09 March 2019, MASVINGO – A Charles Austin Theatre-based film director, Sydney Taivavashe, last week landed a top gong in the outstanding short film category for his film “Seiko” at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) held in Harare.
The 25-year-old Taivavashe says he is thrilled by the honour as it shows that his toiling had not been in vain.
“I feel greatly honoured and happy that our work here in Masvingo is being recognised and appreciated in our country. We are working very hard so that we make Masvingo a hub of artistic expression and to change perceptions that only large cities like Harare and Bulawayo can produce something tangible,” said Taivavashe.
He expressed gratitude to other artists and directors that he works with at the Charles Austin Theatre.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Doug Hill for supporting my passion. He is a man who is very passionate about art.
“I also thank Charles Munganasa for producing the film through huge effort. I acknowledge all the artists that I work with; the award stays at Charles Austin Theatre and it is their award too,” said Taivavashe.
The young film director, who says he is inspired by Tsitsi Dangarembga, produced his first short film in 2006 called ‘The Terrific Night’ and went on to produce others like ‘The Unexpected’ and ‘Through the Night 1 and 2’.
The award winning film was shown at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2016 and was nominated in best foreign film.entertainment

MASVINGO – Global Marketing, a local marketing company, has introduced digital marketing billboards in town in a bid to improve marketing strategies and also help usher the city into the digital world.
The company has erected two billboards; one at corner Josiah Tongogara and Hellet Street, and the other one along Robert Mugabe Road.
Global Marketing president, Proud Masekesa said they want to aid the development of digital marketing in the province and the rest of the country.
“We acknowledge that the future lies in digitisation so this is our initiative to help develop our city with regards to that. We therefore invite companies to partner with us and use our facilities to advertise their products. Our rates are affordable and competitive,” said Masekesa.
Global Marketing was founded by young entrepreneurs; twin brothers Proud and Pride Masekesa who partnered Kudakwashe Mudekunye for the initiative.
The company is still working on erecting more digital billboards in the city centre and in other areas.
The Masekesa brothers lauded the response they are getting from the business community and thanked Victoria and Renias Mahachi for giving them space to erect their billboard at their business premise along Hellet Street.entertainment

MASVINGO – Local theatre artists seem to have struck gold with one of their works, ‘Bornfree’, a play directed by Charles Munganasa, set to go on a tour of Spain and other countries.
Bornfree was first staged at Charles Austin Theatre a few weeks ago and will tour Spain and China in June and August respectively.
Plans are underway for the play to feature at the World Championships of Performing Arts in the United States of America.
The play will start with a national tour in March where it will be staged in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Mutare.
Munganasa attributed the success of the play to hard work and the contributions of fellow artists and the community.
“It’s delightful to note that the play has grown from an impressive launch in Masvingo to international theatres where it is set to be staged. This is a result collective effort by the cast, crew and the support from our community,” Munganasa said
The play stars Michael Banda, Ngoni Chinovava, Yanano Musingarambwi, Kudzai Takawira and Takudzwa Ponde.
Born Free focuses on the concept of freedom as told through the eyes of young Bornfree Nyika who is son to Senzeni and Dzinorira Nyika, a former war collaborator who is always violent and abusive because he suspects his wife is cheating.
Dzinorira’s abusive behaviour leads him to kill his wife and Bornfree struggles to free himself from his father’s grasp and suffers identity crisis.
He then kills his father to avenge the murder of his mother and later finds out that Father Abraham Ndlovu, a priest whom has always admired, is his real father.entertainment

GWERU – City of Gweru has a new mayor: Ward 9 Councillor Charles Chikozho of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) who has stepped in to replace fellow party colleague, Hamutendi Kombayi.
Chikozho beat Zanu PF’s Ward 5 Councillor Bonface Magara of Zanu PF with ten votes to six.
Chikozho will be deputised by his MDC-T colleague; Councillor Willard Ndauta of Ward 8 who beat Zanu PF’s Charles Simbi to land the post.
Speaking to TellZim News soon after the election, Chikozho said he is ready to fulfil his mayoral promises to residents of Gweru.
“I made promises to bring Gweru back to sanity and I will keep that promise. I don’t want to talk much because it will seem I am neglecting other problems currently being faced by the city but surely, engagement supported by action will be taken to bring the city back to its status,” said Chikozho.
Former Mayor Hamutendi Kombayi, who was fired last month by Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere over alleged acts for misconduct, has returned the mayoral regalia but its chain was later discovered to have been incomplete, with some of its golden parts missing.politics, local, topnews

09 March 2017, CHIVHU – Budding artists have applauded Applesun Investments, an indigenous small enterprise with an interest in bookshops, for contributing to the development arts in Chivhu by helping upcoming artists establish their feet in the industry.
One of the artists who have benefited from Applesun Investiments’ helping hand is afro jazz musician, Daniel Makurazhizha, aka DM Skills, who is the frontman of Vibration Sound group.
Mukurazhizha said he was excited that local small business had come to appreciate the importance of supporting their own.
“The executive director of the company helped me record, produce original CDs and market the project. I now have a contract with Nicetime Liquors to perform there every Saturday,” said Mukurazhizha.
RnB and Hip Hop artist, Garikai Bobby ‘Gari BM’ Mupatsi says he has managed to break even as a musician after Applesun Investments came to his aid.
“I also have a contract with Nicetime Liquors and Philjen where I perform on Saturdays thanks to Applesun’s efforts. If more companies could choose to help artists, we would see the growth of the industry and the creation of more jobs,” said Mupatsi
Applesun Investments executive director, David Marufu said his company was eager to see young artists becoming successful and building prosperous career paths.
“It is a way of ploughing back to the community. There is so much talent out there but what lacks are the resources to scout for it as well as nurturing it.
“As society, bear the responsibility to promote aspirations so that young people can develop themselves and desist from injurious behaviour,” Marufu said injurious.

In Masvingo, MDC-T is literally dead – e-eh kufa kuti mbombombo chaiko. There is virtually no leadership and Zanu PF will win easily in Masvingo province. Can you imagine the whole MDC-T provincial executive stays in Harare and they rarely come to Masvingo.
Talk of Mavetere, Mupindu, Gumbi – they are all in Harare and they are not in touch with the reality on the ground. When they come here they want to apply things that are applicable to Harare situation and not Masvingo pedzezvo moti munga hwinha.
Mapombi really have little to appreciate from Zanu PF but in terms of being organised, vari kumberi kudarika vanhu vaTsvangirai. Asi wati kungongwarira kuzoti we have been rigged hahahahaha tibvirei apa! You are not working and don’t expect miracles to happen.
The Sitemere-led MDC-T executive was far much better – in fact the current leadership is the worst to say the least.  Simetere was resident in Masvingo and every weekend had a party activity. Even Tongai Matutu, Jeffryson Chitando, Enerst Mudavanhu and others they were really dedicated and they sacrificed for the party. No wonder why they got 14 seats in 2008.

Anyway, Mapombi is intending to make public her allegiance to Ngwena – regaiwo Mukaranga ambotonga nyika haisi yemaZezuru ega iyi. But Ngwena continues to disappoint Mapombi zvekuti I am having second thoughts – unofira mahara mhani ndozvinobhowa.
At least Gushungo 40 (G40) faction rewards its members but that is not the case with Team Lacoste. Mutsvangwa was fired and Ngwena remained zii. Chadzamira won the provincial chairmanship but G40 ikamubatirira and again Ngwena remained zii. Hahahahaha ndofirei pakadai better to join G40 at least I will get chicks from Mphoko. Kkkkkk but for the whole VP to donate chicks with us saying that is development haaa-a zvonyadzisa izvi.  Dr Amai better she donates second hand clothes (mabhero).

It’s high time he passes on the button, and of course, not to his wife but someone else who is more competent.  But what I have realised is that people in Zimbabwe are not quite intelligent; even if Grace takes over from Bob today, no one would question that as long as mudhara achiri mupenyu. We often lie to ourselves hanzi Mnangagwa has the support of service chiefs and stuff, but the truth is that Mugabe is the CEO of this Zimbabwe Pvt Ltd and anoita zvaanoda nayo and no one would dare question him.

09 March 2017 – GWERU – The City of Gweru will today (Thursday) choose a new mayor to replace Hamutendi Kombayi who was fired by Local Government Minister, Savior Kasukuwere, after being found guilty of abuse of office.
Council will also replace the late Deputy Mayor, Artwell Matyorauta who died last year.
Chairman of the outgoing commission which has been running council affairs; Tsunga Mhangami confirmed the development to TellZim News.
“We are scheduled to hold a special council meeting this week where the new mayor will be chosen. This week will be my last week in town.
“I did my best but it is up to the residents to give a rating because they know how the city has been and how it is at the current moment,” said Mhangami.
Simon Chipukira and Charles Simbi of Zanu PF are eying the mayoral and deputy mayoral posts whereas MDC-T’s Charles Chikozho and Willard Ndaguta are also seeking to win the same posts.
A confident Chikozho told TellZim News they are going win the posts and deliver good services to the people.
“This is no election. How can a team of six beat ten councillors? I have trust in my team since we have been fighting together for the past 19 months. I have targets to restore Gweru to sanity and improve revenue collection,” said Chikohzo.
No comment could be obtained from Chipukira and Simbi, with the latter continuously saying he was in a meeting.
Meanwhile, a defiant Kombayi on Tuesday said he had successfully filed a court application to challenge his dismissal.
“Yes, we have successfully filed our challenge against the dismissal and more information will be communicated in due course,” said Kombayi’s lawyer; Brian Gundu.local

Mapombi told you Gushungo 40 iyi inonetsa kukunda as long as mukuru achiripo. They reversed everything and ordered a re-run hanzi Chadzamira’s over 12 000 votes against Masanganise’s paltry 4000 are not enough for one to win an election.

By the way, Mapombi read an article recently where Julius Malema was suggesting that Zimbabweans should declare Mugabe a national disaster the same way Aids, Cholera in 2008, Chingwizi in 2014 and Cyclone Dineo were declared? Should we?
Mapombi is just asking fellow Zimbabweans and I am not suggesting that Malema is right. But to praise your wife Grace like that haaaaaa; I think that was too much. Kkkkkkk hanzi makamunzwaka fireworks kkkkkkk fireworks dzekutaura zvepabonde hazvoka?
And to say Dr Amai is now politically mature is shameful to say the least. Zvinonyadzisa kutaura izvi. Mapombi is always a gentleman handivanzi. The truth is Dr Amai is not yet mature unless if we are talking about kuwonyokera vanhu. Imagine spending hours speaking about how bees have sex in the air hahahahahaha. But Mugabe mahwani – hanzi a successor will be chosen by the people and the two vice-presidents are not fit to succeed him. Mapombi can confidently tell you what President Mugabe meant by that statement. It’s very simple – Mnangagwa is not wanted by the people; so the people, in this instance the youth and women’s league, will choose the successor who is none other than Dr Amai. Period!
You might say Mapombi ava kupenga manje but ndatokuudzai politics hatidzigone asi tinodzionera. And one thing Mapombi realised –zvenyu zvekuti the service chiefs vanojamuka hee-e this and that ndezvamanyepo! They also sing for their supper and anything that Mugabe says will have no one to object asi kutoti yes shefu, ndizvozvo chaizvo boss.
But if we had 1 000 people like Mapombi maybe Zimbabwe would be a different country today because ndinonzi mafirakureva and ndinofira zvokwadi. I would also want to agree with Malema that let us declare the CEO a national disaster then we start from there. Asi muchiti Chamatama chingaikonewa here kuitonga nyika iyi? 07 March 2017, NORTON – The Election Resource Centre (ERC) has called upon journalists to give their security top priority and uphold the highest forms of professionalism as the country hurtles towards elections next year.
Addressing news editors and journalists at a workshop on capacity building at Pakare Paye Arts Centre, ERC Technical Lead in Training and Outreach, Solomon Bobosibunu called for extreme caution.
“This is the most critical time. As we approach 2018, you need to be extra careful.  You must never venture into a hostile environment alone, just invite your colleagues from other media houses and know a way of retreat,” Bobosibunu warned.
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association representative, Cynthia Manjoro urged journalists to vigilantly expose human rights violations without putting themselves in the firing line.
“Journalists bear the responsibility of enlightening us on matters of human rights violations. Citizens need to be provided with all the information they require,” Manjoro said.
The workshop, which was attended by other stakeholders like Heal Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, saw journalists exchanging ideas on how to strike a balance between the serving the public interest and safeguarding their personal security.local

07 March 2017, CHIREDZI – Dozens of Zanu PF supporters who failed to travel to Matobo for President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday party have blamed factional shenanigans by Chiredzi Town Council chairperson, Francis Moyo, for the debacle.
Sources said Moyo, who is suspected of having a soft spot for Team Lacoste, and Zanu PF provincial youth league member Phillip ‘Dhalo’ Chiedza, had been tasked to handle logistics of the journey but reportedly deliberately botched the whole thing.
The sources also said it was not the first time Moyo had bungled, as he, with his other named friends, allegedly did the same during the President’s 92nd birthday bash held at the Great Zimbabwe monuments last year.
When contacted for comment, Moyo was coy with information, choosing only to say the speculations were absolute lies.
“The claims that we sabotaged the trip are all lies young man, this is all I can say,” said Moyo.
Sources, however, maintained that Moyo had received all the support needed to make the trip a success, with former Tongaat Hullet executive, Farai Musikavanhu reportedly pumping US$600 to buy fuel, pay toll gate fees and buy refreshments along the way.
It is said Musikavanhu was shocked when he was told the trip had been aborted under unclear circumstances.
 “This is politics my friend, Msikavanhu is dinning with the wrong people. His money is being used by Frango (Moyo) to advance his own political interests as he also intends to stand in Chiredzi West where the big boss (Musikavanhu) has set his sights. He will mourn when primary elections come. Wait and see,” said a source.
When contacted for comment, Musikavanhu admitted he was not happy with what happened.
“I am disappointed by the level of dishonest relating to this trip’s failure,” said Musikavanhu.
Chiedza, however, said the trip failed because they were US$200 short of the money that was needed.
“We failed to go to Matobo because we had a shortfall of US$200 which we wanted to use for the driver’s allowance and toll fees. We returned Mr. Musikavanhu’s money after the trip had failed,” said Chiedza.local
