25 MArch 2017, A third year student at Bulawayo Poly Technical College, 23-year-old Makaka is on industrial attachment at Phill Air in Masvingo.
She says an air conditioner is a device which removes heat from the air inside a building or vehicle thereby lowering the air temperature. The cooling is typically achieved through a refrigeration cycle, but sometimes evaporation or free cooling is used.
Refrigeration is a process of moving heat from one location to another in controlled conditions. The work of heat transport is traditionally driven by mechanical work, but can also be driven by heat, magnetism, electricity, laser, or other means.
Refrigeration has had a large impact on industry, lifestyle and agriculture but with very few women visible in her trade, Makaka urges young ladies to take up refrigeration and air conditioning courses as they offer hands on skills that are applicable in today’s world.
Modern vehicles that carry perishables are refrigerated and, at the same time, they are fitted with air conditioning equipment.
With the changing weather patterns, there is more demand for air conditioning equipment in both new and old buildings, thereby creating more opportunities for the technician in manufacturing, sales and after sales.
Makaka says technical jobs are usually productive jobs and more women therefore should go for technical jobs so that they are able to play a key role in the development of both themselves and their country.business
