The dead body of a 55-year-old man was found by Masvingo police in a drainage ditch at 281km peg along Harare – Masvingo road on April 22, 2024.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and said police suspected that the deceased was hit by a vehicle because there were broken glass fragments at the scene.
He urged motorists to avoid speeding and in case of an accident, they should take victims to the nearest hospitals, not to disappear.
“We have a case where the body of a male adult was discovered in a ditch along Masvingo Harare road and Police suspect that it was a hit-and-run accident because there were broken glass fragments at the scene.
“We urge motorists to stop and render help to victims and they should take the victims to the nearest health facility for treatment before they lose their lives, they should avoid running away if they hit victims, and should follow road instructions,” said Dhewa.
He said the deceased’s next of kin was yet to be identified and called for anyone with information that could help the police with investigations to contact the police.
“We urge members of the public are information on the deceased to contact any nearest police station, the police have yet to identify the deceased’s relative.
“There is no other information that the police received that helps to identify the deceased relatives or information that had to do with the deceased’s death,” said Dhewa.
Dhewa urged pedestrians to exercise caution when walking on tarred roads especially during dark hours to avoid being hit by vehicles.
“Sometimes people get drunk and walk in tarred roads during late hours and at times they are hit by vehicles, we urge them to exercise caution especially on tarred roads or during peak hours,” said Dhewa.
Circumstances are that on April 22, 2024, at around 0630 hours a Masimba Construction security guard saw a body in a drainage ditch lying lifeless, the guard alerted Masvingo Central Police who attended the scene.
The deceased body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
