Popular Masvingo actor David ‘Vharazipi’Mubaiwa has commended the role of sport in occupying young people’s minds which in turn becomes a solution to Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Addressing scores of villagers at Zvamahande School commemorating World Press Freedom Day organized by TellZim News supported by Zim Media 27, FOJO Media Institute, International Media Institute (IMS) and Sverige (Sweden) on May 8, Mubaiwa said sport gatherings act as a therapy to idle minds and hence curb GBV cases in the home.

“Today we are here gathering for these games. I am sure it is a noble thing to have youthful men and women engaging in sporting activities and that will help restrain hem from engaging in domestic violence as would be the case if they spend more time confined to their homesteads.

“We as a community really appreciate the role of sport and thus express gratitude to the organizers of this sporting tournament and wish it will not be the first and last of its kind, but look forward to continuity so that communities remain united through social activities like these. Right now as I speak, if we have not gathered here, we would have recorded cases of domestic violence in the home,” said Mubaiwa.

Guest of honour at the event Masvingo West legislator also Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira also praised the role of sport towards unifying communities as well as promoting physical fitness to the participants.

“We want give thanks to the organizers of this gathering by recognizing our rural communities for such an important commemoration, it shows that they also appreciate that talent is abundant in our communities and that is why they are here today. Sport is important in the lives of people in terms of ensuring physical fitness and maintenance of strong immune systems.

“This day will therefore go a long way in uplifting everyone here towards a good cause. Also talent identification is another gain to be accrued from a gathering like this and thus the role of information dissemination by the media is critical,” said Chadzamira.

He also praised the role of the media towards uplifting marginalized communities.

“I would like to applaud media personnel for spearheading development through positive coverage they give when it comes to developmental issues. If they preach good news about their country, good things also come towards their country. Today these media professionals gave you a provincial status as Zvamahande as there are other districts there around this province but you were chosen.

“Look at one of your own Vharazipi, he was given the chance to shine through marketing by various media outlets and today he is a shining star,” he added.

The commemorations were graced by journalists from various media outlets among them TellZim News, The Herald, national broadcaster Ztv, Hevoi FM, The Midweek Watch, The Mirror and Great Zimbabwe University Campus Radio.
