ZAKA – Two women were last week caught red handed trying to exit Chingwanga shop with two litres of cooking oil each in between their legs and a man was caught trying to exit the shop with 2 litres cooking oil, rice and sugar without paying for them.
The trio had come for the open market held in Jerera on the 17th day of every month but ended up being taken to the police for theft.
The two women were caught right at the shop’s exit point by Chingwanga shop staff who had been seen them stuffing the goodies between their legs and covering them with their big flared skirts.
The incident happened after they had earlier unsuccessfully tried to steal from the same shop and others in Jerera.
Earlier this year, the women allegedly tried to steal a pack of Dettol in the same shop, a situation which caused them to be closely monitored when they returned.
Shortly after the incident, an unidentified man tried to walk out of the shop with a 2 litre bottle of cooking oil, 5kgs rice and 2kgs of sugar.
His movements were also monitored and when he was confronted at the check-out point he confirmed his intention to shoplift the goods.
They were later whisked away to the police base in Jerera and were later taken to Zaka police station.
Jerera residents said the two women had earlier been caught in Bheura shop using the same tactics to steal baked beans.news

Mphame pledges borehole for Bilashava

ZVISHAVANE – The chairperson and principal of Bert Properties, Cuthbert Mphame has promised to drill a borehole to the long suffering Bilashava primary school in Zvishavane before end of this year.
Bert Properties is a leading residential stand and property development company in Zvishavane.
Speaking at a price giving and early childhood development (ECD) graduation ceremony last week where he was the guest of honour, Mphame promised to end the perennial water woes at the school.
“I have heard your continuous cries for water at this school. I will therefore drill a borehole for you before the end of this year,” Mphame said.
Bilashava Primary School was founded in 1927 and has struggled with inadequate resources ever since.
Water problems have forced staff members at the school to travel to Zvishavane town, a distance of 13 kilometres, just to fetch water.
The pledge by Mphame was therefore met with joy by parents and all members of staff who expressed hope that the water problems could soon be a thing of the past.
District inspector for Public Works Commission, Aleck Mdhumo was also present at the prize giving ceremony and he witnessed the Mphame’s promise.
Mphame, however, refuted speculations that he aspires to be the Zvishavane-Ngezi constituency legislator in 2018.
He said his organisation’s works of charity were simply an exercise of corporate social responsibility to the Siboza community, and not in any way a strategy to gain political mileage.
“There is no vacancy yet and as such, I cannot aspire for that which does not exist,” Mphame said.news

Pair defrauds MFS Group of US$25 600 worth of asbestos

MASVINGO – Two Chitungwiza men last week appeared in court facing charges of fraud arising from the theft of 30 tonnes of asbestos roofing destined for Major Family Savings (MFS) Group  branches in Masvingo.
Arnold Mutandwa (32) and Fidelis Sibanda Mamunde (33) both of 14365 Unit O, Seke, Chitungwiza, who were represented by Collen Maboke of Ruvengo, Maboke and Company Legal Practitioners, appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Victor Mohammed.
Appearing for the State, James Murambiza told the court that the accused persons, in the company of their accomplices, Ferdinand Pikirai and Ngarunde Tapfumanei connived and diverted a 30-tonne truck loaded with asbestos sheets from Turnall Holdings in Bulawayo and took it to Harare.
The asbestos sheets were destined for MFS Group branches at Nyika and Jerera.
The accused persons allegedly took the truck to an open space near Coca Cola in Graniteside where they offloaded the asbestos sheets and proceeded to sell them.  The total value of the asbestos sheets was pegged at US$25 624. 75 and nothing was recovered.
It is said that Mutandwa later sold a Nokia 306 handset which he had allegedly used during the commission of the offence to Matanga Dambwa from whom it was recovered.
The accused persons later led police details to their accomplice, Tapfumanei, who is the proprietor of Kyle Hardware in Chitungwiza.
The pair was remanded to December 2, 2016 after being granted bail to the sum of US$100 each.
The State had originally opposed bail arguing that the accused persons were a flight risk as they had committed a similar offence before, and was also afraid that the pair may interfere with State witnesses.
The court heard that the accused persons have a previous case whereby they allegedly diverted a 30-tonne truck of timber from Wattle Company.
A docket against them was opened at Penhalonga Police Station and the matter is still to be finalised.news

The revival will run under the theme “Simuka udye kuti urege kukundwa nerwendo” a theme that was derived from 1st Kings 18.

CHIREDZI – Junior Member of Parliament for Chiredzi West Constituency, Shamiso Kapishe has urged students and teachers to shun any form of child abuse.
Kapishe made the call while addressing a gathering at an inter-primary speech, drama, and poetry competition which she organised at Chishamiso Community Hall last week.
Kapishe’s call comes in the wake of an increase of child abuse cases in the Lowveld.
She urged students to report any form of abuse to their teachers and to Childline.
“Abuse is on the increase especially here in the Lowveld. I encourage you to fight the scourge by reporting to Childline and at any police station…there are many cases of child abuse which are being reported at the police stations,” said Kapishe
“Recently Childline held its Destination Unknown campaign which was held at the Chiredzi Christian College so as to educate the youth about their future and to fight against abuse,” she said.
Kapishe said the idea was to educate young people on their rights while at school and at home.
“Let’s help the youth to know their rights; blowing out another person’s light does not make yours brighter. Teachers must stand up for the good of their children so as to make a change in the fight against child abuse,” she said.
Kapishe also spoke strongly against drug and alcohol abuse saying those are recipes for self-destruction.
“I urge young people not to abuse drugs for they will lose direction. The youth have to spend their time studying. I would be very happy if school clubs are formed to teach children on issues of drug abuse and children abuse,” she said.news

…maternity services suspended

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi’s council-run clinic, Tshovani Polyclinic, the only clinic which is run by Chiredzi Town Council, has gone for 12 months without running water from the tapes and, as a result, the maternity ward has since been closed, TellZim News can reveal.
Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Amadeus Shamu, Zimbabwe Diabetes Association President Dr John Chamunorwa Mangwiro, Chiredzi District Medical Officer, Dr David Tarumbwa, Chief Tshovani and other stakeholders toured the intitution last Monday and witnessed the rot.
A staffer at the clinic narrated how the clinic has been operating for the past one year without even a drop of water coming from the taps.
“The situation here is pathetic, we have been operating for many months without water and the clinic has suspended maternity services,” said the official.
The official also lamented the fact that apart from having inadequate water supply, the clinic has also been operating for many years without enough staff.
“It’s not water alone that we do not have but we are also understaffed. We are only ten and the clinic needs at least 24 staff members for two shifts but we only have one shift because of inadequate staff,” said the official.
Dr Mangwiro expressed regret of the situation and recommended that the government together with the council should look at the issue and improve services at the clinic.
“I think the situation here needs the government to work closely with the council and provide for the necessities so that the clinic here can be fully utilised. There are very good machines here for maternity, there is space but it’s being underutilised because of a simple matter,” said Mangwiro.
Chiredzi Districtict Medical Officer, Doctor David Tarumbwa echoed the same sentiments stating that there was need to revive the maternity ward at the clinic since expecting mothers do not have another option except Chiredzi General Hospital which is now functioning under severe strain.news

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi district has for the first time hosted the 2016 Wold Diabetes Day commemorations, a move which is set to raise diabetes awareness in the district.
More than 800 people in the district were screened for eye diabetes and blood pressure for free during the occasion, thanks to the efforts of the Zimbabwe Diabetes Association (ZDA).
The celebrations were graced by various medical experts, Chiredzi district Members of Parliament (MPs), Tongaat Hullet staff and other stakeholders.
Minister of Health and Childcare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, in a speech read on his behalf by Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu, said the 2016 world diabetes celebrations came at a time when the discovery of insulin was made.
Two Canadian physicians; Dr Frederick G. Banting and Professor John MacLeod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923 “for the discovery of insulin” after they had successfully tested their new ‘discovery’ on a severely diabetic 14-year-old boy in January 1922.
“This year’s commemorations come at a time when medical experts discovered insulin which was given to diabetes patients to prolong their lives,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.
He urged people to take care of their health by eating green vegetables and traditional foods.
“I urge people to eat lots of vegetables and traditional foods such as madora and harurwa and monitor their eating habits while exercising every day in order to reduce chances of becoming diabetic,” said Parirenytwa.
Members of the public who attended the event urged government to make provisions for free diabetes and BP testing at all health centres in the country.
“I am also grateful that we received a training here on what diabetes is and from now onwards, I can monitor my health,” said Monica Chaguma.
ZDA president, Dr John Chamunorwa Mangwiro encouraged people to monitor their health since diabetes is spreading in Zimbabwe at an alarming rate.
Medical experts estimate that millions more people would be diabetic at younger ages within the next few years due to the rapid spread of the chronic condition worldwide.news

Family appeals for US$50 000 for daughter’s liver transplant in India

MASVINGO – For the Botsa family of Rujeko in Masvingo, March 13, 2016 was a day of jubilation as they had received their bundle of joy, Thayel Makatendeka, who became their first daughter among four siblings.
Eight months from her birth, the family has already gone through a lot as the infant suffers from a rare liver condition called biliary atresia.
The girl needs an urgent operation to correct the defect through a liver transplant which, at the moment, can most conveniently be done in India.
Though the girl’s father; Kumbirai Richard Botsa (36) has offered a piece of his liver for his daughter’s survival, a total of US50 000 is still needed for the surgery; a figure too high for the family to afford.
Speaking to TellZim News, Thayel’s mother, Adelaide Botsa (33) said Thayel was born a healthy baby but her eyes started to turn yellow a few weeks after her birth.
“We went to the Masvingo General Hospital and we were told that it was jaundice and she was given medication for the condition,” said Adelaide.
“We administered the medication but there was no change, so the doctor took a scan and told us Thayel’s liver was 3,5cm bigger than normal. At five months, due to the persistence of the jaundice, we were then referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare,” Botsa said.
At Parirenyatwa, a doctor prescribed valgan cyclovir and Botsa said the very first day they started giving her the medication, she got worse as she started groaning, she no longer slept well and her tummy began to bulge.
“We then decided to go see a local doctor here in Masvingo who suggested that we go see a specialist in Harare since all the symptoms indicated that the baby had biliary atresia,” the mother said.
“We went back to Parirenyatwa Hospital and the baby was diagnosed with biliary atresia and we were told she needed an urgent liver transplant either in India or South Africa,” she said.
“When the doctor delivered the news to us, my husband and I cried because we knew we could not afford the money. My husband works as a loss controller at ZESA Masvingo and is the sole breadwinner,” Botsa said.
Botsa said her baby’s life now lies in well-wishers’ hands, and she appealed to the public to help them raise the $50 000 required for the surgery, travelling, admissions and other eventualities.
Well-wishers can donate the money on: Bank: CABS, Branch: CHIPINGE, Account No: 9040419140 or Ecocash on: 0774 100 122.news

Diaspora ready to fight for right to vote

Moses Ziyambi

People living outside the country say they have been emboldened by the government’s hardline stance against their right to vote and have now decided to fight for that right through litigation and political processes.
Government is often criticised for conveniently respecting the diaspora in as far as their remittances are concerned only to treat them with disdain when they ask for their political rights.
Many pressure groups, faith-based organisations and external wings of opposition parties gathered in Parktown, Johannesburg on November 12, 2016 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to commence a spirited fight to win the diaspora vote.
The gathering fell under the Diaspora Vote Coalition (DVC) and was facilitated by Bishop Paul Verryn, the renowned philanthropic clergyman of the Methodist Church.
In a press statement, the DVC, agreed “to fight with one voice and in one corner” so as to attain the right to vote for all people of Zimbabwe living outside the country.
The DVC include such groups as the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF), #This Flag, Tajamhuka, Global Zimbabwe, and external wings of Zapu, MDC-T, MDC-N and the Liberal Democrats of Zimbabwe (LDZ).
“The signing ceremony marks a clear statement of intent by Zimbabweans resident in the diaspora that they are ready to fight for this inalienable right, until it is realized,” reads the statement.
As part of its roadmap, the DVC resolved to pursue a number of campaigns, including approaching the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe for an order declaring provisions of the Electoral Act, that restrict  the right to cast postal votes to government employees and their spouses only , as unconstitutional.
The coalition will concurrently seek to interdict the State-aligned Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) from commencing any voter registrations activities, until the matter of the diaspora vote has been heard.
This will be accompanied by vigorous lobbying of the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), African Union (AU), Sadc and other relevant structures to support the cause.
ZEF chairperson and human rights campaigner, Advocate Gabriel Shumba said the diaspora vote is a non-negotiable right.
“The Constitution is unequivocally clear on the rights of all citizens to vote…. Arguments advanced so far to deny us this fundamental right are unconvincing. The alignment of the electoral laws to the new Constitution can be done in a jiffy,” said Adv Shumba.
Recently, ZEC head, Rita Makarau cited resource constraints as the reason why the diaspora cannot register to vote and cast their ballots in their countries of residence.
She said those who wanted to vote in 2018 should come back home and register to vote then come back again to vote in their wards, an expense that most diasporans cannot afford.news
