Local woman appointed FAO ambassador

MASVINGO – Elizabeth Mpofu, the Shashe Block farmer who recently led a farmers’ delegation to Spain, has been appointed Special Ambassador overseeing the Africa Region by the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).
Mpofu chairs the Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers’ Forum (ZIMSOFF) and is International General Co-ordinator for La Via Campesina, an organisation which represents farmers’ interests at international level.
The latest FAO appointment became effective on August 4 this year.
The scope of the position is related to FAO’s International Year for Pulses/Legumes, crops which not only provide protein for body building but also maintain and enhance soil fertility.
Mpofu is expected to travel across the African continent, meeting with farmers and promoting the cultivation of legumes as a sustainable method of improving the food and nutrition livelihoods of households in Africa.
“There has been over emphasis on the production of cereals and even our very own Command Agriculture does not recognise the importance of legumes as nutritional foods.
“The production of legumes is meant to reduce the incidence of malnutrition in Africa. It will also reduce the farmers’ dependence on cereal seeds which are produced by seed breeders.
ZIMSOFF national co-ordinator and a top ranking official in La Via Campesina, Nelson Mudzingwa spoke glowingly about legume plants.
“Farmers reduce costs by providing their own seed from the last harvest while they continue to enjoy a highly nutritional diet,” said Mudzingwa.
Mudzingwa said Mpofu’s efforts to uplift the farmer were recognised by FAO after collaborating with the organisation as La Via Campesina’s co-ordinator in most of their programmes.
“FAO was not aware that as a local farmers’ organisation, we were had explored other alternatives that bypass traditional seed breeding until we began collaborating. The collaborative effort has seen FAO being involved in most of our programmes,” Mudzingwa said.news

Mugabe must live and witness his defeat in 2018: Chibaya

Chibaya

ZVISHAVANE – Mkoba Member of Parliament (MP) Amos Chibaya said President Robert Mugabe should be in good health until 2018 to witness his heaviest defeat by Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T).
The outspoken MDC-T legislator was speaking at his party’s much awaited rally which was finally held in Zvishavane after it was blocked for five consecutive times by the police.
An attempt to hold a High Court-sanctioned rally earlier this month was violently broken by police and seven MDC-T members were arrested.
The seven were however freed by the Zvishavane Magistrate’s Court with lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights arguing that the police had no genuine case and had acted illegally by disrupting a duly-sanctioned event.
Chibaya said the ruling Zanu-PF had created a mess and had promised to create jobs yet jobs are still being lost and the economy is in trouble.
“Zanu PF has run out of ideas. Out of the 2.2 million jobs they promised, Mugabe has just managed to create one job; that is for his son in-law Simba Chikore at Air Zimbabwe.
“Where are the other 2 199 999 jobs? What we want is Shabanie Mine and Sabi Gold Mine to reopen,” said Chibaya.
He criticised the government’s plan to avert the cash shortages by printing bond notes which he said will not solve any of the country’s deep-rooted economic problems.
“Now, Zanu PF wants to take us back to 2007 by printing money which they are calling bond notes. How on earth can you print money when you are not producing? Bond notes are not a legal tender,” he said.
Speaking at the same rally which was attended by about 2000 people MDC-T Midlands South province’s Francisco Masendeke thanked the counts for sanctioning the rally and encouraged the youth to register to vote.news

Zanu PF worse than cancer

President Mugabe

MASVINGO – Opposition political parties have lamented the devastating impact that Zanu PF’s brutal rule has had on Zimbabwe saying it is worse than cancer and that the revolutionary party will not let go of power until they destroy and loot every resource left in the country.
Zimbabweans, the critics say, had high hopes for a better life at the attainment of independence from the British but were hit with a harsh reality that sometimes it is better to hug and kiss a hyena than be friends with a wolf in sheep clothing.
Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) national spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire said Zanu PF has looted from the people and robbed future generations of a brighter future.
“Zanu PF is a disease which has affected many Zimbabweans and I tell you it is worse than cancer. They have no remorse whatsoever for corroding the welfare of the general populace.
“The people in Zanu PF are looting the little resources left in the country with a passion. They are well aware that they have no future in politics hence they are scrambling to steal and secure their future,” said Mawarire.
He said the people thought that the regime will open up gates of opportunities but rather it opened up its pockets and they started distributing wealth amongst themselves.
“Zanu PF has a conference in December in Masvingo and they managed to raise $3.5 million in just three hours while it takes them forever to raise funds to complete the Tokwe Mukosi dam. It just shows the lack of seriousness and commitment to the people.
“Maybe it is the $15 billion that went missing which is just being pumped out,” said Mawarire.
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) spokesperson Obert Gutu said Zimbabweans never attained total independence because they are still being held captive by their fellow countrymen.
“What pains the most about the current state of affairs is that the people we thought liberated us are the ones who are suppressing us the most. They have ruined and rundown everything in their path.
“They have looted and stolen everything within their reach. The money which is being spent by Zanu PF in just one week is enough is enough to feed the whole drought stricken province for two months.
“While the Zanu PF elite will be feasting, wining and dining during their conference, about two million hungry villagers in Masvingo will be scavenging for their next meal. Greed and selfishness has taken over Zanu PF and are sucking the life out of ordinary people,” said Gutu.
Meanwhile, the war veterans led by Christopher Mutsvangwa have given President Mugabe a final chance to mend fences with them by dumping G40, a Zanu PF faction which they say is a cancer waiting to inflict further damage onto the country through massive looting.news

Masvingo’s multi-talented artists Ngoni Chinovava affectionately known in the arts industry as Baba Rah is riding high on his single track; ‘Muranda’.
The youthful artist told TellZim News that the song is motivated by real life situation and what transpires in our day to day living.
“I wrote the song ‘Muranda’ after I closely looked at the situation in our communities. One cannot be a good leader if he/she doesn’t have an understanding of what poor people or his followers are going through.
“Kana uchida kutungamira chita…wototanga wave muranda. Ungagoziva sei kuti zvinoda shirikadzi nenherera. If you want to be a leader you must first be a slave. If not so then how will you know what widows and orphans feel,” sang some of the lines in the song.
The track is one of his best and was produced by C Clear on Tears of life riddim in June this year.
Baba Rah promised to drop an album before the end of this year and said he can do whatever he can to make sure that his fans get good music. He also added that he would like to educate and entertain through arts.

…ten buses to carry people to the venues free of charge

Jubilee Mahlamvana

ZVISHAVANE – Renowned international evangelist Dag Heward-Mills, the founder and father of Healing Jesus Campaign, will conduct one of his 14 crusades in Zvishavane on November 25 – 26, 2016 at Gresham School grounds.
The nondenominational outreach, whose aim is to win as many souls as possible for Christ, has become a world-wide event which seeks to bring together people from all churches as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Speaking to TellZim News, Healing Jesus Campaign director for the Zvishavane gathering, Evangelist Mike Olariwadu said the goal was to spread the word of God by preaching and winning many souls as well as making those who do not believe come to Christ.
“We are on a mission to fulfil the word of God as well as preaching to his people so that those with ears will hear and believe that God is there,” Olariwadu said.
He expressed faith that many miracles will be witnessed at the crusade with the blind gaining their sight, the deaf hearing and the crippled walking.
“We believe that the hand of God will be at work to guide us so that everybody will start to worship Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour,” said Olariwadu.
Evangelist Olariwadu said he and his team was expecting a bigger number of people to attend the crusades all over the country than the 500 000 that was recorded in Nigeria, adding that Zimbabweans are a loving people who cherish peace.
There will be ten buses to ferry people in and around Zvishavane to and from the venue of the crusades free of charge.
Meanwhile, the Masvingo based Bishop Lincoln Dahwa, of the Gospel Revival International Ministries said the crusade will win many souls for Christ.
“The aim is to bring many people to Christ so that they can find purpose in their lives. The crusade is an inter-denominational outreach programme which seeks to bring people of different churches together in the name of Christ,” said Bishop Dahwa.
During the course of the crusade, he said, there will also be a pastors and leaders conference for all leaders of different churches in Masvingo.
“We feel that we are blessed as the people of Masvingo because we will host the crusade earlier than other places. We encourage people to come and hear the word of God from one of the most gifted preachers of our times.
“Those who seek any form of deliverance and healing should look forward to the Lord doing wonders in their lives,” said Bishop Dahwa.
Healing Jesus Campaign international director, Reverend Eldad Barber said God has remembered the land of Zimbabwe through the crusades.religion

Non-combatant ‘war vets’ in fierce combat to join gravy train

CHRISTOPHER MUTSVANGWA

CHIREDZI – Non-combatant ‘war veterans’ last week hailed President Robert Mugabe for making indications that he may soon take them aboard the patronage gravy train, as the frenzied jostling to put snouts in the feeding trough intensifies.
Addressing a meeting held last Saturday at Chitsanga Hall in Chiredzi, chairperson of the Non-Combatants Cadres Association (NCCA) Trycose Matirongo said his organisation was pleased that Mugabe had finally called to meet them.
He declared that the political game plan had changed in Zanu PF implying that unlike before, they were no longer substitutes in the Zanu PF patronage chess game as they were now next in line for their turn at the feeding trough.
“This is a match which used to be played with us as substitutes. We all are equal players of the team now so there is no way we cannot benefit. The President himself has said he will meet us,” Matirongo said.
“On behalf of the association, I would like to thank the President because he will meet us soon as non-combatants. We are going to benefit as all other war veterans have benefited.
“If the others did benefit from the land, we must also benefit because we are all the same. We fought for this country,” said Matirongo.
President Mugabe has recently moved to establish new alliances with former war collaborators as his fall-out with the Chris Mutsvangwa-led war veterans persists.
Hopes have since risen among the so-called collaborators that perks and privileges hitherto reserved for war veterans will soon be extended to them as well.
“We promise to stand with the party through good and bad times. We have never failed our president for he has done so many things and because he has promised to meet with us, we will keep on voting for him.
“Even if we were to go to any other political party, we would never get what Zanu PF has promised us. It’s good we all stick as one just as we were it time of war because the party made us who we are today,” Matirongo said.news

ZVISHAVANE – Bulawayo football giants, Highlanders popularly known as Bosso’s fans will never learn if events of last week in Zvishavane are to go by.
FC Platinum’s coach, Norman Mapeza was hit by a missile thrown by a Bosso fan when he was celebrating his team’s second goal scored by Walter Musona.
Mapeza had to be stretchered from the pitch in order to get medical attention from FC Platinum’s medical team.
The match was stooped for about 27 minutes and resumed when Mapeza came back with his arm bandaged.
The violent Highlanders fans had come to the VIP stand to seek shelter after a heavy down pour and took advantage of getting closer to the FC Platinum technical team and threw missiles into the pitch after Musona dribbled past the Bosso defender and Arial Sibanda their goalie and tapped in the second goal into an empty net.
FC Platinum went on to win the match by 3 goals to nil, Charles Sibanda put the final nail on the Bosso coffin by firing a long range shot that gave the goalie no chance.
The first goal had come from the hard tucking defensive midfielder Jerald Takwara.
Speaking to TellZim News, FC Platinum spokesperson Chido Chizondo said Mapeza had fully recovered from the injuries, adding that such behaviour should not be condoned in football.news

Makamure back at MDC-T

Mare

… Mare likely to follow suit

Tatenda Shunyai

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) structures in Masvingo are reported to be in quandary with some of its bigwigs confirming that they have officially left the party and traced their steps back to their former political homes while others are distancing themselves from the Joice Mujuru led party to stand as independent candidates.
Former Gutu East legislator Ransome Makamure has already dumped ZimPF while former Chiredzi West legislator Moses Mare is said to be on the verge of re-joining the Tsvangirai-led Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T).
Heya Shoko has also officially parted ways with the fledgling party and is now in the race to win back the Bikita West parliamentary as an independent candidate.
Shoko held the seat on an MDC-T ticket  between 2008 and 2013 before losing it to now incarcerated Munyaradzi Kereke.
Makamure confirmed his new move saying he is now officially back at MDC-T  as an ordinary party card carrying member.
“I have gone back to my actual home to finish what we started back in 1999. MDC-T is the only party that is ready to challenge the system and it has the genuine change agenda and it is change-oriented,” said Makamure.
Though not confirming his move to MDC-T, Mare, on the other hand, gave a strong hint that he may be missing life in his former party.
“I haven’t made that decision yet, but I will assess the situation closely and make a decision soon. Only time will tell if I will be leaving or not. There are a lot of problems and confusion in the People First and because of that, you cant rule out that I might re-trace my footsteps back to Tsvangirai.
“As for now I am still assessing the best move,” said Mare.
Mare who is believed to be an opinion leader in Chiredzi is said to be leading a group of seven others who might join him in going back to MDC-T.
ZimPF Masvingo Acting provincial spokesperson, Jeffreyson Chitando, criticised the ‘deserters’ as people who had never shown genuine commitment to the party.
“Makamure was never active in our party activities and he did not attend even our rallies. He only attended one rally and he was there to see Mai Mujuru. We wish him well with the MDC-T,” Chitando said.
On Shoko, he said he was not yet aware that the former MDC-T MP had abandoned ZimPF.
“I don’t even know that Shoko has left ZimPF, he never mentioned that to me,” said Chitando.
The development came four weeks after this newspaper published that almost all former MDC-T MPs were planning to dump ZimPF to rejoin Tsvangirai.
Information gathered by this publication indicate that there will be more problems after the Nomination Court announces candidates running for the Bikita by-election.
“You will see People First supporting an independent candidate in Bikita because Kudakwashe Gopo was imposed by Makova. There was no openness in choosing the candidate for Bikita by-election. We will never allow Makova to do whatever he wishes hence we will back the independent candidate … just wait and see how we are going to dump Gopo. There will be drama as we will join other opposition political parties in supporting an independent candidate,” said ZimPF official who preferred anonymity.news

Zvishavane – The Zvishavane Youth Council (ZYC) shone at the recently held National Youth Service Pass-out parade that was held at Dadaya Training Camp, surprising many people by their remarkable works of art.
The youths exhibited their art gallery products during the event and people began to marvel after noticing that there was enormous talent in the small town of Zvishavane.
