Masvingo City promises to continue re-graveling roads

By Beverly Bizeki

Masvingo City Council promised to continue leveling the large heaps of gravel placed on some roads around the city for road graveling a few weeks ago and assured residents of significant progress in two weeks.
Speaking to TellZim News, Masvingo City Mayor and Ward Four Councilor Alec Tabe said the project was in progress as the city had acquired graders from Masvingo Rural District Council (RDC) for use in the project.
“We have embarked on a road rehabilitation programme to resuscitate some of our road networks. Most of our graders were down that’s why progress slowed down but we engaged Masvingo RDC for assistance and these are now in place and the gravelling commenced on May 28, 2024.
‘We are hoping that in the next two weeks we will have covered the bulk of the areas we are targeting,” said Tabe.
Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA) Spokesperson Godfrey Mutimba said the heaps of gravel had negative effects on residents and implored council to speed up the project for swift traffic movement in areas where the project is being undertaken.
“That is a sign of dereliction of duty and negligence on the part of council, they are not serious nor concerned about the effects of those heaps of gravel on motorists and pedestrians. In some cases they cause accidents and we demand that they move fast in regravelling the roads so that traffic moves swiftly. After all, they must complete projects whenever they commence, we need seriousness from them,’ said Mutimba.
The first nine roads that will be re-graveled are Zviitirei, Manhede Street, Mushuku Street, KMP Main Road, Samson Mundondo, Mbudzi Main Road, 4.1 Barrack Roads, S. Makuyana and J Chauke roads.
Council has since placed heaps of gravel on some roads for graveling and residents have been complaining over disturbances in traffic movement.

Escalate climate change issues, media told

By Decide Nhendo

Media houses have been urged to cover climate change issues in their reportage to create awareness and ensure citizens get information on keeping the environment safe.
Addressing journalists during the belated World Press Freedom Day commemorations at Longdale small scale irrigation scheme in Masvingo West ward 10, on May 24, Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) Commissioner Aleck Ncube said though media organizations were covering climate change issues, there was need to step up to make sure citizens were aware of ongoing environmental crisis.
“Media houses are addressing climate change issues, but I believe they must put more effort to make sure that everyone is aware and plays a part in keeping their environment. It is up to media houses and journalists to disseminate information on climate change issues exhaustively to citizens,” said Ncube.
Ncube said there was need to address gaps in newsroom for climate issues to get the attention they deserve since it has a negative impact on people’s lives.
“Climate changes is an information intensive subject. Well informed journalists are best positioned to report climate change which is becoming the biggest threat to humanity,” said Ncube.
Ncube also said it was important to educate people in their local languages to make sure they receive and understand information concerning climate change since it’s a crisis affecting the whole world.
“It is important for media houses to educate people using local language as citizens will be able to easily get what the media will be communicating to them,” said Ncube.
Longdale small scale irrigation scheme chairperson Davison Makangavaya said they were getting climate change information from the local media and urged journalists to keep relaying information on the topic as it helped them in making informed decisions.
“We applaud the media for the work they are doing because we are getting climate change information from them. They must keep on addressing these issues because it helps us make informed decisions as farmers because we are affected by environmental crisis directly,” said Makangavaya.
Climate change is a global crisis and has caused an El Nino induced drought this year in most parts of Southern Africa, Zimbabwe included. Farmers have had a poor harvest from the 2023-2024 farming season.
The 2024 World Press Freedom Day commemorated on May 3 was running under the theme: A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) hosted the belated WPFD commemorations across the country.

Parents urged to support children in junior soccer league

Masvingo Junior Social League (MJSL) has implored parents to support children who are into sport especially football so that they become competitive. The league chairperson Richard Munyenye applauded parents who were allowing their children a chance to spend time at grounds and urged them to do more through providing sport wear, refreshments among other things.
“I applaud parents who are letting their children go to the soccer grounds to spend time there. I implore them to do more and support their children with requirements like sportswear, refreshments and any other sporting equipment,” said Munyenye.
He said having children in sport protected them from societal ills like drug abuse and said MJSL committee made sure to include education on topics like sexual reproductive rights at the soccer grounds.
“The time these children spend in the soccer field holds them back from dangers like drug abuse and other things because we educate them on various topics like sexual reproductive rights and to take their responsibilities at home during training,” said Munyenye.
He further urged the community and the corporate world to sponsor MJSL saying youngsters could choose sport career paths from the junior level so there was need for assistance in whatever way possible for the junior league to prosper.
Blessing Academy head coach Blessing Nyambuya popularly known as coach Mabule said parents should identify talent and not to undermine potential of the league and their children.
“We call for parents to support their children, not to undermine league’s potential as well as their children’s because they can make a living out of sport,” said Nyambuya.
MSJL is currently on break with games scheduled to start early June. Blessing Academy is leading with 19 points from nine played matches with six wins, one draw and two loses.
On second position are ties between Strickers FC and Fair Deal both with 17 points
K.C Academy are second from last with 13 points and carrying the log is Blue Diamonds with only three points.

Teacher from hell; molests 5 grade four pupils

…touches privates, makes dirty comments
…SDC parades victims to narrate horror in front of parents

By Brighton Chiseva

BIKITA – A 57-year-old teacher from a Bikita school was arrested for allegedly molesting five of his grade four learners on separate incidents, also making some comments of how they were sexually gifted.
The teacher who cannot be named for ethical reasons is alleged to have indecently assaulted his victims who are all between nine and eleven years old, between May 1 and May 23 2024.
A disturbing video of the innocent learners is trending on social media after the parents through the School Development Committee (SDC) and the local traditional leaders convened a meeting where they stopped school operations and brought everyone out forcing the leaners to narrate their ordeal in front of other learners, teaches, parents and police constabulary officers.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the teacher was arrested and would appear in court on charges of indecent assault.
“I can confirm we have a report of a teacher who was nabbed by the police for indecent assault after he was reported for molesting five leaners aged between 9 and 11,” said Dhewa.
He promised that the police will look into the matter of the trending video to establish its source, advising the school authorities, community to report such cases to the police and let them handle matters.
Bikita District Education Inspector (DSI) James Mahofa also confirmed the incident and said they had since dispatched a team to the school to establish what really happened.
He then referred the reporter to the Provincial Education Director (PED) Shylatte Mhike who also said she was yet to get a full report from the district.
“A team from different departments is currently on the ground to investigate the matter and we are yet to get a full report of the matter,” said Mhike.
Circumstances are that on May 23, one learner asked for permission to go to the toilet from the accused who then caressed the victim with his hand underneath the table before allowing her to go.
Around 1300hrs on the same day, he allegedly called another learner and asked her to escort him to his house and upon arrival he allegedly pushed her on the bed, caressed her before she got up and ran away and told her classmates.
One of victims gathered courage and reported to the deputy head who told the school head.
It is alleged that some learners later opened up with one saying she was forced to sit on his lap whilst he was naked.
However, the parents later got wind of the incident and convened a meeting where they paraded the learners to narrate their ordeal in front of them and local traditional leaders who later handed the accused to Bikita Police.
A number of people have raised concern over the way the parents handled the matter, forcing the learners to speak in public while someone was recording a video which was later leaked to social media.

Prioritizing Children’s Well-being, Easing the Stress of School Reopening after Holidays

By Alibeti Vushe

When schools prepare for opening after holidays, it is crucial to address the often overlooked issue of children’s stress during this transition. While the return to school may seem routine, it can trigger significant anxiety for young minds. The shift from relaxed holiday schedules to structured school routines, coupled with academic pressures and social expectations, can weigh heavily on children, impacting their mental well-being and ability to adapt effectively.
For children, holidays provide a much-needed break from the structured confines of school, allowing them to unwind, explore personal interests, and simply relax. However, the return to the classroom can be daunting as it signifies a shift from leisurely pursuits to academic demands, social pressures, and the reinstatement of daily routines. This sudden change can evoke a range of emotions in children, from mild apprehension to heightened worry or even moments of panic, as they grapple with readjustment and the uncertainties that lie ahead.
Recognizing and addressing children’s stress during this period of transition is crucial for their well-being. Parents and caregivers can take several steps to support young minds as they return to school. First and foremost, encouraging children to express their thoughts and emotions about going back to school establishes a crucial foundation for understanding and support. It is essential to create an environment where they feel genuinely safe and heard, both physically and emotionally. Children need to know that they won’t face ridicule or dismissal for sharing their worries. However, non-judgmental and patient listeners is key. Sometimes, what might seem trivial to adults can be a big deal for kids, and it’s crucial to acknowledge that. Additionally, validating their emotions is essential. Even if we don’t fully understand why a child is feeling a certain way, it is vital to acknowledge and accept their feelings as valid. Normalizing their emotions helps them feel understood and supported.
Providing reassurance is another crucial element as children often look to adults for guidance and support, especially when facing new or challenging situations. Offering reassurance lets them know that they are not alone and that you believe in their ability to navigate whatever comes their way. Reassurance can come in the form of practical advice, comforting words, or simply being there to listen and provide a comforting presence. Fostering open communication requires consistency and ongoing effort. It’s not just a one-time conversation but an ongoing dialogue. Regularly checking in with children, asking how they’re feeling, and addressing any new concerns that arise helps maintain trust and strengthens the bond between adults and children. Ultimately, open communication is the cornerstone of building strong, supportive relationships with children. Therefore, by creating a safe space for them to express themselves, listening attentively, validating their emotions, and offering reassurance and support, we empower children to navigate the challenges of returning to school with confidence and resilience.
Establishing routines is another essential step in helping children transition smoothly back into the school environment after holidays. By gradually adjusting key aspects of their daily schedule, such as sleep patterns, meal times, and study habits, parents and caregivers can provide children with a sense of stability and control during this period of change. One of the most crucial aspects of this process is gradually adjusting sleep schedules. During the holidays, children often stay up late and wake up later than they would during the school year. As the start of school approaches, it’s essential to gradually shift bedtime and wake-up times earlier, allowing children to readjust to their school schedule without feeling overwhelmed. Starting this adjustment process several days or even a week before school reopens can help mitigate the shock of suddenly having to wake up early again. Similarly, adjusting meal times can help children ease back into their school routines. Holidays often involve irregular eating patterns, with more snacks and indulgent meals than usual. Transitioning back to regular meal times, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, can help establish a sense of normalcy and consistency for children as they prepare to return to school.
Additionally, it’s essential to reintroduce structured study habits and routines in the days leading up to school reopening. This might include setting aside dedicated time for homework or academic review, organizing school supplies, and creating a designated study space. Therefore, by gradually reintroducing these routines, children can mentally prepare themselves for the academic demands of the school year while feeling supported and prepared. Establishing predictable routines provides children with a sense of stability and control, which can be particularly comforting during times of transition. Knowing what to expect and having a clear structure in place can help reduce anxiety and uncertainty, allowing children to focus on adapting to the changes ahead.
Modeling positive coping strategies and resilience-building techniques is crucial for children’s development. Adults can demonstrate healthy stress management through practices like mindfulness and exercise, teaching children that seeking help is normal and a sign of strength. Through openly sharing personal experiences and encouraging support-seeking behavior, adults foster a supportive environment where children feel empowered to navigate challenges confidently. This approach equips children with valuable skills and encourages resilience in facing life’s ups and downs.
By proactively addressing children’s stress during school reopening, we create a supportive environment conducive to their emotional well-being and academic success. Prioritizing their mental health empowers them to confront the challenges of the new school year with confidence and resilience. As caregivers and educators, we bear a collective responsibility to cultivate environments where children can flourish. Safeguarding the well-being of our youth is paramount, underscoring the imperative to nurture their holistic development and ensure they thrive in both their educational journey and beyond.

Girl goes missing at night, found dead in Manyanga dam

Zvishavane – Police in Midlands province are investigating a case of drowning which occurred on May 16 2024 in Mataga Zvishavane, where the body of a 13-year-old girl was discovered floating in Manyanga dam.

He did not see anything, so he returned to bed. The following morning Shoko saw the door to the hut in which the victim slept wide open and with her missing.

Mucheke rank refurbishment remains pipedream

By Decide Nhendo

Despite continuous promises to act, Masvingo City Council is yet to upgrade Mucheke Rank which has been abandoned by long distance transport operators who now use undesignated points in the Central Business District, with prospects of going back remaining a pipe dream.
Masvingo City Mayor Cllr Alec Tabe has however said council was going to upgrade the terminus to the best standards.
He said the terminus was going to be transformed into a state of art rank to benefit local businesses and vendors around the terminus to have more customers as travelers will buy from them.
“Masvingo City Council is determined to upgrade Mucheke bus terminus into a state of the art rank. We want it to be of standard level.
“The terminus was benefiting people when it used to run properly, so we want to revive and upgrade it so that those who stay in Mucheke and other local business benefit,” said Tabe.
He said prospective companies and organizations were welcome to partner with council to refurbish the rank, urging big businesses to consider having branches near the terminus to attract people since travelers shun the rank because there is a scarcity of variety of services they can easily get in town.
“To make Mucheke bus terminus function again we no longer want to force people, but we want to establish structures like supermarkets at the place so that they will be no need for people to go to town, but get services they want there and get in their buses and go.
“So all those willing to partner us in the upgrade of Mucheke bus terminus including private players must come in with their help so that we can make it function again,” said Tabe.
In 2022 Mucheke Bus Terminus was cited in the city council budget consultation report under investment promotion, where council was looking for business partnership opportunities.
The bus terminus was a potential revenue cashcow for the cash strapped city council, as it has been lying idle for years without any meaningful efforts to refurbish.
Masvingo City Council then made a resolution in 2022 to make buses stop operating from the CBD and move to Mucheke Rank saying they had intentions to upgrade the bus terminus on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) concept they had reportedly copied from Gweru City Council, but the action was fruitless.
Council has also on a number of occasions passed resolutions aimed at driving out public operators from the CBD but failed.
The pick-up points in town cause disorder in the CBD as many of them do not have ablution facilities or running water, forcing travelers to use alleys and sanitary lanes to relieve themselves.
The pick-and-drop points also deny council access to the much-needed revenue they would potentially realize from rank charges in an organized setup.
The refurbishment of Mucheke bus terminus will also likely create employment for local residents and informal traders.

Youths urged to venture into sugarcane farming

By Decide Nhendo

For years sugarcane farming in Chiredzi and the Lowveld was mainly dominated by war veterans and other well-connected people especially those aligned to the ruling party but of late youths have penetrated the farming industry with some making it to compete with well-established farmers.
Some youths in Chiredzi have joined the industry and urged their peers not to wait until they get their land as they can do joint ventures with those who already have land and start farming while applying and waiting for their land.
Speaking to TellZim News, one such youth Taenzana Mupambiki said it was possible for youths to make it in the cash crop farming and urged other youths with passion to consider getting plots and start farming.
He said though it was not easy to get land, passionate youths can partner with other established farmers to raise more capital whilst facilitating processes for them to get their land.
“Youths do not need to wait to get their own land, they can start by doing joint ventures with those who own land and start production. There are some with land but do not have capital so they can join hands and start production while they wait to get their pieces of land.
“I was a truck driver in 2016, and it was difficult to get land at that time, so I partnered with other farmers in Mkwasine. In 2017 I applied for my own from the Ministry of Lands until I got one in 2021,” said Mupambiki.
He said that year he managed to prepare 10ha of virgin land which gave him 2000 tons of cane and invested back the money to clear 20 more hectares to make them 30 and is expecting 4500 tons.
“I have been applying for land at the Ministry of Lands offices in Masvingo for many years, and in 2021 I when I was given an offer letter for a 50-hectare farm in Hippo Valley. I went on to clear and plant sugar cane on 10 hectares producing around 2000 tons of cane.
“After harvesting, I cleared land and added cane on another 20 hectares, to make all land under cane 30 hectares, and from this land I am targeting around 4500 tons of cane,” said Mupambiki.
Mupambiki said several youths in Chiredzi were adopting agriculture as a business and for nation-building since it was creating employment and bettering people’s lives.
“Youths have here adopted the idea of agriculture and are making a difference. We can create jobs and employ several other youths who will be occupied every time meaning they will not be vulnerable to drugs,” said Mupambiki.
Another thriving youth Roy Tsvakwi who owns an 80-hectare farm said it was prudent for youths with small capital to start renting plots and do farming while they apply for their own.
“You don’t have to own land to be a farmer you can also start by renting or partnership whilst you apply for yours. That’s an advantage because when you get your own land you would have raised capital to develop,” said Tsvakwi.
Tsvakwi said he rented 30 hectares and when he got his land he had enough money to clear and start production on his own farm.
“I managed to bush clear my land using the funds that I got from a combined 30 hectares from two joint ventures,” said Tsvakwi.
