ZVISHAVANE – Zvishavane Town Council secretary, Tinoda Mukutu has apologised for the town’s intermittent water problems, saying a breakdown of two raw-water pumps at Ngezi water works had disturbed efforts to ensure a flawless water supply.
Two of the four raw water pumps at Ngezi water works, Mukutu said, had recently stopped working.
“It is true that we are having a challenge with our water pumping system due to sudden failure of two of our raw water pumps at Ngezi water works,” Mukutu said.
He indicated that the pumping system could have been overwhelmed by excessive mud due to flooding conditions in the river.
Mukutu also said the water that is pumped to the town is sometimes not clear due to red soils on the catchment area.
“We are quite aware of the problem and we are trying to use a variety of chemicals such as Ammonium Sulphate, HTH and Chlorine Gas to clean the water and make it clearer,” Mukutu said.
He also indicated that the town council was working very hard to improve the quality of water supplies, saying large amounts of chemicals are used daily for purification.
The heavy rains pounding most southern parts of the country have flooded rivers, and in many cases have flooded pump stations while clogging suckers at intake points with mud.
This led to recent water shortages in places like Mberengwa, Ngomahuru, Mashava and Chivi growth point.local
