

The opposition MDC-T (Khupe faction)’s losing parliamentary candidate for Gutu North constituency, Admire Wakurawarerwa has said his defeat by Zanu PF’s Yeukai Simbanegavi was a result of a playing field that was heavily tilted against him.
He accused Zanu PF of vote-buying, saying the ruling party fielded unaccredited agents who were brazenly campaigning for their masters on election day.
"At Nharira Primary School, we had a case of a woman who claimed to be a Zanu PF agent yet she failed to produce her accreditation and we reported her to the police. Some voters were intimidated and reminded of the 2008 atrocities which claimed a lot of lives.
Wakurawarerwa also said the ruling party wantonly breached other rules set by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) in accordance with the Electoral Act.
"The whole process was not fair especially in Gutu North where Zanu PF held a road show on a Sunday, just a day before election day yet Zec had ordered that no campaigning should be done on the day," said Wakurawarerwa.
Efforts to get a comment from Masvingo Provincial Elections Officer Zex Pudurai (PEO) were fruitless as he was said to be in Harare on national business.
The electoral process has received wide criticism from many losing opposition candidates who claim Zanu PF went into the elections with an unfair advantage over them.
In its preliminary report, the European Union election observer mission cited the ruling part’s abuse of State resources and the biased State media as factors that negatively impacted on the credibility of the harmonised elections.local

Chiredzi Town Council moots prepaid parking

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Residents here have welcomed the initiative by the town council to come up with prepaid parking zones in the town centre, a move which will see the authorities raise funds for the rehabilitation of road infrastructure.
The town council has so far finished marking all the parking zones in the Central Business District (CBD) at TV Sales complex, Banc ABC, Edgars complex as well as at Electrosales complex which are the busiest parking zones.
Chiredzi Town Council Secretary, Charles Muchatukwa, said that markings have been completed and the prepaid parking will be functional very soon as sign posting has already been done.
“Prepaid parking in now functional in all gazetted areas. Markings and sign posts have been completed. The money collected will be channelled towards the rehabilitation of our roads and other forms of service delivery,” said Muchatukwa.
He said parking fees ranged from $0.50 (0-30 minutes), $1.00 (30 minutes – 1 hour) and $2 (1-8 hours).
United Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (UCHIRRA) chairperson, Josphat Tizirayi said his organisation welcomed the idea, adding however that there should be transparency in the administration of the collected revenue.
“The idea of having prepaid parking is very much noble and we welcome it. The only problem we might face is lack of transparency on how the money is used.
“We just hope everything will go according to plan and there will be openness in the use of the funds,” said Tizirayi.local

Zaka farmers struggle to deliver maize to GMB

GMB Jerera depot

…allege corruption by management

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Farmers in the district are struggling to deliver their produce to the Jerera GMB depot amid reports that the management is asking for bribes from them.
Truck drivers and farmers who do not immediately pay bribes are said to be spending three to five days at the depot.
The gate, which is opposite Mushangwe Bottle Store, is reportedly opened only to those who would have paid the required bribes.
When contacted for comment, Jerera depot manager only identified as Shumba said he was not authorised to speak to the media and refered all questions to GMB head office.
"I'm not allowed to speak to the media, if you need anything contact our head office and speak to the public relations department," said Shumba.
Farmers told TellZim News that some trucks would come and get in using the back entrance, offload their cargo and leave behind those that would have arrived much earlier.
“I have spent three days here without being served. Together with others, we have hired a truck to deliver our grain and the owners of the truck are charging us per each day we spend here,” said a farmer.
Another farmer said some unscrupulous truck drivers, working in cahoots with the depot management, were now exploiting the chaos to jump the queues using all sorts of funny explanations.
“Some of the drivers simply come and say they are carrying food aid from the Department of Social Welfare. They then jump the queues saying they cannot be expected to wait since they ostensibly would be in a hurry to deliver some of the grain to food aid recipients. It’s surprising though that most of them would offload all the grain here and leave. The management does not come out to tell us what is going on inside,” said another farmer.
Another farmer said she was pained that standards were not being enforced fairly, with some good grain being rejected for spurious reasons.
“They can tell you that your grain has too much moisture or that it’s too small, but go on to approve similar grain from someone else. There is too much corruption going on here,” said the farmer.agriculture

Outgoing Chiredzi town chair wants to take council car with him

Francis Moyo

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The United Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (UCHIRRA) and the Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association (CHIRRA) have denounced indications that outgoing town chairperson, Francis Moyo could be given a council vehicle as his exit package.
Moyo himself said he received a letter of recommendation from the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo stating he was free to take with him, at a price, the Toyota D4D vehicle, registration number ACO 5921 which he had been using for official duties.
“I am just waiting for the council to state the price so that I can get hold of my car as stated by Minister Moyo,” said Moyo.
UCHIRRA chairperson, Josphat Tizirayi, however, disputed Moyo’s claim, stating that former minister Saviour Kasukuwere in 2014 wrote a circular which barred councils from handing out council assets to outgoing managers and chairpersons.
“There was a circular which was issued by the then Minister of Local Government, Saviour Kasukuwere in 2014 which barred councils from giving out council property as packages to outgoing councillors and retiring staff members,” said Tizirai.
CHIRRA Chairperson, Jonathan Muusha accused Francis Moyo of being greedy, saying the outgoing Zanu PF Cllr had long shown interest in taking the car as his own personal property.
“It’s not good because a chairperson has no package in terms of the Urban Councils Act. If they have a resolution, councillors should be advised by the town secretary. The outgoing chairperson, in this regard, is being greedy. He must leave the car behind so that the next chairperson can use it,” said Muusha, adding that should Moyo persist, they would approach the courts to stop him.
“It is against the law. We are going to approach the courts over the issue. The vehicle was bought using public funds so if he wants a vehicle, he should get one from his party (Zanu PF). Even the minister must respect the law,” said Muusha.local

Mwenezi circumcision gang leader jailed for kidnap

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Chenjerai Chivarange (38) has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment after being found guilty of kidnapping an elderly man and taking him to a circumcision camp in the mountains.
Chivarange, of Chiwarure village under Chief Maranda, was given the sentence by magistrate Honest Musiiwa who, however, conditionally suspended six months.
TellZim News reported on two occasions how Chivarange and his gang from the camp pursued a naked Lysias Hlaisi whom they had ambushed as he bathed in the river.
Giving his side of the story in court earlier on, Hlaisi who resides in the same village with Chivarange. said he was corned by Chivarange and his circumcision group while bathing in the river.
He then had to flee home naked in broad daylight with Chivarange, who was the ring leader of the group, in hot pursuit right up to his home. Chivarange and his group manhandled and bashed Hlaisi before taking him to the mountain camp.
Hlaisi further told the court that in the mountain, he was forcefully circumcised and this has negatively affected his sexual prowess.
Appearing for the State, Willard Chasi said sometime in September 2010, Chivarange arrived at Hlaisi’s homestead with a group of about 20 men with the intention of taking Hlaisi to a circumcision camp in Tungunyu Mountain.
Being unwilling to go there, Hlaisi locked himself in his bedroom hut and refused to open.
Chivarange then took an axe which he used to break in, destroying some property in the process. After successfully breaking in, Chivarange and his gang bashed and manhandled Hlaisi before taking him to the mountain camp.
Hlaisi later on fled the camp and filed a police report.
After committing the offence and upon hearing that the police were after him, Chivarange fled to South Africa where he spent some years.
When Chivarange later returned, Hlaisi alerted the police leading to his arrest.local

Give workers a fair wage, govt tell Tongaat

VP Constantino Chiwenga

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – The government has urged Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe to give its employees fair remuneration and improve their living conditions so as to improve productivity and achieve cohesion, the government has said.
Addressing sugarcane workers at Gibbo Stadium in Triangle last week, the Minister of Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement, Rtd Air Marshal Perence Shiri said the salaries being received by sugarcane workers were low and their living conditions were ‘pathetic’.
Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Workers Union (ZSMIWU) had invited Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to address employees but it was Shiri who was then sent to represent him.
“Government is of the knowledge that we have sugar plantations here in Chiredzi with a lot of workers and it is our desire to see to it that that the workers’ wages and living conditions are upgraded.
“We should set the best practices when it comes to taking care of our workers so that other countries in the region can emulate us. If we give a good remuneration to our workers, they will work harder and the company will realise more profits,” said Shiri.
He also said his ministry had received a paper from the sugar company on what can be done to avoid retrenchments.
“We are engaging their management and it is government desire that the company grows so that they will employ more people instead of retrenching. We want local companies to grow bigger than they currently are,” said Shiri.local

Beaula Shambambeva

Brighton Chiseva

ZAKA – Former acting Zaka District Schools Inspector (DSI) Beaula Shambambeva collapsed and died on Sunday, August 05, evening at her rural home at Jerera growth point.
Efforts to get a comment from current DSI, Samson Chidzurira were futile as his phone went unanswered.
Provincial Education Director (PED), Zedius Chitiga, however, confirmed the matter saying he had just received the sad news.
Chitiga said he was also shocked by Shambambeva’s death, saying she had shown no signs of illness when he last met her some few days ago.
“I received the shocking news this morning (Monday) that Mrs Shambambeva collapsed last night. We heard that she was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said Chitiga.
Other sources said Shambambeva was busy doing her laundry with her daughter watching news on TV when she collapsed.
Shambabeva was the acting DSI for Zaka since 2016 following the transfer of James Mahofa to Gutu. She only left the post a few weeks ago following the appointment of Chidzurira as substantive DSI.
Shambambeva was due to be buried at her homestead in Mahusekwa, Marondera on Thursday, August 9.local
