Kernen City happy with twinning progress

Itai Muzondo
MASVINGO – The German city of Kernen is happy with the progress in developmental projects they are sponsoring in Masvingo through the twinning association.
Projects facilitated by the German city since the twinning include construction of Runyararo Clinic, infrastructure development at Mucheke Old People’s Home and Alpha Cottages, loan facilities through Zambuko Trust and the donation of an ambulance to the ancient city.
Speaking at a reception held for the visiting delegation last week at the Civic Centre; Christian Fleischer, on behalf of the team comprising Astrid Fleischer; Klaus Kopp and Karin Kopp, said they were happy with the progress of the projects they are facilitating.
“This 25-year old relationship has been long and fruitful. This is no longer just a partnership but mature friendship. We really appreciate how we have grown to learn from each other. The project tours we had earlier on were very interesting and all is running well,” Fleischer said.
“Discussions on new ideas were also fruitful. New ideas to create homes and make the city green among others. They are actually ideas that lead to a better future and we are glad to be a partner. With the progress we have witnessed on the ground, this may emerge the best relationship between cities across the globe. Masvingo has actually become our second home,” he added.
Karin Kopp added, “Every time we visit, we gather videos which we give to our son back home to edit and produce a video story of all we would have seen. That is a video that will show areas that need improvement. The video is circulated in the city motivating German locals to come in with donations we hand over for the betterment of our twin city, Masvingo.”
Masvingo-Kernen Association incoming chairperson Pascal Mudzikisi said the association is paying school fees for 100 pupils at Bondolfi.
“The Kernen city has done a lot for Masvingo. Besides all other programmes you have heard of, the association also pays school fees for 100 pupils at Bondolfi Primary School. This should also stand as a challenge to the local business community to chip in and assist the less privileged. To our brothers and sisters in Kernen, please don’t tire, we really appreciate your assistance,” said Mudzikisi.news

Masvingo to host belated day of the African child commemorations

Upenyu Chaota
On June 16, 1976 hundreds of South African children were massacred by the South African government after they took to the streets protesting against the forced learning of Afrikaans as a lingua-franca as opposed to native languages and since then, June 16 has been earmarked as the Day of the African Child.
In Zimbabwe, the commemorations are officiated by the junior parliamentarians who are sworn in by the President and this year it was held on June 18 in Harare.
The commemorations are held in all the provinces on different dates as per the plans of the organising committees and in Masvingo they will be held on July 29 at the Civic Centre.
This year’s commemorations are running under the theme, “Investing in Children and Youth for an Empowered Society and Growing Economy in Order to Prevent Conflict and Crisis and Protect Children’s Rights.
Masvingo’s Provincial Youth Development Officer, John Mbizvo said they are already in the final stages of the preparations and hopes for a successful event.
“The actual day for the commemorations is June 16 every year and here in Zimbabwe we normally do belated commemorations since we wait for the junior parliamentarians to be sworn in.
“This day is dedicated to the children who were killed for demanding their rights. There youths died for believing in their roots. They refused to let go of their culture and this is the message we carry on the commemorations.
“Youths should not be ashamed of who they are. They should be proud of being Zimbabweans,” said Mbizvo.
He said the introduction of junior parliamentarians was instrumental in facilitating the participation of youths in local governance.
“We also teach them about their rights as enshrined in the constitution. The youths are the future so we have to invest and protect the future. The event will be held at the Civic Centre and shall be attended by about 2 000 school children from the seven districts of Masvingo Province.
“Zimbabwe celebrates this day annually at national, provincial and district levels so that all children across the divide are aware of their rights,” said Mbizvo.
He appealed for assistance from the corporate world so that the event will be successful.news

‘Zanu PF’s drought of thinking’

Upenyu Chaota
Former Energy minister who has now joined opposition politics with the Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) outfit, Dzikamai Mavhaire, has lambasted the lack of thinking which has now hit Zanu PF saying they are only concerned with pleasing the First Family’s familial needs and are deaf to the plight of the general Zimbabweans.
Mavhaire, who is the National Organising Secretary for ZimPF, said greed and selfishness have taken over the ruling party and senior members are on a looting spree of the little resources left while they have become bankrupt on how to revive the economy.
The Zimbabwean economy has plummeted over the years with no clear solution on the horizon and the unemployment levels have reached unprecedented heights.
“Zanu PF is now clueless. There is now drought of thinking at all levels of decision making. It is now a sinking ship but they want to take all Zimbabweans with them.
“A minister will wake up and try to experiment with Zimbabweans without anyone questioning him. As ZimPF we say no to that and we are going to save Zimbabwe from sinking with Zanu PF.
“When their ideas fail, they all hide under the sanctions pretext which has led us to where we are today. There are no sanctions to talk about but bad policies and poor governance,” said Mavhaire.
This Saturday, ZimPF leader, Dr Joice Mujuru, will address her star rally at Mucheke Stadium where she is expected highlight the developments she has in store for the people of Masvingo.
“Dr Mujuru will address the irrigation issue in the Lowveld. Sugarcane production is under threat since Zanu PF is now grabbing the productive land without any clue on how to use it. Masvingo has the highest number of cattle in Zimbabwe but there is no market. The issue of the Cold Storage Company (CSC) will also be addressed since it’s an opportunity to create employment for many people.
“Mujuru will also talk about our policy framework. Zanu PF is doing everything in their power to get votes but we are guided by principles. You cannot wake up and say you want to give people stands on land which could be used for other developmental things. We don’t need houses everywhere, there has to be a plan,” said Mavhaire.
Mavhaire said Zimbabwe will be great again when relations with the international community have been restored. He said they will engage everyone including the West if they get into power.
ZimPF Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Rtd Col Kudzai Mbudzi, added his voice saying Zanu PF is out of touch and President Mugabe has outgrown his usefulness.
“Zimbabwe now needs urgent intervention for its survival. Mujuru has, therefore, declared that 2016 is a year of the establishment of our party which will be the custodian of the political aspirations of our people. The people and the party shall be one entity, working together for the greater good.
“Rebuilding the nation under Mujuru is not a political statement but a way of life. Through the adaptation and implementation of the Blueprint to Unlock Investment and Leverage for Development (BUILD), the hope and dignity of the Zimbabweans can be restored.
“The time to blame sanctions is over. Zanu PF has run down the economy and it is time to rebuild,” said Mbudzi.news

Zaka councilors clueless – MPs

Brighton Chiseva
ZAKA – ZANU PF councilors in Zaka are clueless and do not know how council business is conducted, four legislators for Zaka constituencies have said.
Zaka legislators Paradzai chakona (Zaka Central), Vincent mawere (Zaka West), Robson Mavhenyengwa (Zaka North) and Samson Mukanduri (Zaka East) condemned their councilors for being subdued by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) councilors despite being the majority.
Speaking at a meeting held at Jerera Council Hall last week, Chakona, Mavhenyengwa, Mukanduri and Mawere took turns to attack their councilors who are being dominated by only two MDC councilors.
“They discuss first before they come and you are only asked to second things that have been discussed already,” said Chakona.
He said that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Majaura was under the councilors ad should not make decisions alone. Chakona said Majaura should be whipped into line and if he fails they should fire him and replace him with a more competent person.
The councilors were also accused of employing unqualified personnel at the council like the Engineer, and were told that they had the power to hire and fire workers who are incompetent.
“You councilors have the power over the council grader not us but people blame us over its centralized use, and beware of (Peter) Imbayarwo, he is very clever and has a lot of influence,” said Mavhenyengwa.
Zaka Assistant District Administrator Victor Zinanga also accused the councilors for failure to understand how council operates.
“We need to organize an orientation for the councilors so that they know how it operates because they really do not know how council operates,” said Zinanga.
Analysts, however, said it is rather the entire Zanu PF which has failed the nation and the MPs should stop accusing councilors for they lacked orientation from the party. How can one talk of organizing an orientation now when the councilors are only left with less than two years before elections, one analyst questioned.news

Stop urinating on us – PTUZ

. . . US$100 forward payment an insult
Upenyu Chaota
MASVINGO – The Progressive Teacher’s Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) slammed government for its favouritism on uniformed forces over other civil servants after the former got their full salaries while teachers received an advance payment of $100 last week.
PTUZ condemned government’s divide and rule tactic and said teachers will embark on a massive industrial action, with immediate effect, if their plight is not addressed.
PTUZ president Dr Takavafira Zhou said the government has failed teachers and it was time to take action because negotiating with them will not help in any way.
“It is shocking the way in which government selectively treats its civil servants. The uniformed forces get first preference while teachers suffer. Shamelessly, government has decided to give teachers an advance of US$100 saying it will aid their travelling to work,” said Dr Zhou.
“This is shameless and as PTUZ we say no to US$100. Our teachers have to eat, pay bills among other things. How can they go to work when they are hungry? The government doesn’t dare uniformed forces but they dare us and we say enough is enough,” Dr Zhou added.
He said teachers are not machines who can be oiled up and will be good to go, but are human beings who need resources to operate.
“We have always said the government has money and can get money if it wants to but the problem is that greedy and selfishness has taken over. Teachers are people who have to provide for their families and most of them have taken loans so the $100 will be swallowed by the loan and nothing will be left. We are tired of a government which urinates on us and make us believe it is raining,” said Zhou.
He insisted that President Robert Mugabe should trim his cabinet and remove all unnecessary posts that are meant to reward his cronies.
“What is even more infuriating is the recklessness of some of the ministers who talk of huge sums of money as pocket change to them while teachers are suffering,” Zhou added.
Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) secretary general John  Mlilo said they have been patient with the government for so long and they cannot keep going to work unless they are taken seriously.
“We have been incapacitated from all directions. We want to be treated equally. This time around we will not go to work unless the government addresses our plight. Our patients has run out.
‘We have been patient for a long time. Our pay dates have been shifted over and over again and we have been quiet. Our bonuses have been delayed and we kept quiet. It’s been a long time since our remunerations have been reviewed and we are tired,” said Mlilo.
The Ministry of labour pleaded with the civil servants to be patient while the government sourced the money for their remunerations.
“The fact of the matter is that the government would like to pay salaries when they are due. There is no reason to delay the salaries but the current cash flow challenges have militated against the government’s obligations to civil servants and other stakeholders owed.
“We appeal to the workers to understand the government situation,” said acting labour minister Supa Mandiwanzira.news

Chaendera Sisters speak on their success

Lloyd Shunje

Mashava – Contemporary mbira artists, Nyarai and Chenai Chaendera, who are making trends in the entertainment circles as Chaendera Sisters, have disclosed their dream of growing big, saying their music does not fade easily.
In an interview with TellZim News, the upcoming jazz artists said musicians like the late Chiwoniso Maraire and Thomas Mapfumo were their source of inspiration.
“Our father is a big mbira music fan so that’s the music we grew up listening to and is the heartbeat of our family.
“Starting off with hosho and makwakwa lessons during family gatherings, other African instruments like mbira became our favourite,” said Nyarai.
Though the two sisters, who are in their twenties, appear elitist, they have urged the young to observe their culture regardless of outside influences.
“We are very much in touch with our traditions though some people tend to have opposite impressions of us. We are also models but we keep it African in whatever we do. If we try to reproduce foreign genres, nobody will produce our own genres for foreign audiences,” Chenai said.
The duo advised fellow artists to produce meaningful content that is relevant to the conditions of the day rather than concentrate on often dirty lyrics that seem to be popular with mainstream music nowadays.
“Our culture has been affected mostly by the entertainment sector as most artists sing dirty content which play no part in developmental efforts. It is our duty as artists to sing about development and not to be seen as glamourising immorality and drug abuse,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Chaendera Sisters who have since become the heart of Liquids Bar International’s Sunday Night Live are cruising on their only album; Ruvara which boasts tracks like Muroora and Kuenda Mbire.entertainment

Hats off to Zhakata! Mapombi loves his music and anotodawo mugove wake because anzwa nekukanga waya. By the way, Mapombi heard the man himself The President of the Republic Of Zimbabwe, the Commander of the Defence Forces, the Chancellor of all Universities who is also the First Secretary of the ruling party Zanu PF, the former chairperson of African Union (AU) and Southern African Development Committee (SADC), His Excellence President Robert Gabriel Mugabe was in the province, in Chiredzi to be precise.
Mapombi heard the old man descended at Tongaat Hulett to try and solve the land dispute but nothing, I mean nothing materialized. Minda vari kutora vachigovana pachiZanu Zanu isu vana Mapombi tichidya nhoko dzezvironda. Zanu PF is the only party with people who fought for this country so regai vawondonge nyika vega iyi. Let them destroy the economy, shut down industries and let them take even all the sugarcane farms belonging to Hippo Valley and Triangle Estates. Regai vatore zvese!
Kkkkkk but this time around Zanu PF iri pama1 – Civil Servants need their salaries and the coffers are dry. Government gives thumbs up to Koala Park Abattoir

Increase Gumbo

CHIREDZI – Government has hailed the state of the art Koala Park Abattoir as an example of excellent entrepreneurship and a good ZimAsset vehicle which stands as model for rural development.
This was said by deputy minister Paddy Zhanda of Agriculture (Livestock) in a speech read on his behalf by Acting Principal Director of Veterinary Services, Doctor Josphat Nyika while addressing delegates during the official opening of the facility last Tuesday.
Zhanda said the establishment of Koala Park Abattoir represents progress in the developmental goals set by government through ZimAsset.
“Projects of this nature complement government’s development efforts in a number of ways and are a good ZimAsset vehicle needed to stimulate rural development by creating jobs for the surrounding communities,” said Zhanda.
He said the facility was strategically located as it will aid the control of cattle diseases such as foot and mouth in Chiredzi and surrounding areas by reducing the movement of cattle to faraway abattoirs.
Zhanda hailed the Koala Park director, William Swan for coming up with an impressive set-up which separates the abattoir and the feed lot.
“I am impressed with the setup here, the separation of the feedlot and the abattoir is highly remarkable because it controls the spread of diseases,” said Zhanda.
He said the abattoir stands to benefit from the growth of the local beef market and tap into the international market due to the high mechanisation work processes which aid efficiency.
Koala Park Abattoir is well-known for supplying high quality beef both nationally and internationally and the abattoir slaughters more than 50 000 beasts every year.
The abattoir procures cattle from surrounding communities in Chiredzi that are fattened at the feedlot before slaughtering.news

Peter Lobel donates Fire tender to Council

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO – After Masvingo city fire department was praised for putting down a potentially disastrous blaze at Zimpost building a fortnight ago, Peter Lobel has come forward and donated a 5 000-litre fire engine and rescue equipment through his Mudzimi Wemoto project.
The fire engine comes as a replacement to the one which was damaged in an accident in November 2015 when it crushed on its way to Masvingo airport where a French aeroplane had made an emergency landing.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Saturday last week Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze said he was proud of the fruit-bearing relationship that the city has with Lobel.
“Mr Lobel is our all-weather friend who has stood by us in all times. Through his Mudzimi Wemoto project, the city has benefitted a lot. In 2014 we received our first donation of two fire engines.
“Unfortunately in 2015, one of the donated fire engines was involved in an accident while on duty. We told Mr Lobel of the incident and today he has come to make a replacement with a much bigger engine.
“We appreciate all the support he has given to us. Our fire department will now be efficient and ready to respond whenever there is a fire or rescue mission,” said Fidze.
Lobel said he will always be there to offer help to Masvingo as well as other cities in as far as the provision of fire and rescue equipment is concerned.
“We are here to save lives and property. I have made donations in Kariba, Gokwe and Marondera. More donors are chipping in the project and we call on all well-wishers to chip in the Mudzimi Wemoto project,” said Lobel.
The city’s fire department has successfully carried rescue missions in road accidents along the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway and they recently rushed to an accident in Gutu involving an Inter Africa bus where they arrived in time to rescue trapped victims from the wreckage.
Earlier this year they put out a fire that engulfed a Mukaro High School dormitory.news
