Masvingo City Council turns down Zanu PF donation plea

Masvingo city council has once again refused to give in to Zanu PF’s demands money to fund party activities as they recently turned down the request for donations towards the national conference slated for next week in Masvingo.
Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze

Early this year, the city fathers turned down another request to fund the 21st February movement celebrations but the persistent Zanu PF tried its luck again for the conference but to no avail.
Mayor Hubert Fidze confirmed that the council received the letter asking for donations towards the Zanu PF conference from the Minister of State, Shuvai Mahofa’s office.
“The letter came but as the council we have been very clear on our position of not getting involved in political party activities,” said Fidze.
The Finance committee had an urgent meeting last week to deliberate on the letter but they agreed to stick to principle.
Ward 4 councillor Godfrey Kurauone who is on record for defending the council’s stance on political party activities and almost came close to a fist fight with Ward 10 councillor Lovemore Mufamba over the 21st February movement celebrations donations, said they will not be influenced to blow the ratepayers’ money.
“The council has and will always stand guided by principles. We cannot temper around with people’s money by giving  donations to a political party.
“Imagine if we do that with all the political parties in this country, we will be left with no cent for service delivery. People need accountability for their money and how will they react when they find out we give their money as donations to political parties while service delivery suffers,” said Kurauone.
He added that the council is struggling to settle salaries for their workers hence they do not have a single cent to divert.
“We do not want to set a bad precedence by giving money to political parties. There are other pressing matters that need more money and we are struggling to make ends meet. We are also struggling to pay salaries for our employees so it is better to channel the little we have to service delivery,” Kurauone said.

MP Marapira angers Zano villagers

Masvingo North legislator Davies Marapira last week failed to turn up at a meeting in Zano where villagers had been promised rice and had to wait from morning till late night hoping to get a meal for the day in the drought stricken province.
Davis Marapira

Food aid has been used for political mileage in the province with opposition members crying foul as they are usually left out when the food aid is distributed.
The Zano villagers were furious by the mid-afternoon but had high hopes of their legislator showing up with the much needed food aid.
Some of the villagers told TellZim News that whenever there is a talk about food you have to be there with your whole family so that you can get more.
However, it was a different day at Zano last week as villagers spent the whole day waiting for Marapira who failed to turn up.
“The situation in our homes is critical and we are finding it difficult to put food on the table. When our leaders call for meetings to donate food aid, we leave no one at home because some of us have big families and the little we get per person will do us no good.
“We came here as early as 8am and we never moved because we feared to be left out. We stayed put until it got dark and all hope was lost. We were promised rice,” said one villager.
Marapira told TellZim News that there was  no need for the people to cry foul since the meeting was rescheduled for another day.
“Why would people want to make a big deal out of this issue? We communicated with the people that there would be no rice donation on the day in question. There is a lot of rice coming to the people and we are going to give them an early Christmas present. There was a big queue where we get the rice and priority was being given to schools hence we loaded late,” said Marapira.
When the rice eventually comes, Marapira said he was going to everybody regardless of political affiliation.

Gapare relivess jail experience

MUTIMUREFU – Former Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) Masvingo Urban ward 8 councillor and now Zanu PF member, Misheck Gapare who was recently given bail after he challenged both his conviction and sentence following his two months stay in Mutimurefu prisons told this publication that jail life exposed him to the worst experience in his life.
Misheck Gapare

Gapare, who was sentenced to two years over stands scam involving 50 residential stands, told TellZim News that prison life is something that he would not want to be reminded by anyone.
“When you are a prisoner, you are a prisoner like any other convict. You do not choose what to do except to follow instructions and do what other prisoners would be doing,” said Gapare.
Despite the challenges and jail pains he experienced, Gapare indicated that he did not stop dreaming big as he explained of himself continuing to think about his family and his business while in jail.
While in Mutimurefu – about 20km along Masvingo-Mutare highway, Gapare would not let a single day passing without him thinking of business ideas he wanted to implement after his release.
“When I was in jail, I was thinking about my family and my business. I didn’t stop dreaming big because of the circumstances. I have a target of finishing all my pending projects. My projects have been disturbed for that time but all will be in place soon,”he said.
Gapare said he has nothing to worry on his case before the courts saying God would rescue him from the seemingly impending danger.
“I believe in God, it is God who created the land and I know God will give the final decision,”  said the ever confident Gapare.

Candidates for Bikita West by-election speak out

0

Chabaya, Gopo and Shoko

Upenyu Chaota

With the stage having already been set for the Bikita West by-election, ground work has already begun with all the three candidates showing optimism of a clean sweep victory.
President Robert Mugabe chose January 21, 2017 as the date on which the by-election will be held.
The nomination court will sit tomorrow (25 November) to decide on whether Zanu PF’s Beauty Chabaya, Zimbabwe People First’s (ZimPF) Kudakwashe Gopo and an independent Heya Shoko are eligible to contest in the election.
The election will act as a yard stick for ZimPF since it will be their first election in opposition politics.
Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) have remained glued to their shrewd “No Reforms, No Elections” campaign but have pledged support for any candidate outside Zanu PF.
TellZim News talked to all the three contestants to hear about their state of preparedness and what they have to offer for the people of Bikita.
Former MDC-T Bikita West legislator  Shoko who is contesting as an independent candidate claims the people of Bikita have approached him saying they wanted  a real leader of his calibre.
“I have once represented Bikita West when I was with the MDC-T. The people saw what I did during my tenure of office and they feel I am the rightful candidate.
“They have already given me their support and who am I to deny a calling from the people that I worked with for a long time. I have already met with most of the electorate and have liaised with the traditional leadership who have given me overwhelming support,” said Shoko.
He said he is perfectly poised for a landslide victory because he has no competition.
“Zanu PF panicked when I announced my candidature because they know I am a big threat. I am well experienced for this job and the rest of the candidates should compete for second and third positions because the first is already taken,” said Shoko confidently.
TellZim News spent two days failing to get in touch since her mobile number was reachable as she was reported to be holding a series of rallies in rural Bikita.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial political commissar Jeppy Jaboon said his party was in charge of Bikita.
“You can talk to Chabaya sometime later because as we speak, she is having a series of rallies in the constituency. I can tell you that we have never witnessed such huge number of people coming to our rallies. Even those from other opposition political parties are coming back to Zanu PF. There is no way Chabaya can lose in this by-election,” said Jaboon.
Chabaya of Zanu PF who defied all odds in the primaries and outwitted heavy weights like Elias Musakwa said she was an experienced politician who participated in Zanu PF activities well before she even knew that Sadza was the staple food for Zimbabwe..
“You know what, I am a seasoned politician …even Minister (Shuvai) Mahofa can be my witness. I started participating in politics when I was a toddler before I even knew how to eat Sadza – I was already in politics,” said Chabaya.
“We are going to prove a point that Zanu PF is the only party in the country and its popularity will extent to the 2018 elections. We have begun campaigns and I tell you people cannot wait to cast their ballots,” said Chabaya.
“I urge those in opposition parties to come home to Zanu PF. We have witnessed people from ZimPF coming back to Zanu PF because I am a better candidate,” added Chabaya.
Gopo of ZimPF said when it comes to popularity and appeal to the voters in Bikita West, not even one of his competitors can even come close.
Gopo is moving with the campaign slogan, “Let’s Make Bikita West Great Again”.
“Ever since Munyaradzi Kereke was having his days in the courts, I have been campaigning in the constituency and believe me, when I say I have covered every corner and people are happy.
“If elections were held last week I would be a legislator by now. Even if Zanu PF comes to drill boreholes on every house, they will not get any votes. We have done a lot of projects in schools and we are still doing more.
“Together we will make Bikita West great again,” said Gopo.
The candidate for National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) Mudorck Chivasa could not be reached for a comment as his mobile phone went unanswered up to the time of going to print,
The environment remains peaceful and no acts of violence have been reported yet.news

The seat fell vacant after former legislator, Munyaradzi Kereke, was slammed with a ten year prison sentence for raping his 11 year old niece at gun point.

Grade six pupil graduates as pastor

Pastor PraiseGod Kiwiti receives his certificate during the graduation

…receives best student award at graduation

Exsto Makunzva

HARARE – A grade six pupil at Belvedere Primary School has made history when he graduated on November 13, 2016 after completing a two year theology diploma programme with Africa Multi-nation for Christ College (AMFCC).
PraiseGod Kiwiti (11) said he was happy that he managed to respond to the calling of God without wasting time.
The young boy surprised other graduates when he received the best student award, beating his classmates who were old enough to be his parents.
AMFCC Evening School coordinator, Dr Charles Mbisa said Praisegod was the youngest graduate to ever make it through the college.
“He is the youngest graduate to pass through our hands. Just like the Biblical David who got called at a very tender age, Praisegod has done the same. We wish him all the best in carrying out the Lord’s work,” said Dr Mbisa.
Praisegod made it clear he was ready to go into the field and start to do the work of God.
“I am happy that I managed to respond to my calling, God started calling me when I was even younger than what I am today. I kept on telling my parents about how God was speaking to me through dreams until they encouraged me to enrol with AMFCC Evening School,” said PraiseGod.
His father, Virimai Kiwiti, a pastor with United Family International Church (UFIC), said he was happy that his son had followed his footsteps.
“My wife and I are happy parents today. I cannot believe it. We have accompanied the young boy to his graduation and I also graduated here at AMFCC two years ago. The boy used to tell me his dreams and I realised that God was calling him.
“I then encouraged him to enrol with the same college that moulded me and look, here we are today witnessing the youngest graduate ever,” said Kiwiti.
He said the young boy is intellectually gifted as he receives prizes each year at his school, and is expecting four units when he sits for his Zimsec Grade 7 examinations next year.
AMFCC is a Bible College that was founded by Archbishop Ezekiel Handinawangu Guti of ZAOGA Forward in Faith and it trains pastors from any church.news

‘We will hire soldiers in 2018’

…Zanu PF worried by new voters’ roll system
…Remember what Mjr-Gen. Rugeje did in 2008

TellZim Reporter

MASVINGO – Zanu PF’s most senior member in Masvingo province and Psychomotor minister, Josaya Hungwe has said his party will not hesitate to hire the services of soldiers to thwart the opposition’s chances and make sure the ruling party retains power in the 2018 elections.
Speaking at the inter district meeting at Masvingo Polytechnic last Saturday, Hungwe said when the worst scenario comes,  Zanu PF was prepared to go to war against opposition political parties.
Hungwe was quick to remind the people how army Major-General Engelbert Rugeje helped Zanu PF in the run-up to the June 2008 presidential election runoff campaign.
Mjr-Gen Rugeje was instrumental in the campaign which is widely viewed as the most violent of all elections since 1980 and, at one point, he fired his gun at Mucheke stadium to intimidate the electorate.
“Yes, we can go to war. We can hire our army…our soldiers can come in to help us. We will never allow opposition political parties to rule this country. We are going to have President Mugabe as our candidate in 2018 and his predecessors must have war credentials.
“Don’t forget what Rugeje did in Masvingo in 2008…we can call him again in 2018,” said Hungwe.
Hungwe, who mocked Dzikamai Mavhaire for joining the Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF), said there was nothing sinister if the regime hires soldiers to help fight the ‘enemy’.
“We must make sure that People First does not win… this is very Biblical because it started in the Bible where the army was being hired to defend the King. In our case, President Mugabe is our King hence the need to use soldiers to defend him and his party,” said Hungwe.
Acting Zanu PF provincial chairperson, Amasa Nhenjana told the same gathering that the ruling party was worried by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (ZEC) intention to introduce polling station based voters’ roll.
He said the system could help the opposition and cost the ruling party in the elections.
“We are not happy with the proposed system. As a party, we think the new system will have a lot of loopholes…they might want to rig elections in the name of new system. Let us be very vigilant and reject that proposal,” said Nhenjana.
Masvingo province unanimously endorsed President Mugabe as the Zanu PF candidate for 2018 elections.
The inter-district meeting was held for members to brief each other on the state of preparedness ahead of the party’s 16th conference to be hosted by Masvingo province in December.
The provincial party structures have already endorsed President Mugabe as the Zanu-PF candidate for the 2018 presidential elections.news

Engage political parties on demos – ZimPF

0

Mawarire

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) led by Joice Mujuru has attributed the failure of recent social media-coordinated demonstrations on poor coordination saying the organisers have no powers, outside of political parties, to mobilise people.
The party says organisers of those protests need to rope in opposition parties because they have a solid following.
ZimPF says Zanu PF has become immune to poorly organised and attended demonstrations by activists who are out to make money than fight for a cause.
Recent attempts by such pressure groups like #ThisFlag, #Tajamuka and #ThisFlower to organise mass protests against the government have largely failed.
Giving reference to the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) successful mass demonstration held in Harare a few months ago, ZimPF national spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire said it is high time Zimbabweans mature if they want to send a message to a regime that has imprisoned them.
“We cannot continue repeating things that have failed. These activists have no capacity to mobilise people for a meaningful demonstration. People cannot be mobilised on social media, you do not do that.
“This is the reason why there is always poor turnout at all the demonstrations organised outside political parties. It is high time we become mature and engage organisations which have followings like the church and various political parties,” said Mawarire.
He said private citizens have no capacity whatsoever to mobilise people for a meaningful demonstrations.
“Let us rope in everyone and agree on modalities. The political parties have to be part of all the demonstrations since they command most of the people. We should desist from relying much on social media because it will not change anything.
“Just because you are a Mawarire and good at recording a video with your phone does not mean you can mobilise people. The shutdown which happened on August 6 was not a doing of any online activist but only coincidence came to play hence they claimed responsibility,” Mawarire said.
The August 6, 2016 demonstrations, dubbed the ‘National Shutdown’ were spontaneous citizen-driven protests whose success was attributed largely to the efforts of now exiled #ThisFlag leader, Pastor Evan Mawarire.
Mawarire said people should learn from Itai Dzamara who failed to rally people behind him and should look to political parties since most of the activists lack resources.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Dr Takavafira Zhou added his voice saying the social media movements are giving confidence to the regime that they can crush demonstrations.
“We are equally to blame for the crisis we have at hand. We have become competitors for donor appeal rather than work for a better Zimbabwe. You cannot organise a demonstration where a handful of people come, the police will beat you.
“The police will not beat people if they turn out in their numbers. It is time to be sober-minded because Mugabe will not be intimidated by a small group of people,” said Zhou
He added that opposition parties should work on a coalition now because Zanu PF is like an octopus which can resurrect towards elections and win again.news

Robbers crush girl’s head

Brighton Chiseva

Nyajena – An eight-year-old girl from Changa village, chief Nyajena area, died after she was hit on the head by a giant rock during a botched robbery on Thursday last week, TellZim News is informed.
The robbers were apparently trying to gain entry into the house when they decided to smash the door with a boulder after the family sleeping inside refused to respond to their orders to open the door.
Margret Changa was sleeping together with her mom Noria Dovi and her other siblings who refused to open the door when the robbers demanded her to do so.
It is said after being hit by the rock, the girl bleed from the nose and mouth and it is suspected her death was caused by the wounds sustained and the severe loss of blood.
A close relative to the deceased narrated that they suspected the robbers had intended to only smash open the door but the rock ended up hitting the young girl and fatally injuring her.
“She was rushed to Nyajena Rural Hospital that night where she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” said the relative
He went on to say that the robbers ran away when Dovi screamed for help from neighbours.
The family suspected that the robbers were after groceries since the deceased’s father who is based in South Africa had just visited his family.
No arrests have been made and the two are still at large.news
