A tragic incident occurred on January 24 at around 1830 hours when a gas explosion claimed life of Lawrence Chindanya (14) from Rujeko C, Masvingo, injuring two other people.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident to TellZim News and urged members of the public to be careful while using gas stoves.
“I can confirm the incident of gas explosion in Masvingo where the now deceased was burnt to death and her aunt Rutendo Chindanya (29) and their neighbour Viola Kurauone sustained serious wounds leading them to be admitted in hospital. I urge members of the public to be careful when using gas stoves,” said Dhewa.
On January 24 at around 1830 hours Lawrence and her aunt Rutendo were cooking with a gas stove inside the house. At that moment Rutendo added onion to the boiling cooking oil, which caused sparks and ignited the fire. The two started to cry for help which prompted Ernest Kurauone (42) and his wife Viola to rush to their rescue who were already injured. Viola was also injured in turn. Neighbours from the area came to the aid of the three victims.
The victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. On the same day at around 2000 hours Viola was transferred to Makurira Memorial Hospital due to her condition while Lawrence and her aunt were taken to the Intensive Unity Care Unit at United Bulawayo Hospital due to their critical conditions. Upon arrival at the hospital, Lawrence was pronounced dead and his body was taken to the mortuary.
The property which was destroyed worthy US$900 which include four plate stove, fridge, bed, wardrobe, clothes and other things.
