MWENEZI – Three suspected armed robbers who were recently arrested at Lundi were sold out by a gun that slipped off the pocket of one of the ruffians, TellZim News has learnt.
The thugs are believed to be the part of a gang that has been terrorising many people in Masvingo and parts of the Midlands for a long time, raiding businesses and shooting their victims.
Though no comment could immediately be obtained from the police, eyewitnesses said detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acted on a tip-off and ambushed the suspects.
“Police acted after a tip-off from some diesel dealers who had become suspicious after a gun slipped from one of the thugs’ pocket at a Lundi night spot the previous night. People were also suspicious because the strangers were squandering money as if there was no tomorrow,” said a Lundi businessman.
Another eyewitness said the suspected criminals were taken by surprised as they had appeared very much at ease with their surroundings.
“They parked their Toyota Altezza vehicle in front of Madhuha beer hall and got busy feasting at another shop. Police fired warning shots that left bystanders shivering and one of the robbers tried to resist but he soon gave up. A gun was recovered from inside the robbers’ vehicle, hidden behind a seat,” said an eyewitness.
People who spoke to TellZim News praised the police for acting quickly and arresting all the suspects that they said were looking capable of robbing any business in the area.
Earlier this year, robbers pounced at Stopover and got away with a significant amount of money after firing shots and seriously injuring a worker. A service station in Zvishavane was also robbed and its owner shot and seriously injured just around the same time.local

NYANGA – A Nyanga married woman and her boyfriend were left shame-faced after being caught red-handed having quality time in her matrimonial bedroom last week.
Ivy Masamba, wife to Never Zimbiti who works at Troutbeck in Nyanga, and her boyfriend only identified as Gwenzi – a tout at Evergreen Bus Terminus in Rusape – were caught in Dombo, village 22 Makoni district.
The two lovebirds were caught and detained for hours by angry villagers who severely assaulted.
Witnesses said Masamba’s mother-in-law visited her and Gwenzi later arrived and confidently proceeded to the kitchen without even bothering to greeting her.
A suspicious Gogo Zimbiti did not get a good answer when she asked about the stranger and she left but returned a few moments later to find her daughter-in-law being intimate with the stranger.
She then locked the door from outside and informed the whole village.
Zimbiti and his wife’s parents were also called and they joined in assaulting the hapless woman and her lover. The lovebirds were locked in from Tuesday evening till Wednesday before police came to their rescue.
Efforts to get comments from Masamba and Gwenzi were fruitless and Zimbiti’s number was unreachable by the time of going to the press.local

MWENEZI – Zanu PF Mwenezi district structures have thrown their weight behind Ezra Chadzamira ahead of provincial chairmanship election rerun expected to be held in May.
Party members in the district have started a whirlwind grassroots campaign, openly mobilising support for Chadzamira, a suspected Team Lacoste loyalist who is likely to face an opponent aligned to the rival G40 faction.
Ward chairpersons and their structures have already been told to vote for Chadzamira.
Addressing structure members at an inter-district meeting at Maranda business centre last week, Zanu PF Central Committee member Tafadzwa Masvayamwando denounced G40 and urged members to vote for Chadzamira.
“Pamberi neZanu PF, pasi neG40. There are Gamatox elements remaining in Zanu PF despite Joice Mujuru and her cabal being fired from the party. The remaining rogue elements need to be uprooted. You should roundly vote for Chadzamira for the chairpersonship because he is the one with the interest of the people at hear,”said Masvayamwando.
The inter-district meeting was attended by district members from the Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) among them Priscilla Moyo-Zindari, Gift Mazhambe and district chairperson Rennius Muchoko.
All members of the district grassroots structures openly pledged their support for Chadzamira.
A similar meeting was held last Wednesday in Mwenezi East at Chingwizi and Dhiziri where structures were told to vote for Chadzamira.
Chadzamira garnered more than 12 000 votes in the previous elections against his rival Rtd Colonel Mutero Masanganise’s paltry 4 888. The elections were however declared invalid as other districts were said to have failed to vote due to logistical challenges caused by severe floods.
Critics have however blamed national Political Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere of influencing the cancellation of the results allegedly because his preferred candidate was destined for a dispiriting defeat.politics

ZVISHAVANE – The new substantive president of the Scout Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ), Ignatius Kajengo, who was elected at the organisation’s 68th Annual General elective meeting held on April 8, 2017 at Chinziwa Scout Park in Mutare, has dismissed claims coming from some quarters that he won the election through a flawed electoral process.
Kajengo won the election unopposed and with Gordon Tapfuma and Chris Mbanga as his deputies.
Highfield SAZ leader Allan Choruma, however, feels the elections were marred by irregularities and he has written to Kajengo requesting the nullification of the elections which he said were held in a manner which violated the SAZ constitution.
When contacted for comment, Kajonga acknowledged receipt of the letter but dismissed Choruma’s accusations as baseless.
“He writes as if he is representing many people yet those are his own sentiments and he represents nobody else. He is tarnishing people’s reputations through baseless claims and it’s not the first time he has been saying that; he has been using the internet to spread the same falsehoods for a long time,” said Kajengo.
He accused Choruma of wanting to politicise the movement which he said is non-political.
“We don’t even bother responding to his nefarious accusations but I think it’s high time we take action against him. He is not even a scout in the first place; for you to be a scout, you need to have a warranty yet he does not have it. He wants to politicise a non-political organisation which simply works for the good of children,” said Kajengo.
In his letter, Choruma however indicates that his sentiments are shared by many other provinces that reportedly feel that the winners profited from a flawed electoral process.
“The National Scout Executive Council agreed that for a province to vote, it should meet certain requirements such as submitting its audited financial statements and paying up certain levies among others.
“Out of five provinces (Midlands, Mashonaland, Matabeleland, Masvingo and Manicaland) only Matabeleland and Midlands submitted their audited financial statements though Midlands does not meet the International Reporting Standards. However, all provinces were allowed to vote.
“Also delegates who owe the association must not vote. Some members were nominated into office while having outstanding debts to the association for example; Munyaradzi Musamba owes US$2,733.64 but was nominated as a member of the audit commission. Also Nhamoinesu Mahachi and Emanuel Sakahuni owe US$3 390 and US$2 612 respectively to SAZ but they voted,” reads part of the letter.
Choruma also claims that rules were violated when contesting candidates, Kujonga, Mbanga and one Martin Chitate were allowed to count votes when the task was supposed to be done only by neutral personnel.local

MASVINGO – The man who was recently convicted and sentenced to 10 months in prison for assaulting Chief Nhema; Rangarirai Bwawanda, is now a free man after his lawyers successfully argued that their client had been given an unfair sentence.
Appearing before Zaka senior Magistrate Florence Nago, Benard Tinashe Mazodze had pleaded guilty to the assault charges and was slapped with the jail sentence, five months of which were set aside on condition he does not commit a similar offence over the next five years.
His lawyer, Dereck Charamba of the Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba Legal Practitioners however challenged the fairness of the sentence, saying the reasons were superficial.
“We should apply the law indiscriminately. Mazodze was supposed to be given an option of a fine as is always the norm in common assault cases. Chief Nhema is not a law enforcement agent and was not in his area of jurisdiction as the court had asserted,” said Charamba after the release of Mazodze on April 21.
It was the State’s case that on April 12, 2017 at Glow Petroleum in Jerera, Chief Nhema was conversing with Mazodze’s father over the upkeep of a child that he (Mazodze’s father) sired with the Chief’s sister.
Mazodze came and interrupted the conversation and started shouting at Chief Nhema who told him not to interfere with issues which did not concern him.
An infuriated Mazodze, however, slapped Chief Nhema twice in the head and head-butted him once on his left eye.
In giving the sentence, Magistrate Nago had indicated that Mazodze had humiliated the chief and had shown disrespect for traditional leadership and law enforcement.local

CHIVHU – A despondent man from Foto Village in Nharira under Chief Musarurwa shocked passers-by when he reportedly burnt Zanu PF regalia on a road on Independence Day.
Witnesses of the incident disclosed that around 15:00 hrs on April 18, the man (name withheld) took the regalia from his house and set it on fire in the middle of the road while singing songs that denounced the ruling party.
“It was clear in his eyes that he was angry as he burnt the regalia. It was like a one man demonstration as he boldly called for the ouster of Zanu PF,” said one witness
When contacted for comment, the man pleaded that his identity not be revealed lest he gets subjected to the worst from ruling party supporters.
“Handizive zvingangoitika kwandiri nekuti party iyi inogona kutora upenyu hwako asi chokwadi ndechekuti Zimbabweans are tired of the ruling party. Hatina chinonzi Independence except for the few corrupt government officials who siphon national coffers for their own benefit,” said the man.

MASVINGO – Zanu PF Masvingo provincial interim chairperson Jorum Gumbo has vowed to personally deal with Masvingo Urban Member of Parliament Daniel Shumba whom he accuses of circulating messages discouraging party members from attending Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meetings.
Gumbo was speaking during a PCC meeting held at Victoria Junior School last weekend after other members complained their work was becoming difficult due to Shumba’s interference.
“We have a problem with the Masvingo urban legislator chef. Shumba is up to no good as he disputes everything the province says. We also see him coordinating events with people he used to work with when he was still an opposition leader. I think Shumba came to Zanu PF to destroy it as we are often told that if you want to destroy Zanu PF, do it from within,” said one youth.
Gumbo was also told that Shumba was disputing his (Gumbo’s) legitimacy as provisional leader of the province, with a ‘rehabilitated’ Norbert Ndaarombe alleging that Shumba was using social media to divide the party.
 “I want to confirm what my colleague has said. I have a message which Shumba circulated yesterday (Saturday) calling this meeting unconstitutional. He wrote on a G40 WhatsApp group that a PCC meeting can only be held with a directive from (Zanu PF national secretary for administration Ignatius) Chombo. The people who are not here must not even be blamed because it is Shumba behind all that,” said Ndaarombe.
In response, a beaming Gumbo urged party members to leave it to him to deal with Shumba.
“I will not take what he is doing lightly. Leave him like that and leave me to handle him. He is Dr Daniel Shumba and I am Dr Joramu Gumbo, tichasangana pahu doctor ipapo.
“How can Shumba say all that when I was sent by the President? If he told people that I have been removed as interim chair, is there any circular saying so, or is there any circular which says I have been re-assigned? ” said Gumbo to loud applause.
He also said suspended provincial political commissar Jeppy Jaboon had approached him asking for forgiveness.
“I didn’t want to say this but because of your concerns, I will tell you. Jaboon has visited my office asking for forgiveness saying he wants to work well with others.
“I however instructed him to talk to all other colleagues he worked with and come back with a report on who is willing to come back on-board. I think we must give those who have realised their mistakes a chance. It is however unfortunate that Jaboon suffered a mild stroke and couldn’t finish the assignment I gave him by today,” Gumbo said.
He announced that the much anticipated provincial chairmanship election will be held on May 6.
  “After lengthy discussions, the party finally resolved that Masvingo holds elections to choose the provincial chairperson on May 6, 2017. Cain Mathema and I will preside over the election and members of the PCC will help. No outsider will come to intervene. Tinoda kuti mubike mbodza yenyu moga,” Gumbo said.
It was also resolved that provincial secretary for administration Ailes Baloyi be appointed acting vice chairperson with Jevas Masosota replacing Jaboon also on an interim basis.
The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) also announced that an interim disciplinary committee chaired by Baloyi had been set with other members being Masosota, Chamisa, Robson Mavhenyengwa and Brian Munyoro.politics

MWENEZI – A 21-year-old stock theft suspect who was given US$50 bail by the Mwenezi Magistrates Court last week had the shock of his life after he was immediately rearrested on similar charges by police detectives from Mberengwa.
Isaac Sibanda of Musina village under Chief Muzetese, Mwenezi, was not formally charged when he appeared before Magistrate Honest Musiwa but was given bail after the intervention of his defence lawyer, Kossam Chuma.
His freedom, however, lasted only for a few seconds after the detectives, who were already in court waiting for him in connection with other stock theft cases in Mberengwa, immediately pounced on him.
Although the State had argued against bail, the defence lawyer successfully convinced the court that Sibanda was a suitable candidate for bail.
The State’s case, led by prosecutor Willard Chasi, is that sometime in August 2016, Sibanda went to village Sichevo under Chief Maranda where he stole two beasts; one belonging to Simbarashe Mhizha and the other to Matambo Mpofu.
The suspect was allegedly spotted driving five more cattle and on August 19, 2016, he sold them at Vuruka dip tank.
The State further claims that village head Barwei Sibanda witnessed the transaction with Sibanda selling the cattle using two different stock cards; one with the name Isaac Sibanda and the other bearing the name Isaac Sikhahlo but both with the same identity number.
A police report was made leading to Sibanda’s arrest. The trial is expected to resume by the end of this month.local

CHIREDZI – At least 60 low income earning families are set to benefit from Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Scheme (Zaha) project which has acquired land from Chiredzi Rural District Council to construct 103 houses at Buffalo Range.
Zaha director general Dr Killer Zivhu told TellZim News that the project forms part of the organisation’s drive to fight the housing backlogs in line with the government’s housing policies as expounded in ZimAsset.
“The project is aimed at complementing government efforts to provide decent accommodation for the people and we are targeting low income earners such as the civil servants,” said Dr Zivhu.
He said that of the 103 houses currently under construction, at least 60 houses will be finished by the end of this year.
“We have acquired land to construct at least 103 houses and we are confident that before the end of this year, at least 60 families will be staying in these houses. The houses will be fully connected to sewer and electricity systems because all the equipment is available,” Dr Zivhu said.
He said the ultimate goal was to have land to construct more than six hundred houses in Chiredzi.
“Our target is to have land to build more than six hundred houses with our own money and then sell to the people,” said Zivhu.
He said the organisation will sell the fully-constructed structures for US$40 000 which will have to be settled over an agreed period of time.
Minister of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage, Abedinico Ncube, who recently toured the project, praised Dr Zivhu for his work.local

MWENEZI – A former employee to Pastor Julius Chimbi of the Covenant Faith Ministry is standing trial in the Mwenezi Magistrates Court for assaulting the pastor and his wife after they allegedly failed to pay the money they owed him.
Appearing before Mwenezi Magistrate Honest Musiwa, Emmanuel Masendeke of Chaka village under Chief Gutuza in Chirumhanzu pleaded innocent to charges of assaulting Beauty Chakwesha, a teacher at Chingami Primary school in Mwenezi.
Masendeke dismissed Chakwesha’s medical report which was produced in court saying the complainant and her husband were out to fix him for demanding that they give him his money.
“Chakwesha’s medical report was fabricated because she is well-connected to Neshuro Hospital….After all, they have a track record of not paying their workers. The misunderstanding between me and the complaint’s husband is that he suspected that I was having an affair with his wife,” Masendeke told the court.
Pastor Chimbi, however, told the court that he suspects he was targeted because he had once expressed his discomfort after finding his wife Chakwesha and Masendeke in his (pastor’s) bedroom putting a mosquito net.
The State case led by prosecutor Willard Chasi is that on March 17, 2017, around 16:00 hrs, Masendeke approached Chakwesha and Chimbi at Chingami Primary School and asked that he be reimbursed for buying fuel for the couple’s kombi when he still worked as their conductor.
Chimbi could not give Masendeke a convincing answer leading to the assault which left the victims injured.
The trial will continue next week.local
