CCC fields candidates in all Chiredzi District wards, constituencies

…mammoth task ahead in Zanu PF strongholds

TellZim Reporter

CHIREDZI-The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has broken record in Chiredzi District having managed to field candidates in all 40 local authority seats and Five parliamentary seats.
Chiredzi district, which was trending on social media in 2018 after a record win in one of its constituencies, Chiredzi North, after surpassing Zanu PF’s long time stronghold, Uzumba Marambapfungwe, has been one of Zanu PFs cake due to its location in resettlement areas.
This makes it difficult for opposition parties to penetrate, even under worse economic situations, but this time around CCC has however managed to field candidates in every ward and in all constituencies
For the newly created Chiredzi Central Constituency, Zanu PFs candidate, Francis Moyo will be facing CCC’s youthful candidate, Ropafadzo Makumire, who is ward 3 sitting councilor and Chiredzi Town Council Vice Chairperson.
Makumire will be fishing from the same pond with his current boss, Alderman Gibson Hwende who is contesting as independent after was disqualified by the CCC’s election directorate to represent the party.
Makumire and Moyo are currently clashing over the development of the 750ha meant for urban expansion, with the latter is being alleged to be working is close ties with Full Life Open Arms Africa Investments (FLOAAI) which is currently at loggerheads with the two local authorities for selling undeveloped land without their knowledge.
Moyo faces a stiffer challenge in his own camp, Zanu PF, where he is being accused of nepotism and corruption which is going to lower his chances of succeeding in the forthcoming elections.
Gibson Hwende, who is the Chairman of Chiredzi Town Council also need to work extra hard towards cleansing his name from the 750 ha scandal as well as being named a Zanu PF proxy, which makes his chances of going to Mt Hampden slimmer.
Makumire commandeers a large youth base from his Church, Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe and has been actively involved in anti-drug abuse campaigns targeting youths in the constituency.
In Chiredzi north, where Roy Bhila returned as Zanu PF representative, a development that has never happened in the history of the constituency, has high chances of whitewashing CCC’s Fungai Chamisa.
In 2018 harmonized elections, the opposition did not field any candidate in Chiredzi North with little-known Joseph Chiturumani who represented NFP getting a paltry of 1 291 votes against Bhila’s 35 839 and Faith Machira of ZIPP getting only 635 votes.
With the constituency having been stripped of its major voting wards during the delimitation exercise, Fungai Chamisa is likely to score a sizeable number of votes than any opposition candidate before.
Darlington Chiwa who once stood as an Independent candidate in Chiredzi West before the delimitation exercise and scored 2 361 votes in a race with 8 other candidates, mostly independent, will also represent Zanu PF in the delimited Chiredzi West constituency, which comprise part of old Chiredzi North and West.
Chiwa needs disgruntled Shingirayi Mubhoyi, his primary election contender’s, camps on his side to beat CCC’ young turk Nhamoinesu Machigiri. The candidates have equal opportunities of winning the seat depending on the strategies they are going to use to lure their electorate, with Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe employees being the major decisive group in their battle.
In Chiredzi South, Zanu PF is the most dominant party, whose candidate and businessman Joey Sithole is set to clash with CCCs Douglas Gumbo in a more disgruntled constituency which is blaming the government for imposing Dendairy, a Kwekwe based company linked with the President Emerson Mnangagwa to displace more than 3000 families to grow lucerne grass on a 12000-hectare piece of land owned by the indigenes.
Also the renaming of Chambuta Children’s home to Auxilia Mnangagwa Children’s Home is another worrisome element which might play against Sithole though they seem to be also having a balanced opportunities to score better than each other.
Chiredzi East will be a more interesting battleground for Zanu PFs candidate Siyaki Mundungehama who is from the other end of the constituency representing the Ndau people against CCCs Godfrey Maluleke, a descendant of the Former Governor’s Titus Maluleke’s clan who will be standing in for the Xhangni tribe on the other end of the constituency.
With the former Member of Parliament for the old constituency, Denford Masiya off the book, the Xhangani end will be left without an option than electing one of their own, Godfrey Maluleke while the other side is hoping to get a Ministerial post for their candidate, Mundungehama who is also the Chairperson of the District Coordinating Committee (DCC)
Mundungehama has better odds than Maluleke and is likely to drop from being a civil servant as he joined other successful candidates in Mt Hampden.
In Chiredzi urban local authority elections, Zanu PF needs to be geared in order to win the majority seats, with some of its councilors being labelled corrupt on their alleged involvement in the 750 ha scandal will be very much difficult for them.
Interestingly, all the 7 councilors, excluding Makumire from both Zanu PF and CCC are the current seating councilors which makes it difficult for the contestants to unseat them, except for ward 2, which was merged by former ward 1 where Zanu PF had no chances of winning that seat.

46 Vendors loses wares in Chitima inferno

…causes of fire yet to be established

Perpetua Murungweni

46 vendors were left devastated after they lost their wares at the Chitima Market Inferno that destroyed goods in the evening of June 24.
Of the 46, 39 are women and 7 are men.
The cause of fire is yet to be established but victims suspect that the fire could have been caused by ambers in a charcoal heater that might have been left on within the premises.
A number of vendors use charcoal heaters in the market to warm themselves as well as sealing plastic packs of kapenta fish, maputi and soya chunks.
They also suspect that someone could have thrown a glowing stub of cigarette that might have resulted into the fire that destroyed goods worth thousands of dollars.
Some of the victims are appealing to well-wishers and authorities to help them with something to help them get back on their feet and resume business as they solely depend on it for their families’ survival.
“We are appealing to well-wishers who can help us in cash or kind so that we get back on our feet. As vendors most of us depend on the small profits that we make here and as it stands were left with nothing,”
“I lost three 90 kg bags of mopane worms, five 90 kg bags of dried vegetables soya chunks and some groceries that I was selling which cost around US $600,” said Jenifer Matorore.
Lydia Charambira said she lost 500 packs of snacks, 100 x10kgs of mealie meal and four 50kg bags of Soya Chunks.
“I lost close to US $1200 altogether because I had 500 packs of zappy snacks which cost US $1.30 each and 100 by 10kg mealie meal which cost US $5 each. I lost everything and now I cannot even afford bus fare for my child to school,” said Charambira.
Another victim Wanisai Pamire said the incident was a huge loss because she depended entirely on buying and selling goods, pays all her bills and feed her kids from the business.
“I lost a lot of staff that include bales of second hand clothes, stationery and some food stuff. I survive on vending and I have invested a lot of money on my goods and now that I have lost everything I don’t know how I am going to take care of my family,” said Pamire.
It is a sad situation for one Gibson Tivakudze who said he had recently graduated from push carts to vending in Chitima and lost everything only after three months into the trade.
“I used to make a living from push carts in town and I saved some money from that, managed to start a small business from it, and within three months of establishing here, I now have nothing,” said Tivakudze.
Masvingo City Mayor Collen Maboke, his deputy Wellington Mahwende, and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira visited the scene on Monday and Mahwende who is eyeing Masvingo Urban constituency in the August 23 elections under Zanu PF ticket promised to construct temporary stalls for the vendors.
Maboke is also eyeing the same seat as an independent candidate.

Beware of traffic accidents

Ladies and gentlemen, I used to think kuti if Mukomana becomes president we will be saved a lot of time calling him with these long names like the commander in chief what what, zvino I heard the citizens calling him Change Champion in Chief (CCC) kkkk, imagine how long it is before he becomes president, kuzoti avapo, hamenowo tichanzwirira, so the vice president will be the Vice Change Champion in Chief? Yack!!!!, that’s terrible, ndopaya pandinozoti CCC is just a Zanu Lite kkkk apa imi muchifunga kuti MDC is the Zanu Lite.
But I don’t know how we as a nation allowed Togarasei to do what he wants with us as a nation. Why was Mwonzora allowed to fool Zimbabweans claiming that his party has people when he has none? Anyone care to remember that he said during elections it will be him and Trabablas, hanzi, vanosvika pakuneta kudeedzera kuti Mwonzora vongoti Ra RaRaRa kkkk, mashura chaiwo. Now he failed to field candidates, only one MP in the province. So he is the president, Senator, Women’s quota, MP, Provincial Council, youth quota, councilor kkk. Fanana fanana naTyson. I heard hakunawo maCllr kana maMPs, it’s just iye and Mzembi, then of late Acie Luumba and Tsenengamu. If Mwonzora was Zanu so it means they failed to sponsor him to have some candidates? Kubva Zanu yacho haina moyo zvesure. If he is really a Zanu Proxy then I think this time he had a rude awakening, Zanu Chiwororo.
Its election time ladies and gentlemen, kune Mhepo yemaAccidents. Lets beware of accidents ladies and gentlemen. As I speak, i come to you with a heavy heart, I am mourning the founder of Independent Candidates for ED. He went the same way Tongogara, Cris Ushewokunze, Zororo Duri, Moven Mahachi, Boarder Gezi, Boarder Gezi, Chindori Chininga, Manyika and many others did. Chete we can’t liken his death to these because he was no longer a Zanu PF member since they declared that contesting as an independent warranted an automatic dismissal from the party. Again I am not saying anything, I am just saying he died in a car accident just like the above mentioned members nothing more, kana mukazoti hee maybe there is foul play zvava zvenyu, ini handipo. But it’s the season, lets beware kana tiri paMigwagwa.
I am saying so because I am lucky to be alive after an unknown fire who no one knows how it started just like how the accidents I mentioned above were not explained, engulfed Chitima market, which is my base. I am just lucky to be alive and I am beginning to suspect that maybe someone wanted to kill me. The challenge is I can’t pin point if the person is from the left or from the right because I have enemies and friends in both sides simply because I am a gentlemen handivanze. Vanondifarira they do because I speak the truth and my mind, those who hate me do so again for the same reason, saka maonaka nyaya yacho kuti ma1. Now my situation is worse, rotten banana and tomatoes are hard to come by now.
I am just happy to be alive but moyo wangu unorwadza for those who lost their goods in the inferno. I hope our police will do their job as usual and establish what happened. By their job I mean the prescribed one, the one they were recruited for not iri rechioko muhomwe ravari kunyanya kuita iri. But heads should roll in the engineering dept PaMasvingo City Council. I heard the fire fighters came nemota isina mvura, whats that? Wasting fuel with an empty tanker, kuita sei ikoko. Chete I am not sure because these days ndikangodya zvangu mabanana akaora ndonorara kuKennen Park uko so ndakazongoonawo smoke just like anyone else, I don’t know what really happened.
Ko ndonzwa kuti zvatosvorana Gonzo naChin’ai? I mean Zanu and Zec kkkk, ini hangu I don’t like anything that starts with a Z. ZRP, ZIMRA, ZINARA, should I continue? Of late I like Zesa, I can now see lights in town and that gives me hope. Imagine chando chemunaMucheke and the smell of sewer then woti rima, the combination is unbearable. However, I guess the power stability is not temporary. Right, I was talking about ZEC and Zanu PF. I hear Zanu through MR Bin, redu Chinamasasa, sorry Chinamasa is accusing ZEC of working in cahoots with CCC to allow those who were late on the nomination court to be on the final list kkk. Seka zvako Mapombi. Mukati haasi mashura imi? I now believe that Zanu PF is scared of the elections. They are busy doing all they can to disturb the elections. They are busy trying to block Tyson from contesting, now they are busy trying to block 15 CCC candidates from contesting again. They are panicking big time, rate riri kuvafemesa.
Before I go hangu kunotsvaka some rotten bananas murutsva igogu, can I take this time to tell the Minister of State and The mayor of Masvingo and the Town Clerk to do something here at Chitima, imagine if the situation continues like this and I die, who will tell people that this election Zanu PF will win more MPs than CCC? zvaPresident I will tell you when time comes but Just know its not Mwonzora, Linda, Tyson or anyone who want to get into Polad. Ndokuprera kwemashoko angu. The battle is between team sanction and team corruption kkkk. Hanzi when they are campaigning they don’t talk of sanctions but vangopinda ngoma ndiyi ndiyo. But on a serious note, nhai imi veZanu, all this you have failed to do because of sanctions and now promising to do after elections munozozviita sei, anenge abva here?
Speaking of sanctions, I hear the Chevrons angered the USA cricket team and we may be slapped with more sanctions kkk. Brace for more as we approach election time. We are proud of you boys, you have done well and wish you all the best. Ah I had forgotten to add Zifa on my list up there. I now like zvinhu zvinotanga naC. Chevrons, Citizens, should I add Chamisa? The only problem with this young man is people celebrated the birth of CCC, now he is allowing triple Candidates in one ward, haa ini zvangu ini.
Ko passenger 34 howfar, is the plane still in the air? When is he landing. Mukati ndege hain kuita accident imi. Lets pray ladies and gentlemen mwana asvike zvakanaka. Hanzi he should come and face the consequences of his earlier actions just like Tafadzwa Shamba and Thanks Makore. My heart bleeds on hearing these names. I wish all the best to Mr Makore on his quest to get in council. Mboko imboko.

Sweet news for CCC: Bad news for residents, Zanu PF

…As Rocky, Chirairo withdrew from race

Beverly Bizeki

MASVINGO – There is sweet news for Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Masvingo after the party successfully negotiated for withdrawal of two of its members who had contested, one as independent and the other allegedly forged signatures to create a double candidates in Masvingo West’s ward 2.
The two are Frank Chirairo, who withdrew last week, and Rocky Kamuzonda who had remained defiant but later gave in to the calls for his withdrawal
Kamuzonda confirmed the development to TellZim News and said he realized contesting as an independent will bring confusion in the party.
“It is true that I have withdrawn my candidature at Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). I have realized that I am still young and I still have more opportunities in the future,” said Kamuzonda.
He further said he also withdrew because of the respect he has for his party saying despite what happened he is still a CCC member and urged his supporters to rally behind Shantiel Chiwara.
“I am still 100 percent CCC and I urge all my supporters to vote for the CCC selected candidate,” said Kamuzonda.
Kamuzonda said his withdrawal was entirely his, sources within the party said it was Dzikamai Mavhaire who managed to convince him to step down.
“Rocky is Mavhaire faction and it’s actually him (Mavhaire) who convinced him to step down after he was given some money. The major reason why they both withdraw was that they want to stay in the party and make a comeback next election,” said the source.
Another source said the two were not sincere that they will support Shantiel saying they would rather make sure that Hwata wins because if they allow Shantiel to win, it will be difficult to remove her once she gets established.
“A similar incident happened in ward 1 in 2013, when Selina Maridza lost to Energy Bara, she promised to work with him but sabotaged him midway and the seat went to Zanu PF, that is how she made a comeback in 2018,” said the source.
A number of candidates were eyeing the seat, which was moved to Masvingo West from Masvingo Urban constituency after delimitation, on CCC ticket among them, Kamuzonda, who is ward 3 sitting councilor having been elected in last year’s by elections following recalls by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC Alliance party.
After the chaotic candidate selection process in CCC, Chirairo who was the residents’ favorite as evidenced by him winning the last stage of the selection process where he got 214 votes but failed to represent the party went on to file his candidature on CCC ticket as well.
Kamuzonda came second with 204 while the only female candidate in the race Shantiel got 27.
Shantiel is daughter to former Masvingo City Deputy Mayor James Chiwara who reigned between from 2013-2018 before losing the 2018 primaries to Tarusenga Vhembo.
The Chiwaras are from Gutu district and they hail from the same area with CCC party leader Nelson Chamisa.
Initially when Kamuzonda filed as independent his argument was that the party should respect the people’s decision and was supposed to pick either him or Chirairo
On the other hand the party had made a police report against Chirairo who was accused of forging signatures but the matter was later withdrawn after Chirairo withdrew his candidature. However, it is remains unclear whether Chirairo had forged the signatures or one of the signatories has signed for him.
A few days later Chirairo renounced his membership from the party and said he was quitting active politics.
Since the withdrawal of the two, fears of vote split in favor of Zanu PF were cleared and could be a bitter pill for Zanu PF whose fingers were as the party was the major beneficiary of the impasse.
Rocky and Chirairo were likely to divide the CCC vote and that could have worked to Zanu PF’s advantage as the party is trying all tricks to win more seats in Masvingo urban, having won only three out of 10 in 2018, a slip from the 2013-2018 term where they had 4.
A number of residents especially in two ward 2 WhatsAppp groups, who are both Rocky and Chirairo supporters are threatening ‘Bhora Musango’ saying they will vote for Hwata and not Shantiel since she was allegedly imposed on them.
They are accusing both Rocky and Chirairo of having been bribed by party big wigs to withdraw at the expense of their suppoters.
Four candidates will battle for the seat namely Hwata, Chiwara, Charity Shoko from of and Anderson Paradza who will be representing MDC T.

Chief, 3 Police officers bashed at funeral

…70 year old woman in dock for assaulting Chief

Brighton Chiseva

Controversial Chief Murinye real name Ephias Munodawafa was recently dressed down, humiliated and assaulted at a funeral in one of his villages.
He was assaulted together with three Zimbabwe Republic Police officers who had accompanied him to the funeral where he intended to stop the burial of one Jairos Zindoga at a ‘sacred’ place as per the areas’ tradition.
Masvingo Police referred all questions to the national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who in turn could not be reached as he was not answering his cell. Murinye However confirmed the incident and said the matter was already at the police.
“I was assaulted after together with the police officers I had asked to escort me to the funeral. The deceased’s father is one of my village heads. So initially he had told me about the funeral, he later told me that his deceased son’s in-laws had suggested that they will bury him at his homestead contrary to our tradition. So after failing to stop them he then asked me to intervene that’s why I called the police to escort me there.
However, when we tried to solve the matter, they refused and chased me and the police from the homestead attacking us and I sustain some injuries.
The police later came back with reinforcements and arrested some of the perpetrators but some escaped, “said Murinye.
He said in his area it was against tradition to bury someone at home as there were cemeteries in the area. He said they intended to bury the deceased is sacred place called (Chirambakutemwa) in shona where traditional rites are done.
He said the incident could have been worsened by his sour relations with the neibouring Chief Mugabe whom he clashes with over boundaries.
Sources who were present at the funeral said Murinye and there police officers Sergeant Honest Nemadziwa, constables Tariro Moyo and Great Marecha arrived at the funeral around 6 am. They summoned mourners and adviced those to stop the burial process and use the common cemetery.
This did not go well with some of the relatives who started attacking the chief and the police.
“The deceased’s brother Austin openly told the chief that they were not going to obey his orders and were going to proceed with burial. Another relative, Muzenda Muzenda told the mourners that the chief was undermining them and needed a beating.
They then attacked the chief and the police with open hands, fists and sticks.
The chief sustained injuries including a swollen eye. The police watched helplessly as they were also attacked and they went away only to return around 2 pm with reinforcement and they managed to arrest 34people,” said the source
Another source said of the 4 arrested people, 3 were males while one was a 70 year old woman who was seen slapping the chief on the face in a video that is circulating on social media.

CCC’s Chirairo quits politics, renounce membership

Beverly Bizeki

MASVINGO – Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member Frank Chirairo who was aspiring candidate for Masvingo West’s ward 2 has renounced his party membership saying he is quitting active politics.
His decision came a few days after withdrawing his candidature following a double candidate deadlock where he and another candidate, Shantiel Chiwara, successfully filed their nominations but the party declared Chiwara as the preferred candidate alleging that Chirairo had forged signatures.
He first made the announcement in Ward 2 WhatsApp platform and went on to confirm to TellZim News on June 24, 2023.
“Greetings citizens, Zimbabwe and ward 2 Masvingo West Constituency, we had a fantastic time, It was a good journey that we walked together where I interacted with citizens across all sectors of our community.
“I have decided to quit active politics and am hereby renouncing my membership in the party. I am no longer a CCC. Yours truly Frank Chirairo,” said Chirairo.
Initially Chirairo had been reported to the police on fraud charges with the party alleging that he forged signatures on his nomination forms and the party signatory denied having signed for him.
After some negotiations with other party structures, he went on to withdraw his nomination and the party withdrew fraud charges against him.
“I can confirm that on June 21 I filed for my nomination papers that had been brought to me by party officials and I then discovered that ward 2 Masvingo west constituency had also another candidate who had filed nomination papers. Investigations were made within the party and party officials communicated with other members and resolved and ensured that the party has only one candidate that will remain on the ballot paper on the election easy,” said Chirairo.
Jefferyson Chitando one of the party signatories confirmed reporting the fraud case to police as well as withdrawing charges.
The development was received with mixed feelings by people especially those in ward with some saying he made the right move as the party had failed to appreciate his contributions especially registering first time voters while some said he was supposed to continue as a party member and support the party to win the 2023 election
After his withdrawal the ward still faced vote split after Ward 3 Councillor Rocky Kamuzonda who was moved to ward 2 after delimitation also went on to stand as independent candidate but he later withdrew,
Recently, a statement released by CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere gave fraudulent candidates a 24 hour ultimatum to withdraw their papers or be dragged to court.
Cases of signature forgery in CCC were rife during the nomination court day and, a Kariba man, Andrew Mutsau who is alleged to have forged signatures in a double candidature case is facing was also reported to the police it was realized the signatures were wrongfully attached on his nomination forms.
CCC is threatening to deal harshly with double candidature fraudsters claiming double candidate cases were meant to give an impression of confusion in the party.

Youths the biggest victims of disinformation ahead of Zim 2023 elections

By Beverly Bizeki

MASVINGO – The conviction and subsequent sentencing of Advocate Fadzayi Mahere the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party national spokesperson on April 05, 2023 for communicating falsehoods was received with mixed feelings, with magistrate Taurai Manuwere ending up being the biggest victim as he received serious backlash largely from human rights defenders and opposition supporters.

Mahere was sentenced for publishing or communicating a false statement with the intention of inciting or promoting public disorder or public violence or endangering public safety as defined in Section 31(a)(i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. This was after she falsely published on her twitter handle alleging that a police officer had hit and killed a newly born baby who was strapped on the back of her mother.

Interestingly, the human rights defenders and opposition supporters condoned Mahere’s conduct and rather blamed the judiciary for being captured by the ruling party Zanu PF yet the truth was the constitutional lawyer had indeed had spread fake news that undermined the public confidence in a law enforcement agency, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

However, polarisation made human rights defenders and opposition supporters ignore the glaring impact of disinformation that Mahere disseminated on social media, notwithstanding the fact that the judiciary system in Zimbabwe might be captured as well.

Though Mahere herself pleaded guilty to communicating falsehoods, her supporters dismissed the charges and sentencing as frivolous claiming that there is no such law in Zimbabwe that criminalises publishing or communicating a false statement with intention of inciting public disorder yet Section 31(a)(i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act exactly speaks to that.

Similarly, Zanu PF has established a fully-fledged online propaganda team named Varakashi which equally spreads falsehoods with impunity. As expected, Varakashi receive standing ovation and ululations from Zanu PF senior officials and supporters respectively, for deliberating misinforming the electorate ahead of 2023 general elections.

The deliberate spreading of disinformation has since increased in Zimbabwe as the nation prepares for the general elections set for August 23, 2023. Researches have shown that disinformation is negatively impacting the youths who are the most active age group online.

Fact checking experts in Zimbabwe revealed to TellZim News that youths and young women are the biggest victims of disinformation and misinformation in Zimbabwe and the situation is getting too bad ahead of 2023 general elections.

ZimFact executive director Chris Chinaka

ZimFact executive director Chris Chinaka said there has since been a national rise of disinformation and misinformation since the proclamation of elections date by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the youths, mostly active online, are vulnerable as they cannot distinguish between facts and opinions.

“Statistics show that the youths are the majority consumers of online news and are the most victims of disinformation. The situation has since reached another level as we have witnessed a national rise of disinformation in Zimbabwe since the proclamation of election date. Many people are sharing information without verifying because they want to be the first to break the news yet they will be spreading false information,” said Chinaka.

“Disinformation is rife in WhatsApp group chats of political parties where false information about political opponents is deliberately published and circulated in order to win votes. At the end of it all, the youths are the biggest victims and purveyors of disinformation, hence, I want to encourage all media organisations and journalists to carry out campaigns to combat disinformation ahead of the general elections,” Chinaka added.

Dr Last Alfandika in a research, commissioned by TellZim, on the impact disinformation in Zimbabwe, found out that disinformation is on the rise especially this election period when almost everyone is focused on the plebiscite.

Dr Last Alfandika

In an interview with TellZim, Dr Alfandika said the ever increasing WhatsApp group chats have become the major sources of disinformation, and that it is sad that people are using this fake information to make decisions.

“The on-going social media disinformation and misinformation has continued to undermine peace and the people’s rights of access to credible information with the majority of the people unable to make informed decisions due to lack of credible information especially as we draw near the 2023 harmonised elections. While traditional media is committed to stemming the disinformation crisis, few people have access to it thus relying on social media for information,” said Dr Alfandika.

Youths who spoke to TellZim News confided that they often forwarded messages especially on WhatsApp platform without verifying first to establish if the information is true or false. This, according to youths interviewed in Mutare, is because they lack the skills to fact check if the information is true of false.

“Disinformation is now rampant and we are afraid many youths are going to make their political choices from a misinformed position come August 23, 2023. We are both victims and purveyors of disinformation and this is largely because we do not have the skills to check if the information is true. We will also be competing to be the first to break the news,” they said.

Researches by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Zimbabwe) indicate that the spread of disinformation has also negatively impacted the integrity of the journalism profession thus impacting the credibility of the media industry broadly. Misa said, in its 2012 communique, that government should take an active role in combating disinformation by promoting access to credible information.

“Citizens should be equipped with knowledge of fact checking tools and how to use them to verify information before sharing it. Governments need to be more proactive in promoting access to information so as to counter the spread of false information which is usually caused by a dearth of information from the state. Government laws on disinformation should be couched in line with international standards and best practices to ensure that they do not result in self-censorship and infringement of the right to freedom of expression,” said MISA Zimbabwe.

Chinaka urged citizens especially the youths to play an active role in combating disinformation saying they should make it a point that they establish if the information is credible before they share on social media platforms.

“Don’t believe everything that you read and see on social media platforms. I want to encourage the youths and electorate to go to established media organisations’ platforms for verification because journalists have discipline and the skills to fact check information before they post.

“It is everyone’s obligation to spread only fact-checked information therefore, no one should spread information before establishing the truth,” said Chinaka.

Despite being a developing country, Zimbabwe has followed the global trend of embracing social media as key communication platforms. There has been an upswing in the use of social media in Zimbabwe since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter have dominated as the most preferred platforms.

Misa Zimbabwe in 2018 notes that WhatsApp is predominantly used and in 2017, 47% of the total data bundles purchased were for WhatsApp therefore, people should play an active role to combat disinformation on this platform and other social media platforms ahead of 2023 general elections.

The Downside of Organizational Politics

By Shadreck Zangairai

In every organisation there is a hierarchy, which, more often, is characterised by an uneven distribution of power. Some employees are more likely to pursue this power than others, which is considered political behaviour in the workplace. The term ‘organizational politics’, also known as workplace politics, refers to the agenda of each employee within a company and the activities they engage in to acquire, increase, and wield power and resources to gain a desired outcome. Organizational politics is imminent in most organizations. It affects all employees and they experience its impact throughout their careers, whether positive or negative. For some employees, it’s a means of engaging in office gossip, while for others, it’s an opportunity to climb the career ladder.
Many people perceive the word politics with disdain, and visions of shady behaviour that is manipulative, divisive, and exclusively self-serving. But is that so? This view seem to originate from society’s perception of the ‘politics’ of the politician. In just one of countless examples, Mencken noted that a good politician is quite as unthinkable as an honest burglar. Researchers corroborate society’s increasingly negative opinions by documenting politicians’ status as one of the least trusted occupations. Contrary, research in the organizational sciences largely has run parallel to other academic disciplines, opting for a less than flattering treatment of the construct. There are two ways of viewing organisational politics: either as a symptom of social influence processes that benefit the organisation, or a self-serving effect that goes against the organisational goals. Nevertheless, the concept of organisational politics is a key social influence process that can either be functional or dysfunctional to employees and organisations. This paper delves much into the down side of organisational politics, with a little bit analysis of the up side of the subject.

The impact of Organisational Politics

Organisational politics cannot be ignored, but you join it at your own peril or ignore it at your own peril again. However, despite all that, the thing is inevitable, it’s either you are caught in between or you participate. The bad part is that, unchecked organizational politics can destroy a company when left to spiral out of control. But, although it being portrayed negatively, organizational politics are not inherently bad. Instead, it’s important to be aware of the potentially destructive aspects of organizational politics in order to minimize their negative effect. However, as John Kotter wrote in the book, ‘Power and Influence’, ‘without political awareness and skill, we face the inevitable prospect of becoming immersed in bureaucratic infighting, parochial politics and destructive power struggles, which greatly retard organizational initiative, innovation, morale, and performance’. Organizational politics are a normal part of the workplace. However, it is important that organizations create an environment whereby politics don’t become destructive. This can be achieved through implementing key objectives that create standards within the organization. There are various characteristics of organizational politics, although not exhaustive, the following are some of the characteristics; Indirect and informal communication, Use of underground tactics to advance, Manipulation, Not offending the wrong people, Courting attention, Truth management, Concealment of vulnerability, Currying favors, Scapegoating, Passing the bulk, and Learning how to use others.

The Up Side of Organizational Politics

Politics exist in all organizations and it can either be a blessing or curse . Organizational politics do indeed matter. The aim of organizational politics is to sell ideas, influence others and to achieve objectives; they are informal and unofficial and can sometimes occur ‘behind closed doors. However, despite this negative perception of organizational politics, there is evidence that organizational politics are not necessarily evil but that, if used effectively, can aid in gaining compromises in difficult workplace situations. Since the main thrust of this write-up focuses mainly on the downside of organisational politics, I will go straight to the main theme of the discussion.

The Down Side of Organizational Politics

The dark side of organizational politics is that it can be a curse and negatively affect job performance. Because of hunger for power, most organisations are being run like a jungle where the stronger eat the weaker ones. As a result of the stiffening macro-political platform, the micro-political platform prevailing in offices is also making it very difficult for professionals to thrive in the business world. In order to remedy this overly political behaviour, company leaders can provide equal access to information, model collaborative behaviour, and demonstrate that political manoeuvring will not be rewarded or tolerated. Moreso, leaders should encourage managers throughout the organization to provide high levels of feedback to employees about their performance. High levels of feedback reduce the perception of organizational politics and improve employee morale and work performance. Remember that politics can be a healthy way to get things done.
Allowing dark politics to exist has long-term performance implications, particularly on the talent management front. It has a debilitating effect on competent employees who are driven by doing what is right for the organization. They become disengaged, they leave or they are pushed out. When employees see that their boss successfully climb the ladder through cunning, the message will be loud and clear: the perception will be that, success as a leader requires mastering dark politics. The more political the culture becomes, the more it reinforces that message and the more political people get. Such a political culture tends to attract “corporate politicians’’, thereby clearly creating a vicious circle. True to this notion, when managers play politics, they don’t have enough time for leadership. The bottom line is that it will spell trouble for the organization’s leadership pipeline and its ability to attract ethical talent. Looking forward to, say a decade or so to come, the company might be dead. This is a strategic issue that Human Resources (HR) management should be very concerned about. HR leaders should therefore lead by example. They should not play dark politics and allow corporate politicians to win the day in HR. There is need to raise awareness about the light and dark sides of politics, explain about the importance of the former and the implications of the latter, both immediate and future.
Again, politics within the company will not allow employees to be efficient in production. Most of them will be working at a low capacity. This will reduce production and is likely to lead to losses. Equally, the efforts of the hardworking employees will not be noticed. Furthermore, negative organizational politics also encourage laziness among some employees, thereby affecting the work of serious employees in the company. For instance, if 10 workers are serious with their work, whereas 20 workers are not serious with their work, the net effect will be poor work. Moreover, workers will divert their energies and resources to organizational politics. Thus, little energy will be left for production processes. Serious employees will be demoralized and will give up in their quest to productivity for the company. Likewise, it will be hard for the team leaders and managers to lead people with a negative attitude towards work. The end result is that, workers will not listen to their departmental heads. This will cause conflicts that affect the company.
The other negative effect of organization politics is the presence of demotivated employees. Motivation amongst employees ensures that there is increased productivity. Lack of motivation will underpin failure within the company. Sometimes, non-performers are favoured by managers because of their involvement in politics. This might not be taken well by other employees. Performers will not have any reason to work hard for the company. They will be demotivated and will not perform their tasks. For instance, employees involved in service delivery, they will perform poorly and are likely to discourage customers from using the services of the company. They will not provide services in a satisfactory manner. Customers are likely to boycott the products and services of the company leading to reduced revenue for the company.
Organizational politics could ruin the ambience. The world of business require people and organizations to have good relations to foster unity in production and service delivery. However, organizational politics interfere with good relations among employees of a company by creating an unfriendly work environment. Employees will not have peace in their workplace. Situations of negative work environment will enhance high turnover rates in the company.
Office politics take away trust that 0employees have in management. All decisions made by management even those that are rational, are all seen as influenced by a few crafty employees for their benefit. Trust among staff is critical in fostering team work and. When employees cannot trust each other, synergy cannot thrive and little output is registered. This is in support of John Kotter’s, assertion that when an organization is punctuated by an environment where employees do not trust each other, the pursuit to the successful achievement of the organization-wide vision and strategy is completely lost.
An environment where the weak ones are eaten by the stronger ones inhibits staff morale. It creates more fear in the weaker members of staff and thus takes away their energy to be expended on the job. The end result is talent flight. The most talented members of staff may not be the most crafty ones who have mastered the game called ‘office politics’. Office politics therefore, can make the most talented members of staff to either be eaten by the stronger ones by being ‘fired’ or make them resign. More often, greed and corruption will thrive in the organisation. Although it is nearly impossible to stop office politics or choose not to be affected by it, all that we can do is to constantly foster our respective professional ethics which have the potential to effectively address the dark side of office politics.

The Ethical Paradox of Organizational Politics

Before engaging in organizational politics, it is advisable to consider some ethical principles for guidance. Taking a leaf from SUN TZU’s view in the book titled, ‘The Art of War’, the following were given as advice to army troops, but in this case I equate it to an organization’s troops, who are the employees. It goes by saying, if it is not advantageous, do not act. One should ask, what benefit will be derived from/by engaging in the war/politics. If not in danger, do not battle, if it is not attainable, do not employ troops. Many a times, battles are lost by engaging troops to an unattainable battle. Many leaders fail this test as they force their employees to achieve goals that are beyond their reach. Victory is the general’s goal, so do not engage in military activity if there is no. Determine the ethical action to follow, ie, what is the value of the action? How does the value balance out any harm it will do to others and the organization? Does the action conform to standards of equity and justice?
In that same vein, it is ideal to consider the landscape one will be operating in. The great lesson in knowing this is that the landscape dictates the actions to be taken. Every activity takes place on a certain ground, and every ground suggests the response appropriate to it. One is therefore challenged to know the political landscape of his organization so as to be guided in all actions. In that same book, The Art of war, SUN TZU has this to say, in spread out ground do not encamp, in junction ground join with allies, in crossing ground do not linger, in enclosed ground strategize, and in death ground do battle’. Knowledge of the landscape include knowing the key players which lead you to successful alliances, knowing the rules which will help you to survive. This will assist to know who not to offend, which helps you in the actions to choose. So the landscape can be many things.
In a battle, it is recommended not to fight the enemy head on but rather shape the enemy ground. This narrows their course of action and leads them where you want. They have no alternative if the offer is made from the perspective of victory. They choose it as if it were their own idea. In the sense of organizational ground, it consists of the formal hierarchy, ie the reporting structure and who works for whom. In contrast to this, there is informal hierarchy which runs parallel to the formal one. This comprises of people with power and gatekeepers. Some of these know the office gossip while others may control the boss’ schedule.
