25 Jan 2017 – CHIREDZI – The Australian government has donated funds to refurbish WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) infrastructure in Chiredzi, as council was failing to stop raw sewerage flowing in the streets and providing all residents with enough tap water.
Other areas like Zava and Magwaza are not receiving tap water and only rely on boreholes.
The funds were donated late last year and are meant to repair and construct all WASH infrastructure.
Problems of raw sewerage flowing onto the open have been widely covered by the media but council has shown no capacity to fix the problems.
Australia is working with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) to fight sanitation problems in the country.
A contractor has already been given work and will be paid on the basis of confirmed work done.
Acting Town Secretary, Wesley Kauma told residents gathered at Chitsanga Hall that they were fortunate to be the recipients of the funding as their own town could not do it on its own.
He said their main priority was Magwaza and Zava areas where tapped water is not available.
“We received a donation from the Australian government which later chose Unicef as its implementing partner. The donation is for the refurbishment of sewer systems and making sure water reachs everywhere. Our priority is Zava and Magwaza,” said Kauma.news
