Parents fret over safety of children as Zibwowa dam spills

By Brighton Chiseva

Parents in Mugomeri area of Ward 20 in Zaka are living in fear as Zibwowa Dam, now overflowing after the recent rains, poses a threat to the safety of their school-going children.
Daily, learners as young as five must brave the waters of Zinhuwa River, which flows downstream of the dam, going to Musarava Primary while older ones got to Tsiga Secondary Schools.
The sole crossing point is a flat bridge a few meters from the dam wall and spillway, where rushing waters pass through. Parents have to escort their young kids across, especially those in infant level disrupting their own farming schedules twice a day.
TellZim News visited the site and spoke to the guardians who appealed to relevant authorities to speed up construction of a school in the area so that their children escape the risk of crossing the river every day.
One parent only identified as Mbuya VaMona appealed to the authorities saying they should see that the school construction in Zimunhu area is completed to avert a possible danger posed by the dam.
“We appeal to relevant authorities to intervene and complete our school project because if the situation continues like this, we will lose children from this stream.
“We are no longer getting enough time in our fields because while others are going to work in the morning, we have to come here to make sure that our children cross safely. In the afternoon we have to come also and at times we have to pen the cattle and open them again after taking children from school,” she said
Another parent said the authorities were supposed to upgrade the bridge so that water does not flow over the bridge, or construct a suspended foot bridge at the crossing point.
“We appeal to authorities that they upgrade this bridge, because as we speak there is no bridge, it’s just a crossing point since the water flows on top of the concrete slab. They can at least put a foot bridge just to allow people to cross,” said the parent.
Ward 20 councilor Walter Masaka said the situation was hard for both parents and learners, saying despite the river challenge, the school was far, which affected learners especially those in infant level.
“The situation has been like that for a long time but in the yester years it was better because we used to have little rains the dam rarely spilled, however, this time around it’s a different story.
“It’s not only about the bridge, the school is a distant for people in ward 20, this affect leaners especially those in ECD and grade one to three,” said Masaka
He went on to say the school community project in Zimunhu village was being affected by lack of labor as parents were not willing to work despite the availability of resources but said they were targeting to open the school beginning of second term.
“We have our community school project and we haven’t finished the block though a few touch ups are needed. The block needs plastering and floors then window frames and window panes. We wanted to open it before we finished but the authorities said it was not allowed since the block will be used by infants, it had to have windows and floors.
“We are having labor challenges, the parents do not want to work, the Member of Parliament (MP) tried to mobilise for resources and we have cement on site that can be used for plastering but people are not willing. I appeal to other authorities to chip in and complement the already established efforts so that we finish off the block and start a new one,” said Masaka.

Man kills wife for drinking maheu at neighbour’s home

A man from Humanikwa Village, Chief Gutu in Masvingo is being charged with murder after he killed his wife over drinking maheu, a traditional beverage, at their neighbour’s place.
Masvingo Provincial Police Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the murder of Mitchel Madzivadondo (27) to TellZim News and urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully.
“I can confirm the death of Madzivadondo who was killed by her husband Nehemiah Mukaro (26) over maheu. I urge members of the public to solve disputes amicably and to refrain from violence,” said Dhewa.
Circumstances as given to TellZim News are that on January 15, at around 1400 hours the two were seated at their homestead when they had an argument over why Madzivadondo drank maheu at their neighbour’s residence. Mukaro took a stick and started to beat Madzivadondo all over the body.
The following day at around 0800 hours Madzivadondo went to her father-in-law’s residence to report the incident. The father-in-law later discovered that Madzivadondo was suffering from chest pains and took her to Gutu Mission Hospital.
Later that day she was transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital and police in Gutu were notified about the case leading to the arrest of Mukaro for domestic violence.
On January 27 Madzivadondo passed away and her body is waiting for post-mortem. Mukaro was later charged with murder.

Chinese nationals charged with attempted murder

Gweru – Two Chinese nationals who were trending on social media recently over a confrontation with their Zimbabwean worker over salary arrears appeared before Gweru Magistrate Beauty Dube on attempted murder charges and were remanded in custody to February 7.
The incident involved a Zimbabwean worker Kholwani Dube and Ming Chang Sino-Africa’s Bijou Farm in Gweru District.
The two, Liu Haifeng (51) and Wang Jun (21) were also charged with contravening the Firearms Act after they produced a fire arm during the altercation with Dube, together with using explosives, and prospecting for gold without a license.
The State told the court that on January 21, 2025 at around 4pm, Liu, who is the farm manager at Ming Chang Sino-Mining Investment in Lower Gweru, fired three shots towards Kholwani Dube after the two had an altercation.
This happened after Liu had assigned Dube a task, which he refused to execute, and was then served with a suspension letter. This led to a dispute as Dube refused to leave without his salary.
As the dispute continued, it was revealed that Wang, who is the stores man, arrived at the scene and joined in the fight whilst Dube was protesting his dismissal without his salary.
Liu dropped his pistol, and Wang picked it up from the ground and pointed it on Dube’s head. Wang then pressed Dube’s head to the ground and tied his hands with a wire.
The matter was then reported to the police leading to the two Chinese nationals arrest.

CZR calls for Mnangagwa to intervene on retail sector woes

By Staff Reporter

Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) has called for the urgent intervention of President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the closure of formal retailers and wholesalers, citing turbulent economic conditions that have left the sector on its knees.
This follows continued closure of formal retail and wholesale businesses, with those remaining evidently struggling to stock their shelves.
In a recent press statement, CZR president Denford Mutashu called on the Presidium as well as government to rescue the formal retail sector which is suffering from a number of operational and policy challnges.
“CZR calls for urgent intervention from His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa to rescue what remains of the formalized retail and wholesale sector.
“(We) appeal to the Presidium to prioritize interventions aimed at saving jobs and mitigating the ongoing wave of shop closures and retrenchments,” reads part of the statement.
The body bemoaned the dual currency system, which they said had become a major reason why most formal retailers were struggling to remain afloat, hence had allowed the informal sector to dominate the market.
“The fiscal, monetary, regulatory and statutory frameworks have remained unforgiving to formal retail and wholesale operators. These challenges have created an uneven playing field, allowing the informal sector to dominate with little intervention to ensure equity.
“One of the most pressing challenges is the dual currency system which disproportionately affects formal retailers and wholesalers. Formal retailers are compelled to accept the ZiG in a predominantly dollarized supply chain,” Mutashu said in the statement.
Mutashu appealed to government to intervene through addressing dual currency challenges as well as formalising the informal sector and reducing the regulatory burden.
“CZR appeals to government to fast track efforts to formalise the informal sector, ensuring equitable competition and tax compliance across all players. Streamlining and rationalizing the current licensing and compliance requirements will alleviate the pressure on formal businesses.
“Immediate steps are needed to cushion formal businesses against high operating costs including the provision of affordable financing options and addressing the dual currency challenges,” said Mutashu.
OK Zimbabwe recently issued a press statement assuring its customers that operations were going to continue following a series of exposes by TellZim News of empty shelves and tills in their branches across the country.
Consumers however are worried as more and more OK branches are still being pictured with empty fridges, tills and shelves.
Several outlets have closed under the N.Richards Group while Spar Zimbabwe has also closed its Queensdale branch.

Lake Mutirikwi spills

By Staff Reporter

As the wet spell continued until earlier this week, Lake Mutirikwi in Masvingo has spilled for the second time in more than a decade, a development that has brought hope to farmers along the Mutirkwi River.
Mutirikwi, the second largest inland dam after Tugwi-Mukosi is home to the Mutirikwi mini hydro-power plant which provides 5MW and is feeding to the national grid as the country goes through one of the most devastating loadshedding where citizens endure power blackouts of more than 15 hours a day.
Statistics from Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) showed that 12 of the major dams in the Runde Catchment were already spilling including Muzhwi, Ngezi, Tokwane and Manyuchi.
ZINWA warned people in the downstream of the Lake Mutirikwi Catchment area to exercise caution in the development of the lake spilling.
Tugwi-Mukosi the largest inland dam in the country was filled to 70.6 percent capacity while Mushandike was at 62.4 percent full.
Manjirenji and Siya dam had 20.6 percent and 17 percent respectively.

ED 2030 Agenda unstoppable – Minister

…as Garwe takes bootlicking to another level
…Seems he eyes National Commissar post
…Mnanganwa anointed by God

By Perpetua Murungweni

Minister of Local Government and Public Works Garwe recently took bootlicking to another level, telling civil servants in Masvingo to all sing the ‘Vision 2030’ hymn as the agenda was unstoppable and they had no option but to join the bandwagon.
Sources within Zanu PF have said Garwe, who has been on a rampage endorsing the ‘ED 2030’ agenda could be eyeing the Zanu PF National Commissar post as he keeps singing praises to Mnangagwa.
Speaking during the launch of the Government Commonage stands held at Masvingo Polytechnic on January 30, 2025 Garwe said while there were known ‘ForED’ outfits where civil servants were affiliated to, it was time for every single one of them to rally behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s bid for another term.
“I know we have Teachers ForED, Nurses ForED and all other civil servants but I know some of the civil servants are shy to rise and shine, to speak or be seen endorsing the President.
“It is time for them to start singing from the same hymn sheet with us, because Vision 2030 is unstoppable—it is a reality and it’s better we all join the bandwagon because the President was anointed by God,” Garwe said.
He mocked those who were against the Vision 2030 agenda saying they will soon develop hypertension, adding that the government did not want a situation where it would have to employ more nurses and doctors due to the number of high blood pressure patients.
He went on to say that every Zimbabwean had a mandate to be loyal to Mnangagwa, since it was not an option not to be, adding that those who were against the Vision 2030 agenda were merely wasting their time.
“Mnangagwa is our Moses he was instructed by God in 2017 to become president and develop Zimbabwe without aid from anyone but with the natural resources that the Lord blessed us with. Before Mnangagwa we never knew that minerals like lithium and platinum as well as gas and oil exist in our country.
“No amount of hate speech nor groups formed in this country or outside will stop Vision 2030. We are all Zimbabweans regardless of political persuasion, and our President is none other than Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa,” Garwe said.
He added that Mnangagwa’s leadership by a long shot surpassed that of former President Robert Mugabe, which he said was seen in how Mnangagwa had handled the recent El Nino-induced drought and subsequent food crisis.
“In 2024 this country witnessed a devastating drought, which had never been witnessed in the past 45 years but there was no shop which had no mealie meal, rice or any basic goods and services.
“In 1992 we experienced another drought and we were going to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana to buy mealie meal as there was nothing in the shops and this shows the difference in terms of leadership strategies,” Garwe said.
Garwe applauded the recent ban on United States of America aid to Africa by newly elected President Donald Trump saying those who were in the diaspora should return to Zimbabwe to support Vision 2030.
“I am very happy and grateful to what Donald Trump is doing; he has banned all the aid in Africa, we develop our own country not to be used to turn against your country through aid or funding,” Garwe said.
The Zanu PF Mashonaland East provincial chairperson has on several occasions said amending the constitution to allow for a Presidential term extension for Mnangagwa was not only constitutional but democratic, bashing a section of war veterans who recently came out to oppose the bid.
In Masvingo, Garwe called war veteran Blessing Geza a drunkard who had been sent to insult Mnangagwa after being given illicit beer (tumbwa), calling him ‘Cursed’ Geza to loud cheers from the ruling party supporters.

2017 repeat imminent

0

Let me tell you the bitter truth that I know most of you don’t want to hear, our problem is not Mnangagwa, I repeat, Ba 2 is not our problem; the real problem in Zimbabwe is the system. I know most of you will not agree with me but I am used to it, I know mofunga ndinopenga but let me tell you, ini ndinoonera manje and let’s not be tempted to do a repeat of the 2017 situation. I see most of you were celebrating statements by Chiwenga castigating corruption and mbingas etc. I saw a small fraction of people singing ‘siyanai naye Chiwenga’ ndikati zvataaangaaaa! On the other hand, Minister of ICT Hon Mavetera was also singing ‘mupanduki’ what what ndikati hokoyo, zvaakuda kunakidza. Let’s witness the drama hedu isu vana Mapombi tichiti regai zvibayane ikoko. History is repeating itself ladies and gentlemen, the script is developing everyday kkkk. Remember Dickson Mafios in 2017 praising Uncle Bob for chasing Ba 2 and making him a boarder jumper. Hanzi makagona president you fired Dambudzo, Dambudziko anga achiuraya nyika.  Institute investigations into command agriculture and arrest him and other ministers involved ndikati right! ‘Fast forward to 2025, we have a new Mafios in the name of Minister of Looting Daniel Garwe. I am saying Minister of Looting because his ministry is the most corrupt one, he presides over rotten councils who are involved in scamming residents buying luxury cars at the expense of service delivery. They do tenders and flout charges to get kickbacks. In Masvingo we have the Mucheke trunk sewer project yakadyirwa mari kudhara and up to now nothing has materialized. The roads are full of potholes and the Mucheke Bridge which links Zimbabwe and Southern Africa is always congested. Chichadonha before Masimba comes back to finish off the bridge in 2030. The bridge was designed for moving traffic not still vehicles. I am not an engineer zvangu but I know the basics. Apart from approving the corruption in local government, Garwe also presides over the traditional leaders who are used as Zanu PF campaigning machinery. He is the one with power to appoint and disappoint kkk. Machiefs anobuda mari veduwe and I wonder why Garwe is so slim, haasimbi kunge munhu akamedza waya. Hanzi naGarwe all those war vets calling against 2030 are demons. I liked it even more when he said before the glory of God is seen, madhimoni anotanga abuda so don’t be surprised when you see all those talking against the 2030 agenda, they are like demons and Mnangagwa will take this country to 2030, ini ndikati heya, regai tione.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me warn you, against denigrating ana Papa imi, nhasi I am more biblical, remember the story of Elisha and the kids who laughed at his bald head, hoo, sekai henyu mhanza yemunhu waMwari. Iyo UNISA yacho inazvowo, nhaimi zvayava kupedza Papa Magaya shuwa. Everything about him becoming fake. Muchanzwa manje manje kana zvaakudhakwa ikoko they will start saying hee things are not working well because the president is on sanctions.

Right, I am sure you heard what the trumpet said, I mean Trump, he decided to take off USA from funding WHO, the same way Uncle Bob took away Zim out of Commonwealth. Trump is doing what Bush failed to do, keeping his America while we keep our Zimbabwe kkkk. People are crying in many circles over Trump’s decisions. I just want to warn my fellow Zimbabweans that even though some of the decisions are being reversed especially on health, please play wisely, maARVs anogona kungoita mashoma anytime as well as some essentials like condoms and contraceptives. I know some will say hee Mapombi aakutaura zvebonde, but vakuru vakati akuruma nzeve ndewako. I wonder varakashi who were supporting Trump vari kutii. But I am sure you all agree with me, we have our own mbingas formerly called Zvigananda during the war times, we have the likes of Chivhayo, Scott, Passion Java, Tagwirei among others, ah not forgetting vanaPapa, all of them Zvigananda, talk of Herbet Mudzanire aka Angels, look at Makandiwa and Freddy, they all have money to splash and if we channel that towards health and other things we won’t need America I tell you. Without looking at the mineral resources we have in this country, we are already set and if they are accounted for, we will reach vision 2030 of making Zimbabwe an upper middle income economy by June this year. If our leaders account for everything, Zimbabwe would be filthy rich soon and would not rely on America to pay nurses, like what tsikombi yenyika always says, we need new leadership. When I say we need new leadership, I am not referring to Kedha. Yes, I have seen some people in some sections of the opposition pinning hopes on Chiwenga kkk nhamo. Ko vodii ivo vari makwai asina mufudzi? The only hope people had was the young man Nero but he deserted the masses and was unapologetic about it. Now he is just full of bible verses kuto darika vana Magaya. Ndonzwa zvichinzi naJelousy Mawarire paya paakarobwa kuairport during Tsvangirai’s time it was a deal gone wrong nemagoons aRex Nhongo. Moitaneikowo kupolitics uko, kkkkkk. Leave Mukomana to preach in peace. Haa zveZimbabwe zvandikona, no one wants to be confined in their space. Pamwe vana Magaya came to football politics after facing competition from him panyaya dze Bible kkkk, who knows. The army is supporting Kedha and the opposition is doing the same but let me warn you ladies and gentlemen, Zanu PF infighting is like a fight between your parents, stay out of it, never get involved unozonyara manheru vava musame blanket. Let’s not lose focus on Zanu PF factions, it’s their game and they have been there since the war of liberation that’s why some nationalists failed to get into the new Zimbabwe that is what keeps the party strong. Siyai zvakadaro, we all supported Ba2 in 2017 and now people want to repeat the same mistake.

The war vets led by this Gezi guy are crazy, I know they are telling people what they want to hear but I don’t think they are sincere, they are just bitter since they thought the so called Second Republic would give them another 50k kkkk. Why are they seeing that Ba2 is doing chaibva mumba now, where were they all along when people complained? They are just after their pockets, they are part of the system that authored our suffering and Kedha who they want to propel is the one who led us into removing uncle Bob and replaced him with the guy they are now condemning. War vets should know that this country belongs to Zimbabweans not them. If they are sincere they should simply make sure that we go for elections in 2028, people are free to choose whom they want to represent the party not hand picking like they are doing now. The same applies to the opposition, we have a problem of leaders who do not want to leave power. But on another note, Aluta Continua Cde Gezi kkk, we cannot allow someone to break the constitution, 2028 we need elections simple!!!

Before I go hangu kunokanga maputi angu for lunch, mange makanzwa here about the presidential pasture scheme kkk. Scheme yemafuro ladies and gentlemen haa our President is the best kkkk. Busy kuita zvemafuro emombe whilst inflation and unemployment is rocking the country, shops are closing and someone is busy with pastures, ufuro hwemombe dzakapera neJanuary disease, nxaaa!

Councillors clash over regularising Old Croco Motors rank

…..As council fails to return long-distance buses to Mucheke rank

By Amos Nyanzero

Tempers flared in a Masvingo City full council meeting held at the Civic Centre on Monday January 27 as councillors debated over the installation of a boom gate at the Old Croco Motors pickup point for revenue collection from long distance buses.

Deputy Mayor and ward 5 councillor Daniel Mberikunashe proposed the removal of the illegal bus terminus at Old Croco Motors, proposing that the area be used as a pick-and-drop area for long distance travellers.

“The bus rank must be removed, and I suggest it be used as pick-and-drop area for long distance travellers, with a boom gate for revenue collection,” said Mberikunashe.

Ward 8 Councillor Richard Musekiwa the stood to support Mberikunashe suggesting that installing a boom gate at the site was a practical solution because it could help regulate the flow of buses, allowing council to monitor and keep track of how many buses enter and exit the area.

“By implementing the boom gate system, it would become easier to manage and maintain order at the rank, ensuring better control of transport operation,” said Musekiwa.

Ward 2 councillor Benson Hwata however criticized the idea, arguing that there was no need to establish a pick-and-drop point there, saying touts making noise while loading buses were disturbing learning at Victoria Primary School located across the road.

“Rather than creating unnecessary complications, the buses should use the already existing rank (Mucheke Rank) because there is a school across the road.

“They should only pick and drop off passengers after coming from the old rank. This approach makes sense because currently they start picking people from garages and industrial areas.

“You said Masimba Construction would do the renovations, so they should focus on upgrading the rank rather than the Old-Croco Motors,” said Hwata.

Masvingo City Council, during former Mayor Collen Maboke’s tenure, made a resolution to move all long distance buses to the old Mucheke Rank, but struggled with the implementation of that resolution to date.

The Mucheke terminus was meant to be refurbished through a build-operate-transfer (BOT) system, copying Gweru’s Kudzanayi bus terminus model, but that also failed to materialize, leading transporters to continue using the Central Business District (CBD) for pick-ups and drop-offs.

In 2022 Mucheke Bus Terminus was cited in the city council budget consultation report under investment promotion, where council was looking for business partnership opportunities.

The bus terminus was a potential revenue cashcow for the cash strapped city council, as it has been lying idle for years without any meaningful efforts to refurbish.

In 2024, Mayor Alec Tabe said the bus terminus was going to be transformed into a state of art rank to benefit local businesses and vendors around the terminus to have more customers as travellers would buy from them.

“Masvingo City Council is determined to upgrade Mucheke bus terminus into a state of the art rank. We want it to be of standard level.

“The terminus was benefiting people when it used to run properly, so we want to revive and upgrade it so that those who stay in Mucheke and other local business benefit,” Tabe said then.

Masvingo teen dies in gas explosion

By Rangarirai Shanyurai
