28 April 2017, ZVISHAVANE – Newly-promoted women soccer side Zvishavane Pirates have appealed for corporate sponsorship to enable them to become the most formidable women soccer club.
Speaking to TellZim News, club chairperson and co-founder Placida Brown said the main aim of the project is to empower the girl child.
“Our objective is to prove to the world that what men can do, women can also do. We have a lot of talent here in Zvishavane that needs to be nurtured. If we get sponsorship, I tell you the sky is the limit for these young girls.
“We are saying business women should take the lead in promoting these girls and the rest of the business community should also do exactly what they do when they sponsor men’s football teams,” said Brown.
The team is guided by two coaches, co-founder Lindiwe Ndlovu and former Zimbabwe Saints coach Admore Sibanda.
The duo said the so-called big teams with a long history in the women’s premier soccer league should brace themselves for many surprises.
“We are not in the league just to make numbers but we are there to compete for honours. Those who want to underrate us may do so but at their own peril,” said Sibanda.
Team captain, 20-year-old Leonorah Ndlovu was also very optimistic about the team’s future and its prospects for rapid growth.
‘I am happy that we have made the first step to the top flight.This is an opportunity to showcase our talents. Who knows maybe, in the near future, we will be in for selection to play in the women’s national team,” said Ndlovu.sport

ZVISHAVANE – Reigning Castle Lager soccer champions, Caps United gafa Lloyd Chitembwe has warned Shabani Mine FC not to be overexcited by their glamorous start this season as the tide can still easily turn against them.
Bvaru Bvaru are over the moon after defeating Dynamos at National Sports Stadium three weeks ago before settling for a draw against Caps at Maglass stadium.
Chitembwe, however, feels the high flying asbestos miners could be in for a rude awakening if they they decide to prematurely begin to count their catch
“We cannot rely on the results of the opening matches to determine the future. It’s too early to predict.  It doesn’t mean that those who won the opening matches can win the championship or those who lost will be relegated,” said Chitembwe.
Chitembwe defended his charges who were recently belittled in front of the fully-packed Maglass stadium saying despite their failure to clinch an outright win, Caps had still managed to grab a point away from home.
“The boys played very well against a well-furnished side. I am happy that we managed a draw away from home and this is good for a start,” he added.
Shabani Mine FC head coach Wilson Mutekede is however happy with his side’s current performance which he hopes will be maintained against other big guns in the premiership.

ZAKA – Chinorumba-based amateur welter weight boxer, Freeman Mabvongwe has recorded yet another tremendous performance in Lusaka, Zambia although overall, his team was outperformed by the hosts in an international amateur’s tournament.
The tournament was organised by Mr. T 35 and Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions as part of Charles Manyuchi’s send off ceremony ahead of his WBC Silver Welterweight title defence against Uzbek challenger, Qudratilo Abduquxorov in Singapore on March 25, 2017.
Out of the eight-man team which participated in different categories, Mabvongwe of Chinorumba High School and Brandon Dani performed the best.
Boxing President, Jim Mpalale was pleased with Mabvongwe’s performance in Lusaka although the team was outcompeted on overall.
Mpalele praised his team’s hard work and praised Mabvongwe whom he said had a bright boxing career ahead of him.
“His act was good. He had a tough but very good fight which he won. In Zimbabwe, he has always been winning his matches but the level of local opposition has not been as tough as what he encountered in Zambia.
“The Zambians were nonetheless shocked by Mabvongwe’s way of boxing, flamboyance and hard punching,” said Mpalele.
“Manyuchi’s manager, Chris Malunga was so impressed by Mabvongwe that he predicted a world class champion in him. By the way, Malunga has four current world champions in his stable and I believed him when he said he saw a world champion in Mabvongwe,” said Mpalale.
The team will also compete against the Zambians in a return league in Victoria Falls as they prepare for a Zone 4 bout to be held in Angola.
In December 2016, Mabvongwe bagged bronze in the amateur Africa United Southern Country welterweight games in Angola.sport

28 Apri 2017, MASVINGO – Masvingo City Football Club, which used to be the city’s sole representative in the division one soccer league before the coming in of Mucheke Pirates FC, has decided to dissolve its executive and transfer all responsibilities to a steering committee.
The move to dissolve the whole board was taken after the team chairperson relocated to Harare and after many members of the club left the team to join the rivals, Mucheke Pirates.
Since the team belongs to the community, it was resolved to give shares to those who used to help the team in different ways.
Martin Mureri, Richard Madyavanhu, Kudakwashe Chitsvare, Michael Nyevera, Cuthbert Mutandwa and Isaac Chapura make-up the steering committee that will run the affairs of the team until a new executive is elected.
Speaking to TellZim News, Nyevera said he expected everybody to work hard and produce better results than ever before.
“I think it’s a noble idea considering that we now have shareholders who will be operating above the executive unlike yesteryear where the executive was not monitoring. I think that will force the executive to work extra hard and with unity of purpose to produce good results which will make the board and community happy,” said Nyevera.
He also said preparations for the upcoming season will commence soon as some logistics are yet to be put in place by the steering committee.
Nyevera also said despite facing challenges, the team had managed to retain all its senior players and he encouraged new players to join.sport

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) will host a soccer coaching clinic in Masvingo on March 25 up until April 1, 2017 at Mucheke stadium in a bid to improve competitiveness and develop talent.
The coaching clinic will be headed by football legend and former Zimbabwe Saints and national team striker, Gibson Homela.
The event will see those with a genuine passion for football being given a chance to have their skills horned as they showcase what they are made of. Those with Level One coaching certificates and ex-premier league players have also been encouraged to attend.
Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association (Zisca) coordinator, Cuthbert Kwangwari stressed the need for those with football at heart to attend the course.
“I invite all those football lovers to attend this coaching clinic because it is being done for the betterment of our game. The reason why we leg behind is because we don’t have many soccer academies. I therefore urge even school teachers to attend the course,” said Kwangwari.
He said they were especially interested in school teachers so as to introduce them to professional standards while equipping them with the knowledge needed to stem rampant age-cheating in football.
New minimum requirements set by Zifa obligates all top flight coaches to be holders of at least a CAF A coaching licence and that they be assisted by someone with a CAF B or C licence.
Division one coaches should possess CAF B coaching licence while secondary school coaches must have a Zifa Level Two certificate. It has also been made mandatory for primary school football coaches to hold a Zifa Level One certificate.sport

28 April 2017, CHIREDZI – Church of Christ-run Shingai Primary School has made strides to improve learning conditions by constructing a state-of-the-art computer laboratory and a Grade One classroom block which will be opened in May this year.
The laboratory block was built at a cost of over US$70 000 and will house 110 desktop computers in two rooms.
Vice chairperson of the School Development Committee (SDC) Jonathan Mupamombe said the current SDC board has managed to preside over the construction of three buildings including the ECD block using the building levy.
“The school has constructed two blocks using the building fund. We have also finished an ECD block which is already in use. There is also a computer lab with two rooms that will be shared by those doing Grade Three going down and Grade Four going up.
We want every child to learn how to use a computer because we are living in the age of technology. We plan to construct another building for Grade 5 pupils to make sure that they all attend morning classes,” said Mupamombe. 
Mupamombe said the school has huge expansion plans and will engage council to be given more land to build new classrooms because enrollment is rising yearly.
 “We are running out of space and we hope our council will find more land for us. We want to give every child a chance to get primary education at our good school,” Mupamombe said.
He also appealed for well-wishers to come on board and help the school with resources to fund its development plans.education

28 April 2017, MASVINGO – The Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) will host a health expo in Masvingo on March 19 – 26 at the Civic Centre where people will receive free medical help.
The event will see people receive free medical check-ups and medical testing for various ailments while dental and optical services will also be provided.
Medical consultations and minor operation services will be provided while complex conditions will be referred to hospitals for attention.
Speaking at the pre-health expo meeting held last week at the Civic Centre, SDA National health director, Dr Douglas Mutanga invited people to be part of the expo.
“We are inviting people from all walks of life to come and receive free medical help. People from all walks of life are invited regardless of circumstances.
“People must come for check-ups on time so that they get to know the state of their health early because your health is your wealth,” Dr Matanga said.
The pre-health expo saw church members of the church marching from their respective areas to the Civic Centre followed by a clean-up campaign in the CBD as part of efforts to encourage people to keep healthy surroundings.
The health expo will also offer free medication and give educational tips on health and good living habits.
Men and women’s clinics will also be available to offer medical advice for different health problems that are found in men and women.
The organising committee is also planning to work with Zimbabwe Medical Association (Zima) for the Expo.
In 2015, the SDA hosted similar health expos in Chitungwiza where thousands received free medical help. Another successful medical expo was also held in Gwanda last year.religion

28 April 2017, CHIREDZI – Residents organisations in Chiredzi and Chivhu have criticised Local Government Minister, Savior Kasukuwere of ignoring what they call the rot in the Chiredzi Town Council and Chikomba Rural District Council while ruthlessly descending on all MDC-T dominated councils in the country.
At the centre of the grievances in Chiredzi is the minister’s alleged failure to take action against council despite many irregularities having been unearthed by a ministerial audit team.
When the audit team visited last year, it discovered that councillors had irregularly shared amongst themselves 40 residential stands that they latter resold to third parties at inflated prices.
The team also found that council chairperson; Francis Moyo had been involved in an accident while driving a car he was not supposed to drive.
He allegedly went on to make a false report saying the car was being driven by a council driver.
In Chivhu, Collen Zvarevashe of the Chivhu Residents and Ratepayers Alliance said his organisation was aware of nepotism cases where close relatives of the Chikomba council management had found their way onto the council payroll as ‘interns’.
“There is a lot of corruption and nepotism in our council but it is being ignored. Council offices at Sadza and here in Chivhu have accommodated people who have been employed as interns yet they are not studying. What sort of work-related learning will make one stay at his workplace for more than a year?” queried Zvarevashe.
Chikomba RDC chairperson, Pardon Mudzimu, however, dismissed all allegations of malpractice at the council, saying everything was being properly done.
“There is nothing of that sort at the council. I don’t know about that, ask even the CEO or the HR (manager), they can testify,” said Mudzimu.
He took a swipe at the media for tarnishing the image of council through negative reporting.
Council HR manager, Bullen Chiwara, however, refused to comment, saying only the council CEO and chairperson were allowed to speak to the media.
In Chiredzi, the United Chiredzi Residents and Rate Payers Association secretary general, Bernard Dhachi told TellZim News residents were not happy that Kasukuwere was ignoring the rot while haunting MDC-T councils, the latest being Gweru where he fired Mayor Hamutendi Kombayi.
“There is no accountability in council and corruption cases are being ignored. The minster should come and end the rot in the council with the same vigour with which he is pursuing councils being run by the opposition.
Chiredzi Residents and Rate Payers Association (CHIRRA) chairperson, Jonathan Muusha said they suspect that the minister was keeping his silence because he was benefitting from the rot.
“The investigation team indicated that the accident saga was supposed to be made a police case but nothing has been,” said Muusha.
When contacted for comment, Kasukuwere said he was still working on the report.
“I have just received the report and soon after I finished perusing it, I will give recommendations for the benefit of the people,” said Kasukuwere.politics

28 April 2017, MWENEZI – People who have been receiving monthly allowances from Zimbabwe Red Cross in Mwenezi since October last year have expressed despair as the programme is scheduled to come to an end this month.
The Zimbabwe Red Cross – funded by the British Red Cross through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society – has been helping about 985 households in accordance with the organisation’s schedule.
Ward 14 councillor Admire Matutu thanked the organisation for its charity work in his area but said people were still in need of assistance as the agricultural yields have been affected by recent floods.
“The Red Cross has helped a lot of people in this area but there is still more that needs to be done. It is quite unfortunate that they will be leaving us soon. Our people are desperate.
“A lot of households have been dependent on the initiative and a huge gap will be felt when they are gone,” said Matutu.
Zimbabwe Red Cross provincial programmes manager Fungai Maregedze said chances that the programme will be extended beyond March were slim.
“There were suggestions forwarded to us during our provincial drought relief committee meeting to extend the end of March deadline to May. Though we are willing to prolong the relief aid, it’s highly unlikely that we will be able to go beyond March,” said Maregedze.
The organisation has been giving cash to about 985 households in wards Five, Eight and 14.

28 April 2017, MUTARE – A 12-year-old year old boy from Chisuko Village under Chief Nyashanu in Buhera was last week found hanging on a tree in a suspected case of suicide.
Samuel Masuka was found dead on the tree branch some 100 metres away from his homestead.
Manicaland Police spokesman Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said investigations were underway to reveal what really transpired on the day.
“We received a report following the death of Samuel Masuka who reportedly hanged himself on a tree. Investigations are underway,” said Inspector Kakohwa.
Inspector Kakohwa said that around noon on the fateful day, the boy and his eight-year-old brother went to the cattle pan to milk the cattle.
“Samuel then instructed his brother to drive away the cattle which were grazing close to a maize field but when he returned later on, he found Samuel hanging on a tree branch. He rushed home and informed their grandmother Mavis Vurayayi and she found Samuel dead,” said Inspector Kakohwa.
A police report was made to Muzokomba Police Station and the body of the deceased was taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital for a post mortem.
No foul play is suspected in the case.local
