The National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (Nango) southern
region on recently held their regional elections that ushered in a new
leadership.
Nango executive director, Leonard Mandishora presided over the elections
which saw Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (Zuj) first vice president, Godfrey Mtimba
being elected regional chairperson after four out of eight votes were cast in
his favour.
Mtimba took over from Zendakwaye Zendakwaye who served his two terms and
could not run for another term as per the dictates of the Nango constitution.
Lucia Masekesa was elected secretary, Joice Mhungu took the vice
chairpersonship while Samuel Mhungu, who lost in the chairperson’s election,
was elected treasurer.
In his acceptance speech, Mtimba said he was humbled by the confidence that
members had shown in his leadership.
“I am deeply humbled by this. As the newly-elected chairperson, I will
work hard to make sure that our civic group is recognised further afield and I
will work hard to satisfy the demands of this great responsibility that has
been entrusted on me,” said Mtimba.
He later told TellZim News in an interview he will work in consultation
with his predecessor and the outgoing leadership to make the organisation
greater and more capable of serving the people.
“I cannot make it alone so I will engage my predecessor and everyone
who was in the previous leadership because I believe we have one cause which is
to make the organisation great and also serve the people in the best way
possible,” Mtimba said.
The new board will run for the next three years under the leadership of the
chairperson who will also represent the region in the Nango national executive
board.
