CHIPINGE – The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society recently commissioned Dakate Bridge which was constructed in partnership with government and local authorities.
The bridge, situated in Chibuwe communal lands of Chipinge West, has brought relief to local traders especially livestock buyers.
Built to the tune of US$69 000, the 100-metre-long bridge was officially opened by the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Monica Mutsvangwa on May 12 this year.
Livestock, hardware and clothing traders told iTellNews they were grateful to the partnership between government and Red Cross which enabled the construction of the bridge.
Gideon Chiororo, who hails from Chibuwe but owns some butcheries and an entertainment joint at Checheche growth point said the bridge was helping to lower costs of doing business.
“The bridge is lowering my travel costs and has reduced the time I used to spend when buying livestock here.
“The area is now accessible even in bad weather, something that we had never imagined before. It is indeed a relief to me and most business people,” said Chiororo.
Cecilia Nkomo, who owns a fast food outlet in Chipinge town, is another businessperson who frequents Chibuwe area.
“Dakate Bridge made my business easy as a female businessperson. We used to be cut off when the river got flooded. But it’s now all history,” said Nkomo.
Councilor for Chipinge rural Ward 20, Charles Mugidho said he was happy that there was a notable increase in traffic using the route.
The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society constructed Dakate Bridge in partnership with Chipinge Rural District Council (RDC), District Development Fund (DDF), Department of Public Works, Ministry of Roads and the Ministry of Defence.
The relief organisation’s president; Edson Mlambo, secretary general; Maxwell Phiri and ambassador; Alick Macheso graced the official opening of the bridge.local
